Book Description

Donna Leon's Commissario Guido Brunetti series grows more popular in America with the publication of every new novel. In this installment, Brunetti's hopes of a refreshing family holiday in the mountains are once again dashed when a gruesome discovery is made in Marghera—a body so badly beaten the face is completely unrecognizable. Brunetti searches Venice for someone who can identify the corpse, but he is met with a wall of silence. Then he receives a telephone call from a contact who promises some tantalizing information. And before the night is out, Brunetti is confronting yet another appalling, and apparently senseless, death.

5 out of 5 stars An Ironic Murder Mystery Triggers Probing Questions Leading to New Insights.......2007-09-04

With Dressed for Death (originally titled as The Anonymous Venetian), the Guido Brunetti mysteries reach their full power for the first time. As with Donna Leon's earlier books, Dressed for Death features a corpse that's prepared and deposited to create maximum confusion for the police. That tiny fragment of her style becomes a launching pad for much self-examination by readers about how others think and live, including transvestite "working women" and those who employ them.

The book offers two new aspects to the series that readers will also find rewarding: Vice-Questore Patta is knocked off his smug pedestal when his wife leaves him to live with a pornographer and Patta also hires the astonishingly capable Elletra Zorzi who makes the Brunetti series much more realistic in terms of portraying police procedures.

But this book could have been better titles as, "Vacation Lost." Brunetti is about to leave for two weeks away from stifling hot Venice for the mountains when a man dressed as a woman is found dead outside of an area where female ladies of the night normally operate. For reasons only known to Patta, Brunetti is assigned to lead the investigation in nearby Mestre. Although Brunetti promises to wind up the investigation as soon as possible, he knows that he's unlikely to be able to join his family. But dutiful to a fault, he proceeds to pursue a case that others want squelched.

The investigation takes Brunetti into the seamy world of those who sell their bodies to make a living . . . and where the police are seen as the enemy rather than as protectors. Brunetti finds himself out of his depth until his wife, Paola, asks some penetrating questions that shake Brunetti's self-absorption.

But watch carefully, there are unexpected events and people populating this book . . . and each unexpected aspect has meaning for the story.

Watch out for one more thing: This book may hook you on the series so that you won't be able to escape its appeal. I don't recall reading a third mystery in a series that's as good as this one.

Why? Venice makes the stories fascinating as you see behind the surface that the tourists experience. Brunetti is a fascinating, complex, and admirable character whom you will enjoy as a detective. His family life adds to the spice. The candid assessments of other members of the police also make for much good humor. The criminals in this case are people you'll be glad to see brought to justice. The methods will be equally intriguing. You'll also explore aspects of life you don't normally think about. As a result, Ms. Leon delivers more than you should expect from even a fine mystery.

Ciao!

5 out of 5 stars Another great read.......2007-04-25

All of Leon's Venice mysteries are great - they really give you a wonderful sense of place and also inform you about some areas around Venice.

I recommend reading the entire series if you are traveling to Venice.

5 out of 5 stars Dressed for Death.......2007-03-21

The most annoying thing about this book is that it is also available under the title The Anonymous Venetian. So be careful when purchasing the wonderful Donna Leon Books. A couple of them have been published under different names.

4 out of 5 stars Leon Tackles Tough Subjects.......2007-02-28

The air in Venice is stifling, but Leon's famous detective doesn't hesitate to dig into the most carefully guarded secrets of Italy's highest citizens to those struggling to survive as prostitutes. Without the support of his beloved family (they've gone on a well-deserved vacation without him) Brunetti doggedly follows a convoluted trail despite the loss of a fellow officer and an assortment of other personal and profesisonal obstacles. From the first scene behind the slaughterhouse, this book will show you both the beauty and grime of Venice. A terrific read.

5 out of 5 stars Dressed for Death.......2006-07-20

No good deed goes unpunished as Comissario Guido Brunetti learns as this plot unravels. Appearances can be deceiving but Brunetti is not fooled by first impressions and is able to put together the pieces of this puzzle aided by his secretary Signorina Elettra and trusted fellow officers.

Book Description

Ella Sarah may be little, but she has a BIG sense of style--and it isn't at all like that of her mother, father, and older sister. Yet they all want her to dress just like them! Ella Sarah will have none of it--and when her flamboyantly dressed friends arrive, it's clear that Ella Sarah's favorite outfit is just right for her.
Margaret Chodos-Irvine's spirited story will gently nudge young children toward independence--providing plenty of exuberant colors and patterns to identify along the way.

