4 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR RENDERING - A LITTLE DISORGANISED.......2007-04-03

The best recommendation for this text would be to break up the book into particular sections on rendering different types of fabrics first; and then doing full body/outfit examples. All the info is here and a definite companion to 9 HEADS but not recommended for beginners. Its great if you have back knowledge of fabrics and drawings but would be very confusing for those just starting out.

Overall, 4 stars, the info's all there, you've just got to go searching for it.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it .......2007-03-16

This book is absolutely perfect for anyone seeking to improve fashion drawing and rendering techniques. Through the different chapters, the author takes you on a step by step learning experience in this sort of art. I highly recommend it

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book .......2007-03-15

Color for Modern Fashion has many tips on using markers. The book is fill with full color illustrations and several step by instructions. A must have reference for anyone wanting to use markers.

1 out of 5 stars Simply Laughable.......2007-02-24

As a Design Professional, I have to say that this book is awful. I purchased it, and after looking through it, immediately returned it. The illustrations are terribly amateur and the rendering techniques are useless.

Color is better learned with a real color theory book

If you want to learn how to draw fabric, or people I would recommend looking for classic illustrators like Andrew Loomis; this book is no help and laughable.

5 out of 5 stars Words Can nOT Describe................2006-07-04

As a Parsons fashion design student I have found Nancy Riegelman's book to be very helpfull. Words can not describe the amount of inspiration and resourceful information that Colors of Modern Fashion holds. I fell in love with her books when 9 Heads first came out. My mind was blown away when I first caught glimps of her new book Colors of Modern Fashion. Apparently the rest of the world has caught on the this great book because I have seen it throughout my travels in London, Paris, New York, and LA. I have always dreamed of having the skills to make fashion figures. After using 9 Heads and Colors of Modern Fashion I can draw a fashion figure with effortless ease. The book takes you step by step from the basics of the 9 headed fashion figure to the detailed advanced rendering of clothes and fabrics. This book is very chic and stands a good investment for anyone who is interested in fashion.

Book Description

This hardworking reference book is an invaluable tool for art directors, designers, and students working in the fashion, product, and graphic design fields, as well as anyone in the business of visual communication.

The Pattern and Palette Sourcebook is a desktop library of colors and patterns that addresses the professional's real-world needs in working with harmonies and contrasts. Divided into six unique style sections, the book provides readers with 15 appropriate colors for each section, which are then incorporated into 25 different patterns shown in six or eight color variations each. This enables readers to see the dramatic effect colors have in design and helps them better understand how to use color effectively. The book also demonstrates ways of creating designs that are distinctly unique from one another yet hold together in a group. This book is a must have for designers of all disciplines and experience levels.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Wasted Purchase.......2006-04-26

I have to share the same sentiments with a few of the other reviewers. Typically, when a CD-ROM comes with a book of this nature, one would expect the visual content (in this case the patterns displayed in this book) to be available on the disc itself. Not the case here, which I thought was a bit deceiving. It would have been much smarter (and more practical for the end user) for the book author to have provided the patterns as EPS files for use in a vector based software application such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Otherwise what good is it to look at these patterns when you can't easily recreate them?

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-11-13

First of all the content on the CD is not resuable in anyway. It comes with a semi-functional interactive CD that will allow you to print patterns but they are all locked Flash files so you can not use them in illustrator or in any other program.

The book itself is page after page of repeated patterns with slight color adjustment. The patterns are uninspired and dated. I would not recommend this book to anyone if I could give it negative stars i would.

5 out of 5 stars Georgeous patterns you can change color and printout.......2005-11-10

This book is filled with beautiful and diverse patters, some really modern and clean, others more ornate and traditional. The best part is the CD lets you change the colors in the patterns and then print them out for you to use. It's great for everything from professional design jobs to scrapbooking and personal projects.

1 out of 5 stars unhelpful book..........2005-09-24

I bought this book because i thought i can use the pattern in the cd provided, but unfortunately you cant use any of them, they saved it as flash animation format. Unlike the other book I have purchased "the complete pattern library" where you can use any pattern in the book and even change the colors of them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Informational and Focused .......2007-01-24

I was introduced to the book in the 80's when it first came out, and actually attended a seminar when it was something people did. I have been looking for the book since. I still have my identifiers and color swatches from when I went through the seminar to discover the best colors for me to wear.

