an introductory text.......2007-07-29
This book and the workbook were required for a machine shop class I took. The Amazon description is pretty accurate. It is written for someone in a vocational training program who will be working in the industry rather than a home workshop. The book covers a lot of material, but doesn't go into depth on any of it. Its a pretty good introductory book, but its kind of expensive. I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't required for the class. If you are just interested in learning to operate a certain machine, like a mill or lathe, or if you are interested in machining as a hobby I think there are probably better books. I am giving it 3 stars because of the high price, and many of the photos are not high enough quality, especially considering the price.
well organised and illustrated.Lacking in metric info........1998-06-21
I find this book clear and easy to read on machining topics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners to intermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. I would also like to see a change to more up to date toolposts and tool holders for the lathes.

Book Description
Once again, in this expanded Second Edition, Gary Howard outlines what good teachers know, what they do, and how they embrace culturally responsive teaching. Howard brings his bestselling book completely up to date with today's school reform efforts and includes a new introduction and a new chapter that speak directly to current issues such as closing the achievement gap, and to recent legislation such as No Child Left Behind. With our nation's student population becoming ever more diverse, and teachers remaining largely White, this book is now more important than ever. A must-read in universities and school systems throughout the country, We Can't Teach What We Don't Know continues to facilitate and deepen the discussion of race and social justice in education.
Customer Reviews:
A useless book..........2007-09-14
The author spends half the book trying to establish (and burnish, in my opinion) his "Culturally Sensitive White Guy" credentials and the other half stating the freaking obvious. If you've ever lived in an area with more than one race, you'll get precious little from this book. On the other hand, if you're from northern Idaho, this might be just the ticket...
Reflections on We Can't Teach What We Don't Know: White Teachers, Multiracial Schools.......2007-03-29
I found this book settling in the midst of my own efforts to sort out and address issues of White priviledge and dominance.
Gray Howard shares his journey through the difficult world and work of multicultural understanding with humor and sensitivity. He identifies the unspoken truths about priviledge and dominance in western culture, in such a way that relieves the burden of guilt, allows for self-reflection, and maps a path for growth for White educators.
The book addresses three key themes: Recognizing and acknowledging the dynamics of dominance; defining the stages of racial identity transformation; and identifying the ways in which improving cultural sensitivity can postively impact the lives and education of all students.
Howard encourages White teachers to explore their own racial identities and move along the path towards a transformationist White identity that seeks and values diverse points of view, connects with one's own cultural roots, involves self and students in explorations of other cultures and perspectives, engages in social action, and continues to grow and change.
This is not a "How To" book with road map to change, it is more of a "Why to" book with a topograhical map to help you plan your journey. Having read this book, I am inspired to continue my travels. To seek more information and find ways to promote a more intentional multicultural focus in my school and community.
I recommend this book for those teachers (White and otherwise) who are interested in or have already embarked on their own journeys.
Info on multicultural education.......2007-02-14
This book is very informative. It gives new insight into how we as educators must refrain from the blame game and teach our students how to appreciate each of the individual cultures around the globe.
Also Useful for Teachers of Color.......2006-10-13
This book was a nice surprise as a pre-service teacher in education classes where the realities of white supremacy is not discussed, the first hand experiences of teachers of color are silenced, black/Latino or "at-risk multicultural" students are demonized, poor white kids are invisible and the issues of other groups are addressed superficially through "practical strategies"mandated by here today/ gone tomorrow popular scholars. This book gave me as an African American educator a space to see how whiteness functions in everyone's lives in the public school system. Each page helped me understand better why white people sometimes act in certain ways.
Thank you Gary Howard for the excellent analysis and methods for all teachers to use as they transform themselves and their schools.

A Must for Working Women.......2006-12-03
This book is great. It focuses on what women do in the workplace that underminds thier career. It also talks about how you should act. It's a great book for women working in a corperate jungle. It's a little hard to read at times, and she focuses on her life experiences in the magazine industry. Therefore, some of the things she talks about don't relate well to my field. I'm sure reading this book will help me in my career.
Highly valuable book, even if you're not a self-help type.......2006-10-05
I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book. My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers. I still am not. But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:
-Don't always need to be liked
-Don't smile too easily
-Don't apologize too quickly
-Don't clean up after other colleagues (especially men)
-Don't be a perfectionist at the expense of innovative thinking or getting things done
Simply the notion that men and women (in broad strokes, at least) behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace was a novel idea to me, coming out of a liberal arts college during the mid-1990s. Reading this book gave me an awareness that everyone needs. Obviously, no one book will apply perfectly to each of us, so you can't go looking for that. But do look to this book for many useful ways of seeing the professional world and your own role in it.
