Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Absolutely Fantastic! .......2007-03-18

I am a traditional dance dress artist, although not as prolific (or even as expert) as some of those featured in this book. If I could have given more than 5 stars it would receive them. The photos were beautifully clear, although there only one or two photos of some of the featured dresses, they showed the splendor and detail of artistry from the past. I hope this doesn't spawn more artifakes, especially those coming to the US from overseas. This book is a long-awaited dream come true.

Worth the read.......2006-05-08

I enjoyed this book. I only give it three stars because it did get a bit redundant towards the end, thus boring me a bit, but it's an excellent read for anyone who has suffered through the trials of being trapped in mental health "treatment."

I also felt that somewhere along the course of the book, the author lost her passion for telling the story. The descriptions became vague, there wasn't as much life breathed into the storytelling.

HOWEVER, Daphne has all of my respect. She seems to have come out of this ordeal intact. She is accepting of who she is and doesn't seem to hold hatred or ill will for those who have harmed her. I never felt heat from her words-- she simply told it how it was. I salute her.

First Hand.......2005-04-11

it disturbs me when people read memoirs, especially those geared at or focused in psychology, and take it upon themselves to diagnose the writer. that is not dylan's(daphne's) intent (dylan is fTm and is currently living in washington dc). this is a memoir, most importantly...a first-hand creatively written perspective and critique.

having met and visited with dylan at his studio in washington dc, i know that the reality of a tormented past is ever-present. his art reflects this. not only does dylan wrestle with demons of his past, he still must fight against the close-minded bigotry that some people have portrayed in these reviews. my understanding of psychology has always been that of a people-science...a science committed to helping people live good lives. it is not a science of manipulation and judgments, such as the reality that dylan had to face.

my only hope is that you read this book and realize that it is neither fact nor fiction, but one person's perspective on his reality. we cannot fault him for that...only applaud him for sharing his voice.

Memoir of Denial.......2004-12-31

Scholinski attempts to attack the mental health field in her memoir "The Last Time I Wore a Dress." She asserts that she was held through her teenage years because she was not feminine enough in the eyes of idiot doctors. However, I found little evidence of her tomboy nature contributing to her hospitalization. Scholinski never considers the consequences of her actions, she is dishonest, histrionic, and self-absorbed. It is a lack of maturity, not femininity that causes Scholinski's downfall. Amazingly, Scholinski never sees her actions as having anything to do with the state of her existence. This short, simple, and repetitive novel is a memoir of denial.

Transcending A Living Nightmare.......2004-10-13

Having come from an abusive home, I can relate to what Daphne/Dylan must have felt and how he behaved while trying to cope with his Gender-Identity and the far-from-sympathetic world around him in the 1980's. I came out as gay in 1970 and then as Transgendered in 1993, after having wrestled with "my self-knowledge - vs - what other people tried to make me act like" for MANY years prior -- it was a rocky hellish road at times, but (despite the abuse!) my parents accepted me (grudgingly at times) for who/what I was. I have nothing but kind words for those Tansgendered friends of mine, who like Dylan, persevered through their own private torment, and who accepted me for who I was and for how I identified myself.

I applaud Dylan for having the inner strength to keep going - keep going, no matter the present torment, no matter how horrible the present situation is - keep going forward with your own goal in mind, no matter how clear-cut or nebulous it is. This book has and will inspire others out there who "think they are the only ones" going through this.

We may have come far but in too many parts of this country, children and young adults -- who are trying to reconcile their birth gender with their personal gender identity -- are still being put thru a living nightmare; parents abusing, insulting dismissing them from their households, with no nurturance, no desire to understand their own offspring; even their classmates, teachers, strangers, even friends turning against them. It takes HUGE inner strength to rise above all that and to keep going, keep going forward.

This book will shock, inspire and galvanize. I hope it also EDUCATES those who harbor any prejudices against transgendered individuals, ESPECIALLY those who treat patients with Gender Identity "Disorder".. Since the beginning of time,the spectrum of Masculine and Feminine has run through ALL genders in varying degrees, and not necessarily always corresponding to the individual's birth gender.

