The Complete Visual Dictionary of Star Wars.......2007-09-26
This book is extraordinary. The pictures are sharp and extremely detailed. There are explanations of many characters that are only seen in the background scenes. I highly recommend if you're a Star Wars fan. My 4 year old won't give it up.
My Star Wars fanatic loves this book.......2007-09-26
I bought this for my 6 year old who is a Star Wars FREAK. He sat down with this book immediately and has not really stopped looking at it since. He can barely read, but he loves examining all of the characters, and the way they are broken down and labeled is very exciting to him. He likes to see everything that he's seen in the movies, and video game, in full detail.
I can't comment on how this book is similar or different to any other book, but I can say, it's very detailed, it covers a lot of information and describes alot of the relationships and uses of the characters & items. My 6 year old can identify way more than I can. This book is well set up, with loads of information and LOTS AND LOTS of details full color high quality photos which is just what we were looking for.
Good luck!
A Must-Have for any Star Wars fan.......2007-09-21
My son constantly wants to look at this book, and he is only 6 and has never seen any of the movies. That pretty much says how good this book is. I grew up with the original Star Wars movies, so looking through this book is like looking into the past for me. It is well put-together, very concise with a lot of nice photos and a plethora of Star Wars information. An excellent resource for any Star Wars aficionado.
Star Wars is a Five star choice for the ultimate fan.......2007-09-09
This book is just fantastic, and it is worth every penny. I originally bought it for my friends son who loves Star Wars. The kid walked around with the book under his arm like a bible! He never put it down. I recently bought it for my own two elementary age boys and they love it just as much. This is wonderful gift to get for any Star Wars fan -- Once again DK has cornered the market on wonderful visual books for young children. Their books are so well executed and so wonderfully edited, they know exactly how to appeal to this age group by giving just enough information with out making it too simple. An adult fan would actually love this book too. It's a great purchase.
My 9-year-old loves this book!.......2007-09-03
I purchased this book for my 9-year-old son who has been a Star Wars fan for a few years. He has spent hours looking through the book on his own or alongside his friends. I have never seen the movies and I have little knowledge of the people in them, but I could easily learn A LOT from this book if I wanted to. The pictures of the people and tools/weapons are great! I also like the fact that they show pictures from movie scenes that depict the people or the tools being discussed on that particular page. This was a great price for a large hardcover book with great details and pictures!
Book Description
From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet.
Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.
Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.

Domosaur PopUp Book.......2007-09-29
This book was absolutely amazing. The detail of each and every dinosaur was just phenomenal. I purchased several for Christmas presents. My 5yo grandson is soo crazy for anything dinosaur. I know it will make a big impression on him if no one else. Recommend child shoukld use this book with some adult supervision due to the intricate popups. The price was good too.
Really cool book.......2007-09-26
My six year old loves this book. She keeps it on a special shelf so it does not get "messed-up". The pop ups are really detailed and this book has alot of information. It is not all about the art work. This is a really cool book for dino lovers.
Fantastic Dinosaur Book.......2007-09-23
This is an incredible book. The pop-ups are beautiful and intricate and the text informative. I can't wait to give it to my son for his 6th birthday. The only draw back I see is if my 1 year old gets his hands on it.
Great book !.......2007-09-23
I ordered this book for my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She loves dinosaurs, and she loves books, so this was a great pick for her.
The pop-ups are breathtaking and the colors are vibrant, but if your child is rough on books this is not a book for them. My daughter knows I have to help her with this book because it seems that you could tear it easily if you didn't use caution. So we look at it together, and don't have any problems. The cover and spine seem well made.I bought it on sale for under 5 bucks so it was well worth the money. I don't know that I would have paid $30 (suggested retail) for it though.
It has some dino facts that are interesting to read but I think the pop- ups are the main attraction.
Our family has really enjoyed this book.
Great Pop-Up Book!!.......2007-09-21
Gosh, fabulous pop-up book! I wish there was a higher rating than 5 as this book certainly deserves more!!
