I recently attended Brooklyn College and as a Children's Studies minor I found this book invaluable to studying children's rights. The United Nations Convention Rights of the Child is summarized in the text. It is a document that consists of the rights of children regarding their rights to education, human rights, legal rights etc. There are also several law cases outlined regarding children. If you are a law student, sociology, psychology, humanities major, you need this book. If you are a teacher, college professor, social worker, parent or deal with children on any level, you need this book. I wish I had known of it earlier in my college career.

Book Description

"These studies . . . not only illuminate the past with a fierce and probing light but also raise, with nuance and power, fundamental issues of interpretation and method."--from the Foreword by Caroline Walker Bynum

Female saints, mystics, and visionaries have been much studied in recent years. Relatively little attention has been paid, however, to the ways in which their experiences and voices were mediated by the men who often composed their vitae, served as their editors and scribes, or otherwise encouraged, protected, and collaborated with the women in their writing projects. What strategies can be employed to discern and distinguish the voices of these high and late medieval women from those of their scribes and confessors? In those rare cases where we have both the women's own writings and writings about them by their male contemporaries, how do the women's self-portrayals diverge from the male portrayals of them? Finally, to what extent are these portrayals of sanctity by the saints and their contemporaries influenced not so much by gender as by genre?

Catherine Mooney brings together a distinguished group of contributors who explore these and other issues as they relate to seven holy women and their male interpreters and one male saint who claims to incorporate the words of a female follower in an account of his own life.

5 out of 5 stars In Their Own Words.......2001-04-18

Gendered Voices is a book that will change your whole outlook. It is investigative journalism and medieval history tied up in a very informative package. Revealing the deliberate biographical twisting of women's lives by men so that one size fits all and that size is exactly what is culturally expected is the topic of this beautifully written book. For anyone seriously interested in the lives of women medieval mystics and medieval religious movements in general, this book is an absolute necessity. The twisting and fabrication of hagiographies into a male acceptable gruel without texture or flavor has misrepresented and belittled the lives of these fascinating women. This book helps set the record straight.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book for Women in the Health Care Industry.......2007-04-10

This book is excellent for any woman interested in pursuing a leadership role in healthcare. As a woman who is currently employed in the healthcare industry, it was refreshing to learn that the "glass ceiling" really does exist, and isn't just in most of our minds. This book reveals many essential steps women can take on their rise to the top. Ms. Robinson-Walker gives insightful examples of the healthcare environment and the reality of what women face on a daily basis. Her contributions by many within the industry - both male and female - shine a light on what the real perceptions are of women in health care. It was important to hear what our male counterparts thought of our capabilities as leaders. What I found most intriguing about this book, is the detailed steps of what women can do to overcome many of the obstacles that currently exist. There were many introspective ideas that I never would have considered, yet, after reading the book, they made perfect sense. The suggestions on how we can break through the glass ceiling are realistic and within anyone's reach.
This book is well organized from beginning to end. Not only does she ask the questions, but she provides the answers. All aspects of health care leadership are represented, from clinical to administrative. With the information obtained in this book, I have a renewed ambition of reaching the top! This book should be a must read for any young woman contemplating a career in the health care industry, even if it's in a clinical role. This would be a great book to give as a graduation gift to any young woman entering college or nursing school. If you are currently in the industry and have aspirations to move into a senior level management position, take this book to a quiet spot and soak in every word!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, a must read for anyone in the business world........1999-08-10

I am not a manager in the healthcare industry. However, I work in office support in the healthcare industry. Ms. Robinson-Walker's book was a tremendous inspiration to me during a difficult time. I found that I was enlightened and educated by the material addressed. I particularly liked the personal stories. This book also validated that the problems were not me, but the system.

I recommend this book not only for managers but for anyone who works in a business environment. From the mailroom clerk to the CEO.

