Book Description

In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.

4 out of 5 stars Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.......2007-10-03

I thought this book was very informative as to the life and habits of the Chinese around the turn of the 20th century. Relationships have changed little since that time, people are always misunderstanding situations. It was beautifully described and written.

5 out of 5 stars True friendship.......2007-10-02

This book is not a "feel good" book, in fact you will be choking back the tears by the end of it. The book goes deep into the relationship between two friends starting with early days of footbinding and on to through the ups and downs of life. It is well worth your time to read!

3 out of 5 stars So-So.......2007-10-02

Based on all the reviews, I had expected this book to be much better than it was. I found the chapter on the feet-binding process well-written and interesting, but the rest of the novel was fairly uneventful for me. I thought a lot of the messages the women were writing to each other were too "sappy". I really felt no emotional connection to any of the women - except maybe for Auntie (Beautiful Moon's mother). I'm glad I read the book, but I think it's overrated.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-10-01

Easy read but distrubing to learn of the cultural practices that young chinese girls had to endure.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone I Know Loves This Book.......2007-09-29

Once I read Snow Flower, I passed it on to a friend, who passed it on, and on, and on. Everyone has loved this book. For myself, I found it engaging and endlessly entertaining. It has a beginning, a middle and an end that are all wonderful. The writer has a beautiful way of telling the story of an enduring friendship. I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing but raves.......2007-09-29

After reading and enjoying this book, I purchased several copies to give as gifts. The recipents gave the book raving reports and consider it one of the best gifts ever received. It is also a book that will be consulted over and over again as it is informative, entertaining and humorous.

5 out of 5 stars Go from Beginning Watcher to Vivid Describer of the Action.......2007-09-18

Watching Baseball Smarter will appeal to youngsters around 9-12 who are eager to grab as much baseball knowledge as possible by attending and watching games on television. For those young people, scoring, colorful terms, and obscure rules can make the game seem more mysterious than it is. At the same time, learn those elements of active watching and a youngster can develop the basics to enjoy being a lifelong fan.

If someone had given me this book at that age, I would have treasured Watching Baseball Smarter above all over gifts I got that at that time. I would have been most thrilled by the illustrations of how the various pitches are thrown.

Remember that observation when you consider if you know any budding fans who would be thrilled to have this book.

As for the claim that the book is also for semi-experts and deeply serious geeks, I don't think so. I didn't see any material that wasn't well known to me by the time I was 15. And I was hardly a semi-expert or a deeply serious geek. I just enjoyed watching and attending the games.

Don't give this book to a serious baseball fan; you'll embarrass yourself if you do.

Here are few questions to test your ability to enjoy the book:

1. What is the infield fly rule?

2. What is a double switch?

3. What is a catcher's earned run average?

4. What is a safety squeeze?

5. How do you keep score?

If know all five, this book isn't for you. If you know four, you'll get an occasional nugget from the book. If you know three or fewer, this book is a good choice for you.

On this reading, the main pleasure was from remembering when I first learned the material and from an occasional bit of trivia that was new to me. The former pleasure was what kept me reading, and I was disappointed that the book was aimed mostly at an elementary level . . . having found the subtitle to be misleading in terms of the book's relevance for me.

4 out of 5 stars Baseball Fan's Good Guide.......2007-09-10

As a sixty year baseball fan, I think I know most everything about the game. However, Zack came up with some new/clarifying information for me. By the way, the game has changed since I started following it in the mid-1940s.

1 out of 5 stars pages missing.......2007-09-08

Pages 79 to 110 are completely missing.

If binding is baseball, the people who did the binding would be kicked out of bush league.

Also, the information is very elementary and meant basically for elementary students.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2007-09-24

This is an excellent book for customer service - no matter what position you hold within a company!! It is easy to read - written as a story instead of college vocabulary!! I would recommend everyone read this book!!

