Book Description

Model, film star, socialite, friend, lover, addict, Edie Sedgwick was the first "it" girl of the Andy Warhol Factory scene and later muse to Bob Dylan. The arc of Edie's life traced the rise and fall of the 1960s from idyllic experimentation to dissolute recklessness. After being toasted by the whole of New York City, Edie died alone of a drug overdose in California at the age of 28. David Weisman (with John Palmer) filmed Edie for the last five years of her life in his cult film Ciao! Manhattan. When he recently uncovered lost footage of Edie, David was inspired to create Edie: Girl on Fire, a book and a documentary film that explores Edie's true story. He and coauthor Melissa Painter have tracked down and interviewed many of Edie Sedgwick's surviving intimates, including Danny Fields, Baby Jane Holzer, and Ultra Violet. They also unearthed hundreds of never-before-published photos portraits, professional ad shoots, and heartbreaking snapshots of the girl who won New York's heart and nearly burned down the Chelsea hotel. The book also features a CD with Edie's last interview ever, a riveting account of a rollercoaster life. Sure to be seen as a rebuttal to Hollywood's highly fictionalized film Factory Girl (coming this fall), Edie: Girl on Fire creates an insightful and startling portrait of a woman that nobody quite knew.

5 out of 5 stars Superstar Edie!.......2007-05-13

I adored it...full of photo's I'd never seen before of Edie...new quotes, etc. Really gave me insight into her whole vibe & electricity. major fun! and it comes with a great CD with an interview.

5 out of 5 stars The Girl Is On Fire.......2007-04-23

Edie: Girl On Fire is chalked full of rare pictures and new commentary from the people who knew Edie the best, her husband, friends & family. The co-author of the book, David Weisman, not only shares never-before-seen pictures of Edie but, also marvels at the Edie obsession some 36 years after her death. Weisman & Painter do an excellent job of portraying the real Edie through pictures & stories shared by Edie's family & friends. They don't romanticize Edie as being an victim. In fact, they show that Edie was just like the rest of us. A flawed human being who was trying to find a place in the world during a turbulent time period. Edie's flaws are not glossed over or explained away. Instead, they show what a disturbed and lost young woman she was. Weisman himself knew Edie personally for years. Weisman saw Edie at her zenith and watched her fall apart and ultimately lose her life because of her own addictions & obsessions.

One of the best parts of the book is the pictures. After years of seeing the same Edie pictures over & over, there are finally pages & pages of glorious "new" pictures including scrapped "Life" magazine photoshoots and newspapers covering one of the many fires that Edie started at various hotels due to her speed usage. Another awesome part is the cd of audio interviews Edie conducted towards the end of her life for what would be her last movie "Ciao! Manhattan!" (made by co-author Weisman). Edie talks about her many drug trips and her time at the Factory. She's candid, well spoken and heartbreaking. When listening to this cd of Edie's voice and looking at the pictures, you almost want the ending to change. You want Edie to pull through all this garbage and rise from the ashes like a phoenix. Just like any story, the ending never changes and there's really no happily ever after.

4 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire Review.......2007-03-25

The book is filled with many great photos of Edie. Many I've never seen before. The text if fine, mostly quotes from many different people. I think I would have given this book a 5 if it contained more of a narrative type of text vs. many quotes.

5 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire.......2007-03-21

This book is excellent. The pictures really tell the story of
Edie Sedgwick, '60's Warhol groupie, actress, model who lived a "roller coaster" life. Comments by those who knew her make the tale of her life
interesting & real.

5 out of 5 stars Edie:Girl on Fire!.......2007-03-18

Hot coffee table book with lots of rare Edie interviews & photos! A must for all Edie fans & a great companion to the Ciao Manhattan DVD! Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Ah, yes, grid reference............2004-05-26

I received this book as part of a group of textbooks received for my costume design course at FIDM. I used a nice, red, ballpoint pen (this would've been 1990, y'know, before acid/lignin-free - and especially non-bleeding - pens were freely available) to mark out my ten-grid grid. Anyway, I used the Phoenix (Elizabethan or Jacobean) corset pattern to make one of my projects, and it turned out beautifully (if only it still fit me!). I also drafted a Tudor corset from one of the patterns, and we did a panier petticoat from this text as well.

