Book Description

Model, film star, socialite, friend, lover, addict, Edie Sedgwick was the first "it" girl of the Andy Warhol Factory scene and later muse to Bob Dylan. The arc of Edie's life traced the rise and fall of the 1960s from idyllic experimentation to dissolute recklessness. After being toasted by the whole of New York City, Edie died alone of a drug overdose in California at the age of 28. David Weisman (with John Palmer) filmed Edie for the last five years of her life in his cult film Ciao! Manhattan. When he recently uncovered lost footage of Edie, David was inspired to create Edie: Girl on Fire, a book and a documentary film that explores Edie's true story. He and coauthor Melissa Painter have tracked down and interviewed many of Edie Sedgwick's surviving intimates, including Danny Fields, Baby Jane Holzer, and Ultra Violet. They also unearthed hundreds of never-before-published photos portraits, professional ad shoots, and heartbreaking snapshots of the girl who won New York's heart and nearly burned down the Chelsea hotel. The book also features a CD with Edie's last interview ever, a riveting account of a rollercoaster life. Sure to be seen as a rebuttal to Hollywood's highly fictionalized film Factory Girl (coming this fall), Edie: Girl on Fire creates an insightful and startling portrait of a woman that nobody quite knew.

5 out of 5 stars Superstar Edie!.......2007-05-13

I adored it...full of photo's I'd never seen before of Edie...new quotes, etc. Really gave me insight into her whole vibe & electricity. major fun! and it comes with a great CD with an interview.

5 out of 5 stars The Girl Is On Fire.......2007-04-23

Edie: Girl On Fire is chalked full of rare pictures and new commentary from the people who knew Edie the best, her husband, friends & family. The co-author of the book, David Weisman, not only shares never-before-seen pictures of Edie but, also marvels at the Edie obsession some 36 years after her death. Weisman & Painter do an excellent job of portraying the real Edie through pictures & stories shared by Edie's family & friends. They don't romanticize Edie as being an victim. In fact, they show that Edie was just like the rest of us. A flawed human being who was trying to find a place in the world during a turbulent time period. Edie's flaws are not glossed over or explained away. Instead, they show what a disturbed and lost young woman she was. Weisman himself knew Edie personally for years. Weisman saw Edie at her zenith and watched her fall apart and ultimately lose her life because of her own addictions & obsessions.

One of the best parts of the book is the pictures. After years of seeing the same Edie pictures over & over, there are finally pages & pages of glorious "new" pictures including scrapped "Life" magazine photoshoots and newspapers covering one of the many fires that Edie started at various hotels due to her speed usage. Another awesome part is the cd of audio interviews Edie conducted towards the end of her life for what would be her last movie "Ciao! Manhattan!" (made by co-author Weisman). Edie talks about her many drug trips and her time at the Factory. She's candid, well spoken and heartbreaking. When listening to this cd of Edie's voice and looking at the pictures, you almost want the ending to change. You want Edie to pull through all this garbage and rise from the ashes like a phoenix. Just like any story, the ending never changes and there's really no happily ever after.

4 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire Review.......2007-03-25

The book is filled with many great photos of Edie. Many I've never seen before. The text if fine, mostly quotes from many different people. I think I would have given this book a 5 if it contained more of a narrative type of text vs. many quotes.

5 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire.......2007-03-21

This book is excellent. The pictures really tell the story of
Edie Sedgwick, '60's Warhol groupie, actress, model who lived a "roller coaster" life. Comments by those who knew her make the tale of her life
interesting & real.

5 out of 5 stars Edie:Girl on Fire!.......2007-03-18

Hot coffee table book with lots of rare Edie interviews & photos! A must for all Edie fans & a great companion to the Ciao Manhattan DVD! Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Costume Haute Couture..........2007-02-23

I picked this book up at a local bookstore for a whopping $5.00 . I enjoyed the movies, but they definitely aren't at the top of my favorites list. This book appealed to me purely for the fashion, costume, and design aspects. And it delivers a beautiful display for all those things. I actually found myself reading the book (usually I just dissect the pictures and draw inspiration that way), and found it to be well written as well. The text, gives insight into how a large scale costuming production works for theatrical purposes. It illustrates all of the dynamics of organizing such a production from start to finish. I imagine this would be a good read for someone interested in the theatrical costuming field. Besides that, it is a wonderful coffee table book , or uber bible of clothes for the "Con" participant. Surely worth ten times what I paid!

