Book Description
Through hundreds of eye-popping reproductions, All Wrapped Up! celebrates gift wrap that most ephemeral of paper products from the groovy 1960s. The modest palette and conventional patterns of the previous decade eventually yielded to the riotous colors, op art, and psychedelic visions that defined the late '60s, charting a course through the entire spectrum of mid-century graphic design and commercial illustration. Popular imagery of cute animals, adorable children, barbecue iconography for dad, funky florals, and Santas of every stripe grace these pages. A thoughfully wrapped present is a gift in itself, and All Wrapped Up! is the perfect package to celebrate the popular designs of the most visually exuberant decade of all.

A perfect little coffee table art book. Lots of great, colourful scans and not much annoying text...unique and fun!
1960s "Adult Kids re-Collecting Our Childhood" Must Have!.......2006-06-29
I hardly ever write a review here, but I ordered this book for myself for Christmas 2005 and have been looking at it probably weekly since then. As a 43 year old child of 1962 and collector of everything 1950s, 60s, and 70s, this book brought SUCH a smile to my face when I initially flipped through it and has continued to bring joy. For those of us who truly relish images/graphics/design styles from our past -- feed your brain with THIS book and feel your dopamine and serotonin levels spill all over themselves as you take that trip down memory lane into Christmases, birthdays, and baby/bridal showers past! Then, buy a copy for all of your retro type friends!
wow!.......2006-01-04
this book is amazing! i don't know how they found all these incredible patterns! the book is just jam packed with those fun wrapping papers from the 60's. a great gift for any pop-arty design fan!!!
Groovy Gift - Gotta Get this Book!.......2005-05-04
This book will bring back so many memories. If you're 40 something, you'll want a copy for yourself, one for your parents and more for your 40-something friends. It's a scrapbook of the groovy generation and the perfect gift for the person who thinks he has everything! All Wrapped Up is a gorgeous book. My kids loved looking through it. It sparked a lot of conversation about what it was like to live in the 1960's.
You'll not only remember every birthday you had in the 60s but you'll start to remember songs you forgot, commercials you saw on television and the gifts you received. This wonderful book is a treasure.
KEEP THIS OUT ON THE COFFEE TABLE!.......2005-04-10
A most delightful look at 1960s! I have to say, as an artist, I ripped-off a couple of the cool ideas I found on the pages of this book! The Christmas section if wonderful and the animal section is ultra hip with a lot of retro creatures to conjur up a few smiles. Lots of beautiful patterns in the flower power section and the masculine section is a laugh out loud! The author gives a nice overview of the industry and there is a concise little history of 60s design in the front. I never write reviews but I really did love this book!

What is a sourcebook? A display of old things! And a good 1.......2000-06-05
Taschen writes this is a sourcebook. It just shows where design comes from. What was done in that era. And this book does just that and does it good. No high-brow comment, just reproductions of pages of house-plans, chairs, sidetables, glass ceramics etc. So, if you want to know if your old chair has any historic relevance, look in this book and see if there is a design original, or you might own it! Emphasis on the US, England Scandivavia, Italy and the Netherlands.
Disappointing.......2000-05-31
Once you get past the lovely cover, the interior of this book consists entirely of magazine pages from the 1950's reproduced wholesale. While that means authenticity, it also means small, uninspiring black and white photography. Like looking at an old magazine, not the beautiful graphics one usually expects from Taschen.
MORE MODERN THAN YOU!.......2000-05-17
An absolute must have for anyone with a love for the modernist design movement of the 50's and 60's, or if you're looking to stay consistent with a modernist theme while redecorating. It's so sleek and plastic and modular. I love it! And in the tradition of Taschen books, the price is well worth it!

Marvelous comprehensive survey.......2000-12-21
The 1960s were definitive in terms of innovation and revolution. No where is this more apparent than in that decade's material culture artifacts. Leslie Jackson's book investigates the important highlights. From the sensual, modern curves of Scandinavian furniture to the re-invention of housewares at London's Habitat, design was not only flourishing, it was incredibly pervasive. Good design was everywhere; design was bold, playful, intelligent and fun. Scholarly, yet casual writing accompanied by plenty of full-color illustrations and a clean, stylish book design make this a must for both your coffee table and 20th century design library. An afterword focusses of the music of the Beatles and how it both reflected and prompted design innovation. While that's a bit of a stretch in my opinion, its still one of the more thought-provoking sections of the book. Beatles aside, this book proves to be incredibly relevant to today's consumers, as we are in the midst of a second revolution at the turn of the 21st century. IMacs, VW Beetles, and designer chairs at Target all mirror what happened 30 years ago.

