I put off buying "Cross" thinking I'd get it in paperback cheaper and easier to travel with but I couldn't stand the wait so I plunked down the extra bucks at Amazon and waited for it. Well worth the wait. This version of the AC the dragonslayer isn't that complex in terms of the chase, the bad guy manages to come to Alex mostly or stay away totally and we read about his cavorting with knives and saws sparing no one and doing stuff that would make Mandy Patinkin green. The anti-hero "Butcher" serves as JP's means of commenting about current societal ills. Grizzly fun? Can I be saying that? In the beginning Alex loses his wife and we have to wait for the end to find out who killed her but it doesn't matter much because the story is all in the middle. Morgan Freeman even shows up. If you like JP and AC and the usual rapist/murderer suspects, mob vengence, etc, you'll be down with "Cross."

I swore off Alex Cross for a while because I found the character FAR too unbelievable in his gushy perfection. I decided to take another try with this novel. It is definitely less gushy and annoying but I can't say I am a Cross fan. It still seemed that the plot for Alex was a bit too contrived. Having said that, however, I was still entertained by Cross. Having to do a good deal of professional reading, that is perfectly acceptable to me. If I pick up a novel, I want to be entertained. I do not expect my socks knocked off but simply to be engaged enough that I enjoy the novel. Patterson was successful in doing that. This book is not a "gripping, page-turner" but is certainly worth reading.
Format book, I'm afraid........2007-08-17
In this book, while chasing a serial killer and helping a battered woman deal with her abusive cop boyfriend, Cross finally gets the chance to go after the man that killed his wife years ago. Sounds good but the writing lacks punch. Patterson needs to take a break from this series for a bit as it has grown stale.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all the other JP / Alex Cross Novels. I almost could not put it down. But when I got to the end it was almost as if someone else had written it. It seemed like the author had something else to do and just threw in a conclusion. How disappointing for such a wonderful, thrilling novel.

The book came in a sealed cover. Although it looks brand new, it does say it is "used". You would never know it. This is a great book to learn about cultures and the way society runs. I have learned so much from this book, it's unbelieveable. This text book is very basic, but it is good at covering the basic principles of Sociology. Reading this text book would pretty much have you covered for a Soc 101 course. Anything beyond that you would need extra reading material.

I was disappointed with this text. The authors repeat the same themes numerous times with little original insight. It seems to me that they are more interested in perpetuating stereotypes then providing students with any educating information.

This book is the worst textbook I have yet come across in my education as of yet. The authors repeat the same theme many times before they move on. Many of the chapters could have been shorter. I felt as if the authors had in mind to write a book for complete morons!
Besides for the idiotic writing, what's up with all of the racist rhetoric?!? The authors are clearly racist towards the "white folk", as they label white people. Every example of racism or underserved minorities, or anything of the like are overtly blamed on the "white folk". Just leave it out and teach us how to provide services for minorities! The authors make it sound as if every white male in this country is a racist and sexist bigot, who also hates disabled individuals. I can go on and on, but I will stop here.
Then finally, there is the very unprofessional bashing of other scholarly works, such as the Bell Curve, and others. Absolutely childish and uncalled for.
If you can get away without purchasing this textbook, do so! It is a waste of money.
good overview of difficult subject.......2007-04-28
Many of the reviewers have found offense with this book. This, unfortunately, illustrates the difficulty that many people have with discussing issues of race in a way that forces them to examine their own biases and assumptions. The book, "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" : A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity" by Beverly Tatum, also gives a great introduction to the major difficulties that some people have in identifying the role of power and privilege in their lives, and how we are taught in this country to be hypersensitive of exploring issues of race and privilege to the point that many people avoid the subject altogether, assume a 'colorblind' ideology, or take it as a personal attack. It is important to keep in mind that these assumptions and biases (and we ALL have them, myself included!) are largely unconscious, have been demonstrated through LOTS and LOTS of social psychological research to be present, even though we don't mean them to be; and are no one's 'fault' but are a product both of our brain's tendency to use cognitive 'short-cuts' to classify people, and of our society and the existing power inequalities. As a researcher and educator in the field, I found this book to be helpful in that it touches up many of the issues and difficulties that both practitioners and researchers face in doing cross-cultural work, and it does so in a way that is reflective of the state of the science in the psychological reserach.
Insidious and Dangerous.......2007-04-15
This text is required for a course in Cross Cultural Counseling for a Masters Program at NYU. I find it deeply disturbing that a book filled with stereotypes of all races, ethnicities and cultures is being used to allegedly foster a deeper consideration of culture in counseling situations. The only positive thing I can say is that it is equally offensive to everyone - no race or culture is spared. The "culturally incompetent white counselor", the "powerless" african american, the "family-oriented (and always late) Puerto Rican, the "confused" multiracial, the "collectivist" Asian American... the list goes on and on. Many of the studies cited are dated, while others are recitations of other work done by - you guessed it - Sue and Sue. I urge anyone who is required to use this textbook to challenge their professors - it may lead to some productive dialogue about race, ethnicity, culture and counseling. Otherwise, this text is an insulting waste of time.
They tell it like it is..........2007-03-06
Sue and Sue gave words to things I have felt and observed but couldn't describe. However, the problem was not racism itself - it was how I was reacting to it. I learned in this book that people of color go through stages of a healthy racial development. Once I recognized that, I knew I was fine and so will you! Racism is not any individual's fault - "white" folks are just as much a victim to this malady of society. And I have to say that it is getting better and better all the time. Allelujah! :-)