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas.......2007-09-17

Very quick read packed with a lot of great practices. Storyline is a bit cheesy, but worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas in an easy to read format.......2007-09-15

I used this book as the basis for educating several of my small business owner clients on how to create raving fans. When I first started the book, I was turned off by the story telling approach. Then I realized that there was real content on how to produce top quality customer service. I made a list of great ideas from the book and easily got dozens of good ideas.
I would recommend this book because it quickly gets the point across on the importance of raving fans and how to generate them.

2 out of 5 stars Effective Review on this Book.........2007-09-01

A review doesn't have to be 5 paragraphs. This book was a simple story which illustrated a simple point about customer service. That's it. I purchased it thinking I would have "Raving Fans" but the book is far too simple and effective service is more complex. If you're hungry for growth and knowledge don't read it or feel influenced to purchase it. It's something I would imagine a very low level customer service worker reading for a little inspiration. If you're starving for just a little inspiration and 2nd grade storytelling, then purchase it.

2 out of 5 stars raving fans: a revolutionary approach to customer service.......2007-09-01

this is a good book, with good solid business philosophy put across in a very readable, if a little campy, format. the frame stories are effective, but i think the essence of this work could have been communicated in even fewer pages.

3 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics.......2005-11-05

This book is very vague in some of the proofs that it contains, however if you have a good understanding of differential equations and some thermodynamics it is fairly easy to follow along, it does make a lot of assumptions that it doesnt explain, so there will be times when you are left scratching your head about a statement they have made, would be nice if it included an index to reference material within the book, i have found it useful in my work (biochemical engineering), however it is not a book i would recommend buying unless you have a working knowledge of the area or someone who does to help you

3 out of 5 stars Biological fluid dynamics - first of its kind.......2005-06-16

A honest truth is that, to can understand the concept in this book, you must need the help of an expert like your professor or TA. The material is hard to follow, many of the proofs are incomplete/ or lack adequate steps. The assumptions are not explicity made, which will lead you to ponder on one problem for many hours.
But the book has a very nice mixture of engineering concepts (fluid dynamics) and its biological relavance, the first of its kind. Although conceptiouly it is very hard, the mathematical models presented are phenomenal and are presented with great care. To be sucessfully in the course, you must need a good balance in both attending the lectures as well as reading the book.

Product Description

Mr. Darcy's Diary presents the story of the unlikely courtship of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from Darcy's point of view--sharing his innermost thoughts and feelings. This graceful imagining and sequel to Price and Prejudice explains Darcy s moodiness and the difficulties of his reluctant relationship as he struggles to avoid falling in love with Miss Bennett. Though seemingly stiff and stubborn at times, Darcy s words prove him also to be quite devoted and endearing qualities that eventually win over Miss Bennett s heart. This continuation of a classic romantic novel is charming and elegant, much like Darcy himself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-28

I absolutely loved this book. It was not particularly deep and it was very easy reading, but as I am in college, I get enough heavy stuff. It came at a perfect time and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I also gave it to my roommate to read and she loved it too, even though she does not particularly like Pride and Prejudice. The only thing I would say about it is that you had better have read the original before this book, or it won't make sense. I give it two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Too short..........2007-09-07

This was a very quick read and I did enjoy it, however it was a little too short. I also had quite a bit of the original dialogue as quotes and for the size of this book I thought it was too much. I did like the idea though and this gives some insight into Mr. Darcy's perspective of all the events plus a little idea of what could have happened after the P&P ends. Enjoyable read but not the best sequel out there.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy's Diary.......2007-09-05

Amanda Grange really kept the same language and tone that Jane Austen used in the original story of Pride & Prejudice. She retold the same story from Darcy's point of view. I thought she did an excellent job.

I enjoyed how she added some witty examples of their married life together at the end. Even with having to deal with all the crazies from both of their families, I think they are going to make it.

4 out of 5 stars Fitzwilliam Darcy---humanized!.......2007-09-05

The aspect of this novel by Amanda Grange which pleases me most is that she has been successful in turning Fitzwilliam Darcy into a flesh and blood man. Since Pride and Prejudice is essentially written from Elizabeth Bennet's point of view, at times I want an explanation of what Darcy is thinking. This book managed to do that for me. Even knowing that these words, thoughts and ideas do not come from Jane Austen, I am still completely satisfied with thinking "my" Mr. Darcy would have been like this. He was arrogant, he did believe in his own self-importance, he did interfere in Bingley's life. But, he also learned from Elizabeth and Bingley and the situations he found himself in that he could change. He didn't need to stay so stiff and formal. He could actually learn to tease and be teased and the world as he knew it would still remain on its axis.