4 out of 5 stars Simply breathtaking!.......2007-02-09

I finally got this book - now I don't know why I waited! Totally worth it!

Anyone who is a fan of Star Wars and even a casual fan of costumes will truly enjoy this book. The book is filled with exquisitely detailed photos and descriptions of all of the costumes from Eps 1-3, and many from Eps 4-6, but the focus is really on the costumes that dominated the last 3 films - those of Amidala/Padmé, the Emperor, Bail Organa, Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc. Some of the most creative details are illustrated on the numerous characters that only appear briefly at the senate meetings, and their attire reflects their status in society as well as the environment from which they come. There are close-ups of the detailed beadwork, stitching, tooled leather and fabrics used to create each work of art. There is also a visual reference at the back of the book with images of every Star Wars costume, and there are a few foldout pages as well showing the different styled robes and gowns for some of the main characters. The next best thing would be to touch the fabric! (Supposedly you can do that in the limited edition boxed version - complete with fabric samples).

Several character illustrations by Iain McCaig, Dermot Power, and others are shown - which is amazing to see the concept art of the character with their wardrobe, then the final masterpiece by Trisha Biggar.

A must for anyone in love with Star Wars and the imaginative design that set the stage for each character.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous book.......2007-01-09

Probably one of the five or ten best Star Wars books, up there with the 'Art of' books from the Classic trilogy. This is a terrific look at Trisha Biggar's amazing work, and gets into exquisite detail on many of the sumptuous costumes from the prequels. Whether you loved or hated the films, you must admit, the outfits were out of this world, and this book chronicles all that work and effort. Well worth a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, yes, grid reference............2004-05-26

I received this book as part of a group of textbooks received for my costume design course at FIDM. I used a nice, red, ballpoint pen (this would've been 1990, y'know, before acid/lignin-free - and especially non-bleeding - pens were freely available) to mark out my ten-grid grid. Anyway, I used the Phoenix (Elizabethan or Jacobean) corset pattern to make one of my projects, and it turned out beautifully (if only it still fit me!). I also drafted a Tudor corset from one of the patterns, and we did a panier petticoat from this text as well.

You might say the book is well-loved. Really, really, well-loved.

Which, I would think, goes far in stating how useful this book is, and how much information, especially in the form of period patterns, is available within. I couldn't have done without it, and I don't think anyone else should have to.

4 out of 5 stars very useful book.......2001-08-09

When I look at the few period costumes I made (I'm only a beginner), I really think this book helped me to improve my cutting abilities, sewing tips and above all, the authentic period feeling when the garment is worn and moves on stage. Jean Hunnisett tells you what you're expecting to find at the end of your work and helps you to understand the historical background of period costume. This is the only book which explains in detail the draping method over a corset and guides you step-by-step in the construction of the costume but it is sometimes a bit confusing in her sewing instructions and she gives the impression there's only one way to realize something (ex: 18th century corset). Anyway, I learned a lot and she's a very good teacher. (Don't be tempted to enlarge her scaled patterns,it doesn't work very well( too many corrections) and it's easier to make your own patterns by the flat or by draping.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have for theatrical designers!.......2000-01-07

This is a superb tool for any theatrical designer/period pattern maker! Jean Hunnisett's experience with the BBC is unmatched and this book is the standard of perfection. It's a clearly defined guide for the correct shape and cut of any era of costume, whether it be Tudor or Georgian. The information and tips that she 'unlocks' will give you a total sense of what each garment should look like in complete detail, with outstanding illustrations and descriptions, from the draping process, fitting, constructing, and trimming. Jean Hunnisett is a master in her craft, and her attention to period accuracy is clearly shown in all three books.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the serious costumer.......1998-09-22

Hunniset gives scale patterns of garments that are functional and provide a period sillhouette from the foundation up. The scale is something you have to be careful with, however, because different patterns are drawn on different scales. This book is for the experienced sewer and should be considered a technical manual rather than a research resource but I have not found its equal in clarity, correctness and completeness. I reccomend the whole set!

