5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource.......2006-02-01

I am in the Bridal Alterations business and also sew weddings on the side. I am just starting out and wanted to learn more about the insides of wedding gowns. I have used other books by these women (Fit for Real People) to teach sewing classes in local fabric stores and knew they'd put out a great product. Inside they tell you what fabrics to use for interlining, interfacing, step by step construction, patern fitting, and more. There's even a checklist for constructing a wedding gown and yardage and instructions for making petticoats. I REALLY recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars A Good Guide, But Know How to Sew.......2002-12-12

I was toying with the idea of making my own dress and bought this book. The author is very knowledgeable and the text is well-written. However, if you are a novice you do not want to ACTUALLY attempt a dress without either a.)guidance, or b.)other books to walk you through. This is written for those who truly understand patterns and sewing. However, if you don't sew it is a great book to understand what things you should be looking for if you are having it made by a dressmaker, and the types of fabric/necklines/veils, etc. If you're expecting a step-by-step this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-06-07

Well written, clearly illustrated, great on all the details. Obviously written by a pro who is very creative! Highly recommended even if you don't plan to sew your own--you will get lots of ideas to have the perfect dress made for your special day!

Though ostensibly a how-to manual on wedding gown construction, this magnificent book teaches all about advanced dressmaking skills, and its principles can be applied to creating many other types of haute-couture-style gowns. The very thorough text details all aspects of fabrics and construction: the unique characteristics of each type of fashion fabric, including extensive information on manipulating lace; preparing the muslin mockup (a necessary first step to ensure a perfect fit); adjusting the bodice, sleeves, and skirt and joining them all together; adding ornamentation; and handling bustles and trains. The final chapter presents all the specifics of making four gowns of different styles. The novice and even the advanced sewer will learn much here, and perhaps best of all, pattern-drafting experience is not required--the author works her transformations on purchased patterns. If you're ambitious enough to make your own wedding gown, this book is absolutely essential, but even if you're hiring someone else to custom-make your gown, you'll find this an invaluable guide. And anyone pursuing a dressmaking career should have this important reference work on the shelf. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-02-02

I bought this in addition to Bridal Gowns:How to Make the Wedding Dress of Your Dreams. This book had some different ways of approaching the same topics in the other book so it was nice to have a different perspective. She goes into detail on fabrics and lace and how to use them, bustles, embellishents and takes you step by step through the making of several of the gowns you see in full color in the "gallery" in the front of the book. Also includes detailed construction techniques to give the dress a couture look inside and out. I would highly recommend this book!

This is a very good book with all the details you ever want to know on how to sew a wedding gown.

I would recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars fine techniques but outdatet style for Europe.......2005-09-03

If you have a strong interest in making bodices this is a good book to add to your collection.
For me, the only problem is the limmited amount of techniques being described.
Susan Khalje for me is someone who really knows what she's talking about, but she seems a little conservative. ( style wise )
Then again, i'm european and i have this problem with more books from the us.
But, i am glad i have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for all sewing enthusiasts.......2001-07-24

I bought this book never having heard of the author before. I was fairly "blown away" by the high quality of the information offered, the wonderful works shown and the fact that this author obviously cares about those who will use her book. She provides her readers with some of the best, complete and accurate information I have ever seen written in a book. The reader (in this case me) knows that she/he is being provided with information of the highest standard, the author doesn't withhold important facts and obviously loves what she does as seen in the quality work she produces. Sewing from the soul.

I don't do Bridal Sewing but am interested in Couture Sewing. This book is one of the finest on the subject. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

When her ex-boyfriend, Trip, gets engaged to Hollywood's latest It Girl, Manhattan attorney Brooke Miller plans to attend the wedding. Who says a modern girl can't stay friends with her ex? Besides, Brooke's got her sexy Scottish fiancé, Douglas, to take as her date. Okay, so maybe he's not exactly her fiancé, but they're living together in his apartment, so she'll be getting the ring any minute, right? Wrong.

After a fight leaves her without a boyfriend (much less a fiancé) just days before the wedding, Brooke faces the ultimate humiliation of attending her ex-boyfriend's nuptials alone. Desperate to find a replacement to fill Douglas's kilt, Brooke concocts an outrageous plan to survive the wedding and win the man of her dreams, all with her dignity ever-so-slightly intact.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Loved This Book!.......2007-10-02

What a great read - and from a first-timer, at that! I think Ms. Janowitz has a fantastic future in the literary field. Being in the legal profession myself, I enjoyed her spot-on references regarding Brooke's legal career. I must say that the only "dumb" thing about Brooke was her total blindness to Jack's affection for her. Bless her heart, she just didn't get it for awhile. But, she's a very smart, likable character that you can't help rooting for.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book and I can't wait to hear more from this author.