I found this book to be slow going at first. I really didn't think I was going to be able to accept this Darcy as the same one who lives in my imagination. But a strange thing happened as I continued to read. I began to really like this man. Amanda Grange had made him a true, real, loveable person for me. As most of the other reviewers have said, I also am a huge fan of the Jane Austen books. Ms Grange does not try to be Jane Austen. She tries to be herself, giving us her version of how she thinks Fitzwilliam Darcy might have responded to his situations. I applaud her effort and recommend this book as a worthwhile read.

This is just a little extra information in case you get confused (as I did). This book came out in Britain in 2005 in hardcover and was titled DARCY'S DIARY. It has a full head portrait of Darcy on the cover, quite interesting but maybe just a little too feminine for "my" Darcy. The paperback was published in 2007 and is titled MR. DARCY'S DIARY. I, of course, was not careful and managed to buy them both. The paperback has only a partial portrait, probably because the publisher discovered that each of us has our own mental picture of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Both books are identical in every way except as I have stated. Now, my advice is to just read and enjoy one copy or the other.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading!.......2007-08-16

I enjoyed this book for it kept me interested to a point that I "soaked it up" and finished it in a day but I kept reviewing the best parts I enjoyed most.

3 out of 5 stars Fan Handbook: Selection, Application, and Design.......2007-06-08

A good addition to other fan design books but incomplete by itself as it lacks any real guidelines on the mechanical design.
It should include more on impeller stressing (blade bending & hoop stress), shaft critical speed and impeller resonance.
There are a few anomalies but also some good flow information.
The axial and centrifugal flow design data is good except for centrifugal fan casings which really only covers wide, high volume designs. If you are looking for detailed centrifugal casing design for high pressure blowers then look elsewhere (I am still looking).
The chapter on system resistance is very informative. The other sections on fan applications and the different fan types is also very good.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not over the fence, either........2002-02-26

As a basic primer on fan concepts, this is a good book. It also serves as a sort of non-engineer's guide to fan design and allows someone with very little knowledge or experience create a fan design of some reasonable worth.

Unfortunately, I was looking for a bit more of an in depth aerodynamic study and have yet to find a piece of literature that I like. I understand that many of the older books on cascade aerodynamics are quite good, but they are no longer in publication, and this didn't really satisfy my interests.

Particularly annoying to me is the lack of derivation of the methodology in the fan design section. Some basic magic formulas are given and then tied together with some basic velocity diagrams to yield a fan blade design methodology.

4 out of 5 stars An execellent, practical work; worth owning........1998-08-02

The "Fan Handbook" is the finest book yet written on fan design, implementation, use, and trouble shooting. The book a delight to read and use. Mr. Bleier, unlike many techno-types, is fine writer (and I suspect re-writer) and a careful idea organizer. The work has many, many professionally shot photographs and is fully illustrated. There are no crude computer generated drawings anywhere! It's well indexed and heavily cross-referenced.

The book's slant is to the practical and explicitly avoids calculus, but it is by no means elementary. Any person with high school algebra and trig can understand the well-presented equations and solve all the case study problems with a little effort. Math phobes needn't be put off; the book is not "too" mathematical.

The only thing that prevented me from awarding five stars to this terrific book was an important omission. No mention is made of specialized fans for cooling towers. I had especially hoped to learn mo! re about design requirements for static presure regain/velocity recovery fan stacks for very large fans. But this shortcoming should not disuade any cooling tower engineers from purchasing this book, since all of the principles discussed do fully apply to cooling towers. END

This is a delightful read for Cubs Fans. (I happen to be one living in exile in New Jersey!) It offers comfort for Cubbie fans woven with good day to day advice for living in general. I do have two beefs with the author though. A) He suggests that the Cubs are pretty much a White Collar Team. (B.S.!) and B) He winds up the book on a downer. "A Century of Losing: 100 Years 100 Frustrations". Other than that, It is a must for any Cub fan.

