Katie Chandler’s life is pure magic–literally. As an executive assistant at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., she’s seen more than her share of fantastical occurrences. And she’s fallen under the all-too-human spell of attraction to Owen, a hunky wizard and coworker. Owen, however, is preoccupied. Someone has broken into his office and disrupted top-secret files, and it reeks of an inside job. CEO Merlin (yes, the Merlin) and taps Katie and her special ability to uncover the magical mole.
Keeping her feelings in check while sleuthing alongside Owen, Katie is shocked to discover that her immunity to magic is waning, putting her in grave danger. Soon she’s surrendering to the charms and enchantments of everyone and everything around her, including a killer pair of red stilettos. Katie must now conjure up her natural instincts to get to the bottom of the break-in, regain her power, and win the wizard of her dreams.

A lot of fun.......2007-09-20
I really enjoyed this book. Good follow up to the first in the series. It had some nice character development. Looking forward to the next book!
great writing, but romance lost fizz.......2007-09-07
I really enjoy Shanna Swendson's writing. And the plot of the book is fantastic, literally and figuratively. In Katie's new job, she has been tasked with finding the spy/traitor within the company. Along the way, her own safety is threatened. The fun part is when her parents go to New York to visit her and she finds out that her Mother has the same ability as she does, to see magic.
The suspense with Owen, powerful wizard, is getting painful. All of his blushing and not coming right out to show interest in Katie drove me nuts.
Another I-can't-put-it-down installment.......2007-05-10
I'm glad that this series from Shanna Swendson is proving to be solid. I was very pleased to have another book I couldn't put down. Katie Chandler is deep into her work as MSI. Unfortunatly, company secrets at leaking out, leading to the assumption that a spy has either infiltrated the company, or one of their own loyal employees has turned against them. Katie's special talents will help to solve the puzzle, unless that traitor can get to her first.
Good book, relationship not convincing.......2007-03-28
The book was a good continuation from the first one, but the relationship between the main character and the man she liked was just not convincing. I don't want to give away any details, but I like a relationship in the books I read to progress throughout the book, but the one in this book was just sort of thrown into the end.
Smart, Witty & Inventive!.......2007-03-21
Enchanted, Inc. and Once Upon Stilettos weave an intricate and inventive story of magic, heroes and the battle of good versus evil. I love Shanna Swendson's take on Merlin and Arthur. This is a must read for anyone who wants to believe in magic and the power the most ordinary person. I have recommended this series to everyone I can think of!
Also, check out Shanna Swendson's website, her daily blog is always entertaining. According to the website, there will be five books in this series. I cannot wait for Damsel Under Stress coming May 1, 2007. Read the first two now so you can be ready for "Damsel"!

Customer Reviews:
Not for people who already know where they want to go.......2007-04-05
I am passionate about my career and very interested in the particular challenges faced by women in a male-dominated workplace. I did not find what I needed here -- the book is rather aimless and unnecessarily chatty, rather than providing the kind of focus that I expected from a book with such a direct title! Lewis's best advice is to be happy where you are and "find joy" while "waiting for that promotion".
I don't have time to wait for a promotion! If I have a job in my sites, I'm not going to let a day go by just waiting and appreciating where I am. If I was willing to do that, I wouldn't have bought a book called "Climbing the Ladder . . .".
Some will find Lewis's religious sentiments comforting and inspiring, but I found that it gave the wrong tone to the book. She is outspoken about her beliefs that things happen for a higher purpose and everything is planned out for us. Her strategies deal mainly with how to bolster yourself until your big chance finally falls into your lap. If these are not your beliefs, and you need real help to get up and moving, take warning before you invest your time in this book.
As a self-help book for women who need comfort, this is a good choice. If you need practical career advice, look elsewhere. And I can't resist one small rant here. I got tired of her continual plaint: "Poor me! Stuck with this high-power career and all I ever really wanted was to be a stay-at-home mom!!"