5 out of 5 stars a step above chick-lit.......2007-06-03

Maybe it's because the author is as smart and successful as her main character (or moreso?), but it's hard to believe this is Janowitz's first novel - this was a great read, & I only regret that I finished it too quickly - write a sequel, Brenda -- now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-05-31

What a great read!!! Ms. Janowitz has taken a sensitive subject and infused it with humor. I hope there is a sequel. Go buy this book!!1

5 out of 5 stars Smart and funny and warmhearted.......2007-05-26

This book was hilarious! What I liked the most was that, even though it's ostensibly "light" and funny, its main characters were written carefully and with great love, so you really feel for them and want them to be happy. That brought the book to another level, and made the book a really engaging and rewarding read.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome hysterical debut .......2007-05-01

Self-involved Manhattan attorney Brooke Miller has always had a competitive relationship with her ex-boyfriend Trip. When he calls to tell her that he is getting married, she can't fathom him beating her to the aisle (with THE Hollywood It Girl no less), so she blurts out that she and her sexy Scottish lover Douglas are also engaged. The only problem is that Douglas has decided to propose to someone else. And the Magic 8-Ball confirms that the parting is for good. Over cocktails and scheming with her best buds and fellow attorneys Vanessa and Jack, she hatches a plan to have Jack pose as Douglas at the LA wedding so she can attend with her dignity "ever-so-slightly intact", forcing him to don a kilt and a Scottish accent that often travels down under at the most inopportune times. There's nothing Jack won't do for her; he just has to convince her that Douglas was all wrong for her.

Janowitz has penned a hysterical debut novel. Told in first person, we see Brooke in all her scatter-brained glory and even start to believe that there's a method to her one-track minded madness. Vanessa and Jack are both well drawn articulate yet sarcastic characters, and the camaraderie among the trio is believable, while other secondary characters - particularly Douglas - are a bit under-developed. I laughed aloud on this one, often disrupting my carpool riders to read excerpts of Brooke's clever observations and pop culture references ("Way to go Paula!"). I am looking forward to more offerings from this gifted and witty author.

Book Description

Bridesmaid dresses -- what are they good for? We've got to pay for them, wear them, and then find a spot for them in the back of the closet. Our best women friends, suddenly transformed into tasteful-white-dress-wearing brides, tell us, "You'll be able to wear this bridesmaid dress again." But we know better.

101 Uses for a Bridesmaid Dress, tongue firmly in cheek, pokes fun at the hopelessly horrible dress that a bride asks her "court" to don. These whimsical illustrations and silly suggestions, from cocktail napkins and shower curtains, to pony blankets and frilly jock straps, are a hilarious antidote to the bridesmaid dresses we'll never wear again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Attention Bridezillas: Your bridesmaids will appreciate the humor.......2007-06-26

I have to laugh at some of the reviews expecting "truly practical" uses for a bridesmaids dress. Attention bridezillas: no matter how beautiful you think the dresses are, they aren't! So stop taking you, your wedding and your ugly bridesmaids dresses so seriously and add some humor to the event, your bridesmaids will appreciate.

And, if you find that spending under $20 on a bridesmaids gift is too much as one reviewer wrote, do yourself a favor, cancel your wedding, because friends that are willing to put on an ugly bridesmaid dress, buy you shower and wedding presents, deserve to do it for someone that is willing to thank them properly and a gift of under $20 doesn't even begin to say thank you to these women for being a part of your special day.

This book will bring a smile to anyone that has ever worn a bridesmaids dress. I look forward to my bridesmaids using this book to ignite some creativity of things they can do with their dress now that the wedding is over. In fact, I think I'll be disappointed if they don't do something outrageous with the dresses!

Remember, above all your wedding should be about your deep love for one another, and celebrating that love--in other words HAVE FUN! This book will get your bridesmaids on the right start.

5 out of 5 stars Fun bridesmaid gift.......2006-08-26

I made gift bags for my bridesmaid and included these cute books - I've always been a fan of little books like this, so it was perfect for me to give.