In today's civilized and educated society, it is abut time that young people like Dylan are raised with compassion and understanding instead of with psychodramatic brutality. It is my hope that this book also reaches out to those in Child Protective Services as well as those professionals in the fields of Therapy.

After having read the spotlight reviews of this book, it appears to be necessary to say something in defense of the mental health profession, of which I am not a member.

The fact is, the mental health community and society as a whole have come a long way since 1983 in regards to this area. More than any other segment of the population, I am sure, the social work and psychotherapeutic communities have an informed understanding and humane sympathy for those with transgender issues. In 1983 it was Daphne who was the monster; today, in the eyes of educated people everywhere, it was her treatment that was the monster.

Which is not to say that her book isn't still relevant. There is certainly a vast, vast way to go. Today, an adolescent would at least be able to consider coming forth with their transgender issues; in the 60s and 70s it was unthinkable.

But adolescence is still too late. Humane treatment of those who would have deviation from gender norms would begin at the very earliest time of life. All little girls of preschool age should have the opportunity to be introduced to the kinds of play more typical of boys, and all little boys should have one dress among their available clothes, which they should be presented without prejudice as an option for make-believe or play.

Shallow.......2007-01-02

I have had this book for several years. As I've aged and matured, I have given it another go and I still find it to be most unhelpful. They talk a good talk, but they leave out, in a most egregious way, how to walk the walk. This book doesn't help you. This book is like a candy bar when you are hungry. I think Brenda Kinsel's books are good, and so is "Clothes Minded" by Andrea L. Siegel. They help you figure out specific elements. This book, is disappointing in that maybe they felt they should write a book, but kind of missed the margin of how to relate to the rest of us by miles. Based on the book, I actually hired them as consultants, they surprised me by suggesting that everything I purchase come from a sale rack. In the book, they say that its worth it to spend money on key pieces that you love, yet in person, they practice the opposite of this advice. I really do not recommend this approach. Brenda Kinsel and others are much much much better for helping you, discover you.

emphasis on individualtiy.......2005-11-27

I read this book a few years ago, and while I did not do all the excercises (in fact, I can't remember if I did any), I loved the book and the concept that it is more important to know who you are and what image you want to give off than to know the "right" things to wear. I enjoyed the personal stories of the people who shared their journeys into the shark infested waters of style. This book gave me confidence that I would know what was right for me when I found it. I read a lot of books at that time about body types and color charts, etc, but this is the one that made the biggest impression. You won't find any cookie cutter advice or rules to cramp your style in here!

A superb image guide to DISCOVERING your style. Not "copying" it........2005-10-14

This is an extraordinary book. Having read many books on style, this is the first one to assert that style is something that must be discovered and developed - not envied and copied. The book requires a fair amount of reflection and written work, and those looking for "quick tips" (like the reader who complains the book won't help a stay-at-home mom choose a "power suit" for a school board meeting) are unlikely to find the easy answers they seek. But really, aren't there enough style books like that already? And isn't it true that we picked up a new style book because those kind are just so limited and formulaic?

I am disheartened by some of the reviews for this book. The same reader above is full of excuses as to why fashion just won't work for her - having an "image" is for artists, for entrepreneurs. Not for mere employees who risk the wrath of a pink slip for wearing a new belt. How ridiculous. I'm a doctor - there are few professions as conservative as that. There is no job I can think of in which expressing your creativity to some degree is a bad thing. We all have "limits" placed on how we dress; nowhere in the book is there a recommendation to fly in the face of common sense and decorum.