Enjoyed, learned but read it all with a grain of salt!.......2006-06-10
I have never believed, or wanted to believe, in the feminist views of the world. I like to believe that if we focus on results, deliverables, and excellent performance and good merit, we will indeed get ahead - man or woman - in corporate america. Reading this book however did have certain advice in handling some situations that only arise for women in the workplace. Not every bit of advice or circumstance applies to all of us, but overall, this was a very good read, I took bits and pieces of advice from Kate and really did enjoy her stories and her candid sharing of the experience she had been through. I really do recommend it to everyone - not just women. It's good to be aware of our ingrained beliefs and learn to let go of them and face life with a much more open mind.
People Pleasing is not the way to go.......2006-06-01
This is the golden advice: people pleasing is distinct from delivering credible results. In the world of world it is being respected that wins the day. Being liked is a matter of fickleness and not based on results. Results that are measured are all that matters.
Not for "Every Working Woman".......2006-05-24
This book applies to women who are in leadership positions, which I am not, so I despise the title "Nine Secrets Every Working Woman Must Know". It's misleading. I'm currently reading this book and have only found a small paragraph that applies to "every working woman." Given the title, I thought the book would give helpful tips on getting ahead for the average working woman, but it doesn't. Needless to say, it didn't do me much good for where I am currently in my career.

Irreverent, invaluable, and a lot cheaper than a years tuition, this friendly guide is the smartest investment any future filmmaker could make.
Customer Reviews:
Fun but Useless.......2006-12-05
If you want something that might motivate you to make a film..-_- then go ahead and buy it... but dont expect to learn anything useful.
Enjoyable read, but limited in focus.......2006-11-08
I just finished this book and thought I would share a few things, good and the not so good.
First the good:
The authors do a really nice job explaining a lot things first time filmmakers might have trouble with, in other words, the 'gotchas'. Things as blaringly obvious as backup batteries and duct tape are included. They touch on a lot of things one should consider when making films.
The book is well laid out and lead one from beginning to end, like a good story. It was a very easy read and sometimes out-loud funny. They talk a lot about dealing with personalities, which is both good and bad.
Which leads me to the not so good:
As encouraging as they are, at times they bring up so many difficulties that one wonders why anyone would bother to make a film at all. The book is alternately encouraging and discouraging.
Given that they are both former film students, this book relies heavily on their film school background, which is an advantage for film school students, but not as useful for non-traditional film students (like Jeunet and myself). They reference the Hollywood film industry/culture almost exclusively, which again does not help those who are based elsewhere.
Bottom line:
I found this book useful, but not as much as I had hoped. This book is ideal for anyone who went to film school, but is only half helpful for the rest of us. The cover is a little deceiving (blame marketing) in that the publisher makes the book sound ideal for any filmmaker. Despite the flaws, I find it to be a useful reference for my filmmaking endeavors. I give this four stars, one extra star than I normally would have, just for sheer entertainment and readability value.
The push you need to make films.......2006-08-20
This book gave me the final nudge that I needed to go out and make my own films. It is light on the 'technique-side' but there are already enough books on that. What's missing is some inspirational words to muster up the courage as well as some wisdom to make your first filmmaking experience easier and this book fulfills those needs.
If you're interested in seeing how a newbie uses this book in making his own first film visit my film blog at www.kasemkharsa.com/empire
A mix of inspirational and practical advice.......2006-06-03
I'm currently enrolled in a university film program. Many of the teachers give a grim forecast of the job market and breaking into the industry. For me, this book was a breath of fresh air. It gives advice from party etiquette to budgeting to breaking through a writing block. All the advice is mixed with humor and interesting tidbits. Through their words, I could feel that the authors love making films. In turn, reading this book made me really exciting about pursuing a career in this field. However, I did feel that a lot of their advice was a matter of common sense. If you're looking for an easy read to get you pumped about working in this industry...this is a great book.
Great Motivation to Get Out There and Get Creating!.......2006-03-08
I really enjoyed this book. While I was expecting more of a literal take on the "what they don't teach you at film school" part of the book, I was still pleasantly surprised. The authors really break down the information for you and make it easy to digest. It's truthful and written with a down to earth perspective. When I bought the book I was expecting more focus on technique and "rules" associated with the craft but found it to be more along the lines of a really good pep talk. If you're feeling discouraged or overwhelmed with making your own films this is the book for you, full of very good and practical advice.