4 out of 5 stars This book really gets toddler attitudes!.......2007-06-10

This book seems to understand what 2 or 3 year olds are like quite well! They adore saying No, they have strong opinions and they don't like to be told what to do. Ella Sarah wakes up with an idea about the perfect clothes for the day, and she gets her way, and finds that her friends have dressed much like her. My daughter enjoys hearing this book quite often, but mostly for the cat that Ella Sarah holds a lot. That leads me to my only real quibble with this book. It's never quite clear if the cat is real or not, and I am quite sure my almost 3 year old thinks it is. But on one page, Ella tosses the cat across the room. Not to be oversensitive, but that bothers me a bit! It delights my daughter, and she has tried to do the same thing to our cats more than once (both before and after reading this, to be fair) but it seems to illustrate something else about the household shown here---Ella seems a little too in charge. Of course, it's all fiction, and I am probably overanalyzing here! If you have a little girl who picks out her own unusual clothing combination, this might be a real winner!

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-04-02

my girls love this book- so cute and enjoyable to read for parents too

5 out of 5 stars Great for children who love dress-up.......2006-03-13

My daughter (2 years old) really loves this book. It is fun, and has beautifully illustrated pages. The ending is surprising if you try to predict why Ella Sarah is getting dressed.

4 out of 5 stars lizzy loves it.......2005-08-01

My grandaughter has had color preference since birth. This book is among the "bed books" when she sleeps at MeMas'. Ella knows what she likes and sticks to her guns. The rest of the family has a different opinion - but honor hers. Ellas friends "get it too". Toddler validation. Who can argue?

5 out of 5 stars I love Ella Sarah!.......2004-11-17

I adore Ella Sarah. Other reviewers are right that Ella Sarah does throw a mild tantrum in the book. I personally think it's a great tool for teaching toddlers. Ella Sarah clearly expresses what she wants (a list my 2-year-old daughter knows by heart), and when she is not supported in her wishes by her family members, she goes ahead and dresses herself. I personally think it's a lot better when a toddler can list off exactly what she wants to wear, rather than throw a incomprehensible fit. I adore Ella Sarah (and my daughter does too), because she is an independent, communicative and creative little girl!

Book Description

Some skeletons just won't stay hidden.

No one knows that better than University of Georgia archaeologist Lindsay Chamberlain. Still, she is shocked when a skeleton dressed in its Sunday best falls out of a packing crate that had been stored in a kudzu-covered shed on her grandfather's farm for more than sixty years. When other crates are discovered, each containing a stash of valuable artifacts, Lindsay begins to wonder. Could her beloved grandfather, a prominent archaeologist, have been a thief, a looter-even a murderer?

As Lindsay struggles with these troubling questions, she helps a local private investigator locate the wooded grave of Shirley Foster, a missing faculty member. Lindsay is sucked into the investigation, which leads to more questions that answers. Why did Shirley Foster lie to the world about her life? Who wanted her dead?

Secrets and lies loom large in Lindsay's life, both professional and personal, as she struggles to find solutions to the mysteries. When artifacts disappear from the university and she and her students are threatened, the stakes are raised. With her job, her reputation, and her life on the line, Lindsay must find a thief and a killer before the police assume she is ultimately responsible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lindsay Chamerlain great detective.......2007-03-13

I honestly only started reading the Lindsay Chamberlain series because I had read all the Kathy Reichs, Patrica Cornwell etc books. Never did I think that any writer could be as good as thiers. But I am hooked after the first book I had to get the rest. I love the character Lindsay and her interactions with others. How she gets herself in trouble so much cause she cant say no to a good mystery.

Wonderful read and have already recommended this series to other people. Cant wait for her new one Kill Site to come out. waiting in anticipation.

5 out of 5 stars thrilling suspense.......2005-03-29

3rd in the Lindsay Chamberlain series, the story begins with Lindsay sniffing through a field looking for a missing art teacher from the university where Lindsay works. Finding the woman is one of Lindsay's few pieces of luck, though, as various household expenses keep adding stress to her finances. On top of that, she's worried about the possible upcoming merger of departments at the university; as a non-tenured faculty member, she could be job hunting soon. In the midst of all this, Lindsay's brother shows up unexpectedly with a truck load of her grandfather's leftover property - crates from a shed in his backyard, a shed of which no one was aware. If Lindsay didn't have enough on her plate, they find a skeleton in one of the crates, and then artifacts are discovered to be missing...and Lindsay seems to be the main suspect.

