Hanky-Panky Crazy Quilts.......2007-04-07
Lots of inspirational pieces are displayed in color with ideas to make it your own masterpiece.
Not a quilt.......2005-02-23
I was disappointed in this book. These are not quilts, but wall hangings, so to me the title is misleading. I also thought the book was too theme oriented with regard to the quilted wall hangings. I inherited alot of handkerchiefs and wanted to make a large quilt.
Hankys galore!.......2004-03-12
This is a great book for quilting and especially for a type of quilting that is not as popular as piecing and applique. I saw the author, Cindy Brick, on HGTV's Simply Quilts! with the ever sparkling Alex Anderson. Cindy showed how to make the cutest crazy hanky quilt so I just had to try it, even though I had recorded the show. I love to buy books on whatever hobby I have (knitting, crochetting, and quilting), and just good-old fiction. This is a great book. I'm sorry to say that I don't have any ancestors that had or saved handerchiefs, but had the thought to look on e-Bay! What do you know?!? There are pages and pages of handkerchiefs for sale of all types and all price ranges, mostly reasonable. This made this book invaluable to me. Hope that the previous reviewer sees this and therefore can get herself more handkerchiefs. There are plenty for all and Cindy Brick probably has some ideas on finding them also. But as she says on the show, "Just don't cut up the valuable historical ones." Great book and author.
Huet-chooo....Bless you!.......2004-02-11
I received this as a gift and would probably not have purchased it on my own (only because I don't have any hankies). The book had a lot of colored pictures and all of the quilts had themes which were based on what was embroidered on the hankies. It is a good book to have for some who has a lot of hankies and would like to turn them into wall hangings to remember beloved ones. Overall it is well written and makes a nice addition to my library.

My son really likes these........2007-02-10
I only gave it four stars because I don't think they are super great books, but my son really likes them and that is saying a lot. He likes the mysteries and how they are solved.
Book Description
Collecting handkerchiefs is one of the few affordable areas of collecting in which the collectible also takes up very little space. Most people have preconceived notions of what hankies arewhite cotton or linen square, decorated with a bit of lace or embroidery and are surprised and delighted with what they see in this bookcolor, pattern, and humor. Whats more, these hankies are a social history of their time, the 1940s and 1950s. With World War II, women became Rosie the Riveters, making their own money and enjoying their independence. The hankies in Handkerchiefs: A Collectors Guide, Volume 2, reflect this new equality with their bright, optimistic colors and subjects. New social conventions, such as road trips, barbecues, and the cocktail hour, which became the fabric of America in the decade after the war, were chronicled in handkerchiefs. This book brings out the collector in anyone who inherited hankies from a mother or grandmother, or who enjoys good design. There are no repeats from Volume 1 in the more than 600 new examples shown.

Hanky Collectors Dream Book.......2007-07-12
This book gives lots of information about companies and patterns. The prices are not really realistic some low some high but the information the book is great.Handkerchiefs: A Collector's Guide (Identification & Values)
I love hankies.......2007-05-24
This collector's guide is full of good information, and the photos are phenomenal! I was looking for more history, I guess, but the book is exactly what the title claims. Well written and fun to read.
Delightful Memories.......2005-10-19
While I am not a collector, I truly appreciated the artful display and extensive variety of handkerchiefs in this feature. It touched a chord from my childhood of memories of the influential women in my life (from relatives to the good Dominican nuns at school) and the delightful little "hankies" they all seemed to mysteriously keep tucked up their sleeves. How interesting to see the authors track the development of the various types and designs.