This book has more pop-ups than I have ever see in any book written/illustrated by other authors. The dinosaur pop-ups in this book are very intricate and beautifully done. The text is well done as well giving a information on each dinosaur. Robert Sabuda is definitely a master when it comes to the art of a pop-up book!
I am giving this book to my nephew and I am sure he'll love it. I only wish they had these kinds of pop-up books when I was a kid!
Book Description
On dry land, most organisms are confined to the surface, or at most to altitudes of a hundred meters—the height of the tallest trees. In the oceans, though, living space has both vertical and horizontal dimensions: with an average depth of 3800 meters, the oceans offer 99% of the space on Earth where life can develop. And the deep sea, which has been immersed in total darkness since the dawn of time, occupies 85% of ocean space, forming the planet’s largest habitat. Yet these depths abound with mystery. The deep sea is mostly uncharted—only about 5 percent of the seafloor has been mapped with any reasonable degree of detail—and we know very little about the creatures that call it home. Current estimates about the number of species yet to be found vary between ten and thirty million. The deep sea no longer has anything to prove; it is without doubt Earth’s largest reservoir of life.
Combining the latest scientific discoveries with astonishing color imagery, The Deep takes readers on a voyage into the darkest realms of the ocean. Revealing nature’s oddest and most mesmerizing creatures in crystalline detail, The Deep features more than two hundred color photographs of terrifying sea monsters, living fossils, and ethereal bioluminescent creatures, some photographed here for the very first time. Accompanying these breathtaking photographs are contributions from some of the world’s most respected researchers that examine the biology of deep-sea organisms, the ecology of deep-sea habitats, and the history of deep-sea exploration.
An unforgettable visual and scientific tour of the teeming abyss, The Deep celebrates the incredible diversity of life on Earth and will captivate anyone intrigued by the unseen—and unimaginable—creatures of the deep sea.

Magnificent Book.......2007-10-03
An incredible journey to the under sea world of mysterious aquatic life.
Fascinating photos of extraordinary creatures and their habitat. We purchased the book as a gift for our son, a recent art school graduate who specializes in creating concept art. He absolutely loved the book, and will be a valuable tool and reference work for his library.
buy it!.......2007-09-30
This is one of the best coffee table books I have! The pictures are amazing and numerous guests have used it as a conversation starter in our living room. For anyone who loved marine biology as a kid (and who DIDNT?!) this book is stellar.
FASCINATING!.......2007-09-23
This is the most amazing book that I have seen in a long time! Extraordinarily beautiful fotos of equally stunning and fascinating creatures! The beauty and creativity of nature takes your breath away! A must to have!
AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-23
Beautiful, depending upon what your definition of "beauty" is.
The animals in this book could very well be the inhabitants of YOUR nightmare, but not mine.
The incredible creatures, which we are privileged to view are breathtaking.
And yet another example of the world we have not seen...and are probably destroying.
The most beautiful book in the world.......2007-09-10
This is the most beautiful book I've ever see. It is loaded with photos of sealife never seen before , varied and facinating. Every picture is one you'd want to touch , or frame , or say to a friend , hey , look at this. There's a world going on we know nothing about , and it's a complex as our world.
Book Description
Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magicians' secrets are unveiled. We get a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, their pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A dry and boring subject? Just wait! You'll be hooked in five minutes. Reads like a detective story which it really is. But it's all true. This book is about the most blatant scam of all history. It's all here: the cause of wars, boom-bust cycles, inflation, depression, prosperity. Creature from Jekyll Island will change the way you view the world, politics, and money. Your world view will definitely change. You'll never trust a politician again or a banker.

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-10-02
This book is not main stream. Its critics would probably call it the radical theories of a "gold bug". A more "establishment" answer to the criticisms brought up in this book can be found in Galbraith's - Money, From Whence It Came and Where It Went.
