Ann Brashares has created a wonderful, heartfelt series for teens (and adults) around a pair of pants. In her breakout bestseller, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Brashares introduced readers to four girls, Lena, Bridget, Carmen, and Tibby, and to the magical pair of jeans that fit them all perfectly, and inspired them to live their young lives to the fullest. Forever in Blue, the fourth and final novel in the series, promises a dazzling finale--one "last glorious summer" for the four girls, and their fans. See a note from author Ann Brashares, below.--Daphne Durham

A Note from Ann Brashares

December 1, 2006

Dear Amazon Reader,

Well, here we are together again. If you are getting ready to read the fourth book, Forever in Blue, that means we've probably spent some time together. I hope you've enjoyed it. I know I have.

We don't know each other and we may never get to meet, but I feel like we are connected nonetheless. We've spent time with four fictional girls together. We've puzzled over their lives and their choices. We've rooted for them and sometimes felt annoyed by them. We've shared some hopes for them, I think, and in the process for ourselves.

So thank you for being part of the sisterhood with me. I have really appreciated your company along the way.

Happy reading,

Ann

The Second Summer of the Sisterhood

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Book Description

With unraveled embroidery and fraying hems, the Traveling Pants are back for one last, glorious summer.

Lena: Immerses herself in her painting and an intoxicating summer fling, fearing that the moment she forgets about Kostos will be the moment she sees him again.

Carmen: Falls under the spell of a sophisticated college friend for whom a theatrical role means everything and the heritage of the Pants means nothing.

Bridget: Joins a dig for an ancient city on the coast of Turkey and discovers that her archaeology professor is available in every way except one.

Tibby: Leaves behind someone she loves, wrongly believing he will stay where she has left him.

Join Ann Brashares's beloved sisterhood once again in a dazzling, fearless novel. It's a summer that will forever change the lives of Lena, Carmen, Bee, and Tibby, here and now, past and future, together and apart.

3 out of 5 stars I liked the others better.......2007-08-10

This was the book made to tie up loose ends. Everyone came to a conclusion about their life and the pants. The whole thing was sort of boring. Yes I liked the book, but in a way everyone was the same as they started. I suppose the point of it was to show how they had grown up and still stayed the same. Maybe it was that there wasn't enough excitement or maybe it's that I'm tired now but i thought it wasn't as good as the other books.

5 out of 5 stars Sisterhood.......2007-08-04

I have enjoyed this entire series...takes me back to my Judy Blume days. The girl in all of us can identify with these characters as they grow, change, and try to not lose themselves or each other in the process. The earlier on you learn that nothing means more than your girl friends...the better off you are! I think the quotes between the chapters are insightful, and I enjoy finding their relation to the story as I read on. That brings a literary aspect not often found in young adult novels. I appreciate that this book and its prequels can be light and real at the same time. A book about pants sounds like fluff, but you feel with these girls as they deal with real issues both internal and external. Real doesn't have to be dark...bittersweet seems more fitting. These books capture the laughter through tears that is what sisterhood is about. I highly recommend reading them all.

4 out of 5 stars So Long Sisterhood.......2007-07-26

Although this wasn't my fave Sisterhood book, it deserves kudos for not only reflecting the maturity of the characters at this point in their lives, but also the realities of growing up and growing apart. This is the fourth and supposedly final chapter of the Sisterhood tomes, and is likely to provide a conclusive feeling for the readers of the series.

To recap, the Travelling Pants series details the summers four best friends spend, sometimes apart, sometimes together. They are of course, as per the legend, bonded together by a pair of 'magical' pants that give them the strength of the love they feel as friends even when they aren't together.

In all fairness I read the third book quite some time ago so reading the new fourth one was a bit of a cognitive leap - I could barely remember a lot of what happened in the past! Anyway in this one the girls are bridging the gap between their first and second year of university. They've actually shared the pants year-round this time because they have spent the year at different colleges etc. That should be your first clue something is up - the girls are very very much so a lot more individual characters this time around, which was both refreshing and problematic. Of the latter, it was good because I was sick and tired of how cheesy and overemphasized their relationship was - although some sappy moments still exist towards the end, they are certainly toned down. But in the absence of their friendship it almost defeated the purpose of the book, and the pants of course.