5 out of 5 stars A little Indiana Jones, a little Sherlock Holmes.......2004-03-27

Look out Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Beverly Connor's books are as good as anything written by the two reining queens of forensic science. Connor's heroine is a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones. Her books are fast paced and extremely entertaining. If you like archaeology or forensics, or if you just plain like a good mystery, give Beverly Connor's books a read. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars The best!!!.......2001-09-19

Beverly Connor is a jewel of an author who has yet to be discovered by the masses. But she will be. No mystery writer this good can go long without topping the bestseller list. In this installment of her Lindsay Chamberlain series, Beverly does it again with clever twists and turns and sharp writing. She's a smart writer for an intelligent reader. I never read a Connor book without learning something and, quite frankly, that's the kind of fiction I like to read. Buy this book and I promise you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another triumph for Lindsay.......2000-10-11

Lindsay Chamberlain never invites danger into her life; it just happens upon her frequently like an unwanted guest. In this tale Lindsay is in danger...this time of losing her job at the University of Georgia's Archaeology Department due to a merger with another department. If that were not enough to worry her, a cache of priceless artifacts delivered to her by her father is stolen, and all eyes are on Lindsay. Lindsay also becomes involved in the murder case of a long-missing UGA professor whose skeleton is recently found? Friends and strangers linked to Lindsay are either injured or killed trying to help, and Lindsay must put together all of the strewn puzzle pieces before she is next on the hit list.

I have enjoyed Beverly Connor's series for many years; Lindsay Chamberlain is one of the most original and dynamic sleuths to have been created in recent years, and Dressed to Die is well worth the cover price.

2 out of 5 stars Sort of Boring........2007-07-11

I really had a hard time getting into this book. I didnt appreciate alll the nursing lingo - kind of like the author showing off her expertise? It was distracting. I also thought that the story was slow and while the ending had a nice twist, there really wasnt enough suspense. I will not read another in this series.

5 out of 5 stars A Ship Full of Fun.......2007-05-28

I don't enjoy romance novels masquerading as mysteries, but Candy Calvert has hit just the right balance with Dressed to Keel. The characters are delightfully zany, the mystery very satisfying and well plotted, and the lead man yummy. The best part, though, is heroine ER nurse Darcy Cavanaugh, who is believably smart and daffy at the same time as she solves the who dun it while battling a broken heart and career upheaval. And her best friend, the colorful Marie, is worthy of a series all her own.

5 out of 5 stars A funny and engaging page turner!.......2007-01-17

Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (1/07)

I picked this book up on a Sunday morning and figured that I would read for an hour or so and then do my chores. Its 5PM, the book is finished, no chores are done and I am still in my PJ's. This is one of the few books that I have read that I can honestly say I could not put it down once I started it. "Dressed to Keel" is Candy Calvert's launch of the Darcy Cavanaugh mystery series and she has a real winner.

The story starts out "The cruise brochure promised confetti, melting wedges of Brie, well-stuffed tuxedoes, and silver buckets of Dom Perignon." Who would not want to go on a trip like that? Darcy Cavanaugh gets that and so much more, including murder and mystery as she takes a much needed vacation. Darcy is an ER nurse who is burned out with her job and by love. She decides to get away from it all by taking this cruise with senior citizens because her friend Marie is the shipboard nurse. But after a cabin steward is found dead and the robberies begin, the fingers are pointing at Marie. Darcy must find a way to clear her friend of the murder and solve the mystery before the body count starts piling up.

Darcy's first and primary suspect is the handsome and sexy dance instructor Luke Skyler. He always seems to be around when trouble brews and is also watching her very closely. Or could it be any one of the outrageous seniors who are also on the cruise? This is what Darcy must find out as she becomes the next target on the ship.

"Dressed to Keel" is full of outrageous characters, gourmet food, champagne and beautiful clothes. The story is a mystery, but is kept light and full of fun. Calvert proves that she has a wonderful sense of humor over and over again through this mystery story and I am very much looking forward to her next installment in the Darcy Cavanaugh mysteries. After all...who needs to go food shopping or have a clean house or laundry when there is great mystery novel to be read?