Book Description
The Reformation swept across Europe with a God-glorifying gospel of grace. Now the doctrine of grace cherished and proclaimed by the Reformers is under renewed assault from an unexpected placeâthe evangelical church itself.
With the help of several theologians, Gary L. W. Johnson and Guy P. Waters trace the background and development of two seemingly disparate movements that have surfaced within the contemporary churchâthe New Perspective(s) on Paul and the Federal Visionâand how they corrupt the truth of salvation by faith alone. By regaining a focus on the doctrine of grace, pastors, seminarians, and future leaders can regain the cohesion, coherence, and direction to truly build the church to withstand the attacks of false and empty doctrines.
âIf you have been unsettled or impressed by the arguments of the New Perspectives or the Federal Visionâthis book is for you. By Faith Alone is a serious and substantial rejoinder to the new viewpoints on justification, imputation, covenant theology, and more.â
J. Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi; President, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals; Adjunct Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary
âThe twin pillars of historic Protestantismâthe authority of the Bible and justification by faith aloneâhave been under attack since the beginning of the Reformation. But the recent assault on justification by the New Perspective on Paul and by the Federal Vision is particularly pernicious, cloaked as it is in apparent scholarship and piety. This important book defends the historic Reformation doctrine with better scholarship and more profound piety.â
W. Robert Godfrey, President and Professor of Church History, Westminster Seminary California
âIn the sixteenth century, Martin Luther boldly declared that the doctrine of justification is the article by which the church stands or falls. In the twenty-first century, many churches have not stood their ground but have fallen prey to the voices of those who have offered new perspectives on an ancient, biblical doctrine. I am thankful the Lord has raised up faithful men to provide the people of God with a clear, biblical perspective on this most precious doctrine.â
Burk Parsons, Editor,
Tabletalk magazine; Minister of Congregational Life, Saint Andrew’s Chapel, Sanford, Florida

Thought-provoking theological essays.......2007-04-11
This is a very thought-provoking series of theological essays engaging the contemporary challenges to the historic Reformed understanding of the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Any book of this sort, with multiple contributors, is bound to be somewhat uneven in quality - but this is one of the better books of this sort that I've seen.
Here is the table of contents, interspersed with my brief comments.
1. What did Saint Paul Really Say? N. T. Wright and the New Perspective(s) on Paul - Cornelis P. Venema
2. Observations on N. T. Wright's Biblical Theology with Special Consideration of the "Faithfulness of God" - T. David Gordon
These first two chapters engage the writings of N. T. Wright, who is probably the highest profile proponent of the New Perspective on Paul (and is also one of the most renowned contemporary Jesus scholars). Their critiques of Wright are very, very insightful and should be seriously considered. Everything really does seem to fall on Wright's embrace of a certain way of reading Second Temple Judaism (as non-legalistic) and his interpretation of the phrase "dikaiosune theou" as "the covenant faithfulness of God" instead of "the righteousness of God." This second question is adequately challanged in the second chapter of this book.
3. A Justification of Imputed Righteousness - Richard D. Phillips
4. The Foundational Term for Christian Salvation: Imputation - C. F. Allison
These two chapters address the recent controversies surrounding the doctrine of imputation. Having read Piper's defense of imputation in Counted Righteous in Christ, as well as Carson's essay in the volume on Justification edited by Husbands, I still found these chapters very helpful and persuasive (I've not yet read Brian Vicker's Jesus Blood AND Righteousness, a recent more in-depth treatment of imputation). These essays were very good.
5. Reflections on Auburn Theology - T. David Gordon
This was a little less interesting to me, probably b/c I'm not Presbyterian.
6. To Obey is Better than Sacrifice: A Defense of the Active Obedience of Christ - David Van Drunen
As I recall, this was also a good essay, defending the necessity and imputation of the active obedience of Christ to believers
7. Covenant, Inheritance, and Typology: Understanding the Principles at Work in God's Covenants - R. F. White & E. C. Beisner
Of all the essays in this book, this one stands out as the most helpful and the one that will repay several re-readings in the future. The authors set out to show why the theological construct of covenant theology (as traditionally understood in Reformed theology) is biblically-faithful and warranted from the texts (even though the language is sometimes extra-biblical). Most helpful was their contrasting the two principles of inheritance, by either personal merit or representative merit, and then tracing these two principles through the various historical covenants. This is the best thing on covenant theology that I've read so far (though my reading in this area has not been very wide).