GREAT INSPIRATION .......2007-02-22
This book is one of the best I have read about applying your other life goals to your career goals. I love the exercises that allow you to explore what you are doing and why. This helped me to evaluate my career and have plenty of amunition to show my superiors what I have done to contribute to our work. It also helped me to remedy my fears of the sacrifices my family has had to make for me being a working mother. I love this book. Anytime I get frustrated with work, there are specific chapters I go back to and get re-inspired with. I feel like the author truly understands what is like to be out there in the working world. The great thing is the book shows you how to actually apply the advice she gives you. This will be a gift I will give to every woman I mentor and every young woman in our office. It will also be the book I give my daughter as a graduation present. I loved it!
Good for a review of the basics.......2007-02-04
The glowing reviews of this book seem to come from women who are entering or re-entering the workforce, and I'm not surprised. Lewis offers a review of the basics, packaged attractively for the 21st century. Midcareer professionals are more comfortable in sneakers and flats, anyway.
Lewis begins with a premise that I recognize among my own career strategy clients: Most of us are yearning for something. Very few folks are content (although I have gotten a call from a past client: "I'm happy now: What do I do?!").
So Lewis sets about offering a much needed answer to a question most folks don't articulate: What do we do while we're waiting in the wings?
In reading the book, I recommend taking away an attitude, rather than specifics of logistics. For instance, if you're in between jobs, you do have opportunities to explore, but many job searchers need to find a place to perch, fast. They need money. And while What Color Is Your Parachute deserves to remain on the best-seller list, mid-career midlife professionals will benefit more from books like Working Identity and Second Acts.
Ultimately, she says, while on your job, use the opportunity and never stop looking. Good, basic advice. Not new but always worth repeating.
I especially liked her discussion of her own long search for a spouse and family. When invited on blind dates she learned to ask questions before agreeing to meet a new man. I find this process applies to many arenas of life, such as networking opportunities. The challenge is to go out a lot at first, without asking too many questions, and then sort out what will be truly useful.
I do have some qualms about the chapter on mentoring. Unless you're especially well-connected, these days you have to pay for mentors, especially if you're setting up an entrepreneurial venture.
As for a Personal Board of Directors, I love the idea, but question whether most people will be able to put this Board into place. In her book Tough Choices, Carly Fiorino shows us how a bad board can be destructive; unless you can recruit strong, selfless board members, you might be better off hiring your own consultants and coaches.
On Lewis's Board, her web site committee includes a designer and a woman who's "between jobs" who appears to be a strategist. Are these folks donating their time? Seems a bit much to ask, if they are. I can't help nothing a key website committee omission: a copywriter!
Finally, the image of climbing the ladder in stilettos will appeal to certain types of women, perhaps a clever way of identifying and reaching the book's target market. These days I see more and more women wearing tasteful flats to work. I defy convention by attending networking events in a nice pants outfit with my white sneakers. I can't walk across the room in Manohlo Blahniks. And while I admire the homage to shoes in Sex and the City, that image (and the show) are *so* over!
Definitely A Help!.......2007-01-02

Strategies that do not use unethical practices or ways that one day may come back and cause more harm than they ever did good. She breaks down her information into ten primary points that seem to be every working women's nightmare. Product Description
Climbing Mountains in Stilettos is your rulebook for throwing prim, proper and powerless out the window and letting your inner bad girl take the world by storm. It's a trail guide to a new you for women who are sick and tired of the worn out paths tread by good gilrs in flats and want to live by their own rules. What is a Bad Girl exactly? Well, she's not what the movie titles and song lyrics say she is. You know what we're talking about, don't you? Bad girls in movies and songs are prostitutes. And we sure as hell aren't going to teach you how to be prostitutes. We'd like to take this phrase and put a positive spin on it. After all, bad boys conjures up a positive image for most of us. It doesn't refer to gigolos; it refers to guys who are fun, adventurous, and usually devilishly handsome. Sure, these boys might get into a little trouble but it's usually not illegal. We all love a bad boy, don't we? With inspiration from the baddest bad girls past and present and great advice from women who've been there, Climbing Mountains in Stilettos will help you banish your fear of heights, get in touch with your better and badder side and conquer life's trails in your favorite pair of heels-practical or not.