In 1953, When Audrey Hepburn burst onto the screen in Roman Holiday, she forever changed the international ideal of elegance, grace, and beauty. Suddenly, glamour and even sexiness seemed attainable for women everywhere; Audrey was uncommonly beautiful, but she was real--hers was a look anyone could aim for, but few could pull off as effortlessly or effectively. By mixing a few classic elements of "Audrey style"--the little black dress, ballet flats with slim capri pants, bold hats and sunglasses--suburban housewives became more Hollywood than Hoboken in an instant.

Here author Pamela Clarke Keogh introduces us to the woman behind the clothes, using words from friends, fellow actors, and designers who dressed her to paint a picture of a truly remarkable woman. A humanitarian, artist, friend, and above all, survivor, Audrey inspired women and men alike to approach life with spirit, grace, and simplicity. The nearly 100 color and black-and-white photographs, paired with original sketches from such fashion luminaries as Givenchy, Manolo Blahnik, and Vera Wang, show that Audrey was much more than a beautiful, well-dressed personality; her courage and individuality come shining through in every page. --Leah Ball

Book Description

Everyone, it seems, is a fan of Audrey's. She was Gigi, a princess, Holly Golightly, a nun, Maid Marian, even an angel. And we believed her in every role. But Audrey Hepburn was also one of the most admired and emulated women of the twentieth century, who encouraged women to discover and highlight their own strength. By example, she not only changed the way women dress--she forever altered the way they viewed themselves.

But Audrey Hepburn's beauty was more than skin deep. "You know the Audrey you saw onscreen? Audrey was like that in real life, only a million times better," says designer Jeffrey Banks. For the first time, this style biography reveals the details--fashion and otherwise--that contributed so greatly to Audrey's appeal. Drawing on original interviews with Hubert de Givenchy, Gregory Peck, Nancy Reagan, Doris Brynner, and Audrey Wilder, as well as reminiscences of professional friends like Steven Spielberg, Ralph Lauren, noted Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby, Steven Meisel, and Kevyn Aucoin, Audrey Style brings the Audrey her family and friends loved to life.

With more than ninety color and black-and-white photographs, many of which have never before been published, and original designer sketches from Edith Head, Hubert de Givenchy, Vera Wang, Manolo Blahnik, Alexander McQueen, and others, Audrey Style gives measure to the grace, humor, intelligence, generosity, and inimitable fashion sense that was Audrey Hepburn.

1 out of 5 stars Pass the sick bag, Mabel.......2007-06-22

Even though I'm definitely an AH fan, I thought that the author went overboard with praise for Miss Hepburn's personal qualities. No doubt AH herself would be embarassed to read all this fawning and adulation.

This book attempts to combine into one an AH biography and an analysis of her fashion style. Unfortunately, both fall short. The only worthwhile text was the introduction by Hubert de Givenchy.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Audrey style.......2005-11-16

I think Audrey Hepburn will be eternally remembered not only as one of the kindest and most generous women that has ever volunteered for Unicef, but to us women as a timeless, most graceful role model of style. She's the perfect embodiment of the adagio that in elegance less is more. Her streamlined, understated style that yet made one of the biggest statements in fashion history continues to be an inspiration to us women of the 21st century despite the forty years that separate us from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Clarke Keogh's book captures Audrey's spirit like no other. It is beautifully illustrated and there are contributions from Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren or Gregory Peck, among other people who generously share with us souvenirs of this angel of grace that they had the chance to meet in person. Her wardrobe and makeup are meticulously reviewed and this book will prove an invaluable tool and source of inspiration for all those women who want to bring more elegance and refinement into their lives. One of the best assets in your style bookcase and one that you will gladly pass down to generations of graceful women to come.

2 out of 5 stars the pictures are wonderful, the writing horrible.......2005-10-16

If they reprinted this without any words, it would get 5 stars.

Random examples of the writing:

"'Oh, they were fated to meet,' says Connie, curiously choosing the exact same words used to describe Audrey's friendship with Givenchy." (Like OMG! Someone said Audrey was _fated_ to meet Givenchy! And someone else said she was _fated_ to meet another person!)