The same reader takes offense to the authors' assertion that elastic waistbands, oversized pockets and patch pockets are unfashionable. Well, they ARE unfashionable. But, the reader laments that they are comfortable, useful. Maybe. But fashionable? That's why the book isn't called Ten Steps to Comfort Freedom. This reader assumes that the authors don't know what it is to really "work" (presumably like she does). And she laments that style may take time - even ironing! - "and who has the time for that these days?" she asks. I guess the answer to that would be: someone willing to put aside a bit of time because they think their appearance matters. This reviewer has already decided that she can make no wardrobe or image changes because of the extreme physical demands of her job, the dictatorial condemnation of her bosses, and a belief in comfort and convenience at all cost. What this reader needs is not a new style. She needs a new life!

Another reader claims that the authors "insist" on shopping at high-end stores. That just isn't true. However, there's few of us that won't admit we wish we'd saved for a really good pair of shoes, rather than the four cheap and trendy pairs we now never wear. I have used this book to transform my way of dressing and shopping - I still shop at Walmart; I just shop there smarter now. This book isn't for everyone; if you're looking for pictures, be advised that there isn't a one. But if you're looking for photos of fashion, buy a magazine. Rest assured, if you're motivated and willing to do the work, you WILL find your unique personal style - and that has nothing to do with whether you shop at Walmart or Rodeo Drive.

For Artists and Entrepreneurs....everyone else, not so great........2005-07-18

If you take the time to work through the exercises, this book would probably be very helpful to people who are trying to make a name for themselves as an artist of any sort, or to any entrepreneurs who feel their clothing can help them stand out in a good way from all the other people in their type of work--in either case, YOU will be setting the boundaries as to what is acceptable clothing to wear, and will get the most out of this book, as it is a relatively thorough way to get the benefit of an image consultant without actually hiring one. However, it will *not* help you if you are say, a stay-at-home-parent wishing to quickly learn how to "power dress" for a school board meeting.

For people who are employees, which are most of us, you may or may not be allowed to express your creativity, because your idea of style might not send the right message to the company's target audience. Think Danny on last season's The Apprentice--his attire is very common and accepted in his field, but doesn't work everywhere else. The key here is that as long as you are working for someone else, you *will* have limits placed on how you can dress, either personally by your employer, by your field, unless you are so successful and in demand that you can do as you wish, and to heck with everyone else.

I felt this book, besides being geared toward the British, who tend to be more formal anyway, was also geared toward the east coast of the US. There was no discussion of regional clothing/style preferences--I didn't expect talk of Texas Big Hair, etc., mind you, but you're wearing completely different clothes and footwear in say, the Pacific Northwest, where it rains or is threatening to rain most of the year, and sidewalks are not as prevalent.

And I found their discussion of what constituted "extraneous additions", to be irritating. Many people happen to LIKE elastic in a waistband, provided you can easily replace it when necessary, or the little cinch straps in a waistband even though you still have beltloops--not everybody likes to wear belts. The authors don't like leather patches on sweaters--well, they can no doubt afford to trash an otherwise still-in-excellent-condition sweater with holes in the elbows--most people can't. Oversize pockets are another no-no to them. Sorry, many of us prefer useful pockets to dragging around purses.

I got the distinct impression that neither of them have ever actually *worked* in the clothing they wear, sell and recommend, if you know what I mean. However, many of us DO have to perform physical work in our clothes, so practicality does figure into our clothing buying decisions. Most, if not all of what they discuss requires drycleaning, handwashing, or at least ironing, and who has the time or money for that these days, especially when in most cases you are not provided a clothing allowance for your job?

But the last straw for me was in "Session 4: Your Inner Style Inventory" when they described a visit from Emma Thompson, in very casual wear, to their store. Not only did they praise her manners to the skies, they went on to say that inner style will go beyond clothes you wear, or words to that effect. Well gee, is that so, and if so, what then IS the point of this book? But it gets worse. Further on in the chapter, they then describe meeting with some executive (very well-dressed), in Los Angeles. Later, they meet him again in Beverly Hills and he's gone all Casual Friday on them (oh, the pain, the pain!), so now they've lost all respect for him. Again, do clothes matter or not? Two conflicting views, and in the same chapter, no less. If it were MY company, yes I would expect to be able to wear what I wanted and to put my feet on the desk whenever I wished, without caring about what someone I was in a position to hire was thinking.