You might say the book is well-loved. Really, really, well-loved.

Which, I would think, goes far in stating how useful this book is, and how much information, especially in the form of period patterns, is available within. I couldn't have done without it, and I don't think anyone else should have to.

4 out of 5 stars very useful book.......2001-08-09

When I look at the few period costumes I made (I'm only a beginner), I really think this book helped me to improve my cutting abilities, sewing tips and above all, the authentic period feeling when the garment is worn and moves on stage. Jean Hunnisett tells you what you're expecting to find at the end of your work and helps you to understand the historical background of period costume. This is the only book which explains in detail the draping method over a corset and guides you step-by-step in the construction of the costume but it is sometimes a bit confusing in her sewing instructions and she gives the impression there's only one way to realize something (ex: 18th century corset). Anyway, I learned a lot and she's a very good teacher. (Don't be tempted to enlarge her scaled patterns,it doesn't work very well( too many corrections) and it's easier to make your own patterns by the flat or by draping.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have for theatrical designers!.......2000-01-07

This is a superb tool for any theatrical designer/period pattern maker! Jean Hunnisett's experience with the BBC is unmatched and this book is the standard of perfection. It's a clearly defined guide for the correct shape and cut of any era of costume, whether it be Tudor or Georgian. The information and tips that she 'unlocks' will give you a total sense of what each garment should look like in complete detail, with outstanding illustrations and descriptions, from the draping process, fitting, constructing, and trimming. Jean Hunnisett is a master in her craft, and her attention to period accuracy is clearly shown in all three books.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the serious costumer.......1998-09-22

Hunniset gives scale patterns of garments that are functional and provide a period sillhouette from the foundation up. The scale is something you have to be careful with, however, because different patterns are drawn on different scales. This book is for the experienced sewer and should be considered a technical manual rather than a research resource but I have not found its equal in clarity, correctness and completeness. I reccomend the whole set!

Book Description

At thirty, beauty icon Kimora Lee Simmons is the mistress of her own empire of lifestyle brands, mother to two young daughters, and a glamorous staple of the social circuit. Now, in this uplifting and inspiring book, Simmons spills her secrets of how women can use their smarts to build a rich and satisfying life full of success, fun, and, yes, a bit of blinding bling–the Fabulosity that every woman deserves.

She gives hundreds of insider tips on fashion, beauty, home decorating, and socializing and explains how she succeeded in business with little formal experience, building a $70 million business out of a T–shirt.

Packed with anecdotes and first–person experiences from the catwalks of Paris to P. Diddy's parties, Fabulosity takes readers behind the scenes of this diva's diverse, action–packed life and offers insights on how any woman can channel her own "high–profile personality" and creative power, no matter what her own goals may be.

3 out of 5 stars Kimora... I expected this to be fabulous!.......2007-06-27

This was not a bad book. A lot of it was good, HOWEVER...
If I read one more generic "you go girl!", "unleash your inner diva/goddess!" I will jump off a cliff. I could read those any time, so when I buy a book from someone as glam as Kimora, you better believe I am expecting to hear details on how she remains so fab. What products does she use? What are her real thoughts and beauty secrets? How does she get so confident? This book was WAY too vanilla. It was as if she was trying not to offend anyone and was too afraid to write what she really thought. Example: Any time Kimora writes something like "Walk into a room like you own the damn place"- she will then take away from that statement and immediately follow it with "I am not saying be too overly cocky, I am just saying to be positive and confident." I wanted to hear her real thoughts and it was clear she was either too afraid to write them or advised not to write them, probably so she wouldn't affect her business in a negative way. Maybe she will put out a better book when she is through with Baby Phat. Kimora, I love you girl, but this was not quite fabulous enough.