PopFem.......2007-07-09
I wonder why the Carrie Bradshaws of today think that they are the only ones who can wear stilettos and push-up bras and still be(gulp)feminists?
One of the most powerful presences and dynamic, radical voices of the sisterhood-is-powerful 70's was a black woman who wore minidresses and purple platform shoes and false eyelashes and long, painted nails while women were being exhorted to trash the femme dressing and assume overalls and Converse All-Stars...for "comfort" and to proclaim that getting men sexually aroused was not first on your to-do list.
I suppose that it's because no-one is interested in reading history, or giving any importance to it, if they read it at all.
After all, it's OLD, and anything OLD is automatically consigned to the dumpster...unless you can sell it. In which case it becomes OLD SCHOOL and is thereafter positioned properly.
The Power of Balance.......2007-06-29
Once upon a time, stilettos were thought to make women vulnerable because you can't run in them. True enough, if you suppose a woman who can't run is vulnerable.
Nowadays, stilettos could proclaim a commitment to stand and fight--a little black belt to accessorize that little black dress, perhaps, or a little something in the handbag of sterner stuff that kleenex.
Less dramatically, stilettos make a statement about the toughness of women: "I'm willing to walk around in pain for a look." (Sub-text: compared to child-birth, these babies are kid stuff)
Mostly, women who wear stilettos do it to feel sexy. And sex, of course, is power. Forbidden power. Good girls aren't supposed to wield it. To which the authors might reply: "What's so good about being a good girl?"
By "good girl" they mean the you that wants to conform to the dictates about gender roles and looks and what a nice girl can or cannot, should or should not do. "Nonsense," they say, "You can do it in stilettos." The stiletto is their metaphor for liberating your bad girl and rediscovering poise, purpose and the unity of femininity and power. Bad girls can climb mountains in stilettos.
Being bad does not mean sleeping your way to the top or robbing banks (well, maybe a little piracy), but rejecting the pseudo-morality of both the gingham kitchen and the sensible shoe.
Maybe you genuinely like comfortable shoes, and maybe you like puttering around your kitchen creating brilliant food. Then damn the symbols! Full speed ahead. If you're doing what you want because you want, you may already be a bad girl and you don't need this book, but there's a good chance you know someone who does.
The light and sassy style is a good choice because letting go of who you were told to be and discovering who you are can be scary. At times it is laugh-out-loud funny, more often just smile-out-loud funny, and on occasion, when discussing the damage done by conformity, not a bit funny.
The fem fatale on the cover is fatally anorexic, contra the book's message that women should reject society's insane standards of beauty and love their natural bodies. Contemplating the incredible shrinking woman, the authors work themselves into a wonderful tirade:
"Fashion and most women's magazines convey the message that anything above a size six is too large. Four is the new six. Two is the new four, and zero is really the ideal. It's good to have juicy lips, inflated breasts and a perky [posterior], but the rest of you should look like a heroin addict."
(Yes, that's right, Amazon's auto-redactor elided the punchier synonym the authors use--not the a-word, the b-word)
Maybe the cover girl is a recovering good girl, a little abashed, meditating on the sin of pasta.
The authors could emphasize more that what they are urging is not immorality, but true morality, which cannot be achieved until one rejects its conventional substitute. It is that Huck Finn moment when you decide that, whatever society or the pulpit may threaten, before you betray a friend, a confidence, an ideal or--worst of all--yourself, you will go to hell. In stilettos.
With which understanding, I recommend this book to good girls, half-good girls and bad girls tempted to backslide everywhere.
From my 80-something mom.......2007-06-28
I enjoyed it so much. I loved the stories of individual women and the quotes from people like Dorothy Parker and May West. It was funny and entertaining, and full of insights for young women. It brought home to me all the changes in society particularly regarding women's rights. I was born just about six years after the constitutional amendment for the right to vote for women, and I remember my father and mother telling me about seeing the suffragettes marching in New York City. At that time that was such a huge step in advancement of women's rights.--Patsy Kopper
High-altitude attitude.......2007-06-20
Climbing Mountains in Stilettos is a hoot! I know it's targeted to 20- and 30-something women, but even a 40-something 1970s-era feminist like me discovered truth and hilarity--and I learned some new, interesting facts about sassy women throughout history.