This book is structured very well. It is easy to read and very persuasive but if you are like me, after you finish this book you will have more questions than you have answers.
The book makes some good points on the other hand it promotes many fantasies.
Mr. Griffin could be right on many things but his answers for the most part would not make things better - but worse in my opinion.
The solution to the MONEY problem are more complicated than the answers that are supplied here. This book is a good book to buy and to read but one must read it very critically - very critically.
Fearfully Factual - Wholly Horrific.......2007-04-22
If you, like me, believe that the truth doesn't always makes sense, but the WHOLE TRUTH usually does, then you will appreciate and value this well researched, carefully written work by G.E. Griffin. Even so, this is just the tip of a much bigger iceberg, but for anyone who wants to know why the working class has to work so hard, just to go backwards, you will find out a very definitive answer in this book. This book is a must have for any TRUTH SEEKER fighting for facts in an age of profiteering deceipt. If you are new to economics, please read "Whatever Happened To Penny Candy" by Richard J. Maybury and Jane A. Williams first and you will know more than than most politicians. Griffins other book, "A World Without Cancer" is equally as researched, informative, and important.
Even a beginner can understand.......2007-04-04
When I first read this book - I had only just begun looking at the banking system and how it worked. My knowledge extended a bit past CNBC - but not much. I found it understandable and enjoyable. Since my original read (about 3 years ago) I have read it again and bought a second copy to loan out - I don't want to lose my original. I'm not sure Joe Average could simply pick it up and be enthralled, but if you have an interest in the banking system - this is a great book - even if you have little background in the subject.
The Matrix .......2007-03-17
AFTER READING THIS BOOK YOU WILL HEAR DISCUSSIONS ON TALK SHOWS, ARTICLES IN THE PAPERS AND YOU'LL LISTEN TO THE RHETORIC BANTERED BACK AND FORTH AMONG PEOPLES TRYING TO GRASP "WHY THINGS ARE HAPPENING THE WAY THEY ARE". WHY DO BANKS GET INVOLVED IN APPROVING HOME LOANS ON OVER VALUED PROPERTY...KNOWING FORECLOSURES WILL SOON SKYROCKET? WHY DOES THE US SELL WEAPON TECHONOLOGY TO COUNTRIES THAT, WE CITIZENS ARE TOLD, ARE PROBLEM COUNTRIES? WHY HAS THE CIA TRAINED FOREIGN BORN INDIVIDUALS, SUCH AS, BIN LADEN AND OTHERS KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT? THE MEDIA REPORTS EVENTS AND WE ASSUME THAT IT IS TRUE...THAT IT REPRESENTS REALITY. BUT, THIS BOOK WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. THEN YOU WILL REALIZE HOW FOOLISH WE ARE TO LIVE IN THIS "WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE" THAT THE MEDIA HAS CREATED FOR US.
Should be required reading.......2007-03-06
You can read the other reviews for synopsis and overviews. This is a must read and should be required reading for all Americans. It is a well researched and footnoted exposition on the Federal Reserve and far more. Griffin goes into fascinating asides regarding the origins of money and banking and the ways that bankers have instigated wars while supporting both sides. This book should be of great interest to those who enjoy either history, finance, foreign affairs, mystery or politics and answers many questions as to why the "world" is as it is today. The first 50 pages are a little slow and then it reads like a detective novel. It could even be argued that it's one's duty to read this book.

Identifying things underwater in the Caribbean........2007-08-26
I am a Brit who has been travelling to the Caribbean to dive with a Rotary group on an annual basis for the past 5 years during which we have dived in the North, East, West and Southern areas. One of my diving colleagues brought along the Reef Set and having looked at it, I was so impressed that I decided to buy a Set for myself - a great reference work for someone who is keen to put names to the things they see underwater.
Wonderful.......2007-08-15
I was working as a scuba instructor down in Grand Cayman when the first edition came out. I can't tell you what an impact the reef fish identification guide had. I have the whole set and it's wonderful.