Book Description
In the years between the world wars, a pioneer group of designers, architects, and artists-including Norman Bel Geddes, Donald Deskey, Paul Frankl, Raymond Loewy, Gilbert Rohde, Eliel Saarinen, Walter Dorwin Teague, and Russel Wright-forged a new design aesthetic that was unmistakably American and undeniably modern.
This book, the companion volume to an exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts and opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, showcases more than 125 of the most influential works by these and other legendary designers. From chairs, dinnerware, and textiles to lamps, cocktail sets, and clocks, these strikingly innovative objects made stylish modern design accessible to a broad audience-and are much sought after by collectors today.
The introductory essay ranges from the role of museums and department stores in promoting modern design to the obsession with streamlining to the origins of planned obsolescence. This extraordinary book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in American design.
170 illustrations, 140 in full color, 9 3/4 x 9 3/4"
J. STEWART JOHNSON, the consultant for design and architecture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Modern Art, has curated exhibitions on Alvar Aalto, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Marcel Breuer, among many others.

Customer Reviews:
America's own design style........2002-05-26
This is a beautifully designed and printed book based on the exhibition `American Modern' at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 172 illustrations (142 are large color photos mostly one to a page) focus on objects rather than the wider visual aspects of streamline design such as architecture, transport, engineering. I like the idea of everyday items being used, here you can study, for instance, Lurelle Guild's 1937 Electrolux vacuum cleaner, Norman Bel Geddes' 1940 Patriot radio, Russel Wright's 1937 American Modern dinnerware or the stunning candleholders Wilbert Orme designed in 1938, there are four shown in four separate arrangements and I would really like to have a set!
Author Stewart Johnson explains, in an essay at the start of the book, how a small group of American designers, several of them emigres from Europe, abandoned the ornamentation of Art Deco in favor of simple clean lines, using new materials and manufacturing techniques. Furniture designer Paul Frankl was one of this group and he became an active promoter of the new style. He tied it all down to six characteristics
1 Simplicity.
2 Plain surfaces.
3 Unbroken lines.
4 Accentuation of structural necessity.
5 Dramatisation of the intrinsic beauty of materials.
6 Elimination of meaningless and distracting motives of the past.
Johnson adds one other point that Frankl would not have mentioned at the time: Streamlining. This was the idea that made the style American.
The back of the book has several pages of designer biographies, a useful glossary (Aluminum to Vitrolite and I now know what Monel Metal is) bibliography and index. Joe Coscia Jr, of the Metropolitan's photo studio, should be congratulated on his wonderful photography of the exhibits, they leap right off the page.
As this book only covers objects you might want to read about other areas of Streamline design, have a look at `The Machine Age in America' by Richard Guy Wilson, Dianne Pilgrim and Dickran Tashjian. I think this can be considered the standard work on the subject. Another book that I like is Martin Greif's `Depression Modern: Thirties Style in America', it has some excellent architectural (especially interior) photos that I have not seen in other books. Want to know more? Scan over my Listmania: 'Streamline' books selection.

Wonderful book!.......2001-07-07
I saw the exhibition at The Met and this book captures the objects perfectly! It also serves as a great reference to the greatest period in American industrial design: 1925 to 1940.
A COFFEE TABLE BOOK--With CONTENT!.......2000-05-16
This is a great book for anyone interested in or appreciative of modern design and aesthetics. The book itself is beautiful, and all the color reproductions inside are sleek, clean, and inspiring. The author has the works divided by interesting categories such as "Streamlined," "Geometries," and "Penthouse," groupings that really help illuminate different design tendencies during this period. A beautiful publication!

