Cram 101, Not worth the price !!!.......2007-08-28
This Cram 101 book is really not worth the price. You are much better off getting the study guide. All this book has is a bunch of words (terminology) used in the text and the meanings with blank pages for you to add notes. I ordered the textbook, this Cram 101 book and the study guide hoping to gain as much knowledge as possible for this Corporation Finance Course that I am taking as a requirement for my degree program. I was disappointed in this Cram101 Textbook outline book. I think the Study Guide is by far the better value of the two books. Don't waste your money on this thinking that it will help you study or cram for exams etc. It will not! Take it from me, as I wasted 20 bucks on this book.

This was my first textbook in corporate finance at the undergraduate university level (I have the 2nd edition). I found it fairly easy to understand but rigorous enough to motivate me to want to learn more. I now manage instituional portfolios of over $3 billion in bonds and derivatives, and I still refer to it today, nearly 20 years later.

The book is far too easy for professionals and for university students. The blanks exercises are really stupid. If you are not experienced in mathematics or statistics you will probably like the book because there are no derivations of formules or demonstrations of theorems.

Felt by many to be the Gold standard in orthopedic fracture care. The text is comprehensive, providing in-depth literature reviews and the authors prefered method of treatment. The text formatting style makes it difficult to quickly/easily obtain the "need to know" information regarding a particular topic. Overall, well worth it.

Very good, but not great.......2006-04-20
For starters, this isn't a general interest book. Only people who have personal interest in protocol, vestments, precedence, ceremony, etc. If you're looking for something lighter, this isn't the way to go, especially with almost no copies around being sold for less than $100.
If you're like me and you're into these things, this book is a pretty good investment. It's also a must-have reference books if you're, say, an organizer for a party that will have Catholic clerics as guests. The book even gives proper seating plans and the proper order for processions.
It offers more than what you can find by simply looking on the internet. Like, the most authoritative source on the net is probably the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, but the problem with the Catholic Encyclopedia is that their articles are ridiculously ancient, having been written before 1920. Remember that after Vatican II, a lot of the rules, procedures and vestments changed, so a lot of what the Catholic Encyclopedia has is just irrelevant today. The Church Visible has more current info.
It has a few flaws. Even with the ridiculously-high market price that's out for this book these days, it's still rather lacking. The author tells us about the vestments and clothes, including their histories. However, he fails to tell us why the vestments are the way they are, what symbolism was put into why they look that way. If the vestments had no reason for being the way they are, then they're useless. There is great symbolism in them and we must not forget that.
It would have been nice if the author could have included info about the Eastern Catholic vestments, rites, protocol, precedence, etc.
A couple extra bonuses in the book, in the back they have the names and addresses of various Roman tailors where you can buy the goods, and the beginning section of the book has some stuff to do with Conclaves. In the case of the latter, however, the info on Conclaves isn't as in-depth as you'd probably like. For books that give a deeper study into Conclaves and current events with the Church, look for books by John Allen, which are far more in-depth than The Church Visible.
This book came out ten years ago. I think it's a good idea for them to make a new edition of it, not only to keep everything updated, but also so that the high prices for the book can be lowered.
Roman Tradition, Lite.......2001-07-19
This book is a disappointment to the serious scholar of the ceremonial traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. While the sections on current etiquette and papal knighthoods are rather handy (at least if you're planning to have dinner with an Archbishop anytime soon), the large section on clerical dress is inaccurate beyond belief, particularly when it is realized that the author had been a seminarian who studied in Rome. Besides a lack of knowledge of pre-Vatican II usages, there is a certain tone of disdain or impatience taken toward them that this reviewer, an experienced Master of Ceremonies at two churches that offer the traditional Latin Mass with full approval from Rome, does not consider to be a very "catholic" attitude in any sense. Much more useful, fully accurate information on Catholic clerical dress, insignia, and ceremonial will be found in the classic and easily-found (though out-of-print) manuals of Nainfa and McCloud, and the rare (but well worth it) "Ius Pontificalium" of Mgr Nabuco. To sum up, this item will be an expensive, pretentious, mostly misinformative waste of money for the average reader who wants to know more about the externals of Catholic worship and protocol.
Window into the world of the Princes of the Catholic Church........2000-07-15
Fascinating work detailing the sometimes bewildering and archaic sights, sounds and ceremonies of the upper echelons of the Roman Church. A "must-read" for Vatican watchers and liturgists. This book describes the proper forms and protocols of upper-Church functions and rites and relates the history and proper usage of the emblems and insignia. This book is decidedly traditional... if you're looking for expressions of post Vatican II liturgical experimentalism, you will not find it here.

