Knitting for the Modern Man or by the Modern Man.......2007-08-23
pretty good intro to knitting book. Difficulty builds with each project. Still there was no project that made me jump up and say, "I have to knit this"
Knitting With Balls.......2007-03-26
This is one fablous book. Quite explanatory. Easy to understand. Make knitting enjoyable, glad to see more men are joing the knitting circles. Seems like more and more men now days are taking up this craft. A lot of men knew how to knit, but kept it hidden. This book brings out the best of everything. Where to find knitting in your area. Knitting guilds for men. Makes every man wish they could do this. Great Thank You.
SIMPLY THE WORST EXCUSE FOR A BOOK I'VE EVER SEEN!.......2007-03-12
This is a horrid example of hype. There is virtually nothing of interest in this book for any knitter unless you've been living under a rock. The patterns are not well written, the designs (and I use the word loosely) are some of the worst presented to date in book form. I've been knitting for over 5 years & designing some of my own garments for quite sometime now & was astonished to see this marketed to the male knitting community. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR-learn from a knitter & forge your own designs thru practice & the love of the craft, not from this over-hyped sorry excuse for a book.
Good, Fun, but needs support.......2007-03-08
Very excited to see this book and hasn't disappointed on that front. The basic directions are good and should help a guy get started and it has very good tips. However, the instructions within the patterns are often confusing, incomplete or containing errors. I would supplement this with Stich n Bitch (I know its a 'girls' book, but great instructions) and make friends with someone at the local yarn store to help you sift through the less than stellar instructions.
Sorry I purchased it :(.......2007-02-17
I'm sorry to say, most of the items in the book are not items I can imagine any man wanting, and therefore I won't be making them. I was quite disappointed. A book with a good array of men's patterns is needed.

Stunning,,,,simply stunning.......2007-05-08
If music could be created with needles and yarn~ (and be able to be seen with the human eye )~then this ,most certainly ,would be what it would look like.
These garments are true works of art.
This book was published in the late 90's ~ but~ what is of particular interest, is that this book is laden with knits that are so jaw droppingly ( I think I unvented a word here) beautiful for TODAY,,,, that I had to sit and absorb them for awhile.
I would leave this lovely hardcover book out my coffee table,, and this is the first knitting book I can honestly say that about with complete truth.
These are what I call" recipe patterns" in the way that the knitter can use the recipe given for their own creations.
In essence, the fiber artist will create the fabric , fit and the design they love.
While there are some specific directions for sizes, the author is very clear at pointing out that any garment can be knit with an infinite number of variables~
She adds a variety of suggestions and truly fosters a feeling of knitting independence. The knitter then feels the freedom to create their own masterpiece,, and savor the process of designing.
The decisions made along the way are part of the process.
There is simply NO way that a knitter can compare works of Meg or her mother ( EZ) to the Step- By- Step Pattern Books of today.
They , along with Barbara Walker and a few select others ,,are in a class of their own.
These people TAUGHT knitting , and are teaching you to think along the way.
I often wonder if this Brand New Generation of knitters will produce one teacher of their caliber.
I hope so.
Even IF you do not knit a single one of the garments in this book, consider purchasing this book for learning tips.
For instance,, I was not sure how to knit backwards,,,,now, I understand the process,,,,,and now I also am learning how to better make a hem on sweater work for me~ vs a simple ribbed bottom~
The list could go on and on.
I can buy basic sweaters from Lands End , but THESE are the sweaters I wish to spend my time creating!
One added note,,,,This book as well as ALL of EZ's books are published in the USA ~ (no offshore printing done)
I absolutely love this book.
Love these patterns!.......2006-04-09
I love knitted garments that draw from the designs of the Turkish, Russian, and Scandanavian cultures. The colors and textures used in this book are timeless. The construction techniques illustrated are indispensible. Needless to say, I am an avid fan of circular knitting and look specifically for books which cover this particular type of knitting whenever and wherever I can. As with any art, it takes time and effort to master technique. And really no one book is the best book for everyone to learn from. That's why it's wonderful that there's a demand for knitters to share their ideas and publish their designs. I applaud Mrs. Swansen for yet another winner. I use her books as a benchmark. If I can master the techniques in her books, I know I'm on the right track.
P.S. A word to the wise...please remember to knit a swatch in the ROUND first before attempting any circular knitting project. Tension is different in the round vs. knitting back and forth on straight needles.
Technique great, patterns repetitive.......2005-09-08
I have to say that I was a little bit disappointed of the patterns. Nothing new, nothing exciting. Sure, the pattern seem to be "authentic", but I can find them in other books as well.
But the "how to" area is very well written and helpful even for an intermediate or advanced knitter.
Unispiring sweaters.......2004-02-09
I've flipped through this book countless times while browsing my local library's knitting section and I'm always turned off by the boring and frequently ugly designs and color schemes. This author apparently has never met an earth tone she didn't like. How about adding a little sparkle to some of those muddier colors with some jewel tones? I can't speak for technique having never used the book. My advise is to browse through it at the library or book store before purchasing it here. Put it this way--it never inspires me enough to check it out of the library---for free! Of course, I'm not a big fan of her mother's book, Knitting Without Tears (I can imagine the gasps of outrage since she seems to be a knitting godess) and wish I'd spent my money on something less boring. I've had Knitting Without Tears for nearly four years now and have yet to use it for anything. It's just wasting space on my shelf. Since this book is a much bigger investment be wise and borrow a copy before buying.
Great book for all knitting knuts!.......2002-04-29
Loved the book - use it with her videos and without -- find it easy to understand compared to most other patterns available today. This book will never leave my library. Her teaching method allows me to design my own patterns without a lot of fuss. Writes in a way that makes me feel like she is sitting in the living room helping out. She simplifies everything she can and makes knitting friendly again. --And that doesnt mean she is making simple sweaters - it just means she is making beautiful sweaters easy to knit. Full price would be a bargain for this book! Happy Knitting!
Book Description
Jo Sharp's innovative creations, sized for men, women, and children, emphasize glorious color and fabulous texture without being trendy. Her fourth book takes its cue from the mystical landscape of Rudgyard Beach (near her home), named for the wife of the English sea captain who established a dairy farm there in the early 20th century. The book includes over 30 classic patterns for a variety of skill levels from an internationally known Australian designer.

