Follow your nose to a hilarious Stink-fest no kid will want to miss!

GROSS ME OUT! STINK-O! SKUNKSVILLE!

Stink Moody’s class is going on a field trip to the Gross-Me-Out exhibit at the science museum, and he can’t wait to see the Vomit Machine, the Burp-O-Meter, and the Musical Farts. Best of all, when he gets to the Everybody Stinks exhibit, Stink discovers that his very own nose has amazing sniffing abilities — and he learns that some people have real jobs sniffing stuff for NASA! Soon the junior olfactory wiz is engrossed in toilet water, corpse flowers, and all things smelly, and he and Sophie of the Elves are set to go toe-to-toe in a stinky sneaker contest. Will Stink’s fetid footwear be foul enough to earn him a Golden Clothespin Award? Stink’s loyal fans will be holding their breath for his latest outrageous solo adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Teacher's Grade: B.......2007-09-18

My sons (8 and 11) both enjoyed this book quite a bit, so I read it myself. At first, I was put off by the awkwardly edited sentences, but as the book went on I realized that the story was pretty good, the characters inviting, and the computer-drawn pictures lively.

Due to the choppiness of the sentences I won't read this aloud to my students in 2nd grade, but I will certainly add it to my class library and recommend it to some less-advanced readers who are eager to tackle a chapter book.

5 out of 5 stars Stink is as happy as a pig in slop........2007-06-05

Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. He and his friends, Webster and Sophie, are on a class field trip at the science museum --- and the exhibit is called "Gross-Me-Out: The Wonderful World of Smelly Stuff." Stink starts with the giant nose, where he gets to gawk at enormous nose hairs and learn how boogers are made. He loves it!

But when Stink's teacher, Mrs. D., dares him to experience the "Everybody Stinks" exhibit, he has to summon up his courage. After all, no one else will even go near it. One whiff of the B.O. scent almost does him in, but he recovers long enough to sniff more smelly odors, including dirt, rotten eggs, skunk scent and perfume. It appears that Stink has a real talent for smelling. He can smell better than anyone else in his class. In addition, he learns tons of smelly facts.

At lunch, the kids read flyers about a stinky sneaker contest the museum is putting on. Naturally, Stink must enter. Others are interested as well, so he'll have plenty of competition.

At home, Stink demonstrates The Nose and even impresses his big sister, Judy Moody. Stink is confident that his Nose will make him famous someday. When he researches the science of smelling, he finds information about the corpse flower, the world's stinkiest blossom, rumored to smell worse than outhouses, dead elephants and rotten fish.

Stink is inspired to create some terribly stinky perfume and sets up a Franken-stink lab. He and Sophie work up a recipe (including toilet water, dead-flower water, pickle juice and more), but he's distracted when Sophie tells him she's planning to compete in the stinky sneaker contest. Stink is determined to win.

He's positive that his reeking old sneakers have a great chance to win the competition. But his plan is foiled when Judy deodorizes them with sweetly fragrant powder. What is he going to do? He can't pour anything (like his stinky perfume) in them since the rules say the shoes must stink from being worn. Can his entry be saved?

In a startling turn of events, Stink saves the day when misfortune strikes the contest. He also gets to meet a professional smeller who has actually sniffed a corpse flower. It all makes for a happy (or at least smelly) ending.

This is another enjoyable book in the Stink series, sure to appeal to young readers (especially to boys who are enthralled with the grosser aspects of life). As always, author Megan McDonald manages to tickle readers' funny bones, slip in a little subtle education and tell a good story.

3 out of 5 stars Too hard!!.......2001-06-28

The mysteries are cool. ( This is why I gave it 2 stars.) There are ten of them in the book. When you are done reading the mysteries they ask you how Encyclopedia Brown figured it out. You can never figure them out. They don't give you enough info. This makes it not very fun! Don't try the other books. They all have the same problem. Just don't waste your money. ( I gave the one star for trying.)