I would recommend reading the book and really putting it to use. Typically there are shirts and items we all wear that we love. Usually these are the items that hold a key to what you really should be buying in color and style. I would also recommend the book.. "More Dash than Cash" since it is a good way to take the practices into the arena of usage and style.

5 out of 5 stars Still Feels Current 19 Years Later.......2003-03-04

I have not quite finished reading this book but am very excited about it. It really is a good comprehensive guide for men. These are difficult lessons for men to digest and they are presented fairly straightforwardly and in a manner that is simple to understand. Despite the fact that the book is almost twenty years old, it is one of the few where I find the illustrations do not seem particularly out of date. On one point I may have to disagree with Ms Jackson. She states that a man should not mix three patterns when wearing a suit, shirt, and tie. I find that in modern dress, this can distinguish the men from the boys. I do agree that this is somehting that not all men will be able to do effectively so it may be best to avoid it (which may be the authors point in discouraging it). If you want to go one step beyond this book, pick up Alan Flusser's Style and the Man. With these two resources, you will have no excuse for not looking your best every day.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant book for men.......2001-03-24

This is a great style book for men since there are few good ones out there for us and, if we spend too much time thinking about it, some people think we're you know what!

The main thrust of this book is: different color and shades look best on certain people depending on their skin coloring but that isn't limited to race either. The four areas are: winter, spring, summer and fall. Few variations in each one, too.

Now, that alone would give this a four star but the author goes beyond that: she covers hair styles based on face shapes, combining colors, clothes to buy based on your dressing style (these are broken down, too) and advice for what to seek out based on your color styles and your dressing styles. For instance, a more formal type gets certain types of jackets and slacks whereas a casual type gets more jeans and the like.

Excellent book. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A complete guide with clear color and selection advice.......1999-11-23

I'm excited about this book. I love to buy clothes and I often dislike what I have bought almost right away. This gives a comprehensive guide to choosing colors and designing a complete wardrobe. It allows up to 2 years to phase out old and unmatching stuff. The book allows for people who dress casually and are on a moderate budget.

5 out of 5 stars A great money saver, a solid value........1999-08-17

Avoiding to buy wrong colored clothes you never end up using easily saves up the price of this great book! It is very nicely written with excellent photos. I only wish they had included a more complete tear-away palette for shopping! My initial response was that many colors especially in the spring and summer palettes appeared very bright and kind of "feminine" (say bright orchid, raspberry, lavender), but perhaps I'll get used to the idea. I bet the only one's really using those colors are the guys that have read the book!?

My main complaint is the discussion about facial color or tone and other problems related to determining one's own season. It is confusing. The book distinguishes between blue and yellow (golden) based facial prototypes, but also maintains that "cool types" (blueish) may appear yellowish in appearance ("sappy"). Then how can I tell whether yellow or orange clothes harmonize with my own (natural) yellowness or produce the exact opposite, i.e "make me look even more sappy"? How can I tell a "sappy summer" or a "pastel autumn" from a "olive-skinned winter"? Help! The differences seem very subtle indeed. It seems like there actually was a need for more intermediate palettes for all us "between-seasons" types?

I found the manly styles discussion in the end of the book a bit silly. Those prototypes seemed very unreal to me.

These are actually very minor complaints, even if they may not sound like they were, as I was very positively influenced by this book. It has saved me loads of money.

Would have been useful if 98 % of the book was actually in color, not black & white. Was extremely expensive for such a short book printed in this way.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2006-02-22

I just started learning how to render with markers, and this book comes in handy everyday! Great, but simple explanations on how to render different fabrics. Never confusing. A must for every beginning fashion illustrator!