"What would the great, innocent artists of the past, Giotto or van Eyk, Proust or Apollinaire, have done if some spiteful demon had set them down in our flawed and tawdry world, warped by so-called Totalitarianism?... And what if they had been transported to a wealthy nation, free, but indifferent--what would they have said?" Coming of age in communist Poland in the 1960s and '70s, and living now in Paris and Houston, Adam Zagajewski writes of his experiences on both sides of this political and economic divide. More deeply, however, his prose memoir probes and explores the questions that art must always face: How do we stay spiritually alive in an oppressive culture? How do we keep burning?
"Reality expanded in the hands of the past's great artists," he writes. "It became enticing and mysterious, plumed like the wings of a hawk." So too with Zagajewski, both in his poetry (see especially Mysticism for Beginners and Canvas) and in many of the entries here. At times a simple paragraph in length, at other times ranging across a few pages, each section is both self-contained and a part of the whole. While apparently random--Another Beauty has no chapters, and no clear chronology--the brief passages each function as one facet on the diamond of the whole.
This poet refuses easy irony. "Our task is far too serious for us to mind the fickle temper of the times," he writes. "We, things, are reality's roots, we are the pillars of being. We've got no use for young literary critics with their irony." Irony can be cheap, whether in Poland in the 1960s or in America in the new millennium. Zagajewski doesn't waste his time, or ours, with it. Instead he tends to reality. He knows he can't answer the big questions, but he also knows that those are the ones that matter. --Doug Thorpe
Book Description
This brilliant memoir is Adam Zagajewski's recollection of 1960s and 1970s communist Poland, where he was a fledgling writer, student of philosophy, and vocal dissident at the university in Krakow, Poland's most beautiful and ancient city.
First time in paperback.
Customer Reviews:
a poet's account.......2006-05-17
The autobiographical thoughts (Zagajewski himself does not like describing this volume as "memoirs") collected in "Another Beauty" are truly delightful. I am not sure if they can make a reader who never experienced life in the Communist system understand it (hardly anything could...), but at least they make a valuable source and can explain a lot of its mechanisms and difficulties of people living in Poland then. Probably this was not the main purpose of this tome (which appeared in Poland at the end of the 1990s) anyway...
The memories of the author's student life in Krakow (which seems similar to the Krakow I know, although I was always there only as a tourist and much later) are mixed with thoughts on music, poetry, people and life, and with short images of the surrounding world, all written in a subtle yet sharp manner, which reminds the reader that Zagajewski is a poet. His metaphors and vision of the world are fresh and original. While reading, I was tempted to write down many sentences as they are universal and wise.
Adam Zagajewski is one of the most important contemporary Polish poets, and although he is erudite, being a philosopher, a writer and a man of great personal culture (a representative of Polish intelligentsia, a class, which hopefully is not extinct yet), he is also very modest and critical towards himself. His prose is full of subtle irony and humor.
"Another Beauty" is a pleasure to read, and, although I have read the original, I am sure that Claire Cavanagh's translation (she is also a translator of many of Zagajewski's poems) does it justice.

In the years after World War II, the theory-laden modern movement blossomed into popular "contemporary" design. Le Corbusier and Levitt, Brussels and L.A. reinforced concrete and Formica--all became part of a trend towards sleek, functional, pared-down design. This excellent book could have been a compendium of '50s architectural and interior memorabilia, and therefore a success with nostalgia buffs (who will also love it), but it is far more than that. Lesley Jackson has written an intelligent, entertaining book on the intersection of life and design in the postwar era. Chapters include "The Birth of the 'Contemporary' Style"; "The House"; "The Interior"; "Decoration and Fittings"; "Furniture and Furnishings"; and "Society Goes 'Contemporary.'" Its scope is broad, beginning with a beguiling, campy advertising photo showing a housewife at cocktail time, poised in her powder-blue cocktail dress, and her husband, who is reaching into a sleek, chrome-and-Formica credenza, perhaps the home of their record player. The book ends with Brasília, the capital city built between 1956 and 1960 that brought Brazil to the verge of economic collapse. In between are colorful looks at the houses and furniture of Ray and Charles Eames; the early European proponents of modernism; Frank Lloyd Wright's seminal Fallingwater; the various uses of concrete, stone, brick, and other materials for texture and color; the melding of interior and exterior space; the fun colors of prototypical Marimekko fabrics; the early idealism of designing for "the masses"; and the now almost quaint social optimism from which the pervasive culture of materialism emerged. --Peggy Moorman