8. Why the Covenant of Works is a Necessary Doctrine: Revisiting the Objections to a Venerable Reformed Doctrine - John Bolt
As with the chapter 7, this was a very, very helpful treatment of covenant theology, specifically the covenant of works. Bolt is an excellent and lucid writer and I finished the essay wanting to read more of his material.
9. The Reformation, Today's Evangelicals, and Mormons: What Next? - Gary L. W. Johnson
This essay was good, but seemed a little bit displaced in this volume.
Overall, this is a very good volume and worth reading for those engaged in the current debates over justification. However, if you are only going to read one book on the New Perspective on Paul, get Stephen Westerholm's Perspectives Old and New: The Lutheran Paul and His Critics. It is much more comprehensive and has been the most important book I've read on the issue.

Book Description
White Men Can't Hump is a book of hope. The hope is that one day Black Men in America will no longer be viewed as unintelligent, unattractive, undesirable, uncivilized, and just plain old worthless. White Men Can't Hump will address why Black Men in America are perceived in such a negative way, and will also explore the origins of this negativity. White Men Can't Hump will also explore how this negativity has been spread for the last four centuries (a la stereotypes), and why this negativity has been spread (a la "Fear of the Black Penis"). Several of these so-called negative Stereotypes will be closely examined and shown in a new light. White Men Can't Hump will ask why two well known Stereotypes that have been historically assigned to Black Men, are only considered negative when applied to Black Men. Most men desire a large Penis and an elevated sexual prowess, but all across America (in offices, bars and locker rooms) the Black Penis and Black Prowess are routinely the Punch Line to jokes. White Men Can't Hump will ask why, and will also ask a question that will create a debate for the ages: "Who's better in bed, Black Men or White Men?" White Men Can't Hump will take you the reader on an educational and enlightening journey through America's past and present with the hope of changing America's future. So sit back and enjoy or cuss, agree or disagree, and most importantly think with an open mind. Because whether you like it or not, White Men Can't Hump tells the story of who all of us are, where we've come from, and where we're going. White Men Can't Hump is divided into two VOLUMES. VOLUME I focuses on how Sex has historically affected Race relations in America, and VOLUME II focuses on how Race has affected Sex relations in America. Don't be confused by the similar titles because both VOLUMES pack a different Sexual, Racial, Political, and Social punch. A powerful learning experience.......2007-06-09
Well! I just finished both volumes and found the book raw, bold and powerful. It also was humorous at times (I too, was laughing out loud at Volume II) but it taught me so much of what I didn't know.
I was fortunate enough to meet Todd and his brother Chris at Book Expo America and enjoyed our time together very much.
In my humble opinion, the book is extremely important for all of us. Todd's salient lesson is an uplifting one to black men and women, a wake-up call to those of the white race and a healing one to all in the human race. His "warnings" and discussion of the African's role in the slave trade in the beginning of Volume I pulls one right into the book and then his frank explanation of the core of resentment between races becomes clear. He then chronicles the brainwashing of the American public as well as what black men have had to endure including saddening lynching descriptions. He also comments on pop culture in a very succinct way. His comments are the opposite of wishy-washy!
I wrote a book about a white artist who fell in love with the Black culture and I'm happy to report that there are black angels and beautiful, elegant black women as well as dignified black men in his art. He saw their beauty back in the mid-twentieth century while racism was all around him.
Upon researching turn of the 20th century art for a new project, I came across newspapers from the 1890s-1900s which consistently would have an article about a "negro" attacking someone. Oddly enough, it could be a newspaper from a small town in Virginia and the article would be about an incident in Albuquerque - sometimes on the front page! I found it appalling and part of the brainwashing that Todd writes about.
This book will promote much lively discussion among all races, and it concludes with a positive message - something we all desperately need today. It's also perfect for a library book group - especially a multicultural one - providing the members aren't prudes. Congratulations to Todd and Chris! It was a great, informative read.
Hope of a new generation.......2007-05-18
The author's knowlege and wisdom are being passed on to the reader with candor in a way that's easy to read, but sometimes hard to swallow. I only hope that this book becomes necessary reading for the youth of today (black and white alike) so that they may grow, and not allow themselves to become what society expects out of them.