"... she intones with the well-bred vowels of a Farmington girl, with some of her old boss, Diana Vreeland, thrown in for emphasis."

Pamela Clarke Keogh comes off like an untalented high school student in a creative writing class. You know the sort, under the impression that bludgeoning the reader with random vignettes and a morass of clauses is "descriptive."

And don't get me started on the over-the-top hagiographic nature of this book. Look, I love Audrey as much as the next person. Probably more. But how many quotes like "and she couldn't have been sweeter! So gracious! Beyond gracious! Heavenly!" do we need? There's such a thing as praising so much it becomes meaningless.

4 out of 5 stars The photos are superb, AND..........2005-01-10

It's putting the quirky details together that makes this book more revealing than the standard saccharin drenched puff piece.

For example, Hepburn is quoted as saying that she wears a size 8 1/2 shoe, while the author clearly states later in the book that Hepburn wore a size ten.

Her mother's quotes, if accurate, provide convincing evidence that the Baroness Von Heemstra was more than a little jealous of her far more beautiful daughter.

The author's claim that Audrey "didn't eat during times of stress" directly contradicts close friends Audrey Wilder and Doris Brynner, who claimed that Hepburn loved to eat. As for her staying so thin due to malnutrition that "permanently altered her metabolism", this is unlikely. According to the author, Hepburn speaks of gaining twenty pounds early in her career. Other bios confirm this. Perhaps in later years Hepburn simply watched what she ate.

According to the author, Hepburn washed her hair every four or five days. She SMOKED. Whew, draw your OWN conclusions about that one!

I've found Robert Wolders a bit creepy ever since I read about him in "Queenie", a superb biography of Merle Oberon. From Merle to Audrey to Shirlee Fonda; this guy clearly has a THING for wealthy, older glamour girls. He's always described as an actor/businessman. Hmmmmmmm.

An additional strength of this book is its focus on her personal fashion philosophy--not just her association with Givenchy.

Audrey Hepburn is my absolute favorite and always will be. She had many lessons to teach; not only about beauty and elegance, but also about tolerance, grace and kindness. No star of today can compare.

PS-I'm just tucking into the Barry Paris book, which is FAR more in depth. I recommend following Audrey Style with this one if you haven't already read it.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect book about a perfect lady.......2004-06-08

I really like this book-it really shows what an absolutely beautiful lady she was-she certainly was very sensual and sexy. She knew how to project herself without going overboard-
the lady had class and it really showed. There aren't any actresses like Audrey anymore-I really miss her.

I highly recommend getting this book.

Book Description

At the Academy Awards, the answer to who wore what matters just as much as who won what. Focusing on the actresses nominated for Oscars and a few seminal presenters, Made for Each Other traces the fashion trends of the widely watched Oscar ceremony. From the splendor of Vivien Leigh to the spare war-era chic of Ingrid Bergman, from the arresting glamor of Marlene Dietrich to Barbra Streisand’s daring sequined Arnold Scaasi pantsuit, Bronwyn Cosgrave delivers a revealing account of the entertainers who have helped shape the look of the Academy Awards and the international couturiers and behind-the-scenes fashion players on whom they’ve relied. Delving deep into the partnerships that have defined Oscar fashion—Claudette Colbert and Travis Banton; Grace Kelly and Edith Head; Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy; Elizabeth Taylor and Helen Rose; Liza Minelli and Halston; Cher and Bob Mackie; Jodie Foster and Georgio Armani; Nicole Kidman and John Galliano; Hilary Swank and Randolph Duke—Cosgrave demonstrates that from the beginning fashion was as integral to Oscar night as the films it celebrated. In a package befitting the glamorous subject, Made for Each Other includes previously unseen sketches of Oscar dresses by legendary couturiers, rare vintage photographs, and fashion illustrations of key dresses created especially for this book. For fashionistas and film buffs alike, Made for Each Other is a must have for anyone interested in this perfect pairing.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating account of Oscars fashion.......2007-03-20

I bought this book assuming it was sort of a glossy, coffee table photography book. Imagine my surprise when it came and I realized there was more text than photos! This turned out to be a good thing, though, as the book is a fascinating, almost scholarly anthropological account of Academy Awards fashion. You'll find yourself being amazed at not only the hoops the designers jump through to please the actresses, but at the level of minutae and detail that goes into designing (and then sewing) a dress that will be viewed by literally billions of people. There are hair-raising stories of dresses gone wrong, a good, long look at the vintage gowns some actresses have chosen to wear, and a lot of information on the actual construction of these unique gowns. It's well worth it for the Oscars aficionado.