Great 50's and 60's.......2007-07-17
I feel this book should be titled more as to the content. The design work in the book is primarily l950's and l960's.
This was not what I expected when I purchased a "Contemporary" book. I felt it should reflect at the most the early 2000's to date. I feel it is worth while for my purpose now which will be a donation to the local library.
Amazing layout!.......2005-10-21
Woah! This is one of the coolest books ever! I very seldom have given 5 stars to anything, but this one deserves it! Jackson really went out of her way in obtaining these pictures-the real deal, too. If you've ever seen a retro Armstrong flooring ad, a home modernizing magazine from the 50s-60s, Matt Maranian's book "Pad", or anything on retro ranch homes and furniture, this one takes the cake! It's also gives a pseudo-history of midcentury architecture, through pictures-and it's amazing how many pictures are here. I haven't purchased the books "Modernism Revisited", "Inspiring Interiors from Armstrong", or "The Eames Primer", although I plan to get these, but if you or someone you know are into this period, this is definitely a book to obtain. I have a friend that just went ape over it when he saw it. Now he wants to go retro, too. Another book that I've had my eyes on is "Modern Retro Living with Midcentury Modern". Once I get these, I'll leave reviews, as well. Don't hesitate to get this one if you're into this period, also!
Mid-century Must..........2002-10-25
If you like the direct innovative designs of the 50's & 60's this book will provide a great overview with lots of photos.
It would have been nice to see more coverage of the furnishing specifics, especially DUNBAR and Edward Wormley - my personal favorites.
Put on some lounge music, pour a martini and enjoy!
Great grainy pictures!.......2002-01-17
This is a pretty cool book. The photos are honest, as they're from the era instead of reconstructed rooms today. Very in depth also; it covers furniture, architecture, glassware, kitchens, textiles and other home furnishings.
Great general guide to what was 'Contemporary'.......2001-01-12
This book is a great general guide to what was 'contemporary' - including architecture of the home, public building and office. In addition, it delves into interior design - including glass, wall treatments, flooring and furniture. The prospective reader should be made aware right off that this book is written from the British perspective - one will see British English spellings of words, and names of British companies. However, the vast majority of the book deals with American developments, which is more pertinant to the US reader. I call this book a great 'general' introduction because it digs about 75% of the way into each subject. But how many other books can cover so many subjects as well? None that I've been able to find so far. The book is richly illustrated, including some photos which span the entire page. The text is interesting and easy to understand. After reading each chapter of the book, you are left with a good basic undertanding of what you've just read. The pictures themselves are generally period photos, which really help the reader see what 'contemporary' was to the eyes of the folks living at that time. If you are contemplating purchasing a 'contemporary house', or perhaps decorating in the 'contemporary' style, this book will give you some good ideas. Overall, a very enjoyable book - it would make a good present, and look great sitting on your coffee table!

Book Description
The War is over, the economy's booming, and the supermarket shelves are groaning under the weight of thousands of items. New products and packagingaerosol sprays, TV dinners, canned beer, and molded plasticsabound, and the package designer's task has never been more challenging, or more fun. Designers and pop culture buffs alike will revel in this outstanding portfolio of package design from the mid-1940s to mid-1960s, a veritable social history of postwar consumer culture. In more than 150 color photos, author Jerry Jankowski presents favorite pieces of the period -- a surrealist perfume bottle by Salvador Dali, a Bing Crosby ice cream carton, "Astronaut: The New Game of Outer Space" (for boys), "Let's Do Dishes" (for girls) -- chosen for their strong graphics, classic motifs, social commentary, or quirky humor. Readers will recognize familiar classics like the boldly designed package for Brillo soap pads and an early incarnation of the Frisbee. All are cultural time capsules from a rich era of design, reflecting an image of a nation caught somewhere between the Old West and the Space Age.

Good Stuff.......2000-04-20
This book featured some great pictures. As a vintage advertisement collector, I saw some familiar brand names and also a few new brands. This book was very well assimilated. The photographs were very well taken and the text was very well written. Congratulations to the author (Jerry Jankowski) and the photographer (Grant Kessler) for such a great book.

Book Description
To celebrate its centenary, Steuben is planning a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York-together with this companion book-showcasing its most glamorous and sophisticated creations from the '30s through the '60s. The exhibition and book explore a remarkable chapter in the history of both America's premier crystal and the modern movement in art and design in New York City.
Monumental bowls, stemware, and exquisitely sculpted and copper-wheel-engraved pieces from Steuben's elite mid-century lines are featured in this stunning volume. A few of the highlights include Sidney Waugh's famous Gazelle Bowl and George Thompson's Galapagos Bowl, as well as works by such celebrated artists as Salvador Dalí and Isamu Noguchi. Black-and-white photographs of Steuben glass masterworks are combined with vintage photographs and ephemera from Steuben's archive that capture the look and feel of a glittering era in New York City's life and art.

Ecellent book.......2005-10-27
I had borrowed this book from the library prior to buying this copy from Amazon, so I already knew the content of the book was of a high standard.
If you are interested in looking at the work of mural artists and seeing some excellent examples of trompe l'oeil this is the book to get.
Features Trompe L'oeil and Mural Painting...Great Resource!.......2004-07-29
The mural examples contained in this book are, for the most part, ones not contained in other books on the subject. In other words it has fresh material. There is much diversity in subject matter, ranging from classical pieces to modern abstract paintings. I believe what the other reviewer was referring to when they stated it has "sculptures" is the trompe l'oeil architectural elements that are featured throughout the book. I disagree that is is not for those of us interested in mural painting. This is not a how-to book, but a pictoral journey in mural painting. It is a nice addition to any art related personal or professional library.
Great For Decorating, But Not For Painting.......1999-04-11
There was not much to do with the painting of murals included in this book at all. The title is rather misleading. If, however, you are interested in beautiful illusions in sculpture and decorating, this would be the perfect place.