"The Church Visible" is not about Catholic theology or doctrine, but it does concern an area of no less fascination and interest: the ceremonial life, protocol, and ritual of the Roman Catholic Church. Although late 20th century Catholics might tend to think of the Church as a purely spiritual entity, for nearly 1500 years it was also a political powerhouse and the source of almost all of the culture and customs of Western Europe. "The Church Visible" examines the present-day incarnation of the Church in her external life: ceremonies, traditions, vestments, insignia, protocol, and temporal and spiritual governance.
The book is divided into five sections: the Vatican itself, papal honors including orders of knighthood, Church protocol, vestments and insignia, and a brief history of the papacy. A glossary, a name and subject index, and a variety of appendices including several Church documents are included. Several impressive Catholic figures also have brief forewords including John Cardinal Krol, John Cardinal O'Connor, and Archbishop John P. Foley.
Noonan has done a wonderful job of answering those niggling questions that never seem to be answered in the standard Catholic Q and A books, such as the reason why cardinals have their title placed in the middle of their name and how exactly a papal election is performed. For the latter, the author leads the reader step by step through the protocol that follows the death of a pope, citing examples from recent history, and then to the election process and then enthronement of a new pope. He even includes sample liturgies and ceremony programs that have been used in the past. The chapter on the College of Cardinals is especially a gem.
Moving on, he examines the different papal honors, who may receive them, how they should be worn, and their relative precedence to other honors. He then studies the two major equestrian orders, the Knights of Malta and the nights of the Holy Sepulcher. For any readers entranced by the idea of knighthood and chivalry from the time they were children, as this reviewer was, these chapters are a joy to read as they reveal that true knighthood, that which begins with Christ, still exists in the world today, and that chivalry does have a place in the 20th century.
The section on protocol is very interesting and especially helpful for Americans who are not used to matters of rank, protocol, and etiquette. Here Noonan even provides sample dinner menus and invitations from past functions. The chapter on forms of address is also a practical guide for anyone who may have an opportunity to write to any clergyman. Overall, this section will be mainly interesting for those who are curious about orders of precedence and etiquette, even if most will never have the chance to be part of formal pomp and circumstance.
The final section that will be of general interest is the coverage of vesture and insignia. Do you know what a zuchetto is? Do you know when it is worn? Now you will know. A nice addition to this section, and the whole book, is a series of color plate pages on heavy stock that illustrate the various vestments, insignia, awards, historical occasions, and other illustrations that bring to life the written descriptions.
Bottom Line: "The Church Visible" is a fun, interesting, and educational experience that any Catholic interested in the temporal life of the Church should pick up and peruse. It is a fascinating introduction to what might otherwise be an intricate web of inscrutable customs, but are now clearly illuminated as the logical product of the Church's long history as the centerpiece of Western civilization.

James A. Michener manages to educate you a little while also creating interesting enough stories around the State of Texas United States of America. He covers the natives, the influence of Mexicans in the area, and more modern issues like the obsessions with oil and gridiron. Pretty interesting book, in general.
Got to be a lot of research in something this long. This is a pretty cool trick to pull enough. I wonder how many library chairs he wore out back then while working on it.
A little hard to get into........2007-07-05
I have a goal to try to read all of Michener's books. Three of the best so far are Centennial, Chesapeake and Hawaii. Have not completed Texas yet.
Texas - It may be more than you think.......2007-06-07
Another great James Michner epic. This is really long for a paperback (1322 pages). His great stories are strung toegther with a device called "The Task Force." This was a fictitous committee of leading Texans currently studying the history and future of Texas for the Govenor. I appreciated the thoroughness of his coverage of the Alamo. Having grown up on Walt Disney's version of the Alamo, I believed that Santa Ana was evil and the Alamo people were really kind, innocent people. Well the facts bare out that Santa Ana was strongly anti-slavery and the Alamo people were strongly in favor of slavery. I guess Santa Ana had enough racisim with Spain. The Alamo fighters on the other hand were people who supported and fought for the institution of slavery. It was ironic that some Texans might say today Mexican, "go home." The Mexican was there 300 years before the American. At least they were not exterminated like the Native Americans. Despite its early intolorence, it has gone on to be a really unique state(which is probably why Micnener chose it for his novel).