3 out of 5 stars AND THE NOMINEES ARE..............2007-03-15

Since its inception in 1929 the hyped and hallowed Oscar ceremony has been as much about fashions as it has been about films. Who is wearing what and by whom as she promenades down the red carpet? Wonder just how many of us would rather look at the dresses than the presentations. One who definitely has her eye on the gowns is Bronwyn Cosgrave.

A former editor for British Vogue Cosgrove covered the Academy Awards for the BBC and authored Costume and Fashion: A Complete History. She now offers another complete history, this time of the garb chosen by both presenters and nominees for Hollywood's biggest night.

We learn that the first actress Academy Award winner was Janet Gaynor who "Waltzed wide-eyed in her dress that stopped short on her knee." Undoubtedly a far cry from the sparkling provocative number designed by Bob Mackie for Cher. Mackie, sometimes called "the sultan of sequins" or the "rajah of rhinestones" was a bit concerned about the outre appearance that Cher had requested, even to asking "Don't you think this is kind of upstaging the person you are giving the award to?" As the world now knows, she was determined to "let them see that everything still looks good."

Obviously, looking good is what it's all about. Marlene Dietrich caused quite a furor in 1951 when she strolled on stage in a Christian Dior creation that looked "Airbrushed on."

The ceremony is also about payoff - in 2003 Nicole Kidman struck a deal with Chanel for seven million. Her contractual obligations included the wearing of gowns by Chanel's chief designer Karl Lagerfeld to gala events, such as the Oscars.

Richly illustrated, gossipy and unputdownable "Made For Each Other" gives us an insiders ear and eye to haute Hollywood. The 3-star rating is due to the lack of proper editing.

This book is very weak; it is poorly written and badly (if at all) copy edited.
I would not recommend this for anyone who is used to reading well written, grammatically
clean, well researched work. It is an infuriating and exhausting read because of
all the typos and all the sentences that just do not make any sense.
It makes me wonder about the quality of the research and anecdotal comments.
It is shocking that it was published and internationally distributed.

4 out of 5 stars A good read but full of typos.......2007-02-28

I agree with a previous review that this book would have benefited from a thorough editing. Michael Kors for Celine designed Rene Russo's costumes in The Thomas Crowne Affair, not Randolph Duke. Gwyneth Paltrow won in 1999, not 1991. Hogs and Heifers, where Julia Roberts danced on the bar and left her bra nailed to the ceiling is in the Meatpacking District, not Tribeca. Nothing too serious, but irritating nonetheless. There are some great stories told here and the later part of the book that deals with the jockeying for position of designers to dress particular actresses is fascinating. But where are some of the more famous Oscar flops and hits? Kim Bassinger's self-designed dress. Demi Moore's hot pants? Halley Berry's Reem Acra? Kate Winset's huge necklace after Titanic? Uma's milkmaid dress? Another 30 pages would have been appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars Made For Everyone.......2007-02-25

Wow! This book is such a great a read! Did you know that Miuccia Prada did not design Una Thurman's Prada Oscar dress? That Bette Davies picked up her Best Actress Oscar in an old film costume? That Louise Rainer wore her nightgown to the ceremony? The revelations just keep on coming. Bronwyn Cosgrave's masterpiece charts the secret history of all the major Oscar dresses we all love and remember. This book really has to become the difinative volume on the subject. It's fantastically gossipy and wondefully informative, a real joy to read. I could not put it down!

The pictures and illustrations are stunning. Cosgrave has tracked down many never before published sketches froma range of designers from Dior to Dolce & Gabbana. This really is made for anyone who loves both film and fashion!

1 out of 5 stars Really disappointed.......2005-05-07

This book is lame. It's black and white drawings are sloppy and they don't instruct. There is little or no instructions
This book is way over priced. Stay away from it.