4 out of 5 stars they're tough and fun to read........1999-11-04

They're tough and fun to read. I like black jack's treasure. It's about black jack's treasure and a tree with a mark on it. It's also about this kid named Wilford Wiggins. He tries to fool kids too.

Where are the world's stinkiest sneakers?

Colin has spent weeks perfecting his sneaker odor for the Stinkiest Sneakers in the World contest. If he wins, he'll get three brand-new pairs of Slam Dunkers sneakers: one for himself, one for his little sister, Amy, and one for his best pal, Webster.
But now, after weeks of working toward stinky perfection -- not washing his feet, wearing no socks, jogging to get his feet juicy, and even sleeping with his sneakers on -- the nasty, stinky sneakers are missing!

Nasty Stinky Sneakers
If you like mystery books you will like Nasty Stinky Sneakers by Eve Bunting. This is an awesome book. Colin has spent weeks making his shoes smell really bad for a contest. If he wins he will get three pairs of slam Dunker shoes. One for his little sister Amy, one for him self, and one for his best friend Webster. But now after weeks of working toward stinky sneakers, they are mising. Will he find them. I think this book is really good because it is funny, and my socks have smelt really bad.

1 out of 5 stars bad language.......2002-10-20

i feel this is not a book for a third grader because amy in the book refers to her brother as a word that i cannot mention on here which should read dirt bag instead of the word they use. my daughter is in third grade and read it and asked why there are bad words in the book. i plan on having it pulled from our school

4 out of 5 stars Very fun read for newly independent readers.......1999-01-29

My 7 yr old really enjoyed this book. Light mystery with nothing scary but lots of fun is right where he's at. I appreciate that this book is also well written. I feel it's important for kids to read books with good sentence structure and interesting vocabulary, and this book has it. (There are some "series" and other books out there with fun titles and stories, but poor writing.)

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......1998-07-15

This book said that Jack had dirty shoes. Children who read it WILL follow them and get scolded by their parents to proof that they can follow the story. So please don't ever write like this okay!!!!!

Amazon.com Reviews

The creator of Polkabats and Octopus Slacks puts his playful pen to paper again in Dutch Sneakers and Fleakeepers. Calef Brown's story-poems are nonsensical and exuberant, and his muted, sophisticated Cubist paintings join the party with equal zeal. Did you know that fleas "learn to speak German / more quickly than bees"? Or that "bad teeth" aren't really bad, they just need "a cleaning and something to chew"? No, resist the impulse to look for lessons: Brown--a hip, modern Edward Lear--is here to have fun. Children will adore meeting the feared "Tattlesnake" (with unusual stripes and big ears), an electric-guitar-playing grandmother, a runaway waffle, a mysterious fish ("Green like asparagus. / Flat like a dish"), Sir Dance-a-lot, and the rest of Brown's crazy--yes, crazy--cast of characters. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

In the tradition of Edward Lear, Calef Brown has fashioned fourteen nonsense poems so wacky that both young and old will be unable to suppress their laughter. Invented words and sounds and their visual counterparts create both an audible and a visual feast. This is the kind of silliness children (and many adults) relish.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Artsy Amusement.......2006-09-02

Calef Brown uses funky-folksy illustrations and cheeky verse to describe fourteen imaginative vignettes. The younger set will enjoy spreads featuring topical buzzwords and images near and dear to them in Seven Bad Teeth, Runaway Waffle, Mysterious Fish and Olf (the impoverished pirate). Older children appreciate the unexpected scenarios of grandma jamming for adoring fans, beetles powdering donuts on a sugar beach or commuters floating away with bubble gum balloons. Kids pick up on your own amusement in reading the clever tale of a Moon Reunion and the limerick spoof Jack in the Bucket. Children ages two to seven will smile and puzzle over this wonderfully odd book.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Hit with My 6 Year Old!.......2000-12-07