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I spent a short time in Houston, Texas before reading the book, so it kind of felt like I was learning more about somewhere I've been. Almost like reading a book about something that takes place in your hometown. It's a kind of a rush reading and recognizing places you've been or grew up. A very informative book and very interesting.
While in Houston, I experience a lot of predujice against Mexicans. Many derogative terms were used to describe Mexican people. When will people ever learn that it is human nature to try and rise above their station in life and to struggle for survival for themselves and their families. To want something better for their children?
The Uniqueness of Texas.......2007-03-10
It is true, that Texans think Texas is different. And so it is. Michener not only does a great job of detailing the histories that shaped the great state of Texas, he also demonstrates how the people drawn to Texas consistently faced amazing challenges, only to overcome them in spectacular ways.
While this is an interesting read for anyone, but is a must-read for the proud Texan.

This book was very helpful for board review and preparation. I believe it does live up to its name as a baby book of "Aunt Minnie's". The diagnoses are classic and discussions succinct. The bibliography is also excellent.
One could use this book as a primary learning tool while learning pediatric radiology,but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but a radiologist or a radiology resident. It wouldn't be very helpful for a pediatrician, because the way it is set-up is radiology "boards" style.

This bible is like a jack hammer made into a work of art.
Watch when you break out this bible, it is like showing up to a north side high school ball game in an 8 door limo, with go team painted on it.
Folks treat ya like - "E. F. Hutton" - you remember the commercials where everyone gets real quite so as to hear anything he might say.
Warning when you whip out a serious bible like this, people expect you to either be a seeker or a teacher.

The One From Kirkbride.......2007-09-05
I have read that some are buying the NKJV Thompson-Chain Reference Bible and getting a Bible of lower quality this time. I didn't know what it was all about until I bought one for sale at a bookstore one time. After noticing that the pages where glued instead of sewn, I investigated (they can't be messing with my Thompson)! Anyway,here is what I found out. If you want the quality made one you have to get one that comes from the original publisher Kirkbride Publishing company. They sold the right to Nelson Publishers to publish the Thompson Chain as well at a lower price. The one from Nelson Publishers (ask before you order) is the lower quality, but the one from Kirkbride is the higher quality. I pray that this has helped. Pastor Aaron Gravett
Declining Quality---What a Shame!.......2007-08-28
Years ago(not too many years, though) Thompson Bibles from Kirkbride were a quality product. There was Morrocco Leather, Cowhide, Bonded Leather. The smooth and thick Cowhide leather has disappeared, and has been replaced aby some sort of Levant(pebble)grained madness that sells for $84.99, versus the $89.99 of the Cowhide. Definitely not worth it! There are now Bonded Leather editions in some horrible shade of bright purple, and also a forest green---both with black ribbon markers---is Kirkbride so cheap they can no longer afforsd to coordinate the ribbons? Also, most of the ribbon markers are cut very short, so they serve no purpose since there is nothing to hold onto...then there is this miserable Kirvella substance, which comes in Ivory, Grey, and Black. As soon as you hold the open Bible in your hands, the spine caves in. I don't care for red print in the Gospels, but the red-letter is now pink on some pages, or very light red, and hard to read. Bleed through with the inferior-quality paper. Need I go on(there IS more), or have I made my point as to quality?
The helps in the Bible are excellent and unchanged. The Thompson has been around for going-on 100 years, and still sells, so something must be right. You can learn much from the Thompson Bible. It's almost a Bible school between the pages. Unfortunately, the product quality now stinks, but the outrageous prices continue. Your choice.
KJV Bible of Choice.......2007-08-16
I love KJV bibles and own several different kinds of KJV bibles. However, the KJV Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is the one I would take with me if I were to be away from home for a long time. This bible uses scripture to back up scripture, less of man's input and more of the holy word. I love the way the chain references was set up and ton's of bible information at the back. I could take this bible with me anywhere and enjoy every minute of learning subjects and issues based on scripture and the excellent chain references. I always look forward to reading the KJV with this bible. I purchased the large print because it makes it easier to read the sideline scripture references and because I am going on 50. If you're looking for the only KJV bible for your home or if you know someone who loves the KJV bible and needs a replacement, this is the bible I highly recommend and the one I would buy for love ones. May the holy bible transform and renew your mind, that you may prove what is good, acceptable and the will of God.