A must read.......2007-05-13
WMCH Volume II is as good as volume I. I think both books are a must read for everyone who cares about race relations. Volume I is a history lesson touching on history not taught in schools and events not covered by the media. Volume II takes a humorous look at race stereo types and leaves you saying "Hmmm he has appoint".
I feel like I was looking at life with blinders on. I think both books would be excellent for book clubs to read and discus and even used in schools (Under 18yr should be at the discretion of the parents). I loved both books and highly recommend both.

I read White Men Can't Hump VOLUME I last month and I truly enjoyed every single page of it, but after reading VOLUME II I'm stunned there's no public discussion about either book. I enjoyed VOLUME II a little more because there's more humor and it appeals more to my generation (X). I caught myself laughing/screaming out loud countless times. VOLUME I is a history lesson that evokes raw emotion from the reader, and psychologically breaks you down and challenges you. If you can make it thru the chapter Lynching Psychology 101 without shedding a tear, you're not human. I can't wait to read both of them again, back-to-back, as intended. I consider both of these books social masterpieces because they expose what's at the heart of America's racial tensions like no other books I've ever read. This guy used the Republican formula of taking a person or legislation and putting a face or label on it. He re-defines racism and put a face on it, thus making it a tangible living and breathing element. He used the same spin tactics that Rove and the G.O.P. use, but he used it to describe America's ills. Terms like Limpbaugh Syndrome and Small-Poleons Complex are hilarious on the surface, but when he applies these terms that he created (in order to re-define certain kinds of bigotry) you'll find yourself enlightened and amazed. He spins all of the buffoonery about black male sexuality into a premise that is not very funny when he finishes. No Black Man has ever had the courage to say- If these things you've said about us for centuries are true, then we must be better in the bedroom than you. That may sound silly on the surface, but when that premise is posed to those who enjoy the bufoonery, it immediately changes the tone of the debate. Those well-known stereotypes are funny when portrayed negatively or comedically, but when he converts them to real-life bedroom activity it erases the smiles off of certain faces. If this book finds its way into the mainstream, a certain segment of our population will no longer find VH1's ridiculous Flavor of Love so humorous. I can't recommend these two books enough. Enlightenment meets Enjoyment!!!

Book Description
What's evil to one person may be a virtue to another. White Men Can't Hump is going to open America's Racial and Sexual Pandora's Box. This will allow you the reader to decide what is evil and what is not evil. In America what is considered a virtue when applied to White Men, is usually considered evil when applied to Black Men. White Men Can't Hump will ask why, and will give possible answers. White Men Can't Hump is a book for all Races, creeds, colors and genders; so please sit down and take some time to get to know it. After all, isn't that what we do when we meet someone different for the first time? What W.M.C.H. will do is help people discuss the uncomfortable subject of Race by combining Race with a subject that people Love to discuss, Sex. My first hope is that by combining the two subjects' people will see each of them in a new light, and therefore see each other in a new light.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - What is your legacy?.......2007-08-04
Todd Wooten intends to open America's Racial and Sexual Pandora's box, and give readers the opportunity to determine what is evil and what is not. He adamantly alludes to the assumption that things considered a virtue when applied to white men are usually considered an evil when applied to Black men.
The basic premise of this book is that racism against Black men emanates from "Fear of the Black penis." Some of the evidence the author provides is overwhelming. He details many indisputable facts: the lynching of Black Men in the early 1900's, and the castration ritual that usually accompanied these murders, the anti-miscegenation laws, the case of the Scottsboro Boys, the Tuskegee Experiment, and more. He voices how Hollywood still neuters Black men and exploits Black women. He highlights the disparity in how the media, as well as the criminal justice system, portray Black males versus white males. Wooten hopes the day will come when Black men in America will no longer be viewed as unintelligent, unattractive, undesirable, uncivilized, and worthless.
Because of the overt title, many people will overlook this book, and will undoubtedly miss a very important message. WHITE MEN CAN'T HUMP is full of hidden truths and substantiated statistics, but also shares Wooten's distinct opinions. It took courage to publicly speak about the volatile topics that were addressed. A thought provoking read, which asks questions that will create heated debates, and will make people aware of racial surroundings.
WISDOM AND HUMOR ON RACE AND SEX.......2007-07-02
Reading this book feels like a great, deep conversation over dinner with a dear friend. This book is a consummate critical analysis of bigotry and bias in all arenas. Wooten's hilarious sense of humor balances the sting of his profound wisdom and righteous rage.
