Kiss My Tiara challenges The Rules and backlash books like In Defense of Modesty. Designed to help women 18-35 catch a life, not a husband, it's funny and politically irreverent, with chapters such as "Nevermind a Penis, We'll Take a Paycheck" and "How to Deal with Lunatics, Perverts and Right-wing Republicans." Like The Rules, it's based on wisdom the author received from her grandmother--except her grandmother was a feisty, gin-drinking feminist. Gilman is indignant at the mindlessness of aerobics classes, refuses to subscribe to the belief that thin thighs are more important than brains and chutzpah, and believes that if you have trouble asking for dessert you'll never be able to ask for a raise. Sprinkled with her grandmother's affirmative aphorisms ("If God didn't want us to play with ourselves, she would have made our arms shorter"), the book covers the gamut of a woman's world--relationships, money, self-esteem, sexual harassment in the workplace, and the guilt of ordering french fries. Gilman's is a sage, insightful, and witty voice in a confusing time that will make women laugh while teaching them to feel entitled, confident, and empowered.
Customer Reviews:
Feminist lit with better shoes.......2007-09-21
Honestly, I feel that if you dislike this book, then you're anti-woman. It's a fantastic, hysterical foray into life as a woman. Every girl should read this book. That's all that needs to be said.
How to stay single and lonely : a guide for the unenlightened.......2007-09-11
Every word this woman writes is just another clarification of her prejudices, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. Her understanding of men is nil, to be expected from someone who seems to have learnt everything she knows about them from books. Truly, few men I know fit into her neat categories. Anyone whose intellect is low enough to gain something from this drivel deserves to be misled away on the path to unhappiness. The tragedy is that many young women fall for this garbage, only to reject it too late when they're a single thirty-something, flocking desperately around men at discos in the hope of getting what they tried to reject for so long. Once they've given this up, they'll spend the rest of their lives whining about how there are no good men anymore. A wake-up call for you, Gilman. Spiritual growth is no respecter of the hypocrisy of your brand of feminism, and all who take this bilge seriously are merely stunting their own spiritual evolution, as well as guaranteeing their future unhappiness.
Much love for The SmartMouthed Goddess from The ArtSlut.......2007-07-29
Hot stuff, Mama! Tell it like it is & live it like you mean it. Say it loud & proud! The ArtSlut loves the SmartMouth.
Every woman should read this book.......2007-07-23
Sensible and insightful....totally cuts through the silliness and stupidity attendant upon being a woman in the USA today.
This will book change the way you think forever.......2007-06-15
This book was not what I expected. Im 20 years old and I loved it. I recommend it to any girl/woman that wants to see things from a really different prospective. It will make you laugh and educate you at the same time. Trust me this book is good from beggining to end. I loved it. Talks about everything us girls go through. From work, to dating, to dealing with relatives, to beauty and health, and all about standing up for yourself.

Book Description
The tiara has played a glittering role in the lives of the elegant and extravagant—from the doe-eyed Audrey Hepburn in the film classic Roman Holiday to generations of England's royal familyrepresenting the height of sophisticated glamour. Worn for centuries by nobility and high society, tiaras are enjoying renewed popularity among today's movie stars and modern brides. Created in conjunction with an exhibition of tiaras at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this magnificent volume showcases more than 75 of the world's most exquisite tiaras adorned with everything from delicate feathers to ornately decorated, gold fleur-di-lis scrollwork set in diamonds, pearls, and sapphires. An essay by Diana Scarisbrick, curator of the exhibition, traces the tiara's history, and dozens of photographs show tiaras worn by Russian princesses, British royalty, American socialites, and many others. Taking a lighter, popular culture approach to a traditionally high fashion subject, Tiara will delight aficionados as well as those less familiar with the tiara's artistry, who will be astonished by the array of styles, shapes, and showstoppers from around the world.