Amazon.com delivered this book to my son as a gift from a very wise and whimsical friend. He loved it instantly and it became THE requested bedtime book night after night after night. And, that was OK, because we (the grown-ups) love it too! The poems are wacky and sometimes demented and make sense in that dream-sense or nonsense way. You'll laugh and laugh as our family does -- and you'll each have a favorite (mine is "Mysterious Fish"). Promote a love of language and of silliness -- buy this book for a child you love.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story poems for everyone.......2000-05-08

Calef Brown has written a collection of poems that are real winners. They are easy to read with modern wacky language and rhymes that kids will just love. The accompanying illustrations are rich in color and detail and compliment each poem. Everyone in the family will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Calef Brown.......2000-03-29

A wonderful follow-up to one of the most clever and fun children's books of last year. Mr. Brown's illustrations -- vivid, color-saturated, witty, and just sinister enough to keep adults and kids interested -- are heightened by DUTCH SNEAKERS' delightfully loopy verse.

5 out of 5 stars Love it Love it Love it!.......2000-03-22

In an age of Disney-overload, the inventive, clever verses are a joy to read.A book for anyone who is tired of reading the same thing over and over, it stands out as a delightful and vibrant book.

Do animals wear clothes, take baths or have jobs? Find out in this delighful humorous book with hilarious illustrations that rhymes as it goes along. Enjoyable to read and perfect for little ones that loose interest quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Good and bad.......2004-07-20

I'd rather give this a 3.5...

Good: Charming drawings, fun whimsicality, nice rhyming

Bad: Storyline kind of dropped in and out for me. First it was about what doesn't happen "dogs don't wear sneakers", then it was about imagining things that don't happen and finally it mentioned dreaming. It just didn't quite flow for me.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL book by a great author.......2003-10-03

My kids love Laura Numeroff books anyway, but this has to be one of their all time favorites. My two-year-old quotes this book all the time, and if we ever want to make her laugh, we just recite a few verses. It is perfect for bedtime, and one that definitely belongs in every child's library. The illustrations are wonderful, too.

3 out of 5 stars gorgeous book.......2000-09-27

Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers is a gorgeous book. It is a series of ridiculous juxtapositions; my favorite of which being the wonderful illustration for "goats never shave." The pictures for "Moose don't go bowling" and "Fish don't eat bagels" made me laugh.

My wife (who is very practical) says that the book is "useful" because after you read the book to a child, you can then give them a sheet that says something like: --blank-- don't wear --blank--. The child may then fill in the blanks and draw their own ridiculous picture-thereby expanding their imagination.

Underhanded schemes and ulterior motives aside, this book is cute; and worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Nonsense!.......1999-07-20

Laura Joffe Numeroff has a flair for the ridiculous. This charming tale gives the reader a serious case of the giggles from beginning to end. The illustrations are priceless as well. You will read this one again and again!

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly Peek appends a note about his version of the Texas folk song, along with invitations for children to make up their own lines to sing when they master the easy musical arrangement appended. Starting with dandy black-and-white drawings of a woodland, Peek gradually builds up to full-color illustrations of a gala occasion. Flashes of red and green show up first when Mary Squirrel and Henry Raccoon meet on the way to Kate Bear's birthday party. The revelry at the gathering is heightened by Kate's yellow sweater, the blue, purple, orange, etc., in the guests' costumes. Standout details include the Bears' formal garden in bloom, status-symbol house furnishing (marble statues of twin bears flank the fireplace and support the mantel), imposing birthday cake et al. The towering confection is an uncommon treat; so is the book. Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is such a great book. I've used it with many many preschoolers and children, and the remark I always get is "again, again"...