Wooten's humor is evident upon every page. Read this amusing, intellectual, and wonderful book today. I love this author. His style and tone are revolutionary!

Mr. Wooten has done the impossible. He has presented a taboo topic with humor and intelligence. After reading countless books with no substance and incredible humor (or vice versa), I was both impressed and relieved to read this book. The information presented is fascinating, factual and funny. As we all know, this is rare in any book that discusses race in America. Thank God we finally have a book like this. I was so tired of reading dry, textbook like volumes on American race relations. Mr. Wooten is a breath of fresh air.
Don't Judge A Book By The Cover.......2007-05-16
It's apparent why the author has chosen to place this saying on every single page of both volumes. These books are packed with historical, financial and social facts of how we live in this country. To be honest I was a little reluctant when a friend asked me to visit the author's website; I thought it may be just another "one of those books", but after visiting the site I immediately ordered it. This is by far one of the most interesting reads I have run across in years! The detail and time it must have taken in writing these books can only be commended, but the books are outstanding. These books in my opinion are a must read!!
very thought provoking.......2007-05-14
I just finished the book and very much enjoyed it, The Author did a lot of research, with the history and the subject matter. I have personally experenced some of what the Author was talking about. If a person did not read the whole book,(both) from cover to cover then I could see a person having the wrong ideal about this book, being strictly a racist book but it's not. People have to walk in another mans foot steps to understand this book. It's a rare thing for a white person to be in the minority and loose that comfort zone. Afican Americans live the life of being uncomfortable on a dailey basis, a real christian try,s not to judge a man by his skin color but by his charicter. Try to get to know someone who do not look like you. Try it you might like it.
The book delves into the differeces that Whites have versus Blacks, just the simple thing of what a white man vs a Black man likes in a women. The stereo types that both races use on one another and about other races.
Read the Book and then make a decision about what point that Author is trying to make.

Book Description
Never have the stakes been higher. Never have two people faced greater risks or grappled with deeper desire. Never has Cherry Adair–award-winning author of Hot Ice–burned the pages with so much blazing action and blistering passion.
Professional art restorer Emily Greene is in no mood to see the devil-may-care Max Aries. She hasn’t forgotten–or forgiven–the way Max dropped into her life a year ago, stole her heart, then vanished without a word. Max hadn’t kept in touch with his father, Daniel, either. Daniel Aries had been a master of art restoration and reproduction, and not only Emily’s longtime mentor, but a trusted friend. His unexpected suicide devastates her. And when the prodigal playboy Max returns, her welcome is less than warm–even though his timely arrival in her bedroom saves her from a lethal intruder. But her fury gives way to fear when Max reveals that his father’s death was actually murder . . . and that Emily’s life is now in danger. Like it or not, to stay alive, Emily must put herself in Max’s hands. And once upon a time, that wasn’t such a bad place to be.
But what killer would target professional restorers of Renaissance artworks? Max suspects that a pencil sketch found in his father’s studio, inscribed with a cryptic code, may hold the key. His hunch is confirmed when intel from his control at the counterterrorist organization T-FLAC reveals that the Black Rose terror cell is involved–a chilling revelation that elevates the threat level almost as high as the tension that’s bristling between Max and Emily. Max isn’t about to take his eyes off Emily–though only partly for professional reasons–and even Emily’s rage over Max’s take-charge attitude can’t compare to her anger at herself for so long denying the truer, deeper feelings she has for him. As they crisscross Europe, piecing together the shocking clues to an insidious international plot, dodging increasingly lethal traps, and passionately making up for too much lost time, they realize that–in more ways than one–they can’t live without each other. With no chance of turning back, Max and Emily must put their lives on the line, put their true feelings to the test . . . and get ready to take the heat.

Cherry Adair does it again!.......2007-08-30
I have been reading Cherry's books since her first Harlequin, Mercenary and have loved all of them.
White Heat does not disappoint!
Max Aries had an affair with Emily Greene the year before when he was on an assignment. His father, who he is estranged from, was her mentor and it looks like he's been murdered. Emily has had three attempts on her life and she and Max are on the run.
White Heat is a terrific romantic suspense. It's a non stop thrill ride through the world of art restorers, Europe, the U.S. and of course T-FLAC.
The chemistry between Emily and Max sizzles and the twists and turns of the story will keep you on your toes.
Great book! I can't wait until the next one!