4 out of 5 stars Very Cute!.......2005-09-03

I bought his book to give to my bridesmaids as a gift. It is really cute. It's not meant to take seriously though. Very funny! I guess you could use some of the idea in the book. I hope they like it. My mom thought it was a cute idea. I also recommended it to a friend of mine who is getting married the week before me.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2004-11-21

I wish I had seen some of the reviews on this website before I wasted my money on this book. I was expecting 101 practical ideas and felt so ripped off when I read the book...which took about 2 minutes. Definitely not the book to get if you want useful suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Gift for Bride's Maids.......2003-10-22

I gave my bridemaids this book at the my bridesmaid brunch. We began to read through it. Other tables were looking at us because we were not doing a very good job of not laughing outloud. One of the better humor books I have seen for this topic. Helped me enjoy my wedding even more.

A great gift for past bridemaids too.

Book Description

A mystery for anyone who has ever hated a friend's boyfriend. . .

Rachel Benjamin and her friends aren't looking forward to Emma's wedding. The groom is a rat, and nobody can understand what Emma sees in him. So when he turns up dead in the morning of the ceremony, no one in the wedding party is all that upset. Not even Emma.

Rachel, who had the good fortune to find Richard floating facedown in the pool, is feeling as if she's woken up in an Agatha Christie novel. It doesn't help that everyone around her seems to have a motive for murder. So, while the cops detain Emma's family and friends at her isolated Adirondacks compound for the weekend, Rachel, an investment banker by trade, makes like Miss Marple (minus the gray hair and sensible shoes) and does some digging of her own. Her investigation gets especially tricky when Peter Forrest, the too-good-to-be-true best man, turns out to be the number-one love interest and her number-one suspect. And Rachel can't help remembering the solemn pact she and her friends made back in college--a promise to rescue each other from bad relationships, using any means required. Has someone taken the pact too far?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quick Read.......2006-09-15

I enjoyed reading this book. I thought the characters were great and their relationship with each other plausible. I did however find some of the events in the book to be a bit unrealistic. Despite that, it keeps you reading and guessing until the end. I went on to read Sturman's 2nd book and found it equally, if not more, enticing.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling.......2006-05-16

I have never reviewed a book online before, but was motivated to in this case by how appalling I found ?The Pact?.

The prose is childish and unengaging. A cliche is used wherever there is an opportunity (and this is about 5-7 times per page). It took a great deal of effort to keep ploughing through this book, when everything about the style screamed that it was by someone with nothing original or interesting to communicate.

I will skip over the weak plot, though much could be said about it, and head straight to the worst aspect of this novel; the characters. Each and every one of them is shallow or actively repellant. Especially the heroine. She drips arrogance and superficiality and, most unfortunately, this seems to reflect the personality of the author. The question, of course, is why anyone would represent themselves as such a mediocre individual. Constantly name-dropping, judgemental and shallow. I cannot fathom why anyone would find this character appealing.

I cannot advise against reading this book more strongly.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, Quick Read.......2006-02-09

I loved that this story kept me wondering for so long. There were no "dead" spots in the story, it moved along quite nicely, frequently adding new clues to the mystery. At the climax of the story, I serioulsy could not read it fast enough, it was so good! I recommend this to anyone who wants a fun "whodunit" to read.

5 out of 5 stars Had to Keep Reading..........2006-01-18

I'm usually not a fan of mysteries, but I found that I really liked The Pact a lot. I think the author was able to balance the book's mystery element with a good dose of chick-lit. While I felt very anxious to keep reading in order to see who the murderer was, I found I was also curious as to the resolution of the main character's romantic situation. Overall, a very quick, fun read, with just enough mystery to keep a non-mystery fan interested.

2 out of 5 stars Very So-So.......2005-09-17

I guess I'm in the minority on this book. It had a couple of amusing spots, but overall it was weak. Much was made of the heroine's intelligence, yet she jumps to conclusions about who committed the murder twice. She also panics, at one point acting like a silly gothic novel heroine. The whole weekend in the isolated house murder plot was weak, with the police being almost non-entities, but interviewing everyone one at a time in a room just like an Agatha Christie novel. The problem is that Christie novels were written about 70 or more years ago. Trying to write a story like that, but set in the present day doesn't work for me in this case. It didn't seem even remotely realistic. In addition, the characters were overblown, almost caricatures of themselves. As an example, Richard (the murder victim) couldn't just be unpleasant or unlikeable, he was the most despicable character imaginable. Apparently, the only crime he didn't commit was murder. Also, the dialogue felt contrived and forced. Since Rachel was getting ready for a meeting at work on Monday morning, and no one asked how long the police would require them to stay in the house, I knew they were all expecting the murder to be solved by Sunday evening. How convenient. Although I thought that this book was going to be just the kind of mystery I like to read, it wasn't. I think there are other chick-lit books that are more intelligent AND amusing out there.