They then go on to bemoan the fact that some companies now seem to be in Casual mode Monday-Friday. You could almost hear the whine of "Waaah, we're losing potential business left and right, waaah!" Maybe that's why this book is out, and why they teach/taught through The Learning Annex, because people have come to their senses and don't require or desire this type of service for the exhorbitant money they charge.

Bottom line, this book is an interesting and useful read for a very limited audience, or a great read if you're just interested in an explanation of how this sort of thing is done (try to borrow from the library first, before buying, as I did). I bought it used through Amazon. If you need something to help you get put together fast, for women I recommend "Does this Make Me Look Fat?" and "The Lucky Shopping Manual". For guys, I can't think of any books because they can just go into any quality store (e.g. Mens Wearhouse) and come out looking great because the tailoring is figured into the price of the suit.

Rate my new look!.......2007-08-08

Alright everyone, Patriarch here!!! Yeah so I am in an awesome mood because yours truly has read this book and has come up with an AWESOME new look that is going to portray his extreme personality. This book had a lot to teach yours truly. When I used to see people with lots of piercings and tattoos and black silly clothes I just used to laugh and laugh. But, as you know, I am always reading and learning about different people and different ways of life.

I saw this book and figured this book would be funny and give me a new insight on just how sad these people are. Well, this book turned my world upside down because, as it turns out yours truly has a lot in common about these people! I have an extreme personality but nobody knows it because I wear normal clothes and have no tattoos or piercings. Well, my my friends that is going to change...or is it?

As soon as I presented this idea to my friends and family they immediately shot it down. They made me feel really stupid. This is because they aren't extreme. I need to present my idea to extreme people and let them decide. So I will now explain to you my new look.

1.Blue mohawk. Not that wimpy mowhawk that's become mainstream. I mean an extreme mohawk. Very thin and very long and spikey. About a foot long. The rest will be shaved to the scalp.

2.Rat tail with toy babies on it. I got this idea from Johnny Slash from Square Pegs. I will grow a long rattail and stick plastic toy babies on it.

3. Talking skull tattoo. You've seen people with a skull tattoo before but have you ever seen one with a talking skull tattoo? Nope. I will be the first. It will be this HUGE skull with its mouth open and a speech bubble that says something like, "How ya doin?" Something nice.

4.. Multiple piercings. I will have three eyebrow rings. One of those earrings that go through the nose-bone. Two nipple rings that will have chains attached to the nose ring.

5.Military vest.

6.See through yellow pants.

This will be my new look and before I do it I gotta get some feedback from some of my fellow Extreme personalities. So, if you like my new look click, this review was helpful. Intelligent approach.......2006-02-12

The first chapter may seem bland, but they are well written and very intelligent. The explaination of subculture vs. lifestyle or tribal is informative and supported quite well. Well researched and impressive book. But keep in mind this data is taken from Goths from England, not the US, so some might not be able to follow in the interveiws.

For academics only.......2005-11-23

The book is the color black, it has "goth" in its title, and on the cover one is greeted by two goths with heavy make-up; a woman wearing black fetish wear and a man with a white face, black lipstick, see-through kinky shirt, and large hair reminiscent of Robert Smith of The Cure.

But looks can be deceiving. Goth: Identity, Style, and Subculture is a scholarly book, written by an academic in a academically correct language, put together for an academic audience. It's a book that's difficult to read, filled to the brim with references and footnotes referring to earlier works in sociology, anthropology, and ethnography. In other words, anyone attempting to read all of the 198 pages while not having the required skills is in for a real challenge. However, it can be a challenge worth taking.