5 out of 5 stars You go Girl!.......2006-08-06

Candy Calvert has created the funniest most mischievous klutz of a character(Darcy)I have met in a long time. I laughed, giggled, and hoo-hawd my way through the book. I give it the highest compliment I possibly can " I slowed my reading down because I was not ready to leave these wacky characters. " Thanks Candy Calvert and I look forward to more Darcy adventures. May they be as funny and witty as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny!.......2006-08-05

I couldn't put the book down--such a page-turner! What a fun book to read! It had me laughing out loud. Candy Calvert did a great job with Darcy and the cast of hilarious "prune-aged" characters. Looking forward to her next adventure at sea!

Book Description

"It is almost Friday night. Outside, the dark is getting darker," and here and there around the city ninety-two men and thirteen women are getting dressed to go to work. First they bathe and put on their underwear. Then they don special black-and-white apparel. Then when the one hundred and five people are completely ready, each takes a musical instrument and travels to midtown. There, at 8:30 tonight, they will work together: playing.

In these pages Karla Kuskin and Marc Simont combine their talents to give us a delightful and unusual inside view of one way an orchestra prepares.

2 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but for kids?.......2006-12-17

The book is adorable, but I found the drawings of the people in various undergarments (or none at all) on to be a little too much to give to my 5-year-old nephew.

1 out of 5 stars Details kids 4-8 don't need to be concerned about.......2006-04-19

I was very disappointed in this book. I, guess, as a musician I was hoping for more emphasis on music and not twelve pages on bathing, showering, shaving, putting on underwear...well, you get the idea. It's the first Reading Rainbow book I have not liked at all. I had planned to give this to a friend's children but I defintely will not.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect addition to a musical child's library.......2005-10-23

I first read (or rather had this book read to me) when I was a young child, and it still has a place in my adult bookcase. Never have I read such a brilliant explanation of the lives of classical musicians in New York City: how they begin to get dressed for work while other adults return home from their day; how concert dress requires the standard basic black from both men and women; how large bracelets and dangling earrings just do not go with certain instruments. As the child of musicians, I can also note, with a wry smile, how the conductor is built up as this mysterious gentlemen who is the most important ingredient to the Philharmonic. With succinct prose and beautiful illustrations, this book is a must have for children of musicians or any child who has an interest in classical music and opera.

5 out of 5 stars Grab a classic.......2005-05-03

This book has been around forever but you'd never know it because it has a timeless and lasting appeal. Preparing for another performance evening for a professional musician of the Philharmonic becomes an incredible introduction into a night of the Symphony. The different aspects of ordinary life getting ready to go to work as professional musician are subtle but no less effective.

I remember this book being read to me before the first time I ever visted Carnegie Hall for a recital. I loved it then - share it now.

5 out of 5 stars A magical and decptively simple book.......2005-03-15

I adored this book growing up, and recently found my copy of it. It tells the story of, well, the Philharmonic getting dressed. Litterally. The story ends when the show begins.

It offers some fascinating concepts of the kind that kids love: that talented individuals are real people too, who take baths and have children and pets; that a "whole" can be made up of many different parts (1 philharmonic = many different people). The illustrations are simple but witty enough to call the child's attention.

It makes a perfect bedtime story, by the way, because even though the members of the Philharmonic are getting dressed, many of the rituals mirror a child's bedtime rituals: taking a bath, getting dressed in pj's, saying goodnight to family, etc.

One morning Froggy wakes up and discovers snow--glorious snow! Of course he immediately wants to frolic outside, but his sleepy mother reminds him that frogs are supposed to sleep all winter. "Wake up when the snow melts," she calls out from her cozy bed. But Froggy insists. So off he goes after putting on his socks--"zoop," his boots--"zup," his hat--"zat," and his scarf--"zwit." The playful sound effects are perfect for read-aloud merriment and the watercolor illustrations by Frank Remkiewicz (Horrible Harry) are comic-strip silly. As soon as Froggy gets outside his mother calls out to remind him to put on his pants. This, as any child knows, means laboriously pulling off all footwear. "Zwit, zat, zup, zut." Then he forgets his coat and it's more "zut, znap, zum." And then--horror of horrors!--his mother yells out in front of all his animal playmates, "Froggy, your underwear!" (Which of course elicits giggles.) Ultimately, the on- and off-again dressing is too exhausting for Froggy and he winds up right back where he belongs. Good night, Froggy. 5 out of 5 stars A definite bedtime story request night after night.......2006-11-12

What a cute book! My kids love hearing me read FROGGY so they can respond with WHAT! The sounds after Froggy puts on a piece of clothing still makes my children laugh and we've been reading it off and on for over a year. This is a book that parents will enjoy reading also.