Book Description

The relationship between a mother and daughter is often fraught-but never so much as during the preparations for a daughter's wedding. Who better to offer a fresh perspective on weddings than the mother of the bride? And who better to describe it -- the agony and the ecstasy -- than Ilene "Gingy" Beckerman, who's married off three daughters and remembers it all very clearly.

--The high cost of wedding cakes: "I could have had a lifetime supply of Entenmann's chocolate doughnuts!"

--Bridesmaid dresses: "What do five girls-one short, one tall, one buxom, one flat, one who gave birth a month ago-have in common? A bridesmaid's dress they hate."

--Mother-of-the-bride dresses: "I tried on green velvet. A Rodney Dangerfield line came to me: 'If that dress had pockets, you'd look like a pool table.' The dress had pockets."

--And, finally, the sight of her daughter walking down the aisle: "My daughter was Cinderella, Snow White, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy. But better."

Gingy looks at the bride-to-be and sees the teenager who wanted Bo Derek braids, the little girl she taught to dance to the tune of "Me and My Shadow," the beautiful baby, the miracle she gave birth to decades earlier. And now, en route to the aisle, their relationship is tested in ways Gingy never imagined.

Beckerman simply and brilliantly describes the highs and lows of life with an adult daughter. What emerges is a poignant and telling story.

4 out of 5 stars humor for mother of the bride.......2007-07-23

I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!

5 out of 5 stars Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress.......2007-07-05

What a great book to give the 1st time mother of the bride at the bridal shower. It puts things in perspective! I recommend they read it a couple of days before the wedding.

5 out of 5 stars Survival guide for M.O.B!!.......2005-05-20

This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you know the drill =).......2003-06-18

This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Gift.......2000-10-12

When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!

The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.

I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.

And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

Book Description

July 29,1981—The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer is one of the iconic moments of the twentieth century. It remains a day embedded in the memory of millions of people around the world—over 800 million people were watching at home on television.

Of all the images from the day itself, the one that springs to mind immediately is that of Diana's arrival at St. Paul's Cathedral in the glass carriage and the public's first glimpse of the best kept secret of the day: the royal wedding dress.

For the young designers, David Emanuel and Elizabeth Emanuel creating Diana's wedding dress was "a fairytale come true." Having only been introduced to Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981, the Emanuels quickly became one of her favored designers, which lead to a telephone call in March 1981 that would change their lives forever.

Officially commissioned by Buckingham Palace, the Emanuels set about designing a dress that would never be forgotten. Each step of the process was completed in total secrecy to ensure that no one, especially the world's press, got a glimpse of the famous dress until that glorious July day.

5 out of 5 stars "A Dress for Diana" is a Book to Treasure.......2007-08-15

I was amazed to find this book, which I had never seen, on Amazon for a wonderful price.
Filled with lovely anecdotes on all the wedding details, this book was written before the "fairy-tale marriage" was revealed to be a nightmarish sham of deciet and betrayal. If Diana was starry-eyed, so were we--and we wanted to be.
A labor of love, "A Dress for Diana" is rich with lavish details, such as the history of the silks and laces used and where they came from, close-ups of laces, shoes, patterns, and toilles(dress samples made in muslin during the design process.)
Did you know that the Emmanuels made a perfect miniature of Diana's dress as a gift for her, as did her shoe designer? Nor did I, until I read this book.
"A Dress for Diana" is a singular and fascinating look at an unforgettable time in history. If you love Her Royal Highness,Diana, Princess of Wales, or if you have an interest in English history, you will want this book, for it is one to treasure. The Emanuels have authored an exquisite tribute with a unique point of view.

5 out of 5 stars A closer look.......2007-07-30

This is an excellent book for those of us who watched the royal wedding at that time--and were so fascinated with that dress--and train. Although there were unexpected problems with the dress such as how do you fit a dress with an exceptionally long train into the small royal wedding carriage?--nevertheless, the dress was one of a kind--and forever will fascinate Diana fans throughout the world.