Another Scarisbrick examination of gorgeous jewels.......2002-08-20
As I am a big fan of Diana Scarisbrick's "Ancestral Jewels," I was excited to see "Tiara." Although she does a masterful job giving the reader a miniature history of the tiara (especially in its different European forms), I must admit to disappointment at the layout of the book. Dozens upon dozens of photographs of women wearing their tiaras are literally about 1" square (sometimes less, sometimes ever so slightly more). There is so much white space surrounding these photographs that I have to wonder if perhaps there was a misunderstanding among author, editor, and designer.
The latter half of the book fares better, with full-page color photographs of sumptuous tiaras. Scarisbrick shows us mourning tiaras (often constructed of iron, though just as lacy and lovely as their platinum and gold counterparts), brushed gold tiaras, and tairas which break down into sundry bracelets, necklaces, brooches, and stomachers. It's especially fun to see the different tiaras worn for the coronations of King George of England in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth of England in 1953. There is even a photo of Rose Kennedy, whose husband Joe was America's Ambassador to England in the years leading up to World War II. Mrs. Kennedy is pictured in a satin evening gown, wearing a tiara borrowed from a sympathetic English noble friend. An excerpt from her 1974 autobiography notes that when she wore the tiara to court " . . . my children were quite impressed!" One can only imagine.
The range and artistry of the designs is really quite breathtaking. It's just too bad that more care wasn't taken to enlarge the photographs of the women wearing their tiaras, as there's so much interesting interplay of fashion and tradition there.
A Poorly designed book..........2002-06-03
In the first 50 pages of this book and then periodically throughout its remaining pages, the photos of the women wearing these tiaras are about the size of a postage stamp, surrounded by large blank white areas. Talk about eye strain... A waste of paper and space. Later in the book some of the tiaras have their descriptions on the page opposite their photos, again, with a large area of white space surrounding the text. All this empty white space could have been used for LARGER PHOTOS. Some other descriptions for 4 consecutive tiaras are on the pages following the photos. Very unorganized, and poorly planned. It would have been SO much better to be able to see how these creations looked on people. Many of the larger photos of the tiaras are lovely, however, a number of them look like a "cut and paste job". Nice to see the jewels, however I think this book is just so-so.
A magnificent publication........2002-01-07
This is a most attractive volume sumptuously illustrated and beautifully laid out. The text is considered and informative. The printing and general feel of the book is in keeping with it's noble subject and would be a first class addition to the coffee table of any true lover of beautiful things. I can only await the author's next project with baited breath.
This book could have been easily so much better.......2001-10-22
Tiara's are facinating pieces of jewellery. They sit on the head like a halo and bring to life the myths of royalty, aristocracy and an apparent lifestyle of unlimited money.
This book presents a stunning array of Tiara's with many photos that you would be hard pressed to find in any other book.
Having said that, it is the photos which let this book down, not the text which is very interesting in it's self. Each Tiara is photographed in colour, but they appear to have been cut out from their photographed background and superimposed on the book's creme page background. This gives the Tiara's a feeling of slight unreality and flattens them out taking away their 3D reality.
There is also a facinating array of photos of people actually wearing these Tiaras, and it would be worth buying the book for that alone, except the majority of these pictures are produced at thumbnail size or stamp and you need a magnifiying glass to see them well. A shame as it wastes amazing photo research, and does not enable me to see well photos I otherwise would have been astonished to see.
Having said all this, if you have any interest in Tiara's or jewellery history this book is a must, but beware of it's shortcomings. An exhibition cataloge it must have been stunning to see this array "in the flesh".
GOT A MAGNIFYING GLASS?.......2001-01-26
I love the larger photos in this book but the small ones are the size of a postage stamp. They are interesting old prints and photos but it hurts my eyes to study more than a few at a time. The book is wonderful and worth the price, well researched and keeps your interest.

two for two with the little ones.......2007-06-07
Tried it twice with young, self-described "princesses" (and we can go on all afternoon about that one), but the gift has been a hit both times. Now what is it with this whole princess thing?
Perfect for twin 5-year-olds!.......2007-03-26
My girls enjoyed making the tiaras, and best of all, it is an activity they can do on their own.
They love making small ones for their dolls and stuffed animals, though getting those to stay on is a challenge! As others have mentioned, it would be nice if more tiaras were included in the package. Great rainy-day activity.
KIds Loved it.......2007-01-09
My wife told me to order I did the wife and the grands loved it and had a great time together
Great gift, tons of fun.......2006-11-23
My daughter just got this for her 4th birthday, and it was the hit present of the bunch. Decorating crowns was the activity of choice for a week of evenings around here, and she insisited that we make one for Mommy & Daddy too (there are three shiny cardboard tiaras in the kit, and they velcro on, so they fit anyone). The kit comes with stick-on and glue-on shiny jewels & things, plus a glue-pen. I recommend gluing everything because the stick-on jewels kept falling off when she wore them in the next couple of days.
The only thing is that when it's over, it's over, since there are only three. We have the crowns around for dress-up, they get put on occasionally, but the real fun was of course in making them. (There are little tie-on "doll tiaras" too, but she hasn't gotten into those.) That said, it was still a great gift, and I'd definitely get it for other kids.
Finally, Kits For Mini-Klutzes!.......2005-06-29
I've purchased four titles in the Chicken Socks series so far, including the Tiaras book/kit, and recommend them all very highly. I keep them hidden away, and then tuck one into my purse when I'm headed out someplace where my small daughter will have to wait quietly---i.e., restaurants, doctor's waiting rooms, etc.
The projects and supplies are designed with small, less dextrous hands in mind, all supplies are contained in resealable packages (great for portability), and they never fail to keep my daughter happily occupied for half an hour or so. Even the 'Melty Beads' kit can be taken for play away from home, because although I can't fuse the beads together with an iron while we're out, my daughter is happy to keep re-using the beads over and over to make different designs.