Cross and Angelo is a classic text that all professors should have in their teaching and learning library. The techniques are concrete, simple, and powerful. This is not a theory book but truly a handbook of techniques that will not only improve your teaching but more importantly improve your students' learning.
Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques.......2002-07-24
Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.
I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.
If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"
Both more and less than I expected.......2001-10-18
The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.
One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.
Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.
Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.
On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

The missing link for cross section, panel data and program evaluation.......2007-06-02
This book fills a real gap for those who are interested in things like ATE, ATET and topics related to impact evaluation that are only talked about now in research papers. The explanations are very very clear and they walk you through the thinking process by which the different methods were developed. Of course, it has the traditional coverage of panel data and cross section but with the clarity that Wooldridge always delivers on his books. For all that, this is a perfect addition to your econometric libraries as it covers topics that are not discussed in traditional and introductory econometric books.
A comprehensive survey.......2007-05-12
This book provides an excellent overview about state-of-the-art methodologies in econometrics. Instead of other textbooks it stresses more on conditionals and explains potential problems with underlying assumptions in more detail. As I find it sometimes hard to orientate myself, I give 4 stars.
Very good coverage on cross-sectional, but not enough of panel data.......2006-08-18
This book does an excellent job in covering cross-sectional and microeconometric models (Stata codes for all examples in the book are available from UCLA's webside). However, the exposure to panel data is limited. For a theoretical overview of panel data econometrics, I'd recommend Hsiao and Baltagi. For applied work, Edward Frees wrote a good book, although his book is more from the social science perspective (SAS and Stata codes are provided).
The best? Not for me (and everyone I know)........2005-09-30
Clearly this product is overrated. In my opinion the book is a complete mess, with definitions, propositions and theorems mixed with the main text and not clearly evidenced from it.
It's funny, because the book uses a panoplia of bolds, italics, etc in the main text (well, there is only main text here) which I dislike and think is unnecessary, and then do not use it to evidence the important results. As a result I think this is probably the worst book that I can remember of for reference.
There are better books and it's almost impossible to get one worse than this one.

First Alex Cross Book.......2007-08-17
This was my first Alex Cross novel and it really drawed my in from the beginning. It trully was a page turner and I could barely put the book down. I loved how the chapters were short and sweet. I am now searching to find more of this books to read to get some more of that action that keeps me on the edge!
Hated The Ending.......2007-08-07
I got this book to read on the plane as I usually like this murder thrillers for travel. Overall I enjoyed the book but was not at all prepared for the ending. Or the non ending I sould say. In this kind of novel, gererally the good guy catches the bad guy at the end and all's happily ever after. Not so here. So because of this I won't be reading more. An end which is only the beginning of the next book is not a plot trick I appreciate. I do like Alex Cross and family...but Patterson appears to be unable to let his main character ever be HAPPY. Too unsettling. There's enough unhappiness in the world, I read a novel to escape and have the good guys win.

This is a book of Bank Robberies and killings of bank managers families and a few detectives . I was able to read the entire book however I found the GD word that used way to many times in book to be a little offensive so I won't be reading anymore of the Alex Cross series .The book would have been just as good without the GD words in it .