Another hot T-FLAC romantic suspense.......2007-08-29
In between assignments, T-FLAC team lead Max Aries is in Florence to settle the estate of his recently deceased father. The two weren't close; he referred to dad as a "sperm donor" in fact. When he arrives at the villa of his former lover (and protégé of his artist father), Emily is being attacked by an armed intruder. Max jumps into the fray, only to get clocked with a frying pan and kicked in the jewels for his efforts. Emily specialized in reproducing great works of art for a wealthy man who donates his paintings to churches but still wants their likeness hanging in his home. When other artists that have duplicated paintings all die under mysterious circumstances, Max is convinced that Emily is a target and that a rogue T-FLAC agent is responsible. But she is adamant about not getting involved with Max again, as he broke her heart the last time he was in town.
The great thing about Cherry Adair is she combines great action with really sensuous storylines. She also incorporates recurring characters - but their appearance is there to move the story along. Her heroines tend not to be wallflowers, and for the most part, Emily falls into this category. But be warned - this one is much gorier than any of her earlier T-FLAC novels - plenty of blood and guts - but it works within the context of the story. One drawback is that the rogue agent, Catherine Savage, was never in the foreground of the story - everything related to her character was handled off line- just seemed odd. I found her to be an intriguing character that I wanted to get to know. Even so, this is a well rounded novel - the 11th in the T-FLAC series - but can easily stand on its own merits and its not necessary to read the first ten to get the gist of the back story.
ENTERTAINING.......2007-08-26
THIS BOOK KEPT ME ENTERTAINED FROM BEGINNING TO END. IT WAS A LITTLE MORE VIOLENT THAN I WAS USED TO BUT I WANTED TO KNOW WHO THE BOSS OF THE BLACK LILLY WAS. I LIKED MAX AND EMILY ALOT. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A VERY GOOD READ.
Good Read.......2007-08-23
This book was very exciting and intense, it had just the right amount of action and steamy scenes. I can't wait for the next T-Flac book.
WHITE HEAT CAUSES LOW BURN.......2007-08-16
First read of Cherry Adair. Max was, I guess, HOT, but Emily was at one point strong then needed Max to pull her out of another situation; time and time again.
Sensuality is a 7. Fairly well done. Cover of the book was lovely. I thought it was a bit of too much fantasy but I read on. What interested me most was the naming of various paintings by various artists; Vermeer, etc. I looked them up on the Internet and got a minor education in art literature.
Otherwise, it was a fair read. Perhaps I should have had a background on Ms. Adair's earlier books. Maybe someday.

Customer Reviews:
previous edition much better.......2007-09-12
The new addition by Brinkerhoff et. al., though it provides the basics for teaching introduction to Sociology and by far one of the best texts available, is more efficient, but sacrifices much needed information. The recent edition deletes a chapter and attempts to incorparate issues of poverty and inequality in the other chapters, but this really needs to be its own chapter, so I would recommend that they reintroduce it in future editions. Furthermore, their population and urban discussion is good, but its environmental discussion is weak. They really need to add a stronger environmental piece. Furthermore, I really thought that their section on religion was much better in the previous edition. Students had a much easier time grasping concepts. The authors redid this section and now the distinct sects and subsects are unclear. Finally, I would recommend that if you use this book that you find supplemental material on social stratification, social inequality and social differentiation because the book does a poor job discussing the differences. I also would recommend supplemental materials to discuss the race and ethnicity chapter because its discussion on ideological racism and its history is weak.
Despite my minor critiques, I still would hightly recommend this book.

Book Description
What kind of first impression do you make? A first impression is the most important impression you’ll ever make—and you get only one chance to make it. Business deals can be made or broken, first dates become second dates or not, friendships are created or fail to form; everything hinges on that all-important initial encounter. And yet most of us don’t know how we’re really seen by others. Many of us don’t know how to make a good impression.
Wouldn’t you like others to see you as confident, interesting, attractive, and sincere? Ann Demarais, Ph.D., and Valerie White, Ph.D., consultants to many Fortune 100 companies as well as creators of First Impressions, Inc., a New York–based dating and consulting firm, offer you the keys to putting your best self forward in any new situation, whether you want to strike up a conversation at a party or are meeting a blind date or a new business client.
You’ll learn to see yourself as others see you, and how to tweak your style to create the impression that reflects the real you. Breaking down a successful first impression into its seven fundamentals, the authors show you how to master these principles so that you can make the best first impression. They also show how to avoid common misunderstandings that leave others with a bad impression, how to reveal the four universal social gifts, and they outline practical steps you can take to enhance your personal charm.