The book's quizzes are fun, and they really illustrate how you rank on the "bad girl" scale. By the way, if you're thinking that the kind of bad girl the authors are writing about are lost, self-destructive women such as Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan, think again. This book encourages strong women--the kind who take care of themselves and navigate by their own compass to chart a course through a healthy, exhilarating, fulfilled life.
You won't ever catch me wearing stilettos--oh my poor feet!--but the book inspires me to strap on some stiletto attitude (self-assured and sexy)!
The book is fun, and its message about female empowerment is perfect for women of any age!
Be inspired out of your comfort zone.......2007-06-13
Remember the fearless girl you used to be or wanted to be--the one who always got what she went for? Climbing Mountains in Stilettos gives you a hands-on plan to get it in all areas of your life, and sprinkles in stories about women who found their passions and knew there was nothing impolite about being true to yourself. It's a fun, sassy book that totally inspired me out of my old comfort zone. Try it. You'll love it.
Book Description
Stiletto spells sex. Nothing else creates an erotically taut, arched foot or an overall come-hither silhouette quite like the stiletto heel. This exquisite book uncovers the compelling lure of the needle heel.
A highly charged symbol, the stiletto suggests a multitude of contradictions - it can be elegant, vulgar, submissive, aggressive, subversive, conventional. The stiletto is phallic but supremely female, it makes the wearer at once vulnerable and in control. Six decades have seen the stiletto in vogue around the world with an ever-changing, kaleidoscopic clientele of classic ladies, Hollywood stars, fetishists, punks, princesses, power- dressers, cross-dressers, A-list celebrities, and the girl next door. For the first time, Stiletto attempts to uncover the compelling lure of the needle heel.
Caroline Cox presents the various incarnations of the stiletto since its invention as a fantasy shoe brought to life by the flair and skill of shoemakers Vivier, Perugia, Ferragamo, and Jourdan in the early 1950s. Assertively modern, stilettos released women from the utilitarian wartime fashion of the 1940s, offering streamlined sophistication and glamour to women the world over. As the decade progressed the heel became saucier and higher, worn by starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. By the end of the 1950s the heel was being worn by bad girls and had become a weapon of female power. The 1970s took the stiletto's associations with sex and death and turned it into a fetish object, eulogized by artists Allen Jones and Eric Stanton. 1980s power dressers brought the stiletto back into the fashion arena, and today heels designed by Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and Gina are the badge of celebrity status and fashion savvy.
This exciting new book by an international fashion authority presents the story of the stiletto for the first time, illustrated with new and vintage photography to explore the stiletto's long relationship with sex, power femininity, fashion, and fetishism.

Fabulous, Fantastic High Heels .......2007-06-27
For anyone interested in sexual iconography or the history of fashion this book is a must-have for the library. Stiletto high-heeled shoes, much maligned and disdained by afficionados of banality and practicality and anxious medicos who specialize in feet, have outlived and survived all critical attacks meant to make them go away and have a continuing allure despite the fact that it takes practice and balance and mindfulness to walk gracefully in a pair of these lovely, sculptured shoes which are the sexiest footwear ever created. There is even a series of exercises designed for actresses and models to strengthen the feet and legs to make wearing stilleto heels more comfortable and, hence, more fun. And this fine book by Carolyn Cox explains what all the fuss and bother is about and why anyone in her right mind would want to wear a pair of stiletto heels. The large format allows for excellent photographic coverage as well as historic images from the 1950's and 1960's when stilleto high heels, first fashioned in embryonic form by Roger Vivier for Christian Dior, and then further elaborated into the thin, elegant spike we know today, came into their own as a staple of high fashion as enduring as Chanel's "Little Black Dress" which, like a pair of stiletto heels matched with a business suit or an evening dress or a blouse and skirt -- especially a pencil skirt -- is never not elegant. Stiletto heels are pre-eminently feminine and, once you've learned how to walk in them, pre-eminently exciting to wear. Their distinctive click-click on a hardwood or linoleum floor is music to a fashionista's ears. They elongate the legs like no other shoe on Earth, raise the wearer above her customary level of vision and, when worn by someone who truly loves them and is at home in them, radiate a sense of majesty and self-possession and power and sexual self-awareness and just a hint of danger which is elegant, crisp, business-like, decisive, distinctively powerful and the very opposite of obscene or tawdry or clownish or dull or wishy-washy. This is the best book I know of for the reader who wants to immerse herself (or himself) in the history, development, cultural and psychological significance, construction techniques and aesthetic principles of stiletto heels. Once you've read it you'll understand why this shoe design, which seems at first so counter-intuitive as something to walk in, has such a lasting appeal for millions of women world-wide. And you may also come to realize that a well-made pair of stiletto heels is a thing of beauty in itself, formal and geometrically pure in linear design, softly curved and bitingly sharp at the same time, still but poised by shape alone for motion, a delight for the sense of sight, which they can easily saturate. Perhaps the final reason for the lasting appeal and enduring love of stiletto high heels is the reason given by John Keats: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."
