4 out of 5 stars What's Missing.......2007-05-12

This is indeed a beautiful book, but it is also maddening! A full length color photo of each garment should have been included to demonstrate how the detail relates to the whole and the black and white line drawings don't do it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and well laid out.......2006-10-11

This book features pictures of details from extant ethnic costumes from more than fifty countries. Next to each picture is a flat (line drawing) of the whole garment, which allows you to see construction and some stitching details, as well as the overall shape. Descriptions alongside each flat include mention of the gender, class, time period, and ethnicity of a person who might wear the garment, as well as a context in which they might do so.

The organization is a little odd, since it relates to the particular detail featured (e.g. "Necklines", or "Pleats and Gathers") but the index allows a search by place, which is very helpful. It also includes a map, glossary, and suggestions for further readings. Students interested in cultural dress will enjoy this brief introduction, though for more in-depth studies of a region, they should look into other resources.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, excellent text.......2005-12-29

This is one of the most gorgeous and inspirational dress/costume books I've ever seen. The photos are clear, detailed, and focus on all the right things. If you're looking for design ideas or just eye candy, this fits the bill. It's a pity amazon.com doesn't remove the one-star review. His complaint has nothing to do with the book itself--just poor HTML linking on amazon's part. This book deserves to have a solid five-star rating. (6/9/06--I'm happy to see the one-star review was removed)

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational for sewers and designers of Wearable Art!.......2005-09-29

Dress in Detail from around the world is one of the most inspirational books I have purchased. It expands your paradigm for designing your own patterns using the line drawings of these costumes. The embellishments, closures and use of multiple fabric combos is endless. The designs are simple and yet elegant depending on your choice in fabric. I feel they are adaptable to many figure types. I loved the focus of detail on necklines and cuffs as well as closures!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-09-15

This is a wonderful resource for costuming. The detail photos are excellent. The only thing that could make it better would be more photos.

Book Description

"Rises above many of its competitors, thanks to its ambitious scope...The book's photos and illustrations are frequently stunning....Gallagher's writing style is straightforward and articulate, with so much intelligence and grace, it's difficult not to be charmed."--Publishers Weekly

Take a fascinating peek into the geisha's world of tradition and ritual with the help of a most unique book. Four see-through vellum sections, of four layers each, begin with a "naked" geisha; they show, stage by stage, how her distinctive costume and make-up are assembled. You'll view the subtle changes of appearance through the round of seasonal events, and the elaborate array of equipment in the geisha's wardrobe, as well as everything she needs to do her demanding jobs. Equally revealing is the incredibly detailed information about the women's training, lives, and history.

great transaction.recommend seller.I have studied Japanese culture and music.I keep it out for company to enjoy. It is one of my favs.

4 out of 5 stars A thoroughly entertaining coffee table book on geishas.......2007-06-28

As a child I always been fascinated by Japan. I always loved Japanese culture from its rich history to its tapestry of fashion, pop culture, and its people including geishas. My interest in geishas really didn't hit its peak until I read Arthur Golden's novel "Memoirs of a Geisha". After the novel, I went out and bought or checked out any and every book about geishas.

I finally got around to checking out the John Gallagher coffee table book on geishas "Geisha: A Unique World of Tradition, Elegance, and Art". I personally enjoyed reading this book and looking at the gorgeous pictures. I loved the illustrations that dissected the geisha's wardrobe and makeup. I found the book pretty informative but there were times when I felt like the author was straying away from the topic of geishas and more into Japanese history. Was it really that necessary to go into the Heian and Edo periods? The author also does a bit of name checking but never get the people he name checks to say anything in his book. Liza Dalby gets a brief mention and that is about it. If anything Liza is the go to expert on geishas, not John Gallagher who I suspect is more familiar with Japanese history than with geishas. If John really knew a lot about geishas, why on earth did he use a lot photos of tourists dressed up as maikos? Think about it.

For a reference book on geishas, John Gallagher's book sure as heck isn't it. Go read Liza Dalby's "Geisha". For beautiful color photos, "Geisha: a Unique World of Tradition, Elegance, and Art" is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-01-10

My daughter loved the book. It is filled with remarkable photographs, drawings and excellent information about the world of Geisha. Would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Real geisha.......2006-07-30

Memoirs of a Geisha is a poorly written and pathetic work that somehow became a Best Seller and is now an equally pathetic film which only goes to show that anyone with the right connections gets things published and can make a movie.

However it has shown people something about the orient and has caused interest in the subject of these women.

