5 out of 5 stars SURPRISED WITH NUMBER OF PAGES.......2005-10-26

My brother-in-law has the exact same title book, his book has over 600 pages! I ordered the book thinking that I would get a similar copy at a great price. I did not realize that I was purchasing an condensed version. The information in the book, although somewhat sparse is good. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment.......2005-10-04

A few years back I signed up for a class in silversmithing which soon became addictive. In addition to that interest, I have always been interested in primitive art such as that of the American Indians, the cave drawings, Australian Aboriginal art or spiritual drawings. These forms of spirituality and art or of art are very powerful. I have chosen to concentrate my silversmithing designs toward the designs I see from these primitive peoples. The book, North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment has proven to be very helpful toward that aim. In addition to that, it's just plain good reading.

4 out of 5 stars One quibble/caution.......2004-05-24

This gorgeous book is indeed indispensable, especially if "read" visually. Unfortunately, quite a few of the tribal attributions for historic objects (information given to the author by museums) are wrong. Given the scope of this project, Dubin had little choice but to take often out-dated info at face value rather than do her own research. However, readers should keep this caveat in mind when using this work as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have!.......2004-05-16

This book is a must-have for anyone serious about studying Native American cultures. It is a fun read, while still being absolutely crammed with information. It's clear the author put in a lot of time and work to master her subject. Not to mention, the artwork featured in the book is beautiful. I love to breeze through it when I've had a hard day, just to feel my spirits lift looking at such amazing works of art. You will learn so much and enjoy the journey enormously.

5 out of 5 stars superb, magnificent.......2003-07-02

this book could easily inspire a life of crime--how else to afford the gorgeous contemporary jewelry? or acquire the museum quality antique and archeological collections?

as a knitter, embroiderer and beader, i am always looking for inspiration for my pieces. i may stoop to outright plagarism when it comes to the works in this incredible book. though i will say that i can only dream of having the level of skill the pieces display. the craftmanship, the artistry, are humbling when one considers the tools the artists had--and the reservation conditions under which too much of the art was created.

the text is wonderfully informative, if you can force yourself to read it, instead of allowing yourself to be mesmerized by the photos.

follow the advice of the professional review--buy this book immediately.

Book Description

The Ghysels collection of ethnic jewellers is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive. It is the culmination of passionate quest of over fourth years for aesthetic beauty and authenticity. As such, it represents an invaluable repository of research, taste and discernment. We enthusiastically pursue our journey through the twists and turns of the Ghysels' wealth of adornments. After having explored the universe of rings and earrings in two prior books in this series, we now have the pleasure of discovering the universe of bracelets. These mainly unpublished braceletes--about 1200 of them--have been chosen piece by piece with great love and exquisite taste. They form a group of exceptional quality that displays a great variety of forms. The creativity of Colette Ghysels' layouts and the quality of Mauro Magliani's photographs add to our visual pleasure.

From the standpoint of their shapes, many ethnic bracelets straddle the border area between two worlds: that of prehistory, where the traditions of some ethnic groups have been kept alive into the 20th century, and that of jewelry created by contemporary artists.

Just as with rings and earrings, bracelets and anklets punctuate the phases of one's life. Small rings, which tinkle with the least movement, preserve children from evil spirits in the Near East. All self-respecting Jewish brides from Sana'a wear several pairs of bracelets with gossamer filigree. In order to ensure abundant progeny, A Bengal bride will be given a bracelet made from a shell. A flat ivory bracelet rewards a Sudanese elephant hunter of the Dinka tribe for his bravery. And, when undertaking their final journal, both men and women surround themselves one last time with bracelets, such as the jade ones found in Chinese tombs.

the author guides us on a continent-by-continent tour, explaining the historic and cultural contexts in which these ethnic bracelets originated. Captions inform us of materials, dimensions and uses. A glossary of technical terms, maps and an index round off the descriptive information.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a helpful book for the serious collector.......2007-07-05

As dealer and collector of ethnographic arts from Africa I've found this book invaluable. And Africa is but one of this volume's beautifully photographed sections. Tribal groups around the world have developed bracelets- the most basic of human adornments- in stunning variety to express their ethnic identity. Although brief on text this book covers a lot of ground in celebrating and identifying the diversity.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect with a little but..........2007-05-11