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Reversive Recursive: Fun With Froggy.......2006-09-07

Another in the prolific Jonathan London's "Froggy" series, this book about the amphibious one is a recursive story about all the clothes you must wear on a snowy day--and all the clothes you must take off (in the reverse order) when you forget to put some on.

In this Froggy tale, our green hero wakes up with incredible enthusiasm--it's like he was raised on caffeine--and he just CANNOT wait to go out and play in the snow.

"No! No! cried Froggy.
"I'm awake! awake!
I want to go out and play
in the snow."

Straight away, he puts on his socks, boots, hat, scarf, and mittens. London cleverly uses different sound effects for each item (e.g., socks get a "zoop!," and mittens, a "zum!"), and different verbs for each action: A scarf is tied on, boots are pulled. However, just as the excited Froggy is ready to join the other animals in the snow, his mother yells, "Frrrooggyy!" (and that's a direct quote) "Did you forget to put something on?" Froggy discovers that he forgot one important thing--to put on his pants.

That, of course, is an almost certain lock on kids' attention. But first, Froggy has to take off all his clothes (except his socks--they don't get in the way), put on his pants, then put them all his clothes on again. The hasty frog's mood jumps from joyful to exasperated surprise to determined. Subsequently, his mother clues him into noticing that he has forgotten his coat and shirt, and, of course, his underwear. All this putting on and taking off and putting back on tires Froggy out, and he crawls back into bed. The book's basic plot and repetitive scheme will engage most toddlers, and teach them a lot about clothes (they all look so cozy!), sequencing, and word structure. The illustrations, colors, and font are big and bright, and despite all the action, the pages look uncluttered.

(One very minor complaint regards the synchronization of text and illustration. On one of the three pages where Froggy realizes he forget to put something on, he is shown smiling as he prepares a snowball. It's really unfortunate when this sort of editing error occurs, and I've seen such problems [poor continuity is another example] in other books for kids.)

Illustrator Frank Remkiewicz also does wonders with facial and body expressions. Still, I wonder whether somewhat older toddlers and those in early elementary school might feel a little disappointed that Froggy doesn't get to play. It's realistic--a kid or a frog WOULD get tired with all that dressing exercise--but I didn't like that the mom smiles so broadly when Froggy goes back to bed. However, I doubt that the intended audience is going to give a rivet about that.

5 out of 5 stars Cute story, my daughter loves the sound effects.......2006-06-25

I've always loved the Froggy books, so when I had my daughter I was glad to see that there was a board book available in the series. She's 3 months old now and loves to look at the pictures and enjoys all the sound effects that go along with Froggy putting on each item of clothing.

2 out of 5 stars Froggy's mommy is not very nice!.......2005-03-19

This is our first Froggy book. We bought this book because of all the great reviews. If I had previewed the book at the bookstore, it would probably had stayed at the bookstore. There is probably nothing wrong with the way Froggy's mommy chose to deter Froggy from playing in the snow, but my older son was turned off by her telling Froggy about his underwear and he didn't want to read the book anymore.

His explanation was Froggy's mommy is not very nice because: 1) she embarrassed him by yelling at him in public, 2) my son didn't see the problem with Froggy not wearing underwear (since Froggy probably wasn't wearing underwear in bed or he wouldn't have forgotten, 3) for my son, underwear had no function in keeping warm. I asked my son to suggest some ways to improve the book (as we always do when we find bad books), and he said, "she should help him get dressed and let him play for 10 minutes in the snow. That's what I would like you to do if I were Froggy." Love that child.