This book contains scores of intriguing puzzles and paradoxes from Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, whose interests ranged from inventing new games like Arithmetical Croquet to important problems in symbolic logic and propositional calculus. Written by Carroll expert and well-known mathematics author Martin Gardner, this tour through Carroll's inventions is both fun and informative.
Customer Reviews:
the editorial review math is exactly correct!.......2005-04-21
Ok, since there is some confusion on the issue, let me explain how the 2/3 comes about. We are looking for the probability that the second marble is white, given that the first one pulled out of the bag was.
First intuitively - if you think about it, if there had been 2 white marbles in the bag to start with you're more likely to have pulled out a white marble on the first draw than you would have if the bag started with one white and one black. That is, knowing that you pulled out a white marble, it's more likely that both marbles were white than it is that there was one of each.
Now mathematically - this is called conditional probability. Because of the problem description, before drawing the bag could either contain one of each color or two white marbles, each of these options with probability .5 (50%). If the bag has one of each, your probability of drawing white first is .5, and if it has two whites your probability of drawing white first is 1 (100%).
So, the (compound) probability that the bag has one of each *and* you get white first is .5 x .5 = .25 and the probability that the bag has both white and you get white first is .5 x 1 = .5. So, the total probability of getting white first is the sum of the probabilities of these two possible ways of that occuring, .75.
Now, the actual probability that was requested was that of there being a white marble in the bag after taking out a white one...that is, what's the probability of the bag having had 2 white marbles if you know it had at least one. This should be the same as the probability of getting two white marbles divided by the probability that the first marble was white.
Probability notation for this conditional probability is
P(W2|W1) = P(W1 & W2)/P(W2)
Which then is .5/.75, which is equal to 2/3 - the number given in the editorial. The result does maybe initially seem to be a strange number, but there is no wiggle room here. It's correct.
Letter to the editorial review.......2005-03-11
The Editorial has single handedly solved a modern dilemma in the world of Mathematics. I do believe it has been said that it is better to be assumed a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt. The final conclusion is that the contradiction leads us to realize a possible incompleteness in the system. Here is how:
Solution #1 As the state of the bag, after the operation, is necessarily identical with its state before it, the chance is just what it was, viz. 1/2. Solution #2 Let B and W1 stand for the black or white counter that may be in the bag at the start and W2 for the added white counter. After removing white counter there are three equally likely states:
Inside bag------Outside bag
W1--------------W2
W2--------------W1
B ---------------W2
In two of these states a white counter remains in the bag, and so the chance of drawing a white counter the second time is 2/3. This contradiction of the first solution might indicate that the system offers an incomplete answer (not that the first answer was wrong).
Essential for Lewis Carroll fans.......2002-01-08
Lewis Carroll was in "real life" Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and author of books on geometry and logic. Mathematics intrudes into his children's books, especially Sylvie and Bruno. There is nobody better qualified to explain this side of Lewis Carroll to the non-mathematician than Martin Gardner, author of the Annotated Alice and for many years the compiler of the Mathematical Puzzles column in Scientific American. This book will delight Carroll's many fans and may intrigue many who would not normally be attracted to children's fiction. I also recommend the two books on Lewis Carroll's puzzles by Edward Wakeling; as a professional mathematician, he brings a complementary perspective.

Book Description
Drawing a picture while telling a story is a tradition that can be found in cultures around the world--perhaps dating back to early "cave paintings." No one knows when and where this unique form of storytelling originated, but for generations, drawing stories have delighted and informed listeners--and they continue to fascinate audiences today. Renowned storyteller Anne Pellowski has traveled the world, collecting drawing stories from such diverse countries as Indonesia, Korea, Romania, Germany, Sweden and Japan. Here she presents more than 30 ready-to-tell tales, along with step-by-step directions for the ingenious illustrations that accompany them, and tips for engaging your audience in further learning. You'll find well-known tales, such as "The Black Cat," which was made famous by Lewis Carroll, as well as many drawing stories that have never before appeared in print, including a number of Japanese ekaki-uta and Australian Aboriginal sand stories. An added feature is the inclusion of 5 delightful handkerchief ("hanky panky") stories, which originated in Europe in the 19th century. Historical background of the tales, notes on sources, and a bibliography complete the work. Guaranteed to enchant listeners young and old, these simple tales especially appeal to today's visual learners, and can easily be incorporated into curriculum studies and into the storyteller's repertoire. A valuable treasury for educators, storytellers, and folklorists.

Hanky Panky An Intimate History of the Handkerchief by Helen Gustafson
Helen Gustafson applies her storytelling talents to the enchanting, unique history of the handkerchief in America. Part memoir, part social history, HANKY PANKY weaves a captivating tale of this delicate linen, which is now enjoying a renaissance of sorts. For those who grew up before Kleenex tissue came on the scene, this volume will bring back the glory days, when handkerchiefs were an indispensable part of every woman's wardrobe and toilette. For those born AK (after Kleenex), the breathtaking illustrations and juicy handkerchief gossip about such icons as Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, and Jackie Kennedy will give them a newfound appreciation for this timeless accessory.
Customer Reviews:
Not designed to be informative.......2006-05-21
The only book about handkerchiefs I could find, and it has no information about how to care for them. Mostly anecdotes about the author's personal antique hanky collection, with full-page photographs of the more significant hankies.
I wasn't interested in your antique hankies; the topic does not entertain me.
I wanted to learn about the cultural role served by hankies, their social symbolism, why you're supposed to have one folded up in your tuxedo pocket, how to wash them in such a way that they neither wear out nor carry diseases, how gentlepeople used to communicate by waving hankies around, and whether "mens" hankies are three times the size of "ladies" hankies because men are supposed to have bigger boogers, or what. I have so many questions about hankies and this book didn't answer any of them. Being informative was simply not the book's purpose.
Although, it did show that geisha would sometimes carry a hanky with a silk butterfly sewn onto it over a lace hole, so that when she waved the hanky as she gestured, the breeze would pass through the hole and the silk butterfly's wings would flutter. That was cool.
beautiful book!.......2005-08-04
I collect handkercheifs, and it was great to find a book about them, especially one as pretty as this!
Thanks so much, I love it!