2 out of 5 stars Childish illustrations.......2005-01-19

I bought this book because it had such good reviews, but I was very disappointed with the contents. The title is fashion rendering with color, but most of the illustrations are black and white (very misleading). Plus the illustrations don't look very professional in my opinion. If you have no drawing skills but want to become a fashion designer, then this is the right book for you. Otherwise, don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for starters.......2004-07-22

Bina Abling's Fashion Rendering with Color is a great source of information and consultation for starters on fashion design, and drawing in general. I've just started fashion design lessons, and I do not have many resources regarding this specific subject in my country, so I turned to Amazon.com to find the best, and I did. I've presented a collection of 30 dolls, using some of the styles on this wonderfull book, and I'm doing great, so I recommend this book to anyone who is starting, or just wants to know how to render with markers, and other materials.

I hope you find this review helpful, and have a nice day!

Rendering with Fashion by Bina Albing is a very descriptive and helpful illustrated book for all students. This book has proved to be extremly helpful to the new student in drawing and finishing a fashion product. It gives prompt examples to the learning with colorful examples to help one learn. Idealy all students should get this book for future no matter the experience already learned.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Liked the original better.......2007-07-28

The author has some valid points in this more-or-less updated book on Color Me Beautiful. However, I really liked the first method better. It was simpler to follow, easier to understand, and less time-consuming. But, if you're really into this, it is an interesting read with some good information. Just know that you'll be picking yourself out from twelve different types as opposed to the original four!

4 out of 5 stars Color Me Beautiful Expanded.......2007-07-03

I really found this book helpful in the way of the 12 seasonal groups as opposed to the original CMB which only determines the original Summer, Winter, Autumn and Spring. I have been told (by CMB) that this was created due to the fact that some women were unhappy with the original CMB seasons. The color swatches are not the best in this book and it fails to show all the colors in a palette, shortfalling with a list at the back of the book. It helps if you already know what season you are before reading this book. I had my colors done a couple of years ago by a Color Consultant. Therefore I can determine that I am a Clear Winter from reading this quite easily. I then contacted CMB and purchased a packet of fabric swatches from them. Although someone who isn't sure of their season may find it difficult working it out. The best way to do this is via professional color consultant.

Because I already knew my season and bought swatches from CMB I find this book indespensible. I am very pleased with the Clear Winter color palette I now have. The section on body type is excellent too. Although some of the book is a little dated, much of the advice is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..........2007-04-30

...books on makeup. Not everyone knows "how" to do it well but this is not only a book to "read" but also practical in its uses on how to do makeup well.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful companion to the original.......2006-06-08

Our old "Color Me Beautiful" book was torn to shreds from looking at it so much, so we bought this update. The 12 subcategories were very helpful to me in honing into my season. I was sure I was one of the warm seasons (spring and autumn), but yet I look great in vibrant colors, and not the more toned down ones of spring, or the deep muted colors of autumn. As soon as I turned to the Clear Spring type in this book, I knew it was my type. It's much easier for people who are "between seasons" to find themselves in this book.

My only gripe, like many other reviewers, is that the color swatches look shoddy and like they were colored with many different colored crayons.

2 out of 5 stars Color Me With Confusion!.......2004-06-04

I have NEVER been able to figure out my "season" with either Carole Jackson's Book, or with this one by Mary Spillane. I do not fit into any of the categories they suggest ,even though the seasons are expanded in Spillane's book. (I have ashen blonde hair color like a Summer, olive green/golden brown eyes like an Autumn, and pale translucent ivory skin , like a Spring). The color palletes look like coloring book swatches that were done by a five year old (what are we supposed to gain from that !) Overall a huge disappointment, and only helpful purhaps to those who have well defined seasonal characteristics. For the rest of us, I would suggest basing your color choices on compliments you get from friends and family, and even strangers, and taking your clues from them.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-28

I thought I had to color my hair bright shades to avoid looking dull. Now I realize that my problem was that I wasn't wearing the right colors a lot of the time! This book has taught me how to totally "work" my natural coloring.

I never read Color Me Beautiful aside from a quick flip-through at the library years ago-- I think I was kind of put off because I fell into the "Winter" category but so did a LOT of colorings that were radically different than mine, and trying to weed out which of the winter recommendations applied to me was difficult. This book makes it much more obvious which specific coloring you are, in my opinion.

What I _really_ love about this book is that it not only tells you which colors are best for you, but also gives you LOTS of suggestions on combining colors in a way that is very flattering that I had never thought of before. I tried out some of the color combinations in department stores and was actually surprised by how good they looked. This book had me trying on colors I had previously passed over and I was surprised how well the colors suited me.