Hodkinson, who is both a goth and an academic, has written a book where he analyses the British alternative scene known as Goth during the latter half of the 1990s. Whatever music, fashion, thoughts, ideas, life styles, and more that can be classified as parts of the "gothic subculture" are thoroughly and subjectively analyzed by him. What early bands are seen as founders of gothic music? How are you "supposed" to dress if you want to be part of it all? What clubs and social events are there to be found, and how do you walk and talk the right way once you're there? What in the world are the pros and cons of taking part of a subculture where the great majority dress in black, has a fascination with death and the darker sides of life, spend hours every day putting on make-up, dress in bizarre fetish clothing, while all the time having to endure being harassed by the "normal" people?

This, and more, is dealt with by Hodkinson, but Goth is still not a "manual" of how to become gothic. It's a scholarly book, no doubt about that, even though bands such as Cure, Bauhaus, and Sisters of Mercy are mentioned and different gothic fashion is shown (in low quality black and white photographs). If one's interested in this particular subculture, or indeed happens to already be a goth, then Goth is a definite must, but one must also be aware of the fact that large parts of the books are made up of difficult texts where lots of sociological phenomena and theory are discussed. In case you've never taken a class in sociology, well, then this book might not be the right choice for you.

People with more of a casual interest in the gothic way of life should try to find other, more easily understood books. Still, Goth is not a bad book, provided that you're able to understand it.

good scholarly research, but a bit dry.......2005-08-19

I see that this book was unfairly trashed by a few reviewers, and I thought I should offer a review. I once used it for a sociology project in college, as I couldn't simply plead extensive familairity with the subject and life experience without any academic sources, and to be honest I was delighted to finally see a study on the subject.
First off, this book investigates how Goth culture works from the standpoint of sociology, and uses all its methods. If you are interested in sociology, it is an interesting book, and one that delves into some very intrigiung points about the inner workings of Goth culture. However, this meticulously researched and solidly argued book has one major flaw: it is indeed dry reading. For that reason, it is best for academic uses. If you want to know about Goth culture in general there are other books on the subject now-I'd highly recommend "Goth Chic: A Connoiseur's Guide to Dark Culture" by Gavin Baddely and perhaps also "What is Goth?" by Voltaire-but only if you can take that one with the proper grain of salt.
Neither of those books has any color plates either, and for good reason. Color plates are quite expensive and most non coffee table books have few or none for good reason, given the realities of the publishing industry!
I do agree with the complaint about the cover picture-I wish they had used a different picture-but you know what they say about not judging a book by its cover.It's also true that authors are often not given much say about the cover art of their books. As a further note of the scholarly nature of this book, I'll add that there are not all that many pictures in it anyway-it is mostly text. So, the bottom line: as a scholarly work it is greatly recommended, but for general reading it is rather dry.

I know the author.......2004-08-10

I haven't read this book but I know the author and his work. I attended a conference that Paul organized. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met in academia. He is also amazingly Goth. He is tall, thin, pale has long jet black hair and an enormous lip piercing. He wears "respectable" clothing on campus but every bit of it is black or dark grey. Anyway, as dark as he is still a working scholar writing as a working scholar primarily for other working scholars. So reality check people. This is an ACADEMIC BOOK. Don't expect it to be a how to be a Goth book, or a book exponding some particular Gothic style over any other, or a Goth expose. If that's what you want buy another book! I am giving it five stars because I know both his theory and methodology and they are first rate.

The Gold-Threaded Dress tells the story of Oy, a little Thai girl who has started at a new school in America. Oy faces many difficulties trying to fit in at school. To begin with, her teacher calls her Olivia, her American name, instead of Oy. In addition, a boy in her class, Frankie, keeps saying that she is Chinese and the many Mexican-American students at the school begin to call her Chinita (Spanish for little Chinese). The situation becomes worse when Liliandra, the most popular girl in class, sees a picture of Oy in a beautiful Thai dress and offers her membership into her exclusive club if she brings the dress to school for her to try on.

This book is appropriate for ages 8 and 9. Children in this age range will be able to relate to the issues the book deals with, such as peer pressure and wanting to fit in. They are also beginning to develop empathy for others, and will show concern for Oy's feelings. I would use this book as a read-aloud in a school setting as part of a discussion about cultural awareness and appreciating differences. I would also recommend this book for pleasure reading.