This time around the girls spend most of their summer apart. Tibby is still in New York working and taking a summer class and wondering whether she has made the right choices when it comes to her relationship with Brian. Bee (my fave as always) is in Turkey getting back to basics on an archeological dig site and wondering whether the best alternative to missing her boyfriend is not missing a single thing her hot professor does. Flamboyent Carmen has surprisingly shrunk into her shell over the last year, and fallen under the wing of a supposedly protective, glorious friend, who turns out to be anything but as their summer continues. Lena is at art school and enraptured with a guy, shockingly this time, not the love of her life, Kostos.

As I mentioned earlier, the book definitely took on a more mature tone than the others - most of it dealt with sex and relationships and very little of it focused on friendship and personal self-growth - although most of the storylines evolve to give the girls those girl power moments of epiphany. Although I enjoyed the storylines a lot more this time it almost felt like the characters were under-used and less developed because there was far less crossover opportunities given their summer was spent so far apart emotionally and physically.

Brashares does a good job wrapping up the series in a realistic way though - Upon finishing it, I realized why she decided to do a fourth (I completely assumed the third would be the last) as each book is kind of meant to represent each of the four girls.

All in all a fitting conclusion to the series that represented, quite honestly, the realities of growing up and moving away when it comes to those true blue friends you thought you'd never forget, and those true blue jeans you thought you'd never lose.

5 out of 5 stars Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants).......2007-07-19

OMG!!! I loved every single one of the books preceding this book and this one hit the mark! It is so wonderful, and though it is so sad that it ends the series the finish is remarkable. Brashare's masterpiece is complete!!!

2 out of 5 stars One too many.......2007-07-15

I thought the prime qualities of the first three books of this series were charm and innocence. For the fourth installment, one of our heroines poses nude for a male art student and another falls for a married man with children. Whatever other qualities the book may have, charming and innocent it is not.

In 1995, Laurie Beth Jones released Jesus CEO, the first book in a trilogy that traces her own journey from well-pressed executive through a season of personal self- examination, ending finally in blue jeans, having found her heart's true home. The Path is the second book and helps readers identify their divine purpose in life. Her final book, Jesus in Blue Jeans, answers a request: "Could you write a book that could help me with my everyday life?"

Beginning with the proposition that Jesus had an everyday life, Laurie Beth Jones explores the four fundamental qualities of Jesus that we can emulate in our everyday lives: poise, perspective, passion, and power. We investigate the everyday challenges common to all of us, using Jesus' life as our model. Each chapter includes a meditation and teaching, and closes with question to challenge and motivate us. She doesn't intend that we remain passive spectators, rather that we embrace life and participate fully.

Jones has a special gift for presenting the teachings of Jesus in ways that are at once practical and transcendent. By writing about subjects that are familiar to all of us, she makes us comfortable with exploring this unfamiliar ground. Once we feel safe, she quietly steps aside, shifting our attention from our own anxieties to the wisdom of Jesus. The result is an openness and receptivity that might not have been possible for us before.

Jones removes Jesus from theology without sacrificing her own belief. Her love for God is evident and her life seems to overflow with love, enthusiasm, and joy. Moreover, she builds within the reader a curiosity or hunger that goes well beyond the covers of this book, giving the reader the incentive to explore Jesus for him- or herself, so that each experiences the grandeur of life. --Patricia Klein

5 out of 5 stars Jesus' Common Life .......2007-04-04

It helps me to see Jesus' common life in the other side of a fence where the other side is His business life. It opens my eyes to balance my whole life at home as well as at work. It is recommended if you want to know the balance life in both sides. :-)

4 out of 5 stars A lovely text, and quite informative..........2005-10-12

I was quite thrilled to find this, and I literally had no idea that such subject matter existed. I stumbled upon this book by chance, and I am now quite glad I did. I can rest much easier at night with the knowledge that our Lord and Savior prefers the 80's throwback of Acid-Washed jeans from Levi's. I'm so glad to hear that. I always knew that He would never go for that blasphemous Calvin Klein. Amen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Life Application.......2001-11-13

Many times in Bible studies and in associated books theology bogs down the particpants and distants them from understanding where the Lord Jesus is in everyday life. If you need pure "study", this book is not for you. However, if you've been through the studies of Scripture and need time to reflect upon your everyday walk, this book is divine. Very simple written - short paragraphs, each ending with prayer and reflection. I had bought my wife the book "Jesus as CEO", after she received a promotion to a management position where she works. She loved the book, which she still uses today as a tool in working with her fellow employees. Jesus In Bluejeans is very similar - a tool which can be used for personal reflection of your walk with Jesus. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars MAkes Jesus real and here.......2000-07-31