This book is a MUST for the person interested in becoming a better Cubs fan. I work with a group of women that LOVE to go to the Cubs games. They invited me last year - I had fun, but didn't know much. I was given this book to "teach me" about the Cubs and how a Cubs fan exists. Ellis gives details about being a Cubs fan that are so helpful such as "TANY - There's Always Next Year" and "Beer Will Make it Better". The illustrations were great, and the glossary will come in handy when I go to my next game. I got a lot out of the book, but I know that even the most knowledgeable fans will find lots of new and interesting information in this extremely funny book. You won't be disappointed - it's any easy read, and entertaining. Highly recommend!

Product Description

In When IT Hits the Fan, business owner and CEO Wes Herschberger weaves a taut, suspenseful storyline about a fictional company, Byler Filter Products, focusing on the interaction between Robert Patterson, the well-intentioned CFO, Bill Marbach, the brilliant but misunderstood IT manager, and the company's Board of Directors. Miscommunications, missteps and mistakes made by all the principal players culminate in ruinous disaster and threaten to shut down the successful company in only one week's time. The can't-put-it-down tale is followed by an easy-to-adopt practical plan that all companies, large or small, can begin following today. Through riveting plot lines, cliffhangers and plain-speak that all readers, regardless of their level of IT savvy, can clearly understand, Herschberger aims a bright spotlight on the dwindling return on technology investments and potential data disasters many companies are now facing, and like the book's fictional characters, don t even know it. Packed with a double-whammy of win-win advice for business owners, financial managers and IT personnel, When IT Hits the Fan will teach them how to greatly reduce their company's risk of a crippling data disaster and turbo-charge their ROI in technology at the same time!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read for business executives.......2007-03-07

This is a great book that should be mandatory reading for any company that uses Information Technology. It does a great job of providing perspective from both the IT staff point of view as well as the executive.

The real premise of the book is how managed IT services can help companies bring their IT under control.

5 out of 5 stars A New Classic.......2006-11-28

In the tradition of Goldratt's "The Goal", Herschberger crafts an interesting tale with an important lesson for all business managers. As someone who has lived through much of what Herschberger describes, I enthusiastically recommend this book. Don't just read it, apply the lessons as well!

5 out of 5 stars IT admins need this book.......2006-11-20

If you are an IT admin frustrated with a nonexistent budget get this book. It clearly explains the difficulties of dealing with aging systems in a language that executives understand. Read this book and get it into the hands of your CIO if you are tired of stomping out fires day after day. You can only get by with duct tape and bailing twine for so long.

5 out of 5 stars Shows that IT doesn't have to be mysterious.......2006-11-17

"When IT Hits the Fan" shows how bad it can get if you don't take your information technology seriously. It then shows how you to implement a plan to not only know how to manage your IT but also how to see a return on investment. I recommend this book to any executive that wants to take charge of their IT rather than hope everything is going to be okay.

5 out of 5 stars This book will help every business owner out there!.......2006-11-17

Every owner of a business, large or small, should read this book! Every IT manager should read it, too. I love the way the first section of the book is a fictional story that teaches the lesson in a way I could easily understand. The characters were terrific, human, and likable, even when they were making mistakes all along the way. I could NOT put this book down until The End! The Executive Summary that follows the fiction is extremely helpful and easy to follow. I especially like the Quick Checklist at the end. Wes Herschberger has written a one-of-a-kind book that will help keep companies safe and earn them more $$$, too!