1 out of 5 stars 50 bucks? You have to be kidding!.......2003-12-17

I bought this book as a gift. I was stupid enough to throw away the return slip before I realized what I bought. This is a flimsy black and white book that does not show much of any detail. There is nothing from China and Japan and maybe one exaple for every 250 years of history. There are even blank pages throughout the book for no reason. I am still going to give the book because I have nothing else to give but I know the person will be thinking that I"m a cheapskate and will never guess in a million years that I actually spent 50 bucks. I feel like I've been robbed. The reviewer that was the reason I bought the book has obviously only seen one or two books in his/her life.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2000-06-30

As someone who has "fallen in" to costume design, I was hoping that this would be a great reference that would help me to get my ideas across to my director, but it has done little more than show how to proportion the male and female figures correctly. I was dissapointed in the lack of technical information about drawing fabrics on the human figure. Instead of technique, it gives a very brief overview of what changed in the line of the garments and has a half silhouette on the side of the page to show how the figure changed from period to period. There are several fashion history books availible that have much better overviews and illustrations. Only a few examples on four pages are given for each period.

Book Description

At thirty, beauty icon Kimora Lee Simmons is the mistress of her own empire of lifestyle brands, mother to two young daughters, and a glamorous staple of the social circuit. Now, in this uplifting and inspiring book, Simmons spills her secrets of how women can use their smarts to build a rich and satisfying life full of success, fun, and, yes, a bit of blinding bling–the Fabulosity that every woman deserves.

Simmons explains how to balance feminine, stop–them–in–their–tracks glamour with sign–on–the–dotted–line business power; how to get past barriers that exist because of gender, race, or age; how to find a marriageable man who'll support your biggest dreams (while keeping other women at bay); and how to have the most fun of your life while doing it! She gives hundreds of insider tips on fashion, beauty, home decorating, and socializing and explains how she succeeded in business with little formal experience, building a $70 million business out of a T–shirt.

Packed with anecdotes and first–person experiences from the catwalks of Paris to P. Diddy's parties, Fabulosity takes readers behind the scenes of this diva's diverse, action–packed life and offers insights on how any woman can channel her own "high–profile personality" and creative power, no matter what her own goals may be.

3 out of 5 stars Kimora... I expected this to be fabulous!.......2007-06-27

This was not a bad book. A lot of it was good, HOWEVER...
If I read one more generic "you go girl!", "unleash your inner diva/goddess!" I will jump off a cliff. I could read those any time, so when I buy a book from someone as glam as Kimora, you better believe I am expecting to hear details on how she remains so fab. What products does she use? What are her real thoughts and beauty secrets? How does she get so confident? This book was WAY too vanilla. It was as if she was trying not to offend anyone and was too afraid to write what she really thought. Example: Any time Kimora writes something like "Walk into a room like you own the damn place"- she will then take away from that statement and immediately follow it with "I am not saying be too overly cocky, I am just saying to be positive and confident." I wanted to hear her real thoughts and it was clear she was either too afraid to write them or advised not to write them, probably so she wouldn't affect her business in a negative way. Maybe she will put out a better book when she is through with Baby Phat. Kimora, I love you girl, but this was not quite fabulous enough.

4 out of 5 stars A suprisingly good read.......2007-06-01

I will start out by saying I wasn't a huge fan of hers because she seemed snotty to me. But I read the reviews and saw it at walmart for $13 so I bought it. It was a fun read and very down to earth, yes she wears designer clothes and has a big house but there is no reason to be mad at her about it. I appreciated reading an inspirational book written by someone from my own generation. I read a lot of success books and they are usually from older white men, sometimes black and sometimes asian but all older men.
I read the book in about a week and I am glad I did. She was a normal girl that found success in something she loves.

3 out of 5 stars Sassy, but probably for younger women.......2007-05-23

I wish I had read this book in my late teens. So many life lessons about confidence, getting ahead, and other power moves that Kimora touches on in the book, I had to learn the hard way. Her book is a straight from the hip book of advice and anecdotes that are fun to read. For those just starting to look for their path in life, especially those who look up to Kimora, it's an inspiring read. For those who are a little farther along in life, it can still be a reminder of the sexy inner confidence we must maintain.