One problem many people have with Christianity today is that Jesus seems so mystical and far away. We see Him as a robe clad person of 2000 years ago. Jones puts forth the idea of Jesus coming to us in the cloths of our day. That He is here with us and that His messages are relevant today in this world. Read a sction a day or just crusie through from start to finish. Just read and be comforted in the fact that there is a God here for us today.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book.......1999-10-15

This book was a very good book to read, talking about everyday life the way Jesus would see it. I was captivated by her opening remark: I was in a field and I saw Jesus walking up to me in a pair of blue jeans. Why are you wearing those I asked? Because that's what you wear today.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-07-12

Excellent book, it would be great for recommended reading for psychology classes. It discusses multiple mental health issues with success and not so succussful treatment profiles. Discusses how mental health treatment options have changed discussing new medications and future medications. It will give hope and understanding to those who have mental health issues and to their families.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about chemical imbalances!.......2007-03-12

I got this book to help me deal with a loved one struggling with depression. It was well written and had great info, particularly about brain chemicals. I like that the authors stress the importance of knowing what you're dealing with before you medicate! Would recommend this for anyone wanting to know more about 'mood disorders'. I also appreciated the info about nutrition and lifestyle being essential.

5 out of 5 stars Well balanced book.......2007-02-02

I appologize for writing a review before completely finishing the book. I am here to order at least 5 more books and noticed these reviews. I am astonished at the criticism. I am a conservative Christian who believes in natural healing and has hardly ever gone to see a doctor in my life. But I am also working on a masters in counseling, I have a mother and a(deceased) sister who are borderline hystrionic, and both have (or had) obsesive cumpulsive hoarding disorder, a husband who has had dysthymia since he was nine years old and has never taken medication for it, a grown son who was suicidal 6 years ago, and a grown daughter who has bipolar spectrum disorder. I know what it means to have "blue genes". I can't tell you how refreshing it has been to read this book! The authors do not "just push medications". They make it very clear in the book that 80% of their patients don't need medications. They demonstrate how psychotherapy can relieve clients without medications. They also point out the role of nutrition deficiency in these disorders. But they emphasize to a public in denial the need for medications in 20% of clients with mental disorders. Christians must realize that the world we live in is not the same world God created 6000 years ago. We rebellious humans have gone very far in destroying what God made perfect, not only in our natural resources, but also in our very genes. That is why John the Revelator saw in vision that "the (polluted) heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together" (Rev 6:14) and Paul said "we shall all be changed [healed] in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump" (1 Cor 15:51-51) and why, after the millenium (Rev 20) the earth will be melted down by fire into a lake and thus be purified. Until then we, with the wisdom and knowledge that God gives us in response to our prayers, must do what we can to be healthy and thus an honor to God. It is not an honor to God when his people are physcially or psychologically sick. If it is a lack of faith to use medicine that can restore our abused bodies, then we should go completely natural and back to being hunters and gatherers and wearing fig leaves. Thank you for "listening".

2 out of 5 stars Too extreme - from a Christian perspective.......2007-01-30

The hope and insight that Dr. Meier gives those who have struggled with chemical imbalances is inspiring. His acceptance of people who are dealing with mental & emotional health issues is wonderful and necessary. Unfortunately, there are still stigmas attached to people with mental health problems. Dr. Meier and his co-authors truly understand the physiology of these problems. They have worked with thousands of people and have a real heart to help others. Their compassion and understanding are desperately needed in our churches and in our culture.

However, this book does not have a healthy balance for Christians. I felt that it sped right past encouragement and solid advice into some wild extremes. The overall impression I had after reading the book was that is was a shameless endorsement for prescritption drug companies and the Meier Day Programs.

The end of the book reads like a corny science fiction novel (see the last chapters titled Benefits of Stem-Cell and Other Research, Computer Chips in Treatment, and Cloning p. 185-191...it's an entire review in and of itself). It's surprising that Dr. Meier dropped several names like Chuck Swindoll and Focus on the Family's Dr. Dobson in his book. Did either of these men take the time to thoroughly read it? Do they realize what they are endorsing in this book? This guy seems like he is on the edge and going over fast!