The book shares the moment-by-moment details of the making of the dress as well as some other previously unpublished photos of the dress.
A must book for Diana fans!

5 out of 5 stars Dress For Diana.......2007-07-28

The Book is very very good. I really like knowing how the Emanuel's came up with the idea for Diana's dress.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful memories.......2007-07-12

A great book to own and a great keepsake for all times. I remember the wedding well and all the glory and pagentry surrounding that beautiful July day. Never again will a dress be made and worn with so much style and all the unselfish love and care that went into making this beautiful masterpiece for all the world to see. But not for Diana herself could this particular gown or memorable event have gotten off the ground and into the pages of history. Diana picked the best- the Emanuels to make her this beautiful creation and Diana's own beauty to capture the creation and magic of the most recorded wedding day ever. Pat C, New York

5 out of 5 stars A Dress For Diana.......2007-05-07

This book is just beautiful!
I read it in two sittings. It is very well written and just takes you back in time to that awesome spring when Diana was waiting to be married to Charles.
It sounds like it was a true labor of love for the Emanuels to make this dress, but oh my, what a total hassle to have to be so secretive because of the papparazzi intrusions. They all had such patience to see it all through.
I'm very happy the Emanuels decided to celebrate what would have been Diana's 25th wedding anniversary with this beautifully worded book (and lovely pictures, too!)

Book Description

Being a bridesmaid is one of the greatest honors a dear friend can bestow. But actually wearing the dress the bride picks out? That's the true test of friendship. You Can Wear It Again pays loving tribute to fifty years of bridesmaids' dresses, as featured in real-life weddings. The product of both fashion trends and the bride's whims, bridesmaids' dresses may take the form of medieval costume, complete with wimple; slip dresses with real feathered wings to transform maids into true angels; or the ruffled peach taffeta with puff sleeves that so dominated the 1980s. Whatever the look, you can be sure it's been in and out of fashion more than once. Some lessons are never learned. The perfect gift for current and former bridesmaids, You Can Wear It Again isn't just a showcase of bridal fashions, but a testament to the selfless women everywhere who help the bride's dreams come true.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for your dedicated bridemaids..........2007-07-30

I bought these books to give to my friends as a way to ask them to be one of my bridesmaids. It was a hit!!! The pictures get funnier and funnier with each turn of the page. It only serves as inspiration to strive a wedding that won't look ridiculous in 25 years... impossible!

2 out of 5 stars Not for Bridesmaids in their 20's.......2007-06-19

I bought 4 of these books to give to my bridesmaids as part of their gift at the rehearsal dinner. It's a cute book/good concept, but I was expecting more modern pictures. There are some classic giant-sleeved 80's dresses, but for the most part, the pictures all look like they are from the 1960's or 1970's. Don't get me wrong - the dresses are hideous to someone in their 20's, but those were just the styles back then. The fewer modern dresses in the book just aren't that bad - I've seen/worn much worse. I think this book would be funnier to someone in their 50's looking back than to young brides/bridesmaids today.

4 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-06-10

I bought this as a gag gift for my Mom because we always joke about horrible bridesmaid dress choices. She loved it - it was a little small, but good as a side-gift.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-01-12

My daughter is getting married and wanted to do something fun for her bridesmaids. We saw this book and new we had found the perfect thing. The pictures are "a hoot" and the book was the beginning of a fun way to say a huge "thank you" to her friends for being with her at this time. She sent a copy of the book to each one. We think you will enjoy the book. We certainly did!

5 out of 5 stars Three-time bridesmaid laughed myself silly!.......2006-09-07

Before I start, I must include this disclaimer: I'm an unabashed booster of this book, as Ms. Ilasco selected five photos of weddings I shot (the "Kathy and Carla" photo is one), and four photos of weddings I was in. But I am only one of dozens of contributors to this amazing collection!

I thought my mustard dress was bad. I thought the enormous puffy sleeves on the blue dress were ridiculous. I had no idea that wedding party attire could be as appallingly amusing as some of the examples in the book! When I received the finished book, I laughed harder with the flip of each page.

If you've suffered through a polyester or taffeta nightmare, or selected dresses for your friends you realized in retrospect were totally unsuited to their body types, you will enjoy this book.

This is small (about 5"x8") 140 page paperback book. Way too overpriced for the content. I ordered it to get info on fixing a gaping front neckline. The information was not adequate. I got my answer from an experienced seamtress.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2000-12-03
