Book Description
World-renowned quilter Nancy Crow's work is presented for a general audience for the first time in this volume. Divided into nine major quilt series, the book shows not only the diversity and dynamism of Crow's work, but also many of the artifacts and places that inspired her. With excerpts from her journals and sketch books combined with side panels that track important events in her life, this book also gives insight into how Crow's thinking and art evolved after major events in her life. Many of the featured quilts have never before been photographed.

new avenues in the craft and art of quilting.......2007-03-06
Since the 1970s, Crow has been an unquestioned "catalyst and prime mover of the art quilt movement" for her belief that the medium of quilts contained "the potential for intense experimentation and a place in the centers of art exhibition and discussion." Anyone who sees quilts Crow has done will not deny this. By 1990 Crow's art quilts displaying "technical innovations [and] complex compositions [involving] inventive deconstructions and reconfigurations of historic quilt patterns melded with pattern and color relationships of Crow's own inventions" were attracting wider notice among quilters and in art circles for convincingly demonstrating the artist's belief about the potential of the medium. In recognition of this, this high-quality art book follows Crow's work from about 1990 to the present in bountifully-illustrated chapters covering a few years at a time. This format allows for the laying out of numerous of the art quilts while focusing on specific innovations and her creativity and growth in these most productive and creative years. This also gives space for Crow to regularly make comments on sources, techniques, and aims of particular quilts and ideas surrounding her art. A good, published poet--as an introductory poem by her evidences--Crow has much to say about self-knowledge and creativity. Crow's quilts with their dramatically-arranged, vivid geometric shapes have the presence of a work of art. Practically single-handed with the interest and encouragement of quilting enthusiasts, she has modernized quilt-making by changing it from a tradition-bound craft with limited artistic aspects to an art with reminiscences of its origins in American crafts.

A Great Tutorial on Knitting Orenburg Lace.......2006-06-09
This book is extremely detailed in the art of knitting Orenburg Shawls. There are charts for basic patterns used in the traditional shawls and at the back a full shawl is charted for practice knitting Orenburg Lace. There is even a small sampler shawl you can knit to learn the techniques of the full sized ones. A great book, necessary for any lace knitter.
Shawls that weigh 80 grams and look like fairy wings.......2001-01-29
There are directions here to knit Orenburg-style shawls, but unless you are an experienced knitter, you may find that the instructions are a bit frustrating. Orenburg shawls look a lot like Shetland cobweb lace shawls (but which came first? Orenburg shawls are mentioned in writing at least back to the beginning of the 18th Century.) The technique starts with an edging, then corners are turned and the body of the lace shawl is knitted together with the side edging.
The best part of this book is the history and story of the life of the Orenburg knitters, who even today support their families by knitting gorgeous works of art out of handspun silky mohair yarn. This book is a must if you are a lace knitter.
great, but sometimes stumbles.......2000-04-16
My problem with the book is pretty small. For the most part I think it is a very beautiful and special book. The shawls are beautiful and the text is interesting. My only problem is that the instructions for the full-size shawl are a little iffy in points, like telling you to knit in the "corner stitch" without once ever explaining this maneuver. Mostly a beautiful book, though
A beautiful introduction to a neglected regional craft.......1999-05-25
While all lace knitters are familiar with Shetland lace, this book will take you to less familiar territory and introduce you to women who have been carrying on the tradition of glorious lace for a few hundred years.
While as much an introduction to the microculture of Orenburg knitters than a "how-to", the authors nevertheless succeed in stirring the creative juices with page after page of pictures of absolutely gorgeous shawls. Some directions are written out, some are in chart form. Recommended for the experienced lace knitter.

Inspirational.......2002-03-22
For those who enjoy fine needlework and aspire to expertise, this book is inspirational. Excellent photos of embroidered treasures from throughout the world and throughout history with well-researched descriptions. Does not contain instruction, you will have to take a class for that.
Beautiful enough for the coffee table in the living room.
Book Description
The exquisite and everyday beautiful linens and lace photographed for this book represent collectible household styles made in Europe and North America during the 20th century. Both rare and commonly found examples are included so that readers can learn to differentiate between the two groups. The chapters are organized by types of work, including Appenzell, Battenberg, Bobbin lace, chemical and other machine laces, crochet, cutwork, embroidery, linen damask, explained with origins and copies liberally discussed. The photographs are breathtaking, from over-all room settings to minute details. This is a visually exciting book. The price guide is a valuable tool for this expanding field of collectibles which seem to be undervalued when the quality and supply of fine examples are considered.

Very helpful and informative reference book........2000-07-16
I found this book to be extremely helpful in identifying popular linen styles and items for a collector. The pictures were clear and the descriptions sufficient for my needs. This is a good addition to a collector's library.
Musings from thelinenlady on '20th Century Lace and Linens'.......2000-03-24
As a long time linen lover and now professional dealer I find this tombe to be a wonderful 'picture' book ~ but when it comes to actual informative content I feel that there are better sources ~ the information given is helpfull for the beginning to intermediate collector and the pictures are exquisite but somehow the lack of detail in the narrative portions undermines the supossed purpose of the book. To its credit the book is nicely arranged by subject but lacks a comprehensive glossary. Overall, not a bad place to start whet your appetite for knowledge about vintage linens, but if you want detailed informtion supported by anyting more than cursory research you will put the book down hungry. ~ Sincerly, Ann Christine ~ thelinenlady

beautiful patterns.......2003-08-14
they are beautiful patterns, but not what i was looking for. Im not found of making bedspreads from thread [ tho there is no denying their beauty!] or even lace to sew on dresses, hang on shelf ends etc. I was thinking / hoping there would have been more doilies and baby items in this booklet. It's pretty good anyways, just not my favorite.
Great Patterns for Intermediate to Advanced Crocheters.......2001-12-16
Lots of Irish crochet doily patterns! Irish crochet is an intermediate to advanced technique of crocheting. It is very tedious and time consuming, yet the results are stunning! This book has easy to follow written out instructions. Most of these designs may take some time to master, but you'll definitely end up with an heirloom treasure. Rita Weiss and Dover always have outstanding crochet patterns as well as other needlecraft books. Put them on your top 5 best sellers!

This is a great book, it has easy to follow instructions and is put together in such a way that by the end of the book you can put together some wonderful works.
very good book on irish crochet.......2006-04-15
Although this book has very few pages I find it to be very informing about Irish crochet. And at a good price. The instructions might be confusing for a beginner as another reviewer has mentioned but with some effort and patience you can get results.
pleased!.......2006-01-15
Love the book! Thankyou!
Lovely Reproduction.......2005-12-06
I am a huge collector of the older patterns and this happens to be one of them. Buy this one to use and make some of your own heirlooms that can be passed down from generation to generation, the pictures and instructions are excellent.
to complicated for me.......2003-08-14
I have to confess, I love crocheting, but altho the items in this booklet are beautiful the directions are time consuming and a bit more complicated than I like. I crochet for pleasure, im not a pro, so Im just not up to these patterns!