5 out of 5 stars My kids adore this book!.......2006-02-25

The younger loves the beautiful pictures and singing along. The older loves looking for all the little details in the pictures. They both love substituting the names of the characters for their own friends' names! Both learned their colors through this book without realizing what they were actually doing. This is one book I don't mind reading over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Fun Book.......2003-02-09

I bought this book for my nephew and the entire family has enjoyed his singing the pages, he had it memorized in no time and he is only 2 years old!!! I would recommend this book to anyone with young children, not just for their enjoyment but for the entire family.

I remember reading this book back in kindergarten and the first grade. It was the first book I ever learned to read. I loved this book so much that I read it until I had it memorized. It's too bad the original cover is not printed in this edition. I'm going to pass this one down to my cousin, Adam, whose only 4. Hopefully, we can continue the tradition so this will be his first book he ever learns to read.

5 out of 5 stars This is a classic book for colors!.......2001-12-13

Merle Peek does an excellent job at getting kindergarteners to be actively involved in this book. I am currently majoring in Elementary Education and I did a bulletin board on this book and everyone loved it! My professor said this was a classic color book. The book is about Katy, it's her birthday and all her friends wear different color clothing to her party. From yellow sweater to green sneakers to pink hat, this book has all the basic colors. This was a song that was written into a book, so it's very rhythmic and is easy to follow. The song is on the back of the book, so all children can enjoy! I loved it and would recommend it to all beginning readers!! Try and read it, what do you got to lose?? I give this book five stars!!

Want to run faster, jump higher, play better? For years we've been told that we can achieve these grandiose goals with the help of high-performance athletic footwear. What used to be the lowly gym shoe has risen to a revered wardrobe staple. The Sneaker Book: An Anatomy of the Industry and an Icon, by journalist Tom Vanderbilt, relates the story of the sneaker in a breezy and fact-filled manner that perfectly captures the heart of the subject. Starting with a brief history of both the footwear and the $11 billion industry that now feeds off of it, Vanderbilt looks at the design, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and advertising that have taken the sneaker business to astronomical heights. His evaluation is augmented with a variety of charts, corporate profiles, previously published articles, and even cartoons that lend depth and shading to the topic. This informative and compact book reads like a special magazine issue devoted to a single subject, and it is indeed the first in a new series of similar books that will each focus on a popular consumer product. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

The first cultural history of America's most popular footwear, and an eye-opening look at an $11-billion-a-year industry, The Sneaker Book is an entertaining, informative look at the economic and pop cultural factors surrounding these globally produced All-American icons. Supplemented by charts, statistics, and graphics, The Sneaker Book documents the costs and profits of the $11-billion-a-year sneaker business on every level. Literary excerpts help put America's craze for "kicks" into context. The Sneaker Book swooshes past the hype, puts the numbers on the table, and takes a fresh look at familiar--if unexamined--footwear.

"The Sneaker Book: Anatomy of an Industry and An Icon" is well-written and excellently researched. The badly-placed black-and-white sneaker photos and its academic tone, however, offer the book as an informative but slightly boring term paper on the sneaker industry. Casual readers will probably (and rightly) want more color and certainly more sneaker photographs, but these flaws do not seriously hamper the book.

3 out of 5 stars Good Assemblage of Facts, Lousy Photo Placement.......1999-10-17

On the whole, I liked this informative book. Mr. Vanderbilt does an admirable job of giving us an insider's perspective on the athletic footwear industry and how it has insinuated itself into popular culture. I also enjoyed the stories and comments in the sidebars which bolster his perspective.

That said, the major thing that mars this book was the decision to place the photos of the sneakers along the spine. In terms of design, it was a poor decision, and it detracts from the text instead of enhancing it. I found myself flattening the book out as much as I could so I could see the photos, but even with that, the whole illustrative purpose of the photos was lost. If this book is ever updated, I suggest that the photos be placed somewhere that the reader can see them in their entirety.

4 out of 5 stars A must for sneaker freaks.......1999-06-19

For a short book, Vanderbilt puts forth a lot of good information about athletic shoes, their history, and their meaning, especially among kids today. If you love sneakers, you'll love this book...