4 out of 5 stars knitting .......2007-09-30

This is a great book for knitting even if you are not a fan of Harry Potter. The book will teach you step-by-step how to knit a sweater even if you have never made one. I suggest that you buy first an easy learn to knit book because this book goes a bit beyond the basics of teaching stitches and techniques. They assume that you know most of the basics. The book captures the spirit of Harry Potter well and really imitates the clothes from the movie. A must for a Harry Potter fan!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Potter-fans!.......2007-09-14

Lovely book with charming patterns, I want to knit them all! Written with humour, gives a good read and many new ideas for knitters of all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-09-07

Lots of wonderful patterns. A few that don't exactly follow the books or movies, but almost all do, and they are fantastic patterns. Good instructions, detailed, easy to follow for the most part. Nice yarn substitution information, great photos. I am so very glad that I have this book!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as charmed.......2007-09-05

It's an ok book. Many of the patterns can be found ( for free ) on the internet. Can't really say much more. Kinda blah.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-09-02

I thought this book would be packed full of several Harry Potter designs but sadly is isn't. I have seen much better patterns online at various websites. I could be wrong here but where are all the different scarves, hats, and sweaters at ? Again if you are thinking this book is packed full of Harry Potter knits, you will be sadly disappointed.

Book Description

Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries.

We meet the people who influenced Goodwin's early life: her father, who emerged from a traumatic childhood without a trace of self-pity or rancor and who taught his daughter early on that she should say whatever she thought and should bring her voice into any conversation at any time; her mother, whose heart problems left her with the arteries of a seventy-year-old when she was only in her thirties and whose love of books allowed her to break the boundaries of the narrow world to which she was confined by her chronic illness; her two older sisters; her friends on the block; the local storekeepers; her school friends and teachers.

This is also the story of a girlhood in which the great religious festivals of the Catholic church and the seasonal imperatives of baseball combined to produce a passionate love of history, ceremony, and ritual. It is the story of growing up in what seemed on the surface a more innocent era until one recalls the terror of polio, the paranoia of McCarthyism reflected even in the children's games, the obsession with A-bomb drills in school, and the ugly face of racial prejudice. It was a time whose relative tranquillity contained the seeds of the turbulent decade of the sixties.

4 out of 5 stars Wait till Next Year.......2007-07-13

Most interesting for me since I am a "wait till next year" Red Sox fan. She's an excellent writer and commentator and this lives up to her standard.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Read!.......2007-06-27

Ms. Goodwin knows how to tell a good story. In addition to telling us about her childhood in a New York City suburb in the 1950s, she also talks about the changes America was going through in this time period: economic development and the impact on the family, the beginnings of the civil rights movement, the "end" of baseball as the American pasttime. The book is well-written and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on taking your daughter to the game!.......2007-04-27

Great book. It inspires me to take my two little girls to games. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars A Fan's Notes.......2007-04-10

Goodwin grew up in New York in the 40's, and this memoir tracks her Brooklyn Dodgers through their World Series win in 1956.

5 out of 5 stars Something to Touch the Heart.......2007-03-27

So many people recommended Doris Kearns Goodwin's charming memoir, "Wait Till Next Year," that I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Experiencing her youth in the forties and fifties as I and many of my reading friends did, Goodwin struck chords that reverberated movingly with us. Though the story takes place in Rockville Centre, New York, a suburb just a train ride away from Brooklyn, her pictures of herself and her friends in front yards and back yards, her schools and churches, drug store and neighborhood could have been taken in any American suburb of those distant days.

These memories make up a different kind of "fan's notes," as she tracks the ups and downs and near misses of her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, the team she followed faithfully as a six-year-old in 1949, until "dem bums" finally delivered a World Series championship in 1956. Her team, with Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella, and even their radio announcer, Vin Scully, moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and became my wife's favorite team. My "Whiz Kids," the Philadelphia Phillies of the fifties, with Robin Roberts and Ritchie Ashburn and Eddie Waitkus received mention and reminded my wife and me of the days when you could count on the same players returning loyally to play year after year for the same team.

In addition to the thread of baseball running through the book, Goodwin touches on national events that characterized the times for anyone who lived through them: the death of FDR, the Korean War, the Rosenberg spy case, McCarthyism, and forced school integration in Little Rock. She remembers Elvis and James Dean and covers faithfully the rituals of growing up in the Catholic Church. There is something here to touch the heart of anyone who grew up in those naive times of the 1940s and 1950s.