Informative and filled with enlightening research studies, do-it-yourself checklist reviews, and dozens of helpful case histories, First Impressions is a fun, groundbreaking, and long-overdue guide to the most important moment of virtually any relationship: the first.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant and simple.......2007-07-17
At first glance, this book seems pretty simplistic--make good eye contact, don't talk too much, choose topics appropriate for the situation--but this book is far more valuable than the elementary advice would suggest. First, almost everyone needs these reminders now and then. More importantly, the authors are able to explain vague but universal concepts in an exceptionally clear way. For example, what is the definition of "nice" or how would you define "sex appeal"? This book defines those words and more, making it extremely insightful in the study of personal interactions, from first impressions and beyond.
I found it boring and useless..........2007-07-12
I didn't get all the way through or even more than partially through, it just bored me too much in the beginning and seemed to just state common sense. I didn't read the ratings but most people (who I'm assuming read it all the way through) seemed to really like it so I suggest reading their reviews and seeing what I may have missed later on in the book.
Very Well Written Book.......2006-11-12
I bought this book after listening to Dr. Demarais on NPR. This is a very well written and easy to read book with good concepts that you need to put into practice. Therefore, I wish the authors come out with an abridged audio version to listen to again and again because you need to get these ideas ingrained inside you and become second nature. Even though this book is geared towards creating impressions on a date, I highly recommend this book to anyone whose job involves dealing with people.
First Impressions Demystified.......2006-10-17
Go ahead and buy this book, and act on the authors advice, and watch how subtle changes in first impressions can make a big difference. Probably the best among us will find something to learn to make it worthwhile reading.
That said, the authors do overstate their advice. First impressions have an important part in social encounters, but they don't determine indefinitly how others perceive you. For example, in one story the authors describe one of their clients who took some time to warm up during a simulated date, but was otherwise socially adept. But they explain, by then it was "too late" to make a positive impression. In reality, the chances are that intelligent people from all walks of life can understand that it is natural for someone to take some time to open up to someone they meet for the first time, and won't hold you to it. Just think about the people in your life; probably quite a few of them didn't make a great impression on you the first time you met them, and you probably didn't either.
But of course, the authors have built a large consulting business purely focused on training their clients to make good first impressions. You wouldn't expect them to downplay its importance.
Overall, its a recommended read, as long as you keep in mind that first impressions are not a substitute for a lack of other much more important social skills you will need for building meaningful relationships.
Very insightful, however, it requires a lot of effort to actually to act on the advice.......2006-06-07
If most of us are honest, I think it is safe to say that a great deal of personal encounters are shaped by the first impressions you make, regardless of whether this is superficial or not. The problem, however, is that many of us do not know what really drives a good impression because it is a soft topic, which combined with the fact that people rarely tell you what you are doing wrong means that it is difficult to actually change your behaviour. As someone with AD/HD, I am no stranger to poor first impressions, but after reading this book I have definately seen a large improvement in my interactions with people. The authors, in my opinion, do an excellent job of explaining some of the simple and the not so evident things we may overlook when meeting people, which if addressed can improve all of your interactions. In order to get the most value out of the book, readers need to be honest with themselves (and probably take a hit to the ego in the process), understand that is a book aimed at the general public (so you will need to figure out how it applies to your life), and if you already make good first impressions it may not be that useful.
For those looking for a pancea, however, I would caution that applying the principles take a combination of both being honest with yourself on where you can improve, as well as the drive to actually address these areas of development: without these two things the book will not be very useful.
In addition, you have to recognise that the book is generic because of the audience, which means it is no substitute for an actual face-to-face evaluation. As a result, there will be times where the reader must fill in the gaps and see how it applies to him or her. That being said, the authors do a good job of answering the questions many of us have like "what type of body language makes me more approachable?" and "how do I adjust my behaviour to accomodate different types of people".
Finally, if you are someone who already makes great impressions (you can sell ice to an Eskimo), you will probably find that by nature you do many of the things outlined in the book, which means that in many cases it may end up pointing out things you already know.
In summary, given that the book is aimed at wide-audience and dealing with a difficult topic, I give it five stars because it does do an excellent job of balancing psychological facts with real-life examples, and for anyone who makes poor or mildly poor first impressions, applying the concepts can make a huge difference in your life--if you are willing to be honest and put in the effort to change.