The illustrations are quite cute, especially with the rabbit and racoon in the process of making a snow bear in the background. It is nice to see such attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that easy being green.......2005-02-09

It's very very difficult to dislike froggy. Those wide innocent eyes. That wide innocent mouth. He's like Kermit the Frog in picture book form. And though Froggy has been around some ten years plus, he's just as beloved of children today as he has ever been. You want a good read aloud story? Just pick up the nearest Froggy book you can find and start ah-readin'. Like Pavolv's dog, kids are somehow programmed to react to Froggy's setbacks and mistakes with uproarious cued laughter. The best example of this can probably be found in the lovely laughable, "Froggy Gets Dresssed". Arguably the best in the series ("Froggy's First Kiss", has its admirers as well, I should note), the book's a great Intro to Froggydom. And in the wintertime it's an ideal choice for your little ones.

First of all, frogs hibernate in the winter. This is a fact of life. No one disputes this. But this winter is different. Froggy wakes up in his warm toasty bed, takes one look out the window and shrieks with delight, "Snow! Snow!... I want to play in the snow!". Froggy's mother attempts to dissuade her little one from this course of action, pointing out that frogs are not snow-playing creatures. Froggy remains undeterred. He dresses hurriedly and flops outside. Whoops! Froggy seems to have forgotten his pants. So he runs back inside, puts on the missing item and runs outside. Whoops! He's forgotten his shirt and coat. You see where this is going. About the time it becomes clear that Froggy has forgotten his underwear (cue the laughter of underwear obsessed kids everywhere) he's too tired to do anymore playing in snowdrifts. And so, it's back to bed he heads.

You want alliteration in your picture books? Well brother, you've got alliteration. One of the great draws in "Froggy Gets Dressed" are the sounds made as Froggy dresses. Listen: "So Froggy put on his socks - zoop! Pulled on his boots - zup! Put on his hat - zat! Tied on his scarf - zwit! Tugged on his mittens - zum!". It's twice as much fun to say aloud as it is to read to yourself. But Jonathan London is only half the genius in the Froggy world. Illustrator Frank Remkiewicz deserves just as much credit as well. Froggy is such a likable protagonist that it's hard not to read the book over and over just to watch him as he leaps, hops, dresses, undresses, and generally has a fine ole time. And his mother, though she tells him that frogs sleep in the winter, is mostly amused by his antics. She carries a bemused smile on her face as he runs hither and thither in the snow, donning various articles of clothing. Clever children may even wonder why it is that Froggy HAS all this winter clothing if he tends to sleep during the winter. Such children should be immediately deemed geniuses and given full scholarships to Yale. Ditto adults who say the same thing.

All in all, it's hard to find a better upbeat winter bedtime story than dear old "Froggy Gets Dressed". It's one of those sure-fire hits that the kids will be bound to enjoy. A top notch bit of kiddie fare. Recommended in spades.

5 out of 5 stars If the world were run by toddlers..........2007-04-26

Bing would be a superstar! I never would have picked up this book, but my two-year-old grabbed it at the library and wouldn't let go. This book follows the usual arc of tragedy to triumph as Bing tries to dress himself, and then the unexpected happens -- he pees his pants. Didn't see that coming. Luckily his friend Flop is always calm and non judgmental -- it's no big thing, just take off those "dungarees" and get dressed again. Something about this series really speaks to the toddler, and the three Bing books we now own are perennial favorites. Give Bing a try!

5 out of 5 stars It's a Bing Thing!.......2006-05-04

I wish Bing were as popular in America as Barney is. These books are a hoot and my son just can't get enough of them. I checked all 8 out from the library and had to end up buying them.

Bing is a bunny who interacts with his stuffed animal Flop. The books show Bing learning colors, foods, potty training, etc., all in the course of a day.

Adults will enjoy the '60s vibe of the cars, houses and furniture in the books.

Maybe an animated Bing show in America will make these books as popular as they deserve to be.

4 out of 5 stars Yup-it's great.......2005-10-15

My 2 year old just loves this book, it's her new favorite. It's so fun to watch Bing Bunny get dressed all by himself and exercise his independence. The best thing about this book for my daughter is her excitement as she says "Yup" as they do in the book when they keep asking can you put your socks, shoes etc. on all by yourself-my daughter squeals "YUP" just like Bing. A fun and easy read and a perfect length for toddlers.