This book is certainly a good result. It is extremely well written and very well illustrated. Quite a bargain in matters of content and price.

A must have for anyone interested in these women or merely Japanese history.

5 out of 5 stars very good for those into art, photography, or japanese culture..........2006-03-11

This book is extremely inexpensive for the number of pages and high quality photos. I found the captions and photos to express much meaning about the lives of geishas and it gave a look into the japanese culture, as well. I highly recommend this book as one for enjoyment and relaxation, as well as for research and such studies. Everyone of all tastes will enjoy this.

*To those who stated that this book doesn't give a look into the dark, seedy world of geishas -- geishas are different from prostitutes...geishas express art, dance, and culture and aren't trained to be prostitutes...several geishas have innocently entertained famous, powerful people such as Prince Charles, and other dignitaries in the past...*

4 out of 5 stars very good informative book.......2003-02-09

i've got this a bout 2 month ago and used it a lot, for both art, graphic works and just as somthing nice to look at, unlike the full color pictoral archive this is a very thural book, it has a lot of designs of allover patterns.

it's not one of those alboms you buy just to look at, it's a proffesional usful book for people who uses those designs for either decoration of wall or tiles and probebly decofague, quiltings, needle point and so on, for me patters is somthing i use a lot in my painting and this have proven to be useful in many oppertunities.

3 out of 5 stars Good design resource in black and white.......1999-04-24

This is a Dover picturial archive book, so almost the entire book is black/white designs. Many are very flowery and detailed. Many would make either good fabric or better wallpaper designs. I bought the book for ceramic tile designs and had to weed through for something that would work. Most of the designs were too much for my purposes. Still a very good source of inspiration, as all Dover books are!

5 out of 5 stars Another five-star fashion offering from Dover.......2006-08-13

Dover Publications are the go-to people for books on 19th-century fashion, and Stella Blum's "Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898" is at the top of the list. Like the companion volume by Joanne Olian, "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from 'La Mode Illustree'" (another book on this topic that I've given 5 stars), this book comprehensively shows, in splendid black-and-white illustrations taken directly from the old "Harper's Bazar" (note the spelling!) the changing feminine fashions of the Victorian and Edwardian periods over the 31-year period from 1867 to 1898. Every illustration is at least full-page (there are some breathtaking double-page spreads) and accompanied by brief descriptive text. I would definitely put it on the list of books that every student of 19th-century costume must own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Visual Resource for Costumers and Reenactors.......2006-07-15

Victorian Fashions and Costumes is eye candy for anyone interested in fashion history.

The arrangement of the book in chronological order by year makes it very easy to find historically correct garments, accessories, and hair styles. A brief overview of characteristics specific to the era is included in each section. Most pictures have captions that identify the type of garment and often the fabrics and colors used in a garment.

I used information in this book to create a bodice and bustle representative of the period for a skirt Mary Todd Lincoln wore in 1872 in England.

With all the historical patterns available in the major pattern books, the costumer or reenactor can find a basic pattern and add the correct construction details and embellishments. I enjoy browsing the book and wondering what life was like for the women who wore these clothes. If you are looking for information about the clothing worn by the common woman, you won't find it here. After all, this is from Harper's Bazar, the Vogue of the 19th Century.

5 out of 5 stars a must for Victorian age writers.......2005-06-05

What would romance writers do without Dover and their marvelous historical books? These books and even era paper dolls are inexpensive, and yet, thorough works that really can put you into the period. This book is stunning.

Victorian Fashion from Harper's Bazaar 1867-1898 is definitive book on Victorian fashions, however, while is stunning work, you should buy Full-Color Victorian Fashions from Dover Publishing as well. Together they are everything you need. This book goes in rich detail, just not the dresses but down to hair and accessories. It's broken down into four sections: 1) Bustles and Puff (1867-1874) 2) Natural Forma and Cuirass Body (1875-1882) 3) Return of the Bustle (1883-1890) and 4) Hourglass Figure (1891-1898). The drawings are detailed and cover every aspect of fashion of this era.

An absolute must for romance writers of this period. High recommended.

5 out of 5 stars another great 'vintage' Dover book.......2003-04-25

this is such a beautifully illustrated work of the fashions of the period from 1867-1898. Fans of Victoriana must have this in their library. Excellent resource for antiques lovers, jewelry designers, artists, costume designers etc.

This book is invaluable for all theatre costumers. its particularly helpfull with back views of garments, and has fantastic details, such as parasols ,gloves etc. I have also found it great for period hair references.Pages of detail. Also on a practical level, my edition at least, was very well bound.