Good Book, A Rare One About A Thai Girl.......2005-04-14

I liked the book but was bothered by some inaccuracies such as misreading the Thai words and letters. Carolyn Marsden should have known what was written in Thai better. It's not too far off, but enough to indicate ignorance of the Thai language, which she tries to share. It's obvious she asked people to write the words and wasn't able to check for accuracy. Khun Mere is the girl's mother, better pronounced as Maa (like a in apple), and Sawadee is never used without Ka for girls or Krop for boys after it, it's very rude to use that word alone. These inaccuracies hurt the book in my eyes and I think better attention to Thailand would have erased the mistakes.

dress.......2004-12-31

Oy is trying to fit in. One day, a picture of her in a special dress is seen by the other girls. She is invited to be in the "it" crowd only if she brings the dress for them to try on. This story is a charming story of a child reconciling her Thai heritage and being an American. It is predictable, but it is unique in that the other children are identified as having immigrant heritage as much as the main character, which seems to have the accuracy of Southern Californian situations. It is a brief glimpse into the Thai American experience. Children will find it easy to read. It offers an American perspective that is not often viewed.

What a delight........2004-12-28

Marsden's The Gold-Threaded Dress was a pleasant story. It was short, but entertaining. I loved reading about Oy and her family and culture. Since reading this story with my ten year old, I have found an interest in going to Thai grocery stores near where I live. My daughter has shown a great interest in learning as much about Thai culture as well.

From Candlewick Press comes this engaging, easy-to-read story of fourth grader Oy, a Thai-American student new to a predominantly Mexican-American school, who struggles to fit in with the popular clique. The understated yet poignant description of the girls tearing apart Oy's precious family heirloom was especially moving. Readers will sympathize with Oy's desire to find a friend and enjoy the glimpses of wry humor, which is especially prized in Thai culture. The book weaves in other lovely details about Thai traditions like dance, cuisine, and cultural gatherings.

Oy's benevolent, wise parents calmly guide her through the dilemma and act as her advocates in the school. This doesn't always happen in immigrant families, especially when a principal's public reprimand is seen as bringing shame on the whole family. My parents, for example, would have hit the roof! However, Oy's unquestioning devotion to her parents is common among pre-adolescent immigrants, and the cool-headedness, or "jai-yen," of her parents is certainly a prized Thai trait. (My fourth-grade son, who loved living in Thailand, devoured this book in one day, even taking it to school in spite of the 'girly' cover).

I should of paid more attention to the other reviews of this book before making my buying decision. My copy as well ended up in the garbage, where it belongs. Not only is the author inaccurate, most of the chapters are redundant; cut and paste statements. The individual that wrote this book should consider a new profession, and stop writing books. Needless to say, it deserves less than a 1 star. I am so mad at myself for wasting my time and money on this piece of garbage.

Lacking depth.......2002-03-05

I am a firm believer in ongoing personal development, so I have continued to read and grow my perspective. Your Executive Image looked interesting because of attention given to clothing, space, gestures, etc...

Then I read it. Not all of it, but as much as I could before I realized this was a waste of time. For instance, the entire posture chapter could have been replaced with a single line: Posture is important as it conveys confidence or insecurity... The rest of the chapter reinforced this one point. Twenty minutes of time for a thirty-second concept. In some chapters, I didn't even see a worthwhile thirty-second concept (like the chapter on space).

Money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Excellent Use Of Time.......2001-07-21

This book continues all the sound advice I have received from my parents while I was growing up. The material contained in this book is an excellent reference for any person at any level of employment. I have been able to easily relate parts of the book to past experiences.

Getting To The Top.......2001-07-20

If a business minded individual wants to successfully make it to the top of the corporate ladder, then this book is a must. The author explains in great detail exactly what it takes to achieve "Your Executive Image." To keep and maintain employment the right image is a must and the author takes you there and keeps you there. I give this book as a gift to all of my friends.