Book Description
Any woman who's ever wanted to be queen for a day understands the appeal of that most magnificently impractical of accessories, the tiara. Once an aristocratic status symbol, more recently seen mainly in the bridal trousseau, the tiara today is enjoying a tongue-in-cheek style revival. In this gem of a book, Geoffrey Munn, jeweler by appointment to the British monarchy, presents both classic and contemporary interpretations of diadems and headdresses spanning two centuries. The featured designers include Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef, and Versace. From priceless pieces commissioned by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria to a punk-rock acrylic creation by Vivienne Westwood, the sumptuous photos and accompanying histories are sure to thrill royal watchers and riot grrls alike. Tiaras: Past & Present is published to accompany an exhibition, curated by the author, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Customer Reviews:
Tiaras - always in good taste.... .......2007-05-13
Excellent adventure into an art form using precious metals and jewels to make the perfect man made crowning glory. The text and photos bring a historical context to enjoy the art and creativity this subject requires. The gems , the glitter and imagined glamour make this book a must have along with Geoffrey Munn's definative text published earlier "Tiara's : A History of Splendour" .
Beautiful.......2006-01-18
I was lucky enough to SEE the exhibition at Vic and Albert in London and that is where I got this book. Tiaras were absolutely fabulous and the book transportes the magic and splendor very well. I gave this book to a friend who owns antique jewellery shop and am thinking about getting another copy for myself.
WOW!.......2005-08-12
Wow! I just got this book, and G.Mann's huge other tiara book. This one is based on the exhibit that was done at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and contains not only old tiaras, but modern ones done just for the exhibit. There is very little overlap between the two books, so I was not disappointed. The photos are huge, clear, and show lots of detail. There's also lots of good information. The other, bigger book is a better deal at $47, but this one's no slouch either, and the price and size would make it a great gift.
[...]
Best of Past & Present.......2004-02-13
I recived this book as a gift. It was one of two books on tiaras by G.C. Munn, this book gives you a look at what kind of Tiaras are being made and worn by todays Women. The Photos are of good quality and sharpness You can see the Craftmanship in each piece.
If you ever wanted to have your own Tiara this is the closest thing to it.
Absolutely fabulous!.......2003-06-21
So wonderful I had to buy copies for all my women freinds- and we can't shut up about it still. This is a nice overview of the tiara's form and history, and while it doesn't cover the serious art history that Munn's other big fat tiara book does, it's mighty pretty to look at. And it'll make girl a lot pickier about the rhinestone crowns she buys to go to dance clubs! I recommend this, and then buy yourself a few tiaras to wear with your jammies- every girl needs one or two ;-) .

Book Description
A sumptuous selection of jewelry made to adorn the head - tiaras, aigrettes and bandeaux. Emblems of success and happiness, tiaras are some of the most beautifully crafted jewelry pieces of the past two centuries. The House of Chaumet has continuously excelled in this art, from the papal tiara offered by Napoleon to Pius VII, to the hundreds of hair adornments created over the last decades, always reflecting the period's most formidable fashions and decorative arts. An exquisite selection from unknown Chaumet archives representing the most aesthetic portraits of head jewelry, the book is an inspiring look at Chaumet's wondrous adornments. The author traces the evolution of these jewels from the 18th century to present, featuring the outstanding personalities for whom they were made and the great events at which they were worn.

Timeless Tiara Pictures.......2005-02-22
Let us be clear- this is a picture book. Beautiful pictures but just pictures. This book contains very little text. If you like detailed photo captions or historical background information you will be disappointed with this book. But for a photo overview of the wide variety of styles and designs in headgear this is a great resource.
tiaras galore.......2003-09-05
This is a wonderful to drool over the fabulous tiaras that were made over the course of the 19th and early 20th century. The only drawback is the lack of text explaining more about the tiaras themselves. It's a wonderful book, but if you can only buy one, get the tiara books by Geoffrey Munn!
