Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars And these guys are the experts? .......2007-06-02

Simply put, page after page have inaccuracies and incomplete information. If a novice like myself can find the errors it makes you wonder who in the heck the "experts" are. Do they proof read this before it goes to print? I am talking EASY things that most guitar players know.

It is just disappointing that a book that has an impact on market pricing is so inaccurate.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-05-07

This price guide is a good reference book for anyone interested in buying, selling, collecting or edjucating themselves on used and vintage guitars, basses, and amplifiers.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and complete guide ........2007-04-03

Excellent guide !! . It's the most complete guide I'd ever seen..
A good source for collectrors and not collectors too. Good Descriptions and details.. And very very complete..
You will find every intstrument you are looking for.

4 out of 5 stars One of many useful tools.......2007-03-11

One can rarely perform any complex and important task, be it manual or cerebral, with a single tool. Research on any subject is a prime example; a single reference source is never adequate. This guide, while not as complete or exhaustive as some might like, is simply one of many reference tools, and an extremely useful one. Were the guitar market static, it might make sense to put together a voluminous compilation aspiring to be all-inclusive and unerringly accurate. But the guitar market is anything but static and this guide simply provides the best "snapshot" that it can at this particular time.

I must disagree with those other reviewers who say the prices in this guide are so vastly off the mark, and that ebay represents the new paradigm in pricing information. My own experience during the last few years has been repeated instances of wishful sellers justifying their asking prices by pointing to the "Buy It Now" prices of the burgeoning numbers of "Power Sellers" and "ebay Store" entities. Those prices obviously have no significance in defining the current market, because the vast majority of the listings expire without generating a single bid. Even more interesting are the numerous cases in which sellers have said that their guitars sold, at or above the asking prices, and then a month or two later the same sellers have the same guitars listed again. Were it to happen often enough, such fraudulent generation of apparent sales could help drive the market upward, just as those sellers are obviously hoping.

While ebay sales represent valuable pricing data, the authors of this guide have certainly tried to exclude sales to apparently collusive buyers, and probably weighted their analysis in favor of those sales that generated numerous bids.

5 out of 5 stars A must for music collectors and guitar players alike........2007-03-06

This music collector's reference represents the only volume covering all the collectible guitars of the industry, and sets industry standards when it comes to determining market values of collectible guitars. Both musicians and collectors will want to keep this guide at hand: it blends quick-find page headings and an index and dealer directory for the entire country with an examination of what makes a guitar collectible. Add black and white photos and paragraphs of maker and model history and you have a price guide which can't be beat: a must for music collectors and guitar players alike.

Book Description

Still the best, broadest, and most complete introduction to the colorful, lustrously glazed, exuberantly decorated 19th-century ceramic art called majolica, this classic book, first published in 1989, is now fully updated. A brand-new chapter includes the latest information and 27 added color photographs of recently discovered pieces; 18 fresh color illustrations replace older black and whites; and an updated bibliography and list of museums with majolica collections make this book invaluable for the ever-growing number of majolica enthusiasts. The result, as Cape Cod Antiques & Arts said of the original edition, is "a serious reference for serious connoisseurs . . . It's wonderful."

Book Description

The new Second Edition of "The Artist-Signed Postcard Price Guide" is the 11th book on postcards by author J.L. Mashburn. It was written specifically for collectors and dealers interested in both U.S. and Foreign artist-signed cards issued from 1898 to 1950. It has 480 pages, lists over 2,300 artists and their works with related values, and contains 730 great photos. This new book can be a valuable asset for all postcard enthusiasts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from the expert..........2000-07-07

Mashburn writes terrific books. His Postcard Guide is the best general book out there. He also does specialized postcard books such as this one. Anyone who collects artist-signed postcards will want this book, no question about it.