4 out of 5 stars A suprisingly good read.......2007-06-01

I will start out by saying I wasn't a huge fan of hers because she seemed snotty to me. But I read the reviews and saw it at walmart for $13 so I bought it. It was a fun read and very down to earth, yes she wears designer clothes and has a big house but there is no reason to be mad at her about it. I appreciated reading an inspirational book written by someone from my own generation. I read a lot of success books and they are usually from older white men, sometimes black and sometimes asian but all older men.
I read the book in about a week and I am glad I did. She was a normal girl that found success in something she loves.

3 out of 5 stars Sassy, but probably for younger women.......2007-05-23

I wish I had read this book in my late teens. So many life lessons about confidence, getting ahead, and other power moves that Kimora touches on in the book, I had to learn the hard way. Her book is a straight from the hip book of advice and anecdotes that are fun to read. For those just starting to look for their path in life, especially those who look up to Kimora, it's an inspiring read. For those who are a little farther along in life, it can still be a reminder of the sexy inner confidence we must maintain.

Kimora's personality is over the top, and that personality exudes through the book. Whether or not it works for you is up to your taste. Personally, I liked the no-nonsense approach.

Book Description

Chic, sexy, and sophisticated, Femme Fatale pays tribute to a century of feminine glamour. Invoking not only iconic beauties like Jean Harlow, Brigitte Bardot, and Marilyn Monroe but also the looks that defined each decade from the 1900s to the new millennium, celebrity stylist Serge Normant crafts clothes, setting, hair, and makeup to transform today's most beautiful women. He re-creates Julia Roberts as Louise Brooks, and Cindy Crawford as a forties glamour goddess, a savvy paparazzi-stalked nineties superstar, and a twenties ingenue. Elizabeth Hurley frolics as a flower child and vamps as Mata Hari. Isabella Rossellini is a curvaceous fifties pinup and an eighties punk. And Britney Spears exudes all the poise of Grace Kelly.

This lavish exploration of fashion history, imagination, and stylish beauty carries with it Bridget Foley's cultural survey of each decade—from social and political issues to art movements and key style makers. Beauty, fashion, celebrity, and photography mavens will all love Femme Fatale—and so will every woman who has ever fantasized about looking like a star.

3 out of 5 stars Chic but not fatal........2003-10-28

This book presents beautiful pictures of famous and enticing modern women: but to call them "femmes fatales" would be to mischaracterize them.

By definition, the term "femmes fatales" was coined to gorgeous women whose actions were detrimental or harmful to their men or partners. Thus, in real life a woman could be gorgeous without being fatal, or vice versa, she could be fatal without being exceptionally gorgeous. Cleopatra was one such woman, who although not extraordinarily beautiful, was able to charm two Roman generals and to lead them to their downfall.

Although hairstyle was an important component of a woman's appearance, it was certainly not the unique feature of a person. Her eyes, smile, demeanor, sleek appearance, and clothing also played important roles. Therefore, to reduce a woman's character to her hairdo, as the hairstylist-author had suggested, was to overly simplify the matter.

The women photographed in the book were certainly "chic," although not necessarily "fatal."

1 out of 5 stars dissapointing.......2003-05-10

Because of the title The Femme Fatale, Famous Beauties Then and Now, I was expecting a sort of photographic history book. I would be very interested in seeing how the image of a Femme Fatale has changed over the years, from the glamourous pencil browed vixens of the 1920's to the much more volupt modern beauties. (Think pulp fiction novel cover vs. Catherine Zeta Jones) I would have liked to read up on how even though what is considered beautiful (and dangerous) has changed, the character of the Femme Fatale predominates our culture, in literature and film.
I really got the wrong book. Instead of what I was expecting, this book features celebrities made over to appear like they would in different time periods, and the photos are high quality, oversized and printed on slick glossy paper. Some of the transformations are very well done (the girl on the front cover is Julia Roberts, believe it or not) So the book is not without merit, but they could have done a lot more.
If I wanted to see pictures of Britney Spears, I'd just read People magazine.