The best in print.......2007-08-11
If you dive, this is the guide you must have to identify what you see. Indespensible for any trip.
The Best Guides in the Ocean.......2007-05-21
This set makes identifying fish, creatures, and corals possible for anyone. The authors developed a revolutionary grouping system to help the user focus observations, from which one can then refer to the book to make a positive identification. The photos are fabulous, and in the Reef Fish book, the authors even tell you where they were taken. Information is geared to those who spend time underwater (both the "Reef Fish" and "Reef Creature" books tell readers how organisms react to divers). Although one can use these books by thumbing through the pictures alone, there is much valuable information in the concise writing leading up to the photos, especially the authors' notes and explanations of the identification groups. Descriptions accompanying the photos help one learn subtle differences and sharpen observations further. In all, these three books are "must haves" for those who want to know what they're looking at under the ocean.
Great Set of Books!.......2007-03-22
The handy carrying case and lovely volumes will come in handy for our next Virgin Island adventure...sorry we didn't have them along last time for identification purposes! They are terrific! Thanks.

Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

Animals do indeed communicate information to us.......2007-10-02
This book was recommended to me several years ago, and since reading it I regularly refer to it as an informational resource. On many occasions I have been amazed at how relevant the information about a particular creature was to what I was experiencing at the time it happened to cross my path. I found Animal Speak to be of such value to me that I chose to include an excerpt from it within my own book. As such, I highly recommend it to any person who has interest in the spiritual path.
Animal Speak by Ted Andrews.......2007-09-26
Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small
Great book, I had seen Ted Andrews in person, what an incredible man. I already had so many books at the time, I did not buy it then and have him sign it. But recently it is the time of skunks and well, I have just seen/smell for several weeks. My friend has the book, and she read me the section about skunks, and it was amazing. how much of what it had to say about skunks, from strength, relationships, boundaries, sensuality, were the things I was looking at in my life. So I decided to buy the book after all, and it is a great thing.
Animal Speak Still Going Strong.......2007-08-11
This purchase was a replacement for an fifteen year old copy that I simply wore out. I bought the first copy when I met Ted Andrews in 1987, I teach neo-shamanism and suggest that all of my students have this book and it's accompaniment "Nature Speak." Ted is a naturalist and knows animals and nature first hand. He combines his knowledge with ancient and modern myth and lore to give us a comprehensive guide to how animals interact in our metaphysical world.
Fascinating Information about animal symbolism.......2007-07-31
"The most common belief in many societies is that spiritual guides often use animals or animal imagery to communicate their purpose and roles to humans." -From the book.
I was drawn to this book several years ago when I had a recurring dream about an animal and felt sure that there was an important message in it for me. I have used it several times since to look up the meaning associated with certain animals that came across my path. We may think that these encounters are random or coincidental, but they're not. Often we don't see signs that are right in front of us. Does it take a billboard to get you to take notice? For me, sometimes it does, but I have tried to slow down and pay attention to these subtle natural nudges because a lot of times, they contain a powerful message or just good advice! Just as symbols, seeing/encountering certain animals may, on the surface have no meaning to us, but our subconcious knows what it means.
There is a HUGE amount of information in this book. It is very interesting to read. In addition to finding out the meanings/messages of animals, it also tells you how to find out what your nature totems are and how to work with that energy.
In chapter 4 'Reading signs and omens in nature' there are charts for the meanings or symbolism of certain trees and flowers and the positive/negative qualities of colors.
Highly interesting book and great to have for reference.
All creatures, great and small . . ........2007-06-29
This was one of my earlier "special" books. My girlfriend, a Reiki Master, looked up spider for me. I think I had a dream about spider. One of those "insightfull" dreams. You know, the dreams that you just know are more than an ordinary dream. The info she gave me from the book really made me appreciate the spider and what it was trying to tell me. I got hooked, on both Ted Andrews' books and understanding about animals. I always liked animals, but I was a little picky on WHICH animals, and creatures, I liked.