Stilettos, Power of Feminity.......2007-06-24
I loved this, there was alot of great history and sayings associated with the Stiletto. Stiletto's are the ultimate in Feminity and this books shows it. Gorgious color plates, tons of great tidbits of facts, lovely photography. Perfect for the Stiletto Enthusiast. [...]. Stiletto's are the power of Feminity and dates back to a long rich history of the Shoe.
One step beyond.......2004-12-10
This is a beautiful, smart, and fun book. I have never been a shoe fanatic and was at first skeptical when I received this book as a present, but I was pleasantly surprised as soon as I opened the cover. I loved all the history, whimsy, and gorgeous illustrations found in this book. This is a great one to give as a gift and will add a stylish touch to every library. Anyone with even the slightest interest in fashion, cultural history, or designer footwear will go crazy for STILETTO.
intelligent, forward thinking and well researched.......2004-12-05
This book is an intelligent historical analysis of the stiletto heel, one of the best of its kind. Its insight into cultural history and psychology is profound. The mass of pictures and illustrations work perfectly with the text. It is ideal for students of fashion and cultural history plus anyone interested in making statements with their clothes.
SHOCKED!.......2004-12-02
When I purchased this book I thought I would get more information on the history of the heel, such as the sumtuary laws that only allowed royalty and other aristocrats to wear heels. This is were the term "well Heeled" comes from. Instead I found a book full of pornography.
Here we are in the twenty first century and women are still viewed the same was as they did centuries ago. It seems that when I do research on anything pretaining to women what I get is porno. This is an insult to someone who has mothers, sisters, and aunts. I returned this book because I have a daughter and I don't want her finding this book and wondering why I would have something like this in my library.

THIS WAS ALRIGHT. THE GRAMMER WASN'T SO GOOD, SO IT KIND OF MADE THE BOOK NOT WORTH READING. I'M WONDERING IF THIS WAS THE SUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. MODESTY IS YOUR TYPICAL YOUNG GIRL, WANTING NOTHING OUT OF LIFE, BUT THE THUGGEST DUDE WITH THE MOST MONEY. SHE GETS A FEW, AS WELL AS HATERS AND INTO A COUPLE OF FIGHTS, ALL BECAUSE SHE IS WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S MAN, BUT SHE DOESN'T STARTS THE FIGHTS.
EVENTUALLY SHE GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL, APPLY'S TO COLLEGE AND FROM THEN ON SHE GOES THTROUGH MORE DRAMA, MORE FIGHTS AND BETRYAL OF FRIENDSHIPS, ALL THIS WHILE STOMPING IN HER STILETTO'S.
I WOULDN'T BUY THIS BOOK, JUST BORROW IT.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - A Survivor .......2006-06-02
Affectionately known as Motley, Modesty Blair was raised by her father and paternal grandmother after her mother relocated to Milwaukee from Chicago, leaving her behind. She was raised in the hood and has had her share of fights. Women envy her and men want her, but Modesty has an agenda all her own. She dreams of making something of herself despite where she comes from. She dresses in designer clothes, always has her hair and nails done, and wears a nice pair of stilettos. She describes herself as addicted to retail and to feed her addiction she shoplifts or boosts as she calls it, and is never without the best of everything.