Thank you so much.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every leader; it teaches us how to lead!.......1999-02-27

An extremely well organized and written book with wonderful attention to current literature and perspectives on gender and leadership. The variety that characterizes the national and international experts who have contributed their personal stories to the book provides us with the opportunity to learn from the leaders and experience the wisdom they have to offer. This book makes a very important addition to the literature and helps teach us all how to become more reflective and effective leaders.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at women leaders in health care........1999-02-18

Robinson-Walker frames her book using the following questions: Why do women of undisputed talent opt out of senior roles? Why are some not even considered even if qualified? Why do others not choose developmental opportunities leading to positions of leadership? Utilizing a thorough review of literature and interviews with nearly 100 leading female and male health care executives from a variety of disciplines, the author weaves their stories into a compelling analysis. She notes that women, who comprise 85% of U.S.healthcare workeers, fill little more than a third of all manageent roles. The author goes on to address the stumbling blocks presented in the literature and described by those who participated in interviews. Moving beyond the specific issues and challenges experienced by women seeking and experiencing leadership, Robinson-Walker concludes the book with suggestions for "reframing" our thinking about ways in which to achieve a more productive balance of women and men in health care leadership roles.

Book Description

One of the greatest American poets of the twentieth century, Langston Hughes influenced many writers -- including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker. In this moving and richly detailed portrait, she celebrates the life of the man who fell in love with books at a young age and grew up to write about Black people as he saw them: happy, mad, sad, and beautiful. Illustrated with stunning paintings by Catherine Deeter, this book will introduce a whole new generation to the life and works of an extraordinary man.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American poet.......2005-06-09

This is a very touching book for both children and adults alike. The portrait of America in another era is accurate and informative for young minds to understand how things were once upon a time. The biographical sketch relays the influnces early on in Langston Hughes life which shaped him to become one of the great poets of the twentieth century, in spite of racism. His father lived in Mexico and had a disregard for black people who seperated himself to the extent of living in Mexico. Although he(Langston's father) did well for himself in Mexico he did not support his son. The major exception was sending him regretfully to Columbia University which Langston eventually dropped out of much to his fathers displeasure. Hughes felt isolated and much more relaxed in nearby Harlem. Langston Hughes was a man of letters that he inherited from the story telling his grandmother told him. His love for his culture translated into many books of poetry. Alice Walker is the writer of this children's book and the author of "The Color Purple," and was tremendously influenced by Hughes himself who she met as a college student. The illustrations are pretty realistic and further document the story. The book is easy enough for youngsters and may also be good material for middle school readers who have not yet achieved grade level profiency. It is an inspirational story that may get a youngster motivated to write or read further.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent picturebook biography.......2002-02-04

Catherine Deeter's paintings accompany this celebration of poet Langston Hughes' life, which reads like fiction as it surveys the influences on Hughes' career and the motivations behind his writings and life. An excellent picturebook biography, this requires reading skills but will appeal to grades 2-4.

But the enchantress has one weakness: a son, Kari, banished to a forbidding fortress in the north, never seen by the Jarl's people. In secret they wonder: Are the rumors true? Was he born a monster?

Now Jessa and her cousin Thorkil have been exiled to the north, and if they survive the journey, they will find the truth: Is Kari a beast? Or the means to stop the sorceress?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Different.......2007-02-11

I read a lot of young adult fiction and this book really stood out to me. It has a much more adult theme to it, with very full characters that make decisions that matter. While this is one volume it has three distinct stories in it surrounding Jessa and the increasingly serious fights with the evil Gudrun. I would highly recommend this book for people who love fantasy, especially fantasy that has a myth or saga quality to it. For example Troll Fell or Clovermead.

5 out of 5 stars A Snowy Surprise: Norse Fantasy Tales.......2006-06-13

I picked this up because I needed something to read over my lunchbreak. I wasn't expecting much--lately all the epic fantasy stuff I've found tends to be either pedestrian and cliched or monstrously complex and spread over many volumes. Let's just say the book followed me back from lunch onto the subway, and was read intently for several hours before I turned the last page. The snow cast setting was immediately accessible and stunningly described. The main characters came to life as natural elements in the setting. The story wove skillfully from first page to last. This volume is actually made up of three stories, each about 150 pages long. The three tales tell the ongoing story of our band of heroes, but each is complete unto itself. I believe they were orginally published in Britain as three separate volumes: The Snow-walker's Son, The Empty Hand, and The Soul Thieves.