5 out of 5 stars I just HAD to have it!.......2002-10-28

I have been a fetish model for almost two years, and a close photographer friend and myself are kicking off a new project which showcases high end fetish photographs. While my husband was searching for a poetry book in a Barnes and Nobles store, I snuck to the photography section to see if I could be inspired for this new peoject. My eye fell on this book immediately. I looked at no other book! The photographs are simply too beautiful for words, and I was heartbroken by the cover price... Reluctantly, I put it back on the shelf. When I came home however, I searched your site immediately and found a used copy in mint condition .... Obviously, I was nothing less than thrilled!

This book is based on the photography of hair, and showcases original photographs from the 1800's as samples. Serge Normant then re-creates these by using well known models and celebraties of today, dressing them in period clothing, changing their looks dramatically.

If you are a hairdresser, model, or photographer, you MUST own this book!

4 out of 5 stars Great Idea, mediocre execution.......2002-03-08

Much, if not all this material has been published elsewhere, so you may have seen it. However, it has not been presented together organized around the interesting concept that Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Hurley, Susan Sarandon, Britney Spears and a host of beautiful women are paying homage to women of a previous age. (Yes, that Britney Spears).

In an interview with a French magazine, the photographer described himself as awed or intimidated when Susan Sarandon showed up. He only relaxed when she took charge and he just responded to what he saw. The mutual respect shown by the professionals on both sides of the camera is what makes these images good.

This is not just a catalog of beatiful pictures of contemporary icons playing dress up. If it is authentic it makes a convincing statement about the power and stature of these famous modern women and a lot of not so famous all around us.

If you know a young woman who wants to be in the next book like this, show it to her. I have handed it to several young women I've photographed recently. "Oh, my God! Britney Spears is beautiful." "That can't be Claudia Schiffer." "Elizabeth Hurley scares me!" Isabella Rossellini as Betty Page is the show stopper, however.

The photography is as good as it gets, but the material added to hang it all together weakens the book. Some of it is completely contrived and bogus.

Next time let the women and the photographer do their work and let the readers draw the conclusions. Meanwhile a lot of wannabe photographers and young models have some catching up to do.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Michael Thompson........2002-02-08

Serge Normant may have been the creator of the styles pictured within, but it's the aritisty of the photographer Michael Thompson that's truly responsible for the incredible images in this book. Thompson is, perhaps, the most talented of current fashion photographers, but he's also the most overlooked by all but those "in the industry." He's classic, and contemporary, and as versatile as Meisel or Demarchelier. He may not be as well known as his contemporaries, but that's because he lives a quiet life in Pennsylvania, and stays out of the limelight.

I'm looking forward to a massive collection of Michael's photographs, a 'Part One' retrospective, but i don't believe it's forthcoming. Doesn't seem to be his style.

Book Description

The international supermodel and actor details his rise to fame in the fashion world and reveals for the first time the truth about his stormy, passionate, and now famous relationship with Carolyn Bessette.

This is the story of a small–town kid who moved to the big city, fell in love with a beautiful, mysterious woman, and found himself in competition with the most eligible bachelor in the world, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Now, for the first time, Michael Bergin reveals the truth behind a life lived in the limelight and a relationship shrouded in secrecy. From his early days growing up in a small blue–collar Connecticut town, to his meteoric rise as fashion icon and television star, to the passion he shared with the enigmatic and complex Carolyn Bessette, this is an inside look at the world of beauty, power, and celebrity.