The book speaks for itself....again and again. The first few pages begin by explaining that the key to happiness is found in taking presciption medication. Dr Meier, himself, has found happiness and productivity in taking medication. He explains that he can't write books or even practice medicine without it:

"I have rather severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Before taking ADHD medications, I would sometimes make impulsive decisions that affected my family, such as blurting out negative comments or making impulsive financial decisions that hurt the family budget.
By taking ADHD medications every day, I can stay focused and organized and do a better job of being a family member and practicing psychiatry with my clients. They also help me write more articles and books.
In my practice of medicine, without these ADHD meds, I could make multiple mistakes, such as leaving dates off prescriptions, losing focus while clients are sharing extremely pertinent data, and so on. Moreover, I write about two or three books every year whole on medications and could write only one book every two or three years without them. So if I were too prideful to admit that I had any mental dysfunction, and I refused to take psychiatric medications, I would hinder God, Who gave me that biochemical disability for a reason, using my books, radio talk shows, and TV guest appearances to influence millions of people for His cause. I would be taking the "all natural" route to impress my "new-age" neighbors and legalistic believers, but accomplish one-third as much for Jesus and for my family." - Paul Meier, M.D. p 10

Does he really believe that it is just for a few who are struggling and have tried all other alternatives? I don't think so. Dr. Meier believes that the answer to most all of our problems is found in taking medication. And he believes this happiness is intended for over half of the world's population:

"The January 17 Time magazine articles estimated that up to 50 percent of the world's population [3 billion people?] might have an underlying genetic propensity for mental health problems. That means that 50 % of those of us `lucky enough' to have blue genes often suffer from more psychiatric problems than the other half of the population. We are prone to depression, sadness and anger, especially under stressful circumstances...About 20 percent of the population [over 1 billion] either requires lifelong psychiatric medications to avoid depression and other mental disorders or they would enjoy great benefits from modern-day psychiatric medication." p. 9

This book explains in detail exactly which medications will work and gives the names and all the information needed to talk to a physician. I have to admit that I was tempted to hop on the prescription bandwagon myself after reading the book (maybe that was the point). According to Dr. Meier, meds work to bring about the fruit of the spirit in our life, heal us from our bad habits, our sins and our emotional problems. Who wouldn't want those things? But something just didn't ring true to me; I still believe there's something to be said for relying on the Lord and the Holy Spirit. There is no quick-fix solution for life. Even though Dr. Meier mentions this himself in the book, one doesn't get the impression that he really means it.

Unfortunately, I picked this up in my church's small bookstore. There is certainly some good information here, but Dr. Meier's views about all that medication can accomplish are way too far-fetched. I would steer clear of Blue Genes and look for something a little more biblically balanced.

3 out of 5 stars Supports a use for medications by Christians.......2006-10-10

The book jacket offers "practical advice" on dealing with emotional and behavioral problems. I didn't find a lot of practical advice, but a lot of indepth case histories. While most books tend to deal with the psychological solutions to depression and behavioral issues, this book did show a Christian basis for needed pharmacological soltions, which is generally not addressed. However, most of the book was stories of someone tormented who turned to the Meier Clinics for help and were cured (not overnight granted, but always cured nonetheless). So it was much more of an ad for the Meier clinics than anything else.

Hopefully in conjunction with other reading, people will find this information useful.

This book is an absolute must for everyone. In today's economy we have to make smart purchases. Steve Boorstein covers how to care for your wardrobe and how to make it last. What a great book. I especially love the section on first aid for stain emergencies, with little ones running around it is almost impossible not to get something on my favorite blouse!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable to layman and professional alike!.......2002-10-25

This book covers it all - plain and simple. If you want to have a good grasp of the realities of wardrobe development and maintenance, there is not a single salient topic that is not given its due.

From the planning, to the purchase, to the wearing and finally the cleaning and/or storing of your wardrobe - you are given a healthy dose of do's and don'ts that wil save you time, money and heartache.

The book is laid out so that it can be just as easily read in bits and pieces, or cover to cover.

I especially liked the section which explained the concept and benefits of a personal shopper. I had always thought that this service was only available to the VIP who spent mega-bucks. Not so.

Required reading for anyone who has a substantial investment in their wardrobe ... or who wants to protect their more modest investment.

    Book Description

Winner of the 2004 Prix Saint-Exupéry, an award given yearly to the best illustrated picture book in France by the family of The Little Prince author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry .

    In the big gray city,
Lived a little boy who never played...