It is filled with hundreds of pages and pictures of all our favorite artists, like Harrison Fisher, Philip Boileau, Earl Christy, as well as the more obscure yet fabulous artists like Lupiac and others. He covers a variety of categories, like Beautiful Ladies, Beautiful Children, Nudes, Blacks, Sports, and Comics. He includes a reference section in the front which goes over important information such as how to determine the age of a card, grade a card's condition, and so on. My only quibble with this book is that all the inside images are in black and white, and I would have loved to see some in color. Perhaps in the next edition.

If you're looking for a comprehensive reference on Artist-Signed postcards, this is the book to buy.

Very good if your looking for very old marks

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for older markings.......2000-06-14

This book has a terrific layout. The right page has 50 or more markings while the left page lists easily referenced details. Unfortunately, the details can be sketchy. For example, (one listing) Paris, some factory, Charles Phillipe or (another listing) Sceaux? or Bourg la Reine? Doubtful.

I bought this book to accompany me on my European flea market travels. It is a reprint of a book originally published in 1937. So all of the markings are for things that are much older than I'm likely to find in our local flea markets. However, should I come across one, I'll be ready for it. :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference Resource for the Serious Collector.......2000-06-21

Gregory Schaaf's latest book has turned out to be one of the most valuable and most used in my collection of books on this subject. Not only does he provide a concise and well structured biography on every important potter of the Rio Grande Pueblos, he also provides family trees, some great color plates and a number of black and white photographs of both the artists and their work. Bur Mr. Schaaf goes further than that, and supplies his reader with all-important pricing info, including the prices some of the potters fetched for their work at recent auctions. I use this book for researching; confirming or refuting the extraneous piece of information, and for simple reading pleasure. Sometimes I get the book down just to look (again!) at the pictures. A great job, and a wonderful companion to his earlier book of biographies on the Hopi potters. Armed with these two volumes, any collector of pueblo pottery will find himself making fewer mistakes on who to pursue, what to buy and how much to pay for it. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars American & European Postcards of Harrison Fisher.......2001-02-11

This is a delightful book and indispensible if you are a collector of Harrison Fisher postcards. I was disappointed that ten of Book Advertising postcards were NOT illustrated. If they have never been discovered that is fine, but even then the illustration from the original magazine would have helped to picture the art color and compostion of that particular card. The colors were also a concern as in many cases the illustrations appeared more muddy than the cards that I own. It is a pity that a dust cover was not also included as already the printed board cover is getting well thumbed! But these little quibbles apart I am very pleased to now own this book, especially as I know which cards I particularly want to add to my collection.

1 out of 5 stars Vague and Disappointing.......2003-07-13

I bought this book hoping it would give me some guidelines for evaluating art at auctions. The guidelines it gave were so vague and general that I learned nothing new. Most of the information in the book was common sense. The majority of the book was listings of artist's names with wide ranges of values, such as Thomas Kincaide $400-$5000. Nothing was mentioned about lithographs, seriagraphs or other types of works. This book hasn't been helpful to me at all.

    3 out of 5 stars Hopi-Tewa Pottery.......2007-09-09

Granted this is a huge undertaking. And it is at present the best book on the subject. But it, like the rest of the "American Indian Art Series," is not particularly well edited. And without seriously acquainting yourself with its form and arrangement - it is difficult and often frustrating to use efficiently. But it is all we have... and it is not a bad value.

4 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Volume.......2005-01-07

With this first volume, the team of Dr Greg and Angie Schaaf began their welcome and comprehensive American Indian Art Series. The reader can only begin to imagine the amount of work involved in such an undertaking. The Schaafs should be commended for their efforts. From A-Z the biographies of nearly 500 Hopi potters are included. From Nampeyo to the masters of today (Rondina Huma, Steve Lucas, Rainy Naha, Mark Tahbo, etc, etc) to the elders who sell from the doorsteps of their homes ... all are included. This being an initial volume, there are certain inherent shortcomings. All photographs are reproduced in black and white. Artists photographs, in many cases, were far from current. The first edition, published in 1998, has a photo of Rondina Huma which is over 20 years old. Similar 'vintage' photos are included. Examples are not consistent. Some potters have numerous examples included while certain award-winning potters have 2-3 at most. Again, one can only begin to imagine the amount of time and effort to meet publication deadlines. A second printing (Nov, 2004) is now available and it is my understanding that some updating has been done. It is good to know that the price is now within reach of all readers. A secondary market price of over $200, for the first edition, was totally out of reason! If you are a collector, this publication and others in the series would be valuable additions. Subsequent volumes, in the series, are in color and the biographies appear to be more current.