Ted Andrews writes really great metaphysical books. He clearly knows what he's talking about and does his darnest to explain it all to you, with all the details, and in an easy to understand fashion. Besides the fact that it's easy to look up an animal in the book, he explains lots of other related stuff.
I use this book whenever an animal or creature seems out of the norm. Examples would be seeing a single crow over and over again, seeing an animal in some really unusual circumstances, dreaming about an animal, especially if the dream is different. You know a "different" dream when you have one. Maybe you are half asleep/half awake and see a wolf looking directly at you and his eyes are glowing and you sense he is telling you something.

Beautiful edition.......2007-07-16
I bought this edition as a gift for a graduating vet student (every vet needs a copy in his or her office). The book is a classic, and the hardcover is suitable for gifting.
Good reading.......2007-05-07
I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].
Heart Warming.......2007-04-21
As a child, I grew up in a family that devoured the stories of James Herriot. You will laugh, cry, smile at the stories that are shared with the readers. At times I feel like I am right there by his side as he operates on an animal.
At the present, I am re-reading the whole series. PBS movies are good-but not as good as the books.
This books deals with the beginnings of his vet practice, and I get a kick out of James being an "uncle" to a dog and a pig.
An Amazingly Gifted Storyteller.......2007-04-16
Read the first page. That's all you need to decide you want this book. The author is a veterinarian in Yorkshire, and perhaps my American readers are aware of a PBS series by the same name. He's just an amazingly gifted storyteller. This guy is a veterinarian, but his writing puts most "professional authors" to shame.
The best book in the universe bar none except no substitutes Numero Uno etc...........2007-02-16
Yes, this is my all-time favorite book, and it begins my all-time favorite series. Can you summarize the almost limitless appeal of Herriot? I will try. First of all, this book takes place in England, and I am a committed Angliophile. It is warm and compassionate without being soppy. It is a timeless memoir that cuts a slice out of the pie of time and keeps it forever. Prior to Herriot, I exclusively read fiction. Not just any fiction, but Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction, both of which are as different from this book as jam is from vegemite (eeuurggh!). Reading Herriot made me realize that the old saying "Truth is stranger than fiction" left out something. Truth is BETTER than fiction. Enjoy wiht my compliments.

"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"
Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This good-natured nighttime book is sure to be a winner (even though it might inspire a few noisy dinosaur antics), especially as it's written by Jane Yolen, prolific Caldecott Medalist author of Owl Moon. Yolen and Mark Teague have teamed up to create a fun, silly, playful read-aloud. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
What if a dinosaur catches the flu?Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?Does he fling his medicine out of the door? Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best. As in their first dinosaur book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and hilarious pictures.

Love this book.......2007-09-07
I love everything about this book. My 10 month old will sit through this book and just look at all the beautiful colors and laugh at the silly things the dinosaur does.
Charming story, Captivating illustrations, Good message.......2007-08-15
Open the book to discover an enormous Tyrannosaurus Rex on a ridiculously small bed with his human father telling him it's time for bed. Each whimsical illustration tells the story of dinosaurs preparing for bed and asks if they pout, stomp their feet or cry at bedtime. In the end we learn that dinosaurs don't put up a stink, but instead give big hugs and kisses before going to bed. The illustrations are fun and the story is sweet with a great message subtly telling children the right way to go to bed. (It's perfect for any parent who has ever tried to put a stubborn child to sleep!)
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-07-21
My daughter loves this book. Mark Teague illustrates this book fantastically. The dinosaurs have so much emotion in their faces you can read your own childs face in each dinosaur. We have read this so much my little 3 year old memorized it. This is an absolutely amazing book and would be great to add to any collection.
the perfect goodnight book!.......2007-06-02
I have 3 year old twins and they love this book so much that they know all the words by heart, and it is fun to act out what is said on each page, we read several stories before bed, and this is their favorite one.