In 1992, Michael and Carolyn met in a bar in New York City. She was unlike any woman he had ever known–sophisticated, successful, with bewitching charm and grace. An intensely passionate relationship was born. Not long after, Michael landed the coveted Calvin Klein underwear campaign, and his career took off. The future looked bright, and Carolyn and Michael seemed destined for a long and happy life together.

But it was not to be. Four years later Michael was an international fashion icon and Carolyn was Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr.–however, the story doesn't end there. This is the truth about their lives, a tale full of warmth, humour, heartbreak, and tragedy.

Above all, The Other Man is a testament to the enduring power of love and a story about the painful choices we make with our all–too–human hearts.

3 out of 5 stars When a Man Loves a Woman....................2007-07-16

This book, to me, was not all that bad. I get tickled by the people who said "Well, Michael Bergin sure isn't a writer." No joke - he is a model.
I found this book refreshing in the fact that it was about a man pining after a woman. How often do you see that? All in all, I didnt think his writing was all that bad either. This book focuses on the relationship between Calvin Klein model Michael Bergin, and Carolyn Bessette (who ended up marrying John Kennedy, Jr, which eventually resulted in her untimely death since he was not as experienced at flying as he thought he was). There are parts of this book that are gut-wrenching and you can almost feel Bergin's pain as you read about how Bessette worked him like a "marionette", pulling his strings...pushing him away only to eventually pull him back closer. Although he says the book was to defend her, it just doesn't leave a very good image of her (3 abortions later) and bouncing between her husband's bed and her lovers bed.
If this book is true, I feel bad for Carolyn who obviously was looking for the happiness I dont think she ever found......and never will.

5 out of 5 stars me, carolyn, and john f. kennedy.......2007-05-18

i bought this book about two years ago i never got to it until few weeks ago, and once i started i jusy could`nt put the book down not until i was forced by time.
the author is honest, and his heart and feeling are right there you can actually feel it. whoever claims tyhis is a poorly written book, i guess he never read anything written with a full heart (for example: "a royal duty" by paul burrell, the late princess diana`s butler).

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-14

I usually don't read this type of book, but did purchase it and set it aside. I must admit that it was very interesting, although poorly written. For those who wrote reviews decrying his disloyalty, well, she wasn't that loyal either. Her name was CAROLYN not CAROLINE, Caroline is JFK, Jr's sister. I have read All that Remains, by Carol DeFalco Radziwill, and the personality that she describes Carolyn to have had is similar to Michael's description. I have never heard of him and really don't care what he has done to make a living. I believe Carolyn was neurotic and strange in many ways. She, also, must have had a very attractive side to her. I never saw her as "beautiful", but, obviously, others did. Including the author. It reads fast and it holds your attention. Certainly, not a must read, but entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Refreshing.......2006-07-12

Well, in reference to all of the people saying that Carolyn is not alive to defend herself-I didn't see too much in the book that really attacked her! It is evident to the last page that he was, and always will be, in awe of this woman(misguided as that may have been)! I don't see what all the fuss about her was, she was okay but not a supermodel or anything!! He really was in love with her! And that is sad, because if the account MB gave in this book about the mental torture he went through is true, then Carolyn was action-packed with issues. Anyone who has been in a relationship, or wanted to be in a relationship that ended up one-sided can attest to the mental torment you go through. This book is a horror story for those that have been there and done that. I just wonder if his poor wife is always living in the shadow of Carolyn, if he is always measuring her by the other woman because his obsession with Carolyn is probably still there. But anyway, this book is good because I really believe that this is how he thought the situation was. If it wasn't, he would try to make himself out to be much more macho. And about all the flings he had, sometimes when you are rebounding and hurt, you will do crazy things. I applaud his effort, and really liked this book.

5 out of 5 stars I commend him!.......2006-06-14

The Other Man is a great book and a quick read. You continue to read and want to know what else is going to happen. The book is quite entertaining, but also leaves you with a respectable and sincere feeling from both sides.