4 out of 5 stars A Hallmark Book of Hallmarks.......2003-11-21

Here's hoping this robust hardback book is reissued in an affordable soft cover to assist those who really need it . . . researchers and beginners! Its presence since 1998 has had a wide and dramatic impact on Hopi pottery interest levels and is already, itself, a First Edition collectible, jumping from its $60 issue price into the $300-$400 collectible range (at the time of this writing - amazon.com).

The author has gathered what might be only a smattering of the Hopi-Tewa potters who have produced quality Hopi Pottery over the decades. There are doubtless many more equally deserving of similar literary attention. But this book is an especially strong start and lays a sound foundation for future volumes.

Some artist biographies offered in its pages are fairly sketchy; otherwise, the author has done his homework. For example, if you own an Evelyn Tootsie specimen, you might be disappointed to discover her name and nothing more. On the other hand, if you own a similar quality piece made by Garnet Pavatea, you'll be delighted to unearth a page and a half of valuable bio, museum, photo and auction info. Schaaf can assemble tons of information and seems to go to extremes to find bio data on his included artisans. It is curious there is no mention of the Indian traders in the area, even those serving the local Hopi populace (and who are doubtless rich sources of such bio data). Interestingly, the book is heavily laced with photos of specimen from Schaaf's own collection.

The author's promise to revise and expand this book with additional artisans also includes a welcome tool for added information from the adoring public of Hopi potters. This volume includes a handy "artist survey" to encourage the inclusion of more Hopi potters in future editions. Hopefully, more Hopi-Tewa pottery artists, their families and collectors will seize the opportunity contribute and, thereby, expand the known world of Hopi pottery.

Quality features of this First Edition production could use an upgrade in any subsequent reprinting. The book utilizes a flashy dust cover with thick, glossy face; then the book falls back on traditional cost saving features; a measly 4 pages of color photos followed by whopping 180 pages of black and white. The paper stock is thick, coarse and unwieldy. The book does not deliver the workshop feel of a research-type book (or even measure up to a typical auction catalog), although the linen hardback cover is heavy and strong. The binding imparts a fragile feel, making me wonder how much archival quality the book will maintain over the years. Under heavy use I fear the result would be loose and failing page structure. If you buy this edition, don't plan on using it much. My copy already delivers a disturbing crackling noise from the binding, not good.

Overall, I would not say this book is a great instrument to support and motivate collections of Hopi Indian pottery. I don't feature it as a scholarly approach to Hopi pottery; however a biographical volume such as this spawns interest and promotes added value to Hopi pottery in general. Its place in the pantheon of Indian books is sound.

Except for the soaring secondary market on this edition, I'd say every Hopi pottery researcher and collector should have one. Finally, if you don't have a few hundred dollars to squander on the lofty collector price of the First Edition, you might be better off waiting for the author to make good on his promise to expand and republish.

4 out of 5 stars Get this if you are into buying Hopi pottery.......2000-06-15

If you are ready to make an investment in Native American pottery from the Hopi, this book is a "must have". Every gallery I've been at pulls this book out when I ask them something about who made a particular piece of pottery. The author provides information on every known Hopi potter. It includes complete family histories, who they learned from, and how much some of their art has sold for. Also included is an appendix on common signatures and hallmarks. If you're a new-comer to Native American pottery, this is not a good starting point -- try "Southwest Pottery: Anaszai to Zuni" by Hayes & Blom. Also, if you are looking for thousands of pretty color pictures, this is not the best book (even though there are some nice photos). But if you're going to spend money on pottery, check it out.