Colour Wonderful.......2004-02-27
This is a terrific book with very modern and imaginative patterns. I am an experienced knitter, love fine yarns and textured knitting and this book met all of my needs. What I most liked was the modern stylish garments you can make. Although I have been knitting for over 45 years, my 30 something daughter has just become interested in the medium. We both found projects that were interesting, challenging and that we were both proud to wear. No pattern in the book is this book is "the-same-old-same-old". The use of colour combinations and interesting yarns mixes made each project a joy to the fingers and the mind.
I always enjoy Jo Sharp knitting patterns and this book did not disappoint. Even if you don't knit any of the projects - just looking at the beautiful pictures and dreaming should get your creative juices flowing.
A Colorful Presentation of Knitwear.......2001-02-12
In my opinion, the author has used many colurful combination of yarns within her designs, yet she has implemented common patterns within her designs. This book would be good for a beginning knitter, to help the knitter gain confidence in knitting with different yarn combinations. However, for experienced knitters, especially those knitters who work with fair isle, or searches for many other unique designs, they would find this book a bit boring.

I Kid You Not.......2007-07-31
This was an interesting read. Why spend all sorts of money on yarn when I already have two fuzz producing critters? But then again who wants to wear a hat that smells like dog?
Smell was my biggest worry when I ran across this book. I know only too well how stinky my wet dogs can be, but apparently they say the smell can be washed out quite permanently and easily and then they ask if one has ever smelled a sheep up close. Good point!
With smell issues out of the way, I read on with interest. Instead of throwing away all of that lovely golden fur floating around my home, I might actually be able to use it. Of course this involves quite a bit of work. Daily brushings, the labor intensive washing, washing and washing again of the fuzz (without clogging your drain in the process), then one must card (comb)the fuzz so it all lays the way it should, then you've got to oil it, spin it (an art in itself) and ply it into yarn. Yikes, it looks so easy when laid out in a few pages in a book but it sounds too much like work for someone like me.
After you've done all of the above, if you're one of those inexhaustible types, you can knit hats, scarves and just about anything that you'd knit with wool. The projects seem pretty straightforward but the instructions assume one has some familiarity with knitting. There are scarves, hats, mittens sweaters, even a doggie sweater (the pic shows a pug smugly wearing a sweater made from newfoundland fur, way too cute!). You must know the basic stitches, know all about knitting the round, know how to use your double pointed and circular needles and how to work fair isle/intarsia if you want to finish many of these items. I would've appreciated a little knitting 101 section here (especially for the color work, are you supposed to purl or knit the colors??), but that's just me and I suppose that stuff can easily be found on google but still . . .
The other downside of this book are the black and white photos. The items are described as beautiful tones of "golden retriever fur" or whatever and then they show a grainy b&w photo of a fuzzy looking scarf which was so disappointing. There also are not nearly enough photos showing how to make and use the drop spindle (though the carding section was well illustrated and appears simple enough). I seriously doubt I could learn the art of spinning dog fuzz using only this book and will look for a video if I ever get my fuzzies washed and ready (I think this part intimidates me the most!).
There is a section outlining breeds and their "spinability" for those on the lookout for fuzz machines. Lucky for me, my two goldens are top producers but my lab is a poor choice. Apparently, though, his "short chocolate sprinkles" can be added to all of the glamorously soft golden fur to spice up the color. Who knew?