Michael Bergin allows you to feel his ups and downs with Caroline. I hold much compassion for him. He was in a controlling relationship due to feelings. Feelings are stronger than people can imagine. He does personify Caroline as being a control freak, but that was the way she was able to lead the double life she held. This relationship took on a life of its own due to her power. Michael allowed her to control him more than he thought. He should be proud for all of his accomplishments, and yes she had a lot to do with it. He needed molding and he allowed himself to get molded by her. That's what happens when you are young and learning. He learned from her and she learned from him. It is all part of a growing relationship, although it ended. Like she said everything good has to end. Impact is what she left behind.

Overall, I feel compassion and lots of sadness for Michael Bergin. He led a life of hope. Hope that he could be with his soul mate. He honestly had so much respect for her when in return she didn't realize what she had. Caroline toyed with many emotions and that is a hard thing to take. I commend Michael. It takes strength to write and tell your story. He put his heart down on the table, although it was after her death. I believe he did it in a way that showed true love. He never degraded her, but showed much respect to her.

Book Description

Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich-all were icons of beauty and glamour in 1930s Hollywood. Screen Style reveals the impact of celebrities like these on women filmgoers, looking beyond the surface of the films and fashions of the era-often described as forms of escapism from the difficult realities of the Depression-to show how Hollywood presented women with models for self-determination during a time of rapid social change. Revealing the public and cinematic fascination with the strong-willed women featured in so many movies-ambitious gold diggers, career-minded working girls, social climbers, dangerous androgynous females, and other exotics-Sarah Berry presents a lively look at films, fan magazines, and advertising of that time.

Sarah Berry writes on film, media, and cultural studies and designs interactive multimedia projects. She teaches film studies at Portland State University.

This survey of women's fashion issues in 1930s Hollywood provides a fine social history of 1930s film style, survey the impact of female celebrities on fashion and showing how Hollywood used actresses as models during a time of social change. Screen Style explores changes in fashion marketing approaches during the 1930s and is a recommended pick for students of fashion history.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to be a collector's item - Mick Jagger's ex spills all.......2002-08-22

I couldn't help wondering if Jerry Hall ever regretted writing this one, penned while she was still bonded with Mick Jagger. Was it ever used as "evidence" in her divorce trial? Did it return to haunt her?
Forgetting those questions, this book is just a fun romp for readers, as Jerry opens up and lets loose on her philosophy about how to handle men...including Mick, who Jerry admits was far than faithful. The picture section is a nostalgic trip through rock's early days and Jerry's younger years as a top model and crazy woman.
My advice? Grab a copy now while the price, high as it is, is within reach. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Jerry - WE NEED VOLUME 2!.......2000-07-05

What a fabulous read about the decadent 70's and early 80's high-roller scene. Read this book (LET AN IDIOT BORROW IT AND DIDN'T GET IT BACK! )in the early 80's and LOVED it...Read it for great info on Lothario Mick, and gorgeous Jerry. Jerry, you've had three more kids and lots of living in almost 20 years, WE NEED AN UPDATE!

5 out of 5 stars Jerry - Where's volume 2?.......2000-07-05

Love, love LOVE Jerry Hall! What a great chick with a great attitude. This book is fantastic reading for inside the decadent 70's scene, and private side of the fabulous MICK! Jerry, we need to know MORE - You have had THREE more kids since your last book, so please write another one!

5 out of 5 stars Time for Part 2.......2000-05-30

Read this book back in the early 80's and it changed my life. She's a daring and gutsy girl, with a disarming sweetness. It's time for part two of Jerry's great adventures!

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Rules!.......1999-12-21

Read this book when it first came out, and loved it. IMHO, Jerry was the coolest model in the 70's. Check out the pictures in Scavullo's beauty book from that time period - Jerry's awesome! I think it's time for volume 2 of Jerry's autobiography. Let's hear the real deal on you-know-who and why Jerry hung in there for all those years.