I even changed out my lipstick shades and blush from warm to cool shades and I was shocked how much it made my eye color pop and just how much more vibrant I look.

The dressing-for-your-body type was also helpful for me as well as dressing for your style (there were more great color combination recommendations there, too).

Another effect this book had-- I cleaned out my closet of clothes that were in colors that don't suit me and had no second thoughts about it.

I recommend that you get this book, take note of the suggestions, put aside your personal opinions "oh that won't work on me" get yourself to a department store and try things on in the colors and combinations they recommend. You'll be surprised!

I had checked this book out from the library on a whim but now I'm going to order a copy to keep.

    5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Mixed praise and referrals.......2007-07-17

This is a variation on the color system that assigns people to the four seasons. It is an interesting addition to that idea, I was only disappointed that they spent as little time as they did on the color information. A good part of the book is dedicated to body shape and styling tips. By the way, David Kibbe's theories in his book Metamorphosis are the best ideas ever re dressing to suit one's shape, the very best, and yet he seems to get very little attention. People interested in this book might want to check out his, as well. It is out of print, but available used and therefore inexpensive. "Color Me Beautiful," by Carole Jackson is about the original color system--seasonal--and is still a good read.

The latest from Color Me Beautiful is well integrated and insightful. Simple 1-2-3 of Style. although art work on facial shapes needs more refinement / More needed on accessories... Jewelry and purses, etc...but wardrobing is excellent..even to accommodate the ubiquious, deathly Black

4 out of 5 stars Good, helps you figure out this whole Color Season thing!.......2007-01-26

This book definatley helps you figure out which season you are and what to wear, like it says. It has clear pictures and makes a good reference book for those times you need to get some new clothes.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book - Packed with Updated Information.......2007-01-11

I devour all books written on this subject since it is my passion. This book is beautiful looking and talks about much more than color. About half of the book offers suggestions on how to dress your body shape, find your personal style, and apply makeup. The color theory presented here is a modern improvement on the seasonal color system introduced over 20 years ago in Color Me Beautiful. However this book no longer uses seasonal references for color types, possibly as a way to appease women who think that being a 'season' is outdated. But it is based on the very same principles of color intensity, values, and hues. I particularly liked the photos and suggestions for each type on how to wear black when it is not an ideal color for you. But I caution readers that determining your personal color type from a book can be difficult. My own coloring could fit into three different categories based on the checklists of hair, skin, and eye colors suggested. Read the book for its great information but then see a skilled colorist to be professionally typed using an objective hands-on process to confirm your ideal palette. I've seen too many people who have self-analyzed their coloring using a book who have then built entire wardrobes around a less than ideal palette. The results of an accurate color analyis are too wonderful to leave to chance.

Leatrice Eiseman's color concept is the best system for personal coloring I have ever used. Her theory can also be used for home decor as well. Great book!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-03-08

I rate this book high, because I found it to be a refreshing change from the cookie-cutter "Color Me Beautiful" formula. It's not only fun, but accurate!!!! So, if you're sick and tired of someone demanding that you're a "Winter" and better not color your hair red -- but you LOVE being a redhead - this book is for you. Not only does it show you how to look your best through color, but teaches how to safely cross those old fashioned seasonal boundaries of the 80's "Color Me Beautiful" rules.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new in here........2007-01-06

Disappointing book. I think I expected to read something new that I do not find in all the ladies magazines that I get at the grocery store. I didn't find it here.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-08-15

I purchased this book because I "love" color. I devoured the old Color Me Beautiful books years ago and hoped this would be an updated look at colors.

I was disappointed in every way. There is no "meat" to this book at all. The criteria for choosing your colors are pedestrian at best. The first three questions are: Which colors do you like best - stated in three different ways. There are no examples of people in your color family and by their criteria I could easily fit into two of the groups and with very little stretch...the third.

It's a very short book and the ideas are never fully supported. It could have been expanded and made much better. Save your money on this one. I'm keeping it...so I guess that says something, but there's better stuff available.