Love this book!.......2007-05-03
My girls and I love this book! It is the perfect rhyming book with ample opportunities to add life to it while you read. My girls love to stomp their feet on the floor, and we all stop when we get to "does a dinosaur" and real loud all three of us ROAR and they get such a kick out of that. They also like to show me the Mama and the Daddy at different points. We also have the clean up book and that is equally as good. And the illustrations are fantastic. A HUGE fan of this author/illustrator and I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters.......2007-08-25
This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!
Excellent pop up book, reading is complicated.......2007-08-16
Cool book. Reading is over the age category of my daughters, but they simply enjoy the pop ups.
Absolutely amazing!!!.......2007-08-13
This book is unbelievable! The attention to detail is fantastic. Absolute value for money and a must for any child who is as taken with sharks dinosaurs as my son is.

Robert Sabuda always does a fantastic job and this is just another example of an exciting, educational pop-up book.
Book Description
James Herriot's Treasury for Children collects all of the beloved veterinarian's delightful tales for young readers. From the springtime frolic of Oscar, Cat-About-Town to the yuletide warmth of The Christmas Day Kitten, these stories-radiantly illustrated by Peter Barrett and Ruth Brown-are perennial favorites, and this new complete edition will make a wonderful gift for all readers, great and small.
Customer Reviews:
We LOVE this book!.......2007-09-08
My 7 yr old son and my 5 yr old daugher both LOVE this book. And so does mom! It has beautiful illustrations and the stories are warm and wonderful.
Excellent bridge to the pleasures of independent reading.......2007-04-24
I constantly search for beautiful books to develop my children's minds, souls, and taste for literature and thinking. There is a struggle for every parent to find books during the period occurring AFTER the child has learned the mechanics of reading and BEFORE the child can read more than the chapter book pablum churned out by most educational houses and curriculum providers. It seems now the "hook" given to young children is magic and witchcraft lore spawned by the Harry Potter books - but that is another topic entirely.
I have a deep appreciation for beautiful, well-chosen words. Very few books are rightly called "literature," but this book is one of them. Each story is written beautifully and powerfully, obviously from the pen of a great master. The author brings out the details of appearance, background and psyche and the stories resonate with beauty and truth.
I like best that the power of the story comes from the beauty and wonder of the simple and ordinary. So much of our modern literature relies upon shock and caters to the overstimulated, easily-bored personality which needs ever-increasing levels of shock and stimulation to be amused. This book nourishes reflection and the meditation upon the things which are true, honest, just, pure and lovely,
Another delightful thing about this book is the rendering of the artwork. The book is heavily illustrated on each page, and the words are IN the paintings. The visual and verbal components are wedded together in a way that the words are friendly and integral to the story - an absolute necessity for the child to cross the bridge from mechanical reading to reading adventures. The illustrations are masterfully done and very much in keeping with the beauty and power of the language.
The book has sophisticated vocabulary presented in an unobtrusive way. The child learns these words without knowing he has done so.
My seven-year-old son has just finished reading this book, and the joy we both have in listening to him read and explain to me his thoughts and feelings about the stories is priceless (as is his pronunciation of some of the larger words).
Life lessons in empathy and compassion........2007-04-24
This is an absolutely delightful collection of stories, generously illustrated and put together with a child's point of view in mind. It belongs in every library, in every home with children, and on every child's reading list. There is so much information about treating animals (farm animals, family pets, and special companion animals) that is interesting to children and adults. As a bonus, the stories evoke emotions that help little ones develop compassion for all living creatures. It's a wonderful book.
Sweet farm-based tales.......2007-03-29
My six-year-old son loves the stories in this book, just as I loved James Herriot's series starting with All Things Bright and Beautiful. The vocabulary is a bit sophisticated, even for my well-spoken boy, but it's not too distracting.
Love books by this author!.......2007-01-16
My whole family loved this book. My 5 year old especially enjoyed when I read it to her. We have read it several times and she still asks to hear the stories again.