Another Great Alex Cross Novel.......2007-04-30
Like all the other JP Books especially the Alex Cross series this book is the same - a great thriller that keeps you guessing right to the end. He has the usual short chapter set up which we all love i am sure making this a short read full of suspense. BTW you must also get Violets are Blue so you can find out how it all ends! Great read would recommend to anyone

OUTSTANDING REFERENCE TOOL.......2007-09-14
Previously, DK Books has release four volumes in their Star Wars cross-sections series, covering the various Star Wars films. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, they've now combines all four of those volumes, along with new illustrations into the massive Star Wars: The Complete Cross Sections. This coffee table-sized hardcover book packs information on every ship and vehicle used in the six films into 152 full-color pages. John Knoll, the Visual Effects Supervisor for episodes I - III, provides the foreword to the book.
The book is basically an encyclopedia for Star Wars ships and vehicles. The items are shown in a cutaway art, allowing the reader to not only see the outside, but also see the interiors as well. This gives fans a unique viewpoint as you generally didn't get a chance to see inside many of these ships and vehicles in the films themselves. Most of these are given a full two-page spread which include data files about each one. The data files provide information such as design and manufacture, wingspan, speed, crew capacity, armament, dimensions, ship or vehicle type, and other special features.
The book begins with Episode I, The Phantom Menace with each of the first three episodes getting their own chapter while the original three films are combined into the last chapter. In addition to the data files, a host of other information is provided on each vehicle as well. Text keys with map lines are drawn to each, pointing out important features of each vehicle. These are about the next best thing to the actual ships blueprints. The detail is simply amazing! On the Naboo Cruiser for example we see where the fuel tanks and fuel lines are located, along with coolant ducts, deflector shield projectors, sensor arrays and even mundane things such as the crew lounge and locker areas. These allow the reader to get inside these massive vehicles and ships and almost take a virtual tour through them.
Get up close and personal with Jango Boba Fett's heavily armed Slave I ship with its blaster cannons, laser cannons, missile launchers, and mine layers. Other ships included from the episodes I to III include Padme's Starship, ARC -170 Fighter, General Grievous's Wheel Bike, Pod Racers, and Palpatine's Shuttle.
The final chapter dealing with the three original films has certainly the most popular ships for fans including the Millennium Falcon, AT-AT Walker, Jabba's Barge, and Darth Vader's Tie Fighter. Several of the major ships and vehicles get fold out sections that provide four full pages worth of data. Chief among these is the first Death Star. The Slave I makes a second appearance here that includes the modifications made by Jango Fett's son, Boba.
Hats off to DK Books for also profiling the two artists whose brilliant work is on display here, Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore. The detail and effort that went into these drawings is truly phenomenal. This is one of those items that is tailor-made for the hardcore Star Wars fan, a reference tool that can be consulted over and over again.

People should get Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections.
Here are three reasons why anyone who likes Star Wars should get this book.
1. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections includes information about ALL six episodes in one book. It's great to have it all in one volume instead of four separate books (Episodes I, II, III, and the Trilogy).
2. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections has extra content not included in the separate volumes. The Imperial Shuttle, the RZ-1 A-Wing, and the B-Wing Star Fighter are new material in the combined book.
3. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections is jam-packed with large full color illustrations and tons of fascinating facts. The pages are crowded, but the information is great.
The Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections book rules the galaxy and any Star Wars fan would just love to have a copy. I checked it out of the library, but now it's on my Christmas wish list!!
My 5 year old loves it!.......2007-08-11
I purchased this for my 5 year old because he loves Star Wars. We have a couple of other Star Wars guides. He loves the cross section book because "it shows all the ships and details and that's cool". He loves finding something small that I would have missed. Great book for all ages.
Not What I Expected But Great Nontheless.......2007-07-05
Don't know why but I was expecting technical drawings of the Star Wars vehicles. Instead I get beautiful drawings of the vehicles and some of the characters which was an unexpected plus. Especially for scale comparison with some of the bigger vehicles. The reason this item dose not get five stars from me is because when reading the book things can get somewhat confusing there is so much info on each page it practically spills out from the sides. I would recommend it to anybody who wants more information on their favorite Star Wars vehicles!

My son has not put this book away since we bought it. It goes on every car ride with us, and even to school for free time reading. The pictures are beautiful. He absolutely loves it.