Book Description

From Annette Tapert, the coauthor of the popular The Power of Style, comes a book that is just as beautiful and entertaining but that redefines an attribute even more intangible. In word and image, it evokes a unique Hollywood era and eleven of its goddesses who lived, and left as their legacy, the Power of Glamour.

When the Glamour Era met the Golden Age of cinema, it cast a spell on a public beaten by the Depression and the threat of war. But the key ingredient in 1930s glamour was personality. Annette Tapert's movie-queen profiles, rich with fresh insights, reach beyond the star-making machinery, fan magazines, fashions, and cosmetics to the essence of each women: the carefully molded image of Gloria Swanson, who started it all . . . Marlene Dietrich's siren persona on and off screen . . . the "reverse glamour" of Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo. Their power--and that of Joan Crawford, Carole Lombard, Norma Shearer, Claudette Colbert, and the long-neglected Kay Francis, Dolores Del Rio, and Constance Bennett--lay in using style, wit, and guile to outsmart the studio system and enchant the world. In these pages we see how, veiled in intrigue and mystery, they brought glamour very close to its original meaning: witchcraft.

5 out of 5 stars Glamorous Ladies of the Golden Age.......2007-03-27

What a beautiful book! I originally paged thru this during a visit to my salon, and immediately ordered it online. The book profiles many of the most beautiful, glamorous actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age (1920s-1940s), and includes wonderful photos which show off their inimitible fashion sense, esp. Kay Francis, Constance Bennett, and Dolores Del Rio, all of whom are somewhat sadly forgotten today. An excellent book for anyone interested in Hollywood, glamour, and fashion history!

1 out of 5 stars Where Are The Real Glamour Queens????.......2004-10-29

The book literally is a book of only the 30's. If your intrigued by the other decades of hollywood glamour, dont even consider the book. The book sadly totally alienates the true heavy weights such as the queen of glamour Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, even Audrey Hepburn who didnt have overly done style but its subtlness was nice. All in all, if your really intrested in the 30's glamour, go for it, but if you want more than that look else where.

4 out of 5 stars Glamour and stardom galore.......2004-01-26

This gold and sepia book is gorgeous but the title is deceptive. It is a shame to use such a big word as "Glamour" and then narrow down the features to actresses of the decade of the thirties. I agree that all the stars presented, such as Constance Bennett, Joan Crawford, Katherine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson or Claudette Colbert do tipify glamour, but what about mega glamour stars such as Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly? Otherwise, this book is beautiful, lavishly illustrated and well researched.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2002-09-27

Let me begin by saying that, as a huge vintage film fan, any book that features chapters devoted to both Norma Shearer and Kay Francis between its covers is perfect in my opinion. So now that you know that I am not an impartial judge, I have to tell you this book is fabulous. Annette Tapert did not focus on the cliche glamourous women, she focuses on the often times forgotten glamour girls, such as the aforementioned Norma Shearer and Kay Francis, as well as Dolores Del Rio and Constance Bennett. The book has fabulous photographs and a detailed biography of each glamourous woman. And, glamourous they were! All of the women featured here have left their mark on film and fashion through the years and deserve to be recognized as icons of glamour!

5 out of 5 stars Excellentýawaiting a third entry!.......2002-01-31

I thoroughly enjoyed both of Miss Tapert's books, and hope that she is working on a third-perhaps on female writers who influenced style, such as Elinor Glyn, Jackie Susann and George Sand?

I was particularly pleased to see in this book actresses such as Constance Bennett and Kay Francis, who too often are overlooked. The only subject I might quibble with is Garbo, who was notoriously anti-style and anti-glamour in her private life. But that is a very small objection to a delightful and re-readable book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!.......2007-05-14

This is a great book for seamstresses with some experience(I think it would be too hard for beginners. It would be good if you have some comprehenesion on sizing(drafting patterns yourself for example)but that isn't even necessary.I think it would be easier though:)

Frances Grimble gives clear instructions for changing patterns to size and even to different body shapes(large bust, short back etc.
You do need to take some time for this, but well, you'll have an authentic pattern in your hands, how great is that?;)And there are so many in this book! I was having a very hard time finding real historical patterns in The Netherlands(so far found one french journal from 1902)and I feel like a kid in a candystore now.:)I <3 this book already.