Gudrun, a strange and sorcerous woman of great power and cruelty, has one weakness. That weakness is her son, Kari. Almost no one has seen Kari since he was born, and rumors abound that he is some sort of monster. Exiled to a far northern fortress of Thrasirshall, he has been alone but for his guardian for years while Gudrun and her chieftan husband have tyrannized the people. Now two young people are sent to join Kari in his exile--Jessa and Thorkil. Will they meet a monster? An enemy? Or perhaps . . . a new ally against Gudrun? In this first book we meet a delightful cast of characters, some more developed than others. Most notable among them is Jessa, our young protagonist equipped with enough courage and wisdom to survive her adventures and see the truth and Kari, the Snow-walker's son, the strange being with a powerful and fearful inheritance he doesn't want and can't avoid. Note to readers, I'll outline briefly the plots two and three below, so be aware there will be mild spoilers.

Book two continues our story of Jarlshold. While Gudrun has been defeated, she is not gone, nor has she forgotten Jarlshold. A mysterious creature has arrived in the land, a creature of sorcery and hunger that kills without mercy. Rumors of distrust and betrayal run rampant as people begin to look at Kari with fear and suspicion--is he the one who has created this creature? It's going to take Kari's friends banding together with the help of a young man called Hakon the Empty Handed, to set things right in the hold. In Book three, Gudrun makes good on her threat to steal from the Jarl the thing he loves most, now Kari and his friends must journey beyond the edge of the world to Gudrun's hall in order to end Gudrun's sorcery once and for all.

It is through Jessa's eyes that we see a good portion of this story. She's a delightful character, confident, plenty of courage, and not at all conflicted about her role or who she is. While fantasy stories where the girls are working hard to be considered as good or better than boys are enjoyable in their own right, it's nice to read one where the girl in question has no doubt where she stands and neither do the men who befriend her. But, this isn't really Jessa's story. It's Kari's. Kari is the strange and sorcerous figure cursed with power and constantly having to face the price of that power. That said, these tales are not in-depth character studies, but adventure tales, full of action and event. Ms. Fisher's confident and elegant writing style never falters, providing an icily beautiful backdrop for her story. This is a tale that pulls strongly on the Norse legends and sagas without allowing them to overtake the plot. There are shades of Beowulf here as well--it was no surprise to find that the chapter opening quotes for book 2 are taken from Beowulf. The chapter openings for books 1 and 3 come from a collection of Norse Poems. Ms. Fisher has true grasp of her mythos and setting for this set of tales--the society is that of the holds and halls of Beowulf. It breaks the story out of the rather tired medieval mode with its more familiar kings and dragons and knights in armor. Given all this, it's a light read--with the books themselves only about 150 pages, no story can cover too much ground. The telling is tight and swift and definitely page-turning. The author never forgets to call in the setting at hand, and while the characters don't have the depth a longer story might call for, they aren't one-dimensional chess pieces either. The amount of graphic violence is pretty light considering the story--it's more concerned with the sorcerous struggle than any sort of warfare. I'd say this book would be appropriate for young teens and older readers, particularly those who enjoy fantasy adventure and may be looking for something new to whet their appetites.

This may not be for readers who prefer a more Harry Potter style school story fantasy, but for epic fantasy readers it should be a good fit. Those who enjoy this will probably also like the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins and may also want to check out Goose Girl by Sharon Hale.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down.......2006-04-21

I picked this book up because I wanted to read a story related to Norse mythology and was intrigued by the name Gudrun, the wife of mythology's Sigurd. I was hoping for more mythological crossovers, but though I was disappointed in there only being a few of these, I was so enthralled by the story, I didn't mind.

Jessa is a great lead character with spunk and determination. I like how she is trusted by the male characters as an equal, how she is respected by the Jarl as well as by the bard Skapti and Kari who is clearly more powerful than she.

The action is non-stop and our heroes are often in peril. This makes for a page-turning adventure I could not put down. I enjoyed The Snow-walker's Son and The Empty Hand so much, I can't bring myself to finish The Soul Thieves. I am putting it off until I have time to read all day and can enjoy its greatness all at once.

I especially liked the details about the ginungagap and the world serpent. Additionally Fisher's setting details are vivid and remind me of the winters here in Minnesota.