This was an informative, very niche book, that takes its topic seriously and was a fun read. It's got me looking at the fuzz balls in a new way but I'm not sure if I'll ever work up the energy to collect, wash, card, and then spin this stuff into workable yarn because I'm just too lazy. Though it might make a nice little side business for someone with a lot of time to spare. Imagine a keepsake of your beloved pet like no other. The possibilities are endless . . .
great knitting book for pet lovers.......2006-07-27
finally....a great book for what was once considered annoying pet hair....LOVE IT
Kudos for a resourceful book.......2003-11-30
in this day and age, living in the states, we can be so wasteful. It was refreshing to find a book about recycling, that has nothing to do with paper and plastic. Why didn't anyone think of this before? I'm just really impressed and happy that these books are actually out there. It is important for use to save our resources, before it's too late!
Good Reading.......2001-09-13
I bought this book 2 years ago and it is still good reading. It gives easy-to-follow instructions on how to clean, card, and spin other animal fur as well as doghar.....And it has made me more comfortable to know that there are others who do this and not that I am just spending too much time in the woods (As I have been accused of by neighbors)
How much is that doggy in the window?.......2000-08-17
Golden retriever scarves, Grand Pyranees hats, Siamese socks, and Samoyed sweaters! Kendall Crolius and Anne Montgomery force you not only to examine the logic of what materials to use for knitting, but also offer a new yardstick of the knit value of household pets. I have to admit that if I ever seek another dog, I'm going to be looking at the silky haired retrievers instead of short haired varieties that offer little more than dander and love. No more bulldogs or boxers for me--I want a dog that I can brush, spin, and knit big soft golden retriever sweaters. Truly a breakthrough in pragmatic thought!

Twisted Sisters Works for Guys.......2007-10-03
As a guy I hesitated to buy this book at first because most of the styles are simple shapes designed for women, but as I read further I found so much information I needed to knit sweaters that fit my proportions. As I'm fairly muscular with a slim waist, I have a hard time finding patterns that do me justice. But I wanted to know how to design form fitting knits too. Then someone turned me on to Vogel's Fit Central blog where she goes the extra mile to explain how to design fitted torsos and sleeves. Now all I need is yarn and needles. Thanks Twisted Sisters.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-09-27
Lynne Vogel is an outstanding teacher. Several years ago I came across Lynne's first book, :The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook: Dyeing, Painting, Spinning, Designing, Knitting. I was delighted with the Sock Workbook and it gave me the courage to try my first dying attempt (Kool Aid) and my first knitted socks. Then this summer, I took her workshop in Harrisville, NH. It was five days of new experiences, new skills, and learning new ways to use color in my spinning and my knitting. It was also five days of pure fun, with a delightful group of women. I bought the new sweater book from Lynne, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves to knit. She is an inspiration. Thanks, Lynne. Keep up the good work!
Knitting for big sizes.......2007-09-17
I found nothing that I could knit for slim people who want to show their figure. Nothing ranglan, nothing fitted, all large lumpy knitted clothes for those who want to hide inside. However, good cable instructions for knitting beginners.
Just what I wanted.......2007-09-09
AS a new spinner I am accumulating lots of homespun wool and wanted to know how to adjust patterns to be able to kit it all up. The twisted sisters do just this in this book. There are a number of patterns but the bulk of the book instructs you in how to make a variety of sweaters to perfectly fit anyone you want to kit for with whatever wool you happen to have or have spun.
Boxy fitted knits?.......2007-08-21
I was interested in this book because it talks about working sweaters to your own size. But the sweaters in this book, although beautifully coloured and so on, are all shapeless and boxy. Definitely not my style.