During her teen years in an effort to start life anew, she relocates to Milwaukee where her mother lives but isn't there long before she is back in the same situations: stealing and fighting. In spite of her looks she has a hard time finding a love interest that wants to get to know her for who she is. She is involved in an on again off again romance with a guy who continuously treats her bad. In addition to being mistreated in a relationship she is also backstabbed and talked about amongst those she calls "friends". Modesty is fed up and is determined to get her life together.
She decides to apply to college and to her surprise is accepted. Although in college, old habits die hard and she is still doing a bit of hustling. She still hasn't quite got her life on track. Modesty begins hanging with a crowd totally different from the usual people she hangs with. These are girls who have goals and dreams, they know what they want out of life and they go after it. They don't partake in any stealing or any of the things Modesty is accustomed to. Can these friends be the determining factor in Modesty getting her life on track? Or will the streets call her name so strongly that she has to answer?
STILETTO 101 is a fast-paced, coming of age story that grabs the reader from the first page. The characters were well-developed and the writing has a nice flow. What I enjoyed most was I felt like I knew Modesty and when she would repeatedly make the same mistakes, I got mad and wanted tell her to straighten up and fly right. I also enjoyed the fact that the storyline was a real one. So often people become a victim of circumstance but have no desire to turn things around. Modesty was a woman on the move, who sought change and put forth the effort no matter how difficult it was.

I bought the book from the author at a homeless food drive on Thanksgiving in Houston,Tx. Rap-a-Lot ceo J-Prince feed the homeless and Ms. Stiletto was a volunteer and also promoting.

Stilleto 101 was a very interesting book! I finished it in a day and a half, a definite page turner. All though at certain points I couldnt really relate to Modesty, I felt she had a great story to tell. I felt like someone was sitting in front of me and telling me the story of there lives! The story captivates you, keeps you tied to each page full of drama after drama. I can say this book is a must read!

a book for every woman who needs a pick up.........2007-03-17
While I wouldn't recommend sitting down and reading "Shout from the rooftops in your stilettos," I would recommend that every woman out there own a copy of the book to get them through their darker days and more trying times in life.
One could probably sit and read the book straight through from start to finish, (as I did,) but you will probably find your mind wandering elsewhere. What is this book about you ask? It's sort of like a pep talk for women. The book encourages you to focus on YOURSELF and your own happiness, and comes complete with various exercises to help you do so. The book will help to refocus your mind and spirit and get you back on track to a happy healthy lifestyle. It will help you remember the GOOD things about yourself, when you're starting to feel doubt. It's like having your own private cheerleader. It's full of positivity and joy and I give many kudos to Julie Hunt, the book's author for taking the time to create this book.
Book Description
The story of this steamy novel centers on an amoral young Italian aristocrat with a penchant for violence who owes his extravagant lifestyle to the favors of a mafia overlord. So when he is asked to silence four witnesses due to testify against the mob, the aristocrat is more than happy to comply in a most brutal manner. Only he did not figure on a special agent--one who helped build the mountain of evidence against the organization--entering into a lethal game of cat-and-mouse with him. And the special agent is the only one who realizes that it is not loyalty, or honor, or debt that drive the young man to murder--but the thrill of the kill!

Stiletto.......2006-10-06
Cesare Cardinale is a rich businessman and race driver who also works as a hitman for the Mafia, because he enjoys killing. But after killing four would-be-witnesses, the Mafia bosses are afraid he might talk, so they want him dead.
The plot is a standard hitman story without any surprises. The focus is more on Cesare's romantic affairs than on the actual Mafia/hitman story. The book also spends quite long parts on background stories on the two female characters. "Stiletto" is a quick read, but not very interesting.
Incredible!!!.......2000-08-11
This book really awesome. All of his books are good, but this one is my favorite. The suspense is really pretty....well, suspenseful!! ;-D