1 out of 5 stars do not read........2005-11-28

This book was horrible, in my opinion. And I will give reasons.

For those of you, like me, who enjoy a book that has deep development and interesting characters, with more to them than a name, this book is NOT for you. Not only are the characters incredibly weak in personality to a point where you cannot get at all attached to this book in any way, the plot just if ridiculous. The fact that this book was combined from THREE SEPARATE novels is insanely horrible. Just reading the "first book" was like reading a chapter to a story -- it ends with little said in it to be wanting the reader to continue and little established.

I could not finish this book because it was so horrible, by the "second book" I just tossed it aside. There is not adventure, no sense of being involved in a fantastic tale of intrigue, fantasy, or warmth, or even EVIL to the point where I hate or like anything. I mean -- come on? When I read a book I want to be INVOLVED. I want to be able to relate to characters, to FEEL the characters, to know them...and the adventure, it better be something, not "let us trape around for a while, perhaps battling one or two foes then kill the a witch with little difficulty".

Don't read if you happen to like a very interesting plot, or at least decent one, developed characters, villians who can actually be recognized as being somewhat threatening and put up a hell of a good fight before inevitably being felled.

Other than this nothing to say.

    5 out of 5 stars A Good workbook........2007-07-15

I have seen other books that focus on specific topics. These workbooks just cover a general intro to the bible. They are easy to follow and have maps, questions, and blanks for you to write in. I am looking forward to finishing it and starting with the Old Testament version.

    5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-02-27

I really liked this book. I grew up as an MK so I could relate to a lot of what the characters felt and were going through. And the things I couldn't relate to, I could at least understand where they were coming from. Very thought-provoking.

4 out of 5 stars familiar, but very different.......2005-07-07

Having graduated from the same missionary boarding school as Palmer, but over a decade later (I think), our experiences were quite different. Although we still ate from metal trays in the 1980's, there were neither metal fragments or worms in our cafeteria meals. This barely fictional account vividly describes the wonder and beauty some of us found as children in Africa, while candidly portraying the inner conflict felt by many missionaries and their children as a balance is sought between "God's work" and what is best for the family.

Perhaps in part because I entered boarding school as a teenager and not a small child, I never felt the abandonment the characters in this book describe, but I had friends and siblings whose memories are not as warm as mine and who struggled for years to come to terms with being "sent away".

This book will touch raw nerves for many involved with missions and that will be a good thing if it opens eyes and hearts to the often unspoken needs and hidden pain of missionary children. As a public school teacher in the U.S., I see many children in pain and with difficult or even awful lives, but missionary children are sometimes the last ones to show their pain because it's so important to put on a happy face.

I could go on and on...obviously this book moved me deeply. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was that I hope people don't think that the school represented by "KCA" in the book is the way Palmer describes it. If it ever was that bad, it changed long ago. For a thorough history of the school, Rift Valley Academy, see "School in the Clouds," by Phil Dow, another alumnus.

3 out of 5 stars The Happy Room.......2004-01-12

I found this book to be disturbing and depressing. If you like a lot of dialogue, you'll LOVE this book. If you had a happy childhood in a loving family, you'll be surprised by the scars some people carry into adulthood. If you had a not so happy
childhood in a not so loving family, you'll dredge up a lot of memories you would rather leave buried. Truth is, no matter how hard parents try to do what is best for their children, the kids rarely think they "measured up" as parents. Sad situation on all sides. I didn't feel better after reading this book! AM in Texas

4 out of 5 stars A book about how parents and children communicate.......2003-05-08

As an MK (missionary kid) caregiver who raised a family overseas, I found this book compelling. Some may be offended, viewing it as a smear of boarding schools, but I found it to be less about boarding school, and more about how children and their parents communicate, or fail to communicate.
As a parent, this book challenged me to listen to my children, not telling them what to think, but giving them the freedom to be honest and listening to the message behind their words. I would recommend this book to missionary parents as a thought-provoking read.

    4 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2002-11-12

You never know what life is like somewhere else. This book captivates ever aspect of a child's view on life in another country compared to the life they life as an adult in America. The hardships and the joyous moments all caught in this excellent book.