Over the past years one can see a rising amount of publications dedicated to tribal art (primitive / ethnographic art) in many different ways. Books which intention is a scientific one and books which would like to attract regular (not already attracted to tribal arts) readers.
Even if the scientific books are something very helpfull for scholars, dealers, collectors and any other "hard core" enthusiats, the mostly doesn't attract general public too much.
Books which are made for many people mostly lack certain important information or doesn't always give very accurate or exact descriptions like all of the books from this serie (World of Rings/Necklaces/Belts...).
This sometimes inaccuracy and the little complicated way that you always have to go to the end of the book to read the captions belongig to the pictures is the biggest (if so, because it always depends very much on the reader) problem with this book
BUT
thats the only and for myself rather minor mistake.

On the other hand if you look through the book (as well as the others) you have a marvellous/wonderfull/phantastic view on a world of wonders.
Probably anybody will be surprised by the variations of a single theme. What people all over the world saw as a bracelet is sometimes unbelievable.
The book shows excellent pictures of pieces in very high quality; everything in color and displayed in a very well designed way which attracts the eye a lot.

Personally i think the most important thing is to SEE as much as possible (in quantity as well as in quality) which is very easily done with this book.
There hasn't been any kind of publication in this way ever before, hence i reccomend that if you like ethnic jewellry you will like this book.

Because of the problem mentioned above and the fact that if its called "world" of bracelets but leaves the Americas to a minimum (like the other books do as well - i would reccomend Mrs. Ghysels to collect a little more of the Americas) i can't rate it with 5 stars but with 4.

5 out of 5 stars Love the whole series!.......2004-06-20

This is a gorgeous book that will delight and inspire. The photos are beautiful and the accompanying captions, located in the back of the book, provide a good background on each piece. I recommend this entire series very highly (bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces).

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2003-08-06

This is a breathtaking, beyond-beautiful book of ethnic bracelets. If you're a jewlery artist, you will gain a tremendous amount of inspiration from this coffee-table (NOT a how-to) book. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Depends on what your looking for........2004-07-15

I just got this book the other night, so I haven't had the chance to thoroughly read it yet. So far, I think the text part is better than the photography. I find it easy to read and it seems to touch on several topics. Unfortunately, not being well versed in Native American/Indian history, I don't know how accurate that information is, so I'm no help in analyzing that part of the book. He seems to me to do a good job describing techinques, and the illustrations are helpful to me. If you're looking for good photos though, I would not recommend this book.

    4 out of 5 stars A Book for Beginners.......2000-08-23

Monte Smith has produced an excellent book for anyone wishing to begin authentic beadwork. He provides complete information regarding the materials and supplies needed. There is a lot of information about the technical aspects of this craft. The book has excellent illustrations on how to make the various stitches with beads on leather, which interested me the most. He has also included numerous photos of original artifacts that a person can use for design ideas. There is also a coded (by letters) reference under the photos which indicates the museums that have those items on display. The only improvement this basic book could have would be color photos which would be of help in selecting beads for a project.

4 out of 5 stars Southwest Indian Jewelry Guide Review.......2005-07-10

This is a great book for someone becoming acquainted with jewelry of the Southwest. The book contains background information about the region and the distinction between the Hopi,Zuni, and Navajo jewelry, as well as some other silver-smithing techniques used by the Indians

5 out of 5 stars Tiny size - lots of info.......2004-09-25

This tiny 46-page book is big on information. In it, you'll learn to recognize tribal jewelry styles and techniques. Although the first native American to learn silversmithing is not known, it appears to have begun among the Navajo in the 1850s, then was passed to the Zuni and Hopi.

When the railroads opened the Wild West, silverwork began to respond not just to the tastes of the silversmiths themselves, but to the travelers looking for a souvenir of their encounter with the exotic Southwest inhabitants.

The Navajo developed their style of setting large stones into cast, hammered, and stamped silver. The Zuni made clusterwork their forte, setting small turquoise stones in silver, called petitpoint and needlepoint. You'll learn the differences among mosaic, channel, and overlay inlays, about Pueblo fetish, and Santo Domingo heishi. The book shows both old and modern jewelry styles and is pocket-sized for easy reference when shopping.