    Book Description

Ask anyone what Cher wore to the Oscars in 1985 and they can describe the Spiderwoman headdress, the exposed navel, and the looks on people's faces when she made her entrance. Ask about Carol Burnett's "Went with the Wind" dress, and they'll say it was a green velvet Southern Belle costume made from drapes--with the curtain rod still attached. Funny and outrageous, these are just two of the many costumes Mackie has indelibly etched into our minds. He has also dressed such celebrities as Elton John, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, and RuPaul; designed for Broadway, Las Vegas, opera, and ballet; and currently runs a couture business with licenses for fragrance, fashion accessories, eyewear, suits, furs, home furnishings, and collectible Barbie dolls.

This spectacularly bright and colorful book is as outrageous as Mackie's designs. In addition to classic photos of marvelous Mackie-clad superstars of the last three decades, glorious gatefolds and specially commissioned color photographs by Gideon Lewin illustrate Mackie's extraordinary achievements.

Unmistakably Mackie demonstrates how this seven-time Emmy Award-winning designer has reached the consciousness of the American masses and turned them on to a stylish fantasy that is purely his own.

5 out of 5 stars I Went, "Holy Cow, That Person Looks GREAT!".......2006-10-28

And that thought never wavered once as I agonizingly slowly fiddled with the corners of each page to the next, completely awed and feeling like I wanted to go to New York and show off my skinky legs as well. This book is unreal.

There's flash everywhere. There's pizazz. There's an army of sequins, a rainbow of sparkles, a lifetime of gorgeous reds, beautiful greens, and dazzling blues that you would have never dreamed would have graced this earth in all of eternity. They all flash, they all sparkle, they all wink out and grab you by the eyeballs and force you to gawk and gawk at them until you feel like all your pupils have dried up and you can't possibly gawk anymore, but you just do.

The book is sort of divided into sections, but the reader (or watcher) won't pay too much attention to that except for the divisions for the Hollywood and Barbie section. You've got funky fonts that pop out at you from this unknown corner you never knew was there; you've got these curvaceous paragraphs shaped like a woman's body; and you've got so many other things that I couldn't possibly explain to you until you've bought the damn book. So buy it already.

My only complaint is that the "Hollywood", "Barbie", and his own fashion line sections are too brief. How can you possibly fit more than forty years of glory, fashion, and Bob Mackie into just over 150 pages?

It ain't nobody, but Mackie. Get it for yourself! You will never, *ever* regret that decision.

5 out of 5 stars The Fashion and Fantasy of Bob Mackie.......2006-09-16

Wonderful book! Such gorgeous pictures and I loved the Bob Mackie story too. My only complaint is that it just wasn't long enough.....hoping for a sequel.

I bought Unmistakably Mackie after drooling over the book for nearly a year. It is beautiful, it is entertaining, it is over the top, it is history. It is also a fine education in costume design and fashion illustration.
I have other books that feature Mackie's unrivalled fashion illustrations, but here I can see and almost touch the finished costumes that made Cher and Carol and Ann-Margaret. I can finally analyze how they are made.
Please, don't wait to buy this wonderful book. and it is well worth getting a new, pristine copy of this treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Unmistakably Mackie -- if you love fashion...you'll love Bob.......2000-04-18

WOW! WOW! WOW! Unmistakably Mackie is a fabulous fashion book! This is by far my favorite book! The photography is stunning. The creative type layouts are imaginative. The sketches are wonderful. Anyone interested in costume &/or fashion design will LOVE this book writen by Frank DeCaro ("Style over Substance" columnist for the NY Times).

As a designer & illustrator just starting out, I find no end of inspiration in this book! The sketches are delightful and the outfits are always immaginative. (Looking at the photos & sketches, I found out I can draw Cher too!) :o)

Before reading this book on Bob Mackie, I had no idea the extent of his influence. I just knew I liked his designs. Now he is undoubtedly my favorite designer. (I want to do what he does!) This man has done everything...from his own ready-to-wear fashion line to Broadway, television (Cher and Carol Burnett), movies, ballet, an opera, Vegas and Barbie! If there's something he hasn't designed for, I'd be surprised.

    I heartily recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars For fashion fans everywhere!.......2000-02-03

This survey of the fashion and fantasy of fashion designer Mackie examines his many contributions. Mackie created works for popular television as well as film and stage: Unmistakably Mackie considers his life, fashion designs and revealing outfits. Plenty of color photos of actresses in full outfit abound.

    Book Description

Though Nashville is the current Country-and-Western capital, Hollywood put hillbilly singers to work in the early years (1930s-1950s) in movies, at recording studios, and on radio shows.