5 out of 5 stars Bing!.......2004-05-29

The Bing books are adorable! As a children's librarian, I am smitten with Bing and his cute sidekick Flop. The stories are short and concise, with perfect toddler-friendly events like getting dressed and painting a picture. Little accidents happen (Bing spills his messy paint water and ruins his pretty picture in "Paint Day", and wets his dungarees in "Get Dressed") but each story ends with Bing and Flop looking on the bright side, with happy-go-lucky "accidents happen" attitudes. Highly recommended -- A great addition to libraries and homes.

Book Description

I don't normally care about clothes, but when my friend Charlie Adams's sister Alicia opened a boutique right here in River Heights, of course I wanted to be at the opening.

Turns out it was a pretty popular event. Way more people than expected showed up, and then the store window was smashed, and people were injured! Later I found out that Alicia's most expensive dress was destroyed and her store had been vandalized.

Sounds like more than one-day-sale damage to me. I may not be a fashion expert, but this is one case I'm ready to size up.

1 out of 5 stars Needs a better editor.......2007-09-01

I found this book almost impossible to read mostly due to the very poor editing and total lack of guidance given the author. The author came up with an interesting idea but got far to carried away in many scenes and used mostly 2 dimensional characters who really did change much over the 100 pages I managed to read, hence my comment about lack of guidance from the editor. As far as the editing itself is concerned, many scenes could have been cut by a half to three-quarters to improve the flow of the storyline which is choppy at best. I'll put this book back on the shelf until a time when I am bored to tears. Perhaps then I'll be able to finish it. Not recommened.

4 out of 5 stars Dressed to Slay.......2007-03-23

Meg, Kat, and Tash Crosse were not thrilled about marrying their bland as dishwater fiances, but they were resigned to it. They certainly did not want an escape clause in the form of the three grooms-to-be becoming vampires who would try to kill them, but that's what they got. Instead of weddings and husbands, they find themselves with a legacy and a grandfather that they thought was dead re-entering their lives. As it turns out, one of the triplets is a Daughter of Lilith, the chosen vampire slayer of this generation. One is a healer. The third is destined to become a vampire. It looks to Grandfather like Meg is the vampire to be, so she finds herself excluded from the how to kill vampires 101 lessons and saddled with a shapeshifter named Mikhail who watches her like a hawk so that he can stop her from doing evil or protect her, as the case warrants. Meg can't decide if she's annoyed with him, attracted to him, or both, but there's really not time to figure all that out. There's a vampire queen on the loose who needs to be stopped, and it is up to the Crosse girls to do the job.

**** Reading the books out of order as I found myself doing, I knew how it would end, but that did not change how enjoyable the story was. Getting additional background information, especially how the slayer myth has been reinvented for this series, was helpful and interesting. If you enjoyed Buffy, then it's a sure bet you'll like this as well. ****

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst book in the English language.......2007-01-01

Rarely do I stop reading a book by page 30. This book is horrible! Poorly written, poorly edited, and even the first ten pages make no sense. The female characters are all bumbling idiots; the male characters are all dark, evil, but still superior to the females in every way possible.

Do NOT! waste your money on this book, unless you need something for a dart board. One page at a time.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good!.......2006-12-29

It took me a while to decide on buying this book due to mixed reviews but I'm very glad I did! In fact I would now say that I'm hooked on the Crosse sisters. In this first book of the new series triplets Megan, Kat, and Tash are trying to celebrate their upcoming marriages on the night before Megans' wedding. However, none of the girls is really happy. And that just gets worse when their fiances show up at the door as newly turned vampires and attempt to kill them.

The girls bumbelingly vanquish their men and the same night a strange prophecy, their long lost grandfather, and a werewolf show up. The girls find out that one of them is destined to be a vamp slayer ...and one of them is about to change into a vamp.

Now they must be trained as slayers though everyone assumes that Megan is the vamp to be. Even the vamp Queen whose been searching for them thinks that. And bound to the sexy werewolf, Michail, Megan is fighting for her life. Ironically, all isn't as it appears again for the sisters and their roles in life are about to change once more. Even those who are trusted turn out to be double crossers. And who will Megan choose Michail or the entirely human cop?

My only critisism with the entire book- that the love story doesn't seem to fully conclude with in this book and I know that the next book moves on to a different sister. I need to know if she loves him back darn it!

Watch for the newly released Vampaholic, already in my shopping cart, and the soon to be released Dead is the New Black.