Saw this one, had to have it........2002-05-14
I used to visit New England sheep farms every year on a Wool Day tour that took you from farm to farm in New Hampshire. It was so wonderful. So I had to take a look at Candace Strick's tribute to New England Sheep Farns.
Handdyed country wools are used beautifully in this book to make 26 designs. But WHY I bought this book is due to one sweater alone, an indigo and natural design that has a pattern that combines both an Escher like mosaic with a Japanese or Islamic looking pattern. The patterns uses two variants of one motif, one with an added dark band. The use of two similar small patterns makes an overall larger design that is incredibly pleasing.
There are the usual picture sweaters here. The notes about the farms are fun to read if you love New England (ok, so I am homesick a bit.) All in all, a beautiful book with sweaters that would make elegant gifts.
For those who love to knit:.......2002-02-03
This turned out to be a good purchase on many levels for me. The patterns are presented from easy to experienced, the text gives insight to the lives of the fiberists, and the pictures are very satisfying to puruse. Having just gotten into natural dyes over the past year, I also found some inspiration from some of the fiberists that were showcased in the book.
A fabulous knitting book!!.......2001-07-15
This book is extremely well done; the sweater designs are superb, and there are several interesting techniques included with some of the designs. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I don't usually "read" knitting books, but the author's descriptions of her visits to the various farms are really interesting and fun to read. The accompanying photographs are excellent. I also really appreciated the inclusion of substitute yarn suggestions for those of us who might not have access to the specialty yarns used in the book. This book is a terrific addition to my knitting library, and I hope to purchase more of her books in the future.
For anyone seeking unique and satisfying needlecraft.......2001-02-17
Candace Strick is a talented hand knitter and designer who draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to present twenty-six classically handsome sweater patterns inspired by the unique qualities of the custom-dyed yearns from eight sheep farms across the New England countryside in Sweaters From New England Sheep Farms. Strick clearly explains how commercial yarns may be substituted for hand-dyed and blended yarns, and offers simple, easy-to-follow directions for following each of the patterns. Photos of finished sweater projects and the sheep farms enhanced her "knitter friendly" text. An ideal "how to" guide for beginners and an invaluable source of projects for experienced knitters as well, Sweaters From New England Sheep Farms is a "must" for anyone seeking a unique and satisfying needlecraft project.
A wonderful source book!.......2000-05-28
Great patterns by a master knitter emlivened by the most wonderful wool yarns searched out by the author from New England artisans. A definite must-have book for your knitting library.

Excellent book for beginning spinners and knitters.......2005-03-14
This is a lovely book that belongs in every spinners collections. The photographs are wonderful and the information is presented in a very clear and concise manner.
This book covers the basic information needed to spin a coherent yarn to specifications & produce the sweater shown. The knitting directions are well written. When dyeing was needed to produce a given effect in the article, the directions were also clear and concise.
I bought this book right after I learned to spin. I have made several articles from it, and have used it as source material for some original designs. Now that I teach others to spin, I use this book as a reference material for my students.
Sweaters by hand; designs for spinners and knitters.......2004-02-08
I was impressed with this book for two reasons:
1. It 's about knitting sweaters from handspun yarn, and since I'm learning to spin-I found much inspiration/information on type of fiber and exactly how to spin (in detail)
for each sweater. The instructions were very thorough on how they created their yarns for each and every sweater.
2.The designs were beautiful, interesting without being over
complicated.
It challenged me to take my time with each process of sweater design, paying attention to detail, with the end goal
of creating the perfect sweater with the perfect yarn for that sweater. Each sweater was unique and deserved unique,
individual attention through the whole process from choosing the fiber, to the final knitting of the garment.
I would highly reccamend for a beginning knitter/spinner first sweater book,
or for an advanced knitter who wants a new challenge: learning to spin and work with handspun.

Priceless Pictures.......2000-03-05
What makes this book an invaluable "keeper" for me is the drawings showing knitting operations and an approach to knitting that may be unknown to Western knitters. When I was paid to finish knitting a sweater for a Japanese lady, the pictures in this book saved my life! For example, the ribbing is often done last, knitting down from an invisible cast-on. My customer had already bound off the cuff of the first sleeve -- very flexibly and using a yarn needle! I was able to match her careful work on the second sleeve ribbing by following the pictures in this book. Also, as there are some Japanese characters in the book, it would be helpful for any non-Japanese readers trying to decipher other Japanese knitting material. Aside from the above, the styles are fairly classic and clearly explained in small to average sizes with diagrams and plenty of (English) words.
Ok, not very good.......1999-03-16
It's and Ok book, but I would not suggest it. The patterns are strange and not easy to understand. I did not really like it. Sorry, but that's the truth.