The only plus is they reference Pantone colors for each of the swatches so that you can get an actual, correct color (IF you own a color fan, which I do BUT unless you are in a job that utilizes it, the average person would not have access to nor choose to purchase this pricey piece of goods.)

If you are buying this to help you with a new wardrobe, save your money and go for the old CMB.

4 out of 5 stars Easy, Sensible and Attractive.......2006-07-12

This book is a great read and a good introduction to the concept of color palettes arranged by time of day. The book is easy to understand and the layout is very pleasing and attractive. The suggested color combinations and photographs included are very effective-what I've always expected in a book dealing with such a visual topic but have rarely found.

The only reason I rate the book a "4" instead of a "5" is because some of the sections, the men's section for example, are too brief and really just touch on the concept outlined.

A worthwhile investment for up-to-date information regarding color and preparing a pleasing wardrobe.

5 out of 5 stars As A Makeup Artist and Clothing Designer, I Refer to This Constantly.......2006-10-27

When I bought this book, it was at a clearance outlet center, and I figured that it was just another Color Me Beautiful knockoff. I was not expected a whole lot.

What I ended up getting, however, was one of the most valuable books in my collection. I am an artist, makeup artist, and clothing designer, and this book answers questions that Color Me Beautiful never seemed to answer.

Why am I bored with autumn colors- I want to wear bold colors, but autumn is so dull?

Why do I seem to be able to cross over from one season to another and make it work?

What if I look good in colors not from my season?

Many of these questions are answered in this book which divides the four color seasons into 12 seasons- each season has three dimensions- Gentle, Classic, and Bold.

As an artist, I am able to cross from one season to another with hair changes, makeup changes and clothing changes and make it work, but I use the information in this book to fine tune everything.

Although the other information in the book can be a bit dated, there is a decent amount of helpful information that you can glean if you are willing to wade through the philosophy and extraneous stuff in there that might not apply to you.

I use the color charts in this book constantly - not only for makeup and clothing, but for paintings when I am looking to do a portrait with just the right colors in it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to learn about color and wants to look better in their new hair color or clothing.

4 out of 5 stars "Uniquely You", by Betty Nethery :.......2003-03-12

I was most impressed with the obvious calibre of this authoress's character and insights. It is much more than a fashion book. The only lack is that it was written way back when, and it needs to be updated into 2003 color charts and the way women wear amkeup and clothing styles. This book is a classic, though.
The concepts are timeless, as is the general advice.
I appreciated the Christian influence of the book. Very tasteful and appropriate.
I particularly likes the advice about how to dress parts of your body you want to hide. I have not seen this advice anywhere else. She looks beautiful on the cover of her book, but blue eyeshadow is definitely out of style now. Also, no one wears bow-tie secretary blouses anymore either.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Period Piece.......2002-11-08

"Uniquely You" combines sound and thorough fashion advice with a weird, regressive Christian take on a woman's place. At times a throwback to the days of "The Total Woman", this book may offend some, but others will find a great deal of unintentional humour. If a reader can disregard the intrusive bible quotes, and get past the ludicrous chapter on helping your husband dress himself (no, this is not meant for spouses of paraplegics) there is quite a bit of good information on colour and style. Mind you, the model on the cover wears bright blue eyeshadow, so one might choose to read with a grain of salt handy.

5 out of 5 stars Want to look "real", but better? This'll do it!.......1997-10-11

This book is a classic for me. I now know my color season and style, yet still I gravitate back again and again to the only copies I know of...one at the library and one at my friend's house. Both are falling apart with use, but the concepts are ever new and fresh. I don't grow tired of reading it, even when I have to crane my neck to read the pages that have fallen on the floor. This book will meet you on a comfortable level somewhere between the latest fashion magazine and the way you look when you get up in the morning. And it will take you as far as you want to go from there.

5 out of 5 stars The best information on color analysis and image.......2000-06-25

By far this book has the latest information on color analysis and image. As a Color Consultant and Image Consultant, I have used this book and its theory on all my clients. I have also recommended this book for each of my clients as a manual that they can refer to over and over again. This book is inspiring and very informative, with lots of pictures of before and afters. The book is sectioned for each category, such as make-up, color analysis, wardrobe recommendations, and hair-styles. Mary Spillane's best book so far! Every woman should have this book!