With A Blue So Blue, Jean-François Dumont has created an outstanding picture book that will dazzle the eye, stir the imagination, and warm the heart. The exquisitely written tale whisks children off of a fantastic journey across land and sea. Every page features breathtaking paintings, rich in color and detail. It is simply a magical tour de force of illustration and storytelling.
The adventure begins with a little boy's marvelous dream of a perfect blue, a blue both soft and strong, a blue so blue you want to curl up inside it. Armed with a paintbrush, he travels the globe in search of this special color--from a famous art gallery to a mid-Atlantic fishing boat, from a remote blues club in the Mississippi Delta to a sun-drenched desert with a purple sky--only to realize that what he was looking for was right in his very own home after all.

5 out of 5 stars Kind of Blue.......2005-11-19

"Diva," the 1981 thriller directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix, contains a brief shot of a blue vase so beautiful that I remember the experience of that color more than I do most of the characters. The vase had little or nothing to do with the plot; I suspect that Beineix or his cinematographer was simply enthralled with the apperception of that one particular shade.

"A Blue So Blue" is similarly concerned with sensation and aesthetic experience. A young, artistic boy dreams one night of the color blue-but not just any blue. He tries to find that one kind of blue when he awakens. He rummages through his paints and goes to the art museum in search of "the right blue...the blue of his dreams." He even dips his wet paintbrush onto the paintings to sample their blues! A guard suggests that maybe the "Big Blue Sea" is the blue of his dreams. He goes there, but it not the blue he is looking for. A sailor suggests the South Sea, and the boy, in a magnificent 2-page spread, is pictured sailing through a storm towards a tropical island. He dips his paintbrush into the South Sea sky, into a guitar's blue notes in Mississippi, and into an African chief''s blue turban. Finally, the boy finds his blue, and it's a little like "The Wizard of Oz": All the time it was in his own backyard (or front yard, or wherever his mother is).

Unlike the blue vase in Diva, the book's cover does not convey the experience of reading "A Blue So Blue." Jean-Francois Dumont's imaginative, dramatic, gorgeous pictures won the prestigious France's Saint-Exupery Award for the best-illustrated children's book of 2004. Dumont captures the essence of the different settings as well as the emotional climate. Furthermore, Dumont writes colorfully, evoking the boy's adventures and longing in both prose and rhyme. Here's just one example of the boy many attempts to convey his dreamed-of blue:

"'Night after night I've been dreaming of blue,' the little boy said. `A blue so blue it's both precious and plain. A blue so blue, it's hard to explain. Can you help me find the blue of my dreams?'"

Dumont employs his own `precious and plain' half-rhyming prose to narrate the boy's adventures and the advice given by the various well-meaning adults. "A Blue So Blue" speaks to-and shows us--the joy of art and painting, and the sometimes-incomprehensible mixture of beauty with emotion. Children will love the strong portrayals of the guard, the sailor, the blues guitarist, and the searching boy, as well as his voyages and eventual return to his blue-eyed mother. The illustrations have a vibrant immediacy and truth that will appeal to a wide age range. Produced on high quality paper with excellent color reproduction, this book's presents an authentic and memorable aesthetic experience in a very accessible context. Very highly recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars A Blue So Blue.......2005-09-06

This was the perfect book for a daughter who is also a mother whose eyes are so blue, but the story was marginal. I would not buy it for my grandchildren, it wasn't entertaining enough. The pictures would appeal to adults more than children. But for my purposes it was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars truly an award winning book.......2005-02-18

This is a wonderful book. I bought it to read to my three year old and both of us love it. The illustrations are beautiful, the prose is brilliant, and the story is magical. Every time we read it, it sparks a new discussion. I have no doubt this will be a favorite for years to come. This is truly an award winning book.

        Book Description

Like the figures in the ancient oral literature of Native Americans, children who lived through the American Indian boarding school experience became heroes, bravely facing a monster not of their own making. Sometimes the monster swallowed them up. More often, though, the children fought the monster and grew stronger. This volume draws on the full breadth of this experience in showing how American Indian boarding schools provided both positive and negative influences for Native American children. The boarding schools became an integral part of American history, a shared history that resulted in Indians “turning the power” by using their school experiences to grow in wisdom and benefit their people.

The first volume of essays ever to focus on the American Indian boarding school experience, and written by some of the foremost experts and most promising young scholars of the subject, Boarding School Blues ranges widely in scope, addressing issues such as sports, runaways, punishment, physical plants, and Christianity. With comparative studies of the various schools, regions, tribes, and aboriginal peoples of the Americas and Australia, the book reveals both the light and the dark aspects of the boarding school experience and illuminates the vast gray area in between.