Hillbilly Hollywood is a lavishly illustrated volume that examines the culture that produced costumes (like Nathan Turk, Nudie Cohen, and Manuel Cuevas) who created that famous C&W style - well tailored, elaborately embroidered or beaded clothes.

Historical text and interviews with C&W legends complement examples from Mary Stuart's extensive vintage collections as well as candid photographs (most never published before) of Elvis Presley, Gene Autry, Patsy Cline, and more. Dynamically designed, Hillbilly Hollywood is as much a collector's piece as the costumes it features.

    5 out of 5 stars beauty & brains & cool, cool, cool.......2005-02-04

The swoon-inducing, jaw-dropping photo of young Johnny Cash at the Hollywood Bowl alone is worth the price of this book. But don't just look at the beautiful pictures (and there are many) - read the words. Well-written, insightful, and often funny, the stories from the mouths of the stars sparkle brighter than the rhinestones on the cover. Hillbilly Hollywood motivated me to search out and find the music of artists unfamiliar to me before, and I will forever be grateful to the author for introducing me to the wild brilliance of the almost-forgotten Maddox Bros. & Rose, and others like them. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves music, whether it be country-western, punk rock, or anything in between.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful in Every Way........2005-01-19

Debby Bulls book "Hillbilly Hollywood" gives us a great look at the almost-forgotten flashy country and western artists of radio and early western movies. We get a thorough insiders look at the glitz and the true 'ART' of rhinestone cowboy and cowgirl wear by the country artists of the '40's and 50's. There are wonderful color images and historical photos of my favorite country legends. The book itself would be at home on Elvis's coffee table. Yum! Yum! This book is a "Five Star" ten course feast for the eyes and soul for us wannabe cowboy and cowgirl types. A true collectors item.

    5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly HEAVEN!!!!.......2005-01-14

I'm a very hard girl to buy for (and a music snob to boot)but my sweetheart did a very good thing when he purchased Hillbilly Hollywood for me as an early Valentine's Day gift!
It's just GORGEOUS,well-written,and chock-full of stunning color images of several historic pieces of country couture including rare photos of artists that I just adore like Johnny Cash,The Flying Burritto Bros.,and (gasp!) Rockabilly Goddess CHARLENE ARTHUR!!!
It's very difficult these days to find any information on the designers Nudie and Manuel but this book covers it ALL!!!
    SO SATISFYING!!!
    Always,
Grey DeLisle (wife of Murry Hammond:)

5 out of 5 stars Great book, for cowboy and cowgirls.......2002-03-23

    Who are into western wear.
I'm a cowgirl living in The Netherlands and books about westernwear are hard to find. 100 years of western wear by Tyler Beard was the one I found in Holland. Also a great book!!
Tyler send Hillbilly Hollywood to me, and I love every page of it! It's about stars and their love for the garb.

5 out of 5 stars Does Hillbilliness Proud.......2000-07-10

Debby Bull's HILLBILLY HOLLYWOOD is an astonishing book. Her writing is never tainted by nostalgia. It's fresh, original and cleverly surmised. The physical book is about as extravagant as Nudie's glorious Western regalia--complete with rhinestones on the cover. It's a tribute to a strange phenomenon--the gone, but not forgotten completely, country-western artists of the '40s who were (regrettably) bumped from the spotlight by rock 'n roll and leftist politics. It's great to see the spirit of this era so well communicated. As a native born hillbilly and the author of THE BEAUTIFUL AND ENDURING OZARKS and co-author with my wife Crystal of 3 books on Branson (often dubbed "the hillbilly Las Vegas") I feel credentialed to endorse this book. I'm going to order a six-pack later in the year for Christmas presents. I suspect there is a bunch of closet hillbillies out there that will get a real kick from this neat book.

      Book Description

Beads have been a fascinating method for embellishing fashion since ancient cultures sought personal adornment. The twentieth century has seen some of the most innovative, colorful, and wonderful uses for beading as an enhancement in apparel, and, recently, beads have come into fashion as never before. Both vintage and recent costume are desirable as much, if not more, for their beading as for the overall design. This lavishly illustrated book includes chapters on the history, techniques, preservation, and collecting of beads in the world of fashion. With 534 beautiful color photos, a detailed text, captions, value guide, index, and bibliography, it is the first to cover both vintage and recent costume and accessories in one volume. With clothing by designers, ranging from Fortuny and Mackie to unknowns, this volume will delight anyone in the field of fashion.