Our founding fathers created the greatest system of government in history. That government was set up through the United States Constitution.
When the debate over whether to ratify the Constitution was ongoing, a series of pamplets were distributed arguing in favor of ratification and spelling out clearly the case for the Constitution. The Federalist Papers are a compilation of those essays. They are the best defense of our Republic and our Liberty, ever.
Every American needs to read this book. The government has become bloated and gave itself authority well beyond the limits that the Constitution set up. If we are going to take back our Republic, these essays are the philosophical basis for returning government to its Constitutional limits.

This is one of the three or four most important books in English published since 1776. All candidates for federal office should be required to pass a comprehensice essay exam on the Federalist Papers.Applicants for citizenship should be tested on this book.
Very Useful Book, Not A Perfect Edition.......2007-01-09
The Federalist Papers is without a doubt a necessary compilation of rhetoric trying to bring out all the positive aspects of the American Constitution (as well as to discredit some of the criticism it received) for any individual considering himself politically enlightened. Far too many times you will be likely to encounter someone who is completely unfamiliar with notions like executive prerogative and is in utter bewilderment where Bush, for example, gets off with such ideas as the recent wiretaps. The abstract justification for such cases is among the countless other arguments provided by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay within these pages, and though one may disagree with them, they are nonetheless important to know and understand. They are hardly perfect, and many, such as Hamilton's attempt to justify the absence of a Bill of Rights, show that these articles sought to employ every argument available to make it seem that the Constitution was a paragon of a social contract (rather than a document meticulously written as a result of numerous compromises with little universal ideological consistency), but they are nonetheless important to have in one's library.
Of course, it's easy to find every single one of them online for free, not to mention all the other documents this edition adds on, such as the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. It is a good thing, then, that this edition is so cheap, as it is certainly convenient to have them all in a relatively small book that preserves all your markings. The edition also tries to overcome this burden of free access to its material through a masterfully written introduction, through a table of contents that briefly summarizes the argument contained within each article, and through the numerous footnotes that concisely expand upon the many now archaic references to the Romans and the Classics that Publius tends to make. For these reasons, I find having this precise copy of the Federalist Papers worth the 7 or so bucks that it costs.
The one thing I dislike about it, and why I give it 4 stars rather than 5, is that the paper and ink are almost of newspaper quality, so that extensive reading will tend to leave black markings on one's fingers. This does get annoying when writing papers about it and flipping around its pages.

A Contention and a Suggestion.......2006-08-25
One of the reviewers below challenges the notion that the US was ever a Democracy, however, he (apologies if it's a 'she') is viewing the Federalist Papers from the perspective of modern times, and that is a fallacy in reviewing this work, but fortunately it's an instructive fallacy.
The issue with the Federalist Papers is that although it is the leading arguments for the creation of a more centralized government (to replace the Articles of Confederation which seemed inpractible), not all of these arguments were adopted in the Constitution, and some that were did not survive very long. As a result, you may get the wrong impression that the Federalist Papers=the Constitution. Remember, Hamilton's party, the Federalists, did not survive much longer after the defeat of Adams by Jefferson in the 1800 election. The populism of Jefferson and Madison were the ultimate winners *at the time*.
And my *at the time* comment is important. Nowadays the federal government of the US holds a superior and decisive position in the governing of its people; this has not always been the case. In the early-to-mid 19th century, federal power was severely limited when it came to internal affairs; most of the government was conducted at the local level, with some county and state control thrown in where applicable. So *at the time*, the fact that the Senate had 2 members from each state (and appointed by the state legislature) regardless of population was *not* a measure that was anti-democratic in purpose. Democracy existed because the government was predominantly local and the people were predominantly involved in its affairs.
Thus my contention; now for the suggestion: if your project is strictly to research the creation of the US Constitution, than the Federalist Papers by themselves are fine. If, however, you are more interested in how the Constitution affected American society at that time, I would recommend that you start by reading de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", and working backwards. The immediate results of the Constitution are best expressed in de Tocqueville (he toured the United States and published his work in Europe within 50 years of the ratification) because its not the causes of the Constitution he is discussing, but its effects. After you have completed Democracy in America, then you'll be able to approach the Federalist (and of course the Anti-Federalist) Papers with the understanding of what worked, what didn't, and maybe what we need to work again for.