    Product Description

A fascination with silver lured Daniel and Serga Nadler onto a global quest spanning many years and countries. Their search for authentic tribal and ethnic jewelry led to the realization that fashion everywhere rules both costumes and accessories. To the famous dictum of male sartorial elegance: "Clothing makes the man," the authors add: "and jewelry defines the woman." Their quest's outcome is this magnificent volume viewing adornments through the prism of fashion. It also details a series of indefatigable and often humorous journeys as the authors scour markets, villages, and shops in search of extraordinary silver jewelry and accessories. From the Foreword written by Tiffany & Co.'s Design Director, John Loring - a noted silver jewelry expert in his own right - plus a brilliant Introduction by Harold Koda, Curator of the Costume Institute at New York's Metropolitan Museum, to a discussion with the fashion world's icon, Oscar de la Renta, silver's reputation as a precious metal is undeniable. The book opens with the chapter "Accessorize !" The reader then joins the authors' travels around the globe, discussing their search for silver and the local customs, workmanships and styles. Their tale explores silver's traditions in Egypt; Tunisia; the Western Maghreb; the Middle East; Greece and Turkey; Russia and the Caucasus; Turkmenistan; the Indian Subcontinent; the Indonesian Archipelago; the nationalities of Southeast Asia (Burma, Thailand, and Southern China); the Indians of the American Southwest; Mexico, and concludes with contemporary designers. The Nadlers' collection is stunning and the journey which the reader is taken on is - like the pieces themselves - truly magnificent !

Many museums and high-class travel agencies have specialty tours that emphasize particular themes and often cost thousands of dollars. Now, for less than $100, one can learn about silver and fashion while vicariously touring the entire globe. The personal vignettes, the gorgeous imagery and the addition of clear and attractive maps make the reader feel as if he or she is traveling with the Nadlers and seeing the world of fashion and silver through their eyes. Since their taste is impeccable and their international perspective well-informed, penetrating and full of humor and adventure, this is a tour and a tour-de-force not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars a great book on jewelry and so much more.......2006-01-09

I live in Ottawa, Canada and last Septmber attended an illustrated lecture by Daniel Nadler on Silver: from Fetish to Fashion. It was so humorous, educational and interesting that I immediately bought his book. First, I approached if from the point of view of a fashion and jewelry-obsessed woman stuck in a mid-size Canadian city without access to great stores that can be found in some North American cities. I was amazed at how much I learnt about, not only fashion but geography, history, trade, ethnography, and most importantly the art of jewelry design. I highly recommend this book to fashionistas, artists, art students, jewelry designers and to anyone who would like to lose themselves in the world of wearable art. The Nadlers tell tales about their incredible collection with great wit and panache. Every chapter is full of well researched information. The photography of objects and women by both Nadlers is superlative. I have traveled through some of the regions but it was like seeing these places again through fresh eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A global journey to celebrate silver.......2006-01-07

What a well organized and beautifully illustrated book! The Nadlers have transformed their passion for silver into an arresting journey around the globe. Every chapter provides an interesting orientation. Beautiful photographs and appropriate maps guide the reader through the historical and cultural context of a myriad of fine examples of precious silver collected in each country. With over 400 pages of high quality and beautifully bound text, a wealth of information and visual beauty await the discerning reader and connoisseur.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Publication.......2006-01-06

I have many coffee table books which all have merit but when I got Silver From Fetish to Fashion I was completely amazed, not only for the spectacular photography but for the layout and intelligent grouping of the items. Anyone interested in Silver, Fashion and beyond to simply the Beautiful should have this book.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Introductory Book.......2005-01-01

All of the books by Ms Bassman are consistently well done. The layout and photography by Gene Balzer is excellent. If you are seeking a resource filled with beautiful photographs, this is one (along with Ms Bassman's companion publication re: Navajo jewelry) to add to your library. The only "flaw", if it is such, I could find with the two books was a very limited introduction and text (three pages). A+ for photos -- and C- for text/history. You'll enjoy this book!