Kimora's personality is over the top, and that personality exudes through the book. Whether or not it works for you is up to your taste. Personally, I liked the no-nonsense approach.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book describing famous Fashion (movie) Designers up to 1988.......2007-07-27

Good book! Lots of black-n-white photos of famous movie stars wearing wonderful designer fashions!

This book was originally written in 1988,thus,the 157 famous Hollywood Fashion Designers listed in this book are all here --- from the very beginning of Hollywood's Fashion movie Era , and then all the way up to 1988.

(NOTE: The reason the copyright on this book is 1991, is because the author added an information page in 1991. However, this book was really written in the 1980's).

Anyhow, this book lists all the Academy Award Fashion winners and also all British Award Fashion winners (in regards to Hollywood FASHIONS), from the late 1800's up until 1988!

4 out of 5 stars Costume Design in the Movies: An Illustrated Guide to the Work of 157 Great Designers.......2007-05-12

Excellent reference book with biographies of the most famous designers at the different studios. Nominations and Academy Awards are also referenced. There is an index that makes it easy to look up a film and find out who designed the costumes. I use it frequently. In some cases more than one designer worked on the same film. There are photographs of the designers and also their designs, however, I would like to see even more photographs...especially for the period 1930 through 1970. I would rate this book 4.5. It is also a good value for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Costume Design in the Movies: An illistrated guide to the work of 157 great designers.......2006-07-22

I love fashion & many great designs were done by the designers for the old movie studios. It was interesting reading about how designers came up with ideas of an outfit to cover flaws or accent a movie star (i.e. Barbara Stanwycks low butt, Crawfords shoulder pads).

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book For Classic Movie Lovers.......2005-09-09

One of my favorite things about watching classic films is seeing all the amazing fashions! This book is a great collection of photos of classic stars wearing classic costumes. Lots of stars are in here including Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, Carole Landis, Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, and Irene Dunne. You will learn who designed each outfit and there is a little biographical information about the designers too.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fabulous!.......2001-12-20

I am a costume designer and have had this book in my research collection for about 10 years. It is one of my top favorites. I have turned to this book for inspiration countless times. They just don't make clothing like this anymore! The hair and makeup styles are also well represented.

Book Description

From the moment he arrived at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Gilbert Adrian established himself as a Hollywood fashion force. Believing that costume can mirror a character's mood, he transformed his leading ladies into icons of style: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, and many others relied on Adrian to help them interpret their roles and make them glamorous.

The result of 10 years of research, including exclusive celebrity interviews and access to the studio's files, this lovingly assembled, lavishly illustrated volume is the first to trace Adrian's incredible career at MGM and his influence on American fashion.

Featuring pristine duotone photographs-many never before published-from classics such as Grand Hotel, Queen Christina, The Women, and The Philadelphia Story, as well as costume sketches and a step-by-step rendering of a dress for Garbo, the book is as breathtaking as an Adrian gown.
183 illustrations, 174 in duotone, 9 in full color, 208 pages, 9 x 113/4"

4 out of 5 stars I WISH IT WERE THE WAY IT WAS.......2006-08-19

The entire aim of fashion has changed so much since the days of Adrian. Nowadays, one dresses to shock. And one had better be young, because older people in these ridiculous frocks look like trailer trash. In fact, the aim of the young appears to be the look of total dissipation, ignorance, and rebellion. Not so in days gone by, when the desire was not to shock but to be beautiful, perfect, elegant, and "done up" -- anything but poor and wasted. This book is a gives us a picture of an ethos that was. We should all be grateful to have a reminder of it; we should all be disappointed at what eventually came after it.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-07-26

this book has wonderful black and white pictures of costumes from 1920's to 1940's, which are worn by some of the most famous movie-stars of the time. it is also is very interesting just to read.i would totaly recomend it :-)

After a late night of TV-watching, I stumbled across Norma Shearer in "Strangers May Kiss." I could not believe this movie was made in 1931, her outfits were red-carpet ready for today. A quick search led me to discover the masterful designer behind it all: Gilbert Adrian. This book showcases with detail all his incredible work on costuming and creating visual direction for films. The pictures are a fantastic reference and the stories behind the scenes with movie stars are of interest. Any aspiring fashion designer would do well to add this book to their library.