You can make a complete outfit, from undergarments to overgarments.

If you have some sewing experience and you love this period it is really a great book!

Amazon's service is excellent too. It didn't take very long for the item to arrive(from US to the Netherlands)(with one step faster shipping, expidited?)it was even a lot faster then the estimated arrival time.

5 out of 5 stars Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1: Undergarments, Bodices, Skirts, Overskirts, Polonaises, and Day Dresses 1877-1882.......2006-08-16

This book is wonderful. I believe I own every book Frances Grimble has written and anxiously await more. The variety of patterns is amazing and allows the experienced sewer to create their own designs from various components, like sleeves and collars. This sure beats trying to decipher the patterns in an original 1890's issue of Harpers!

5 out of 5 stars as good as all the other Frances Grimble books.......2006-03-22

This book contains patterns for the following:
corsets, hoopskirts and bustles (some)
underclothing and negligee wear (quite a few)
day and evening skirts (only about four)
day bodices (quite a few)
evening bodices (some)
overskirts (some)
polonaises (some)
day dresses (quite a few)

some = around ten
quite a few = over 20

I would recommend this book for anyone who likes victorian costuming. It not only works as a pattern book, but as a source book, having lots of pictures you can use for reference. Even if you just look through it, it really can help you understand the styles of that era.

5 out of 5 stars What An Excellent Book!!.......2005-01-13

The pictures and descriptions within the book are an excellent reference if you are researching and intending on recreating one of these beautiful designs. Advanced knowledge of sewing skills is a must for those who wish to recreate these (definantly not for the novice sewer). Frances Grimble, you've done it again. Please keep them coming. I will buy every book you put out.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-09-29

There's just so MUCH material in this book--so many pictures and patterns and so many pages of hard-to-find information. Women's styles of the period were intricate, with separate bodices, overskirts, and skirts, or with polonaises (a bodice with the overskirt attached) and skirts. This book separates patterns for bodices, skirts, overskirts, and polonaises to mix and match however you want. It also gives patterns for whole dresses, but you can mix their components too.

There are far more patterns for EVERYTHING than I've ever seen anywhere else. There were many, many ways of cutting and draping an overskirt or a polonaise. In this book it's amazing to see fashion plates of overskirts that look similar in the plates, but the cut and drape shown by the pattern pieces is quite different. There are even 19 patterns for chemises.

This book will keep me busy for a long time!

4 out of 5 stars Excellant, if difficult.......2007-09-19

As a director this was an excellant resource book, however my seamstresses found it next to impossible to figure out the patterns. It would take someone quite comfortable in making patterns. The directions are there and could be worked out with enough effort and trial. Still, as a resource it's great and was quite useful. The designs and details alone are worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-08-07

Good book for creating fashions of the era .And the price for each pattern was a price I could not pass up.I love the patterns and clothes of days gone past and this is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars well up to Frances Grimble's high standards.......2006-03-22

This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1905 and 1907-1909.
It contains:
20 (patterns) from 1905
22 from 1907
21 from 1908
23 from 1909

This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, since it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it. Remember, this is mid-late edwardian.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pattern source.......2005-10-23

Being a costumer, I'm frustrated that there aren't enough "authentic" patterns, with the fine details that they had, being produced out there, except for the "Halloween-type" costumes. This is a great resource for patterns that have the look and period-correct construction techniques. Ms. Grimble has chosen some truly beautiful ones from real vintage patterns to include in her book. I haven't had a chance to learn how to scale the patterns up yet, but look forward to it.
