Book Description
Whether it's a city park, a suburban backyard, a farmer's field, or the sandy seashore, there's a treasure trove of natural art materials out there. Twigs, vines, pinecones, flowers, leaves, rocks, shells, moss, feathers - they're all gifts of the earth. Add just a few inexpensive store-bought items, such as glue, string, and wire, and anyone can create beautiful, natural works of art.
In NATURE'S ART BOX, writer, gardener, and nature-crafter Laura C. Martin offers 65 cool projects kids will love to make, using materials they can find just about anywhere. She explains how to make paints and inks from flowers and other plants; how to use shells, moss, seedpods, and cones to embellish large objects; how to build elf-sized furniture; how to decorate picture frames, birdhouses, and keepsake boxes with woodland treasures; and how to dig clay, weave vines, and make natural dyes to color T-shirts.
While Martin teaches kids to see the possibilities of the natural world, she also teaches them to respect what the earth offers. She warns them against stripping bark off live trees, plucking every flower in the field, and clearing the ground of every nut and seed. NATURE'S ART BOX helps kids learn to be good artists and conscientious stewards of nature's resources.

Great kids nature craft book!.......2007-09-10
First of all, you have to remember that this is a KIDS craft book. :-) My two boys have both really enjoyed doing crafts out of this book. They are 12 and 8 yrs. A lot more in depth than other nature craft books I have seen for kids.
Wonderful Nature Crafts - Great projects.......2006-02-19
Here in the Northeast US, we're still gripped by the icy fingers of winter. Hopefully, spring will come soon. Meanwhile, I'll while away the gray days with Nature's Art Box, a sturdy and well-written hardcover book with 65 nature crafts projects for kids. This book is appropriate for parents, teachers, home-schoolers and group leaders. It's a nature crafts course for educators in a cosy, attractive book. The book is divided into several sections based on different types of natural materials:
* Vines, Twigs, Cones, and Moss
* Gourds, Pods, Husks, and Seeds
* Clay Stones, Sand, and Shells
* Paints, Inks, and Dyes
* Flowers and Leaves
* Stamps, Stencils, Molds and Seals
The introduction and appendix are full of helpful information on gathering materials and other crafts supplies to create the projects. The projects vary in complexity - some are very simple, and others require adult supervision. Safety tips and instructions are plentiful.
Here's a sampling of the 65+ projects included:
* Bark and Moss House
* Angel Ornament
* Okra Pod Canoe and People
* Sand Painting
* Shell Buttons
* Homemade Natural Paint
* Fern Print
* Dried-Flower Fairy
* Leaf Rubbing Gift Wrap
Right next to this book on a shelf, I picked up a nature crafts book that was lovely to look at, with elegant design and great photography. But the projects were scanty and simplistic. This book is the antidote - it is full of information, projects and ideas. You will turn to it year after year, season after season. Highly recommended.
don't buy.......2005-11-03
I love creative ideas especially when the materials used are abundant and easy to find, unfortunately there is more creativity in the illustrations of this book than the ideas for crafts (I give it one star for this reason alone). This book proves that ANYONE can publish a book. Don't waste your money on this.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas!.......2002-09-24
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!
A picture book.......2000-04-16
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye) and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they are doing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tell you to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned, what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show only one picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of how to position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more in depth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawing board for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go to many web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection of pictures. Very disapointed in this one......
Book Description
This 400-page book features hundreds of colorful examples of the T-shirt at its legendary best, from its humble origins as an undergarment to its current star status as a classic piece of clothing worn by billions around the world. Originally designed as a piece of men's underwear, the T-shirt exploded in the 1960s and has since taken on a whole new meaning. The T-shirt shed its undergarment role and became the perfect forum for political and creative expression. The Tees have been worn by everyone - men and women, old and young - and through the silkscreen process have become an international, unisex medium for every possible type of message. From the brooding image of Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire to the revolutionary call of Che Guevara, this book chronicles the myriad uses and images of the T-shirt. With playful photographs and engaging text, The T-Shirt Book mirrors our social history as it traces the evolution of the shirt from 1960s tie-dye to Madonna mania, and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
You'll use it one or twice - maybe.......2006-11-22
Very disapointing book, very little in the way of in depth design research. More of a novelty item, coffee table book than a useful referance guide. Like so many design books, a great concept that does not deliver.
Book Description
"This beautifully illustrated book includes instructions for painting, stamping, tie-dying, batik, marbling, and screen-painting T-shirts. Over 70 unique T-shirts illustrated in full color....Offers a wide variety of appealing design possibilities....This sumptuous book would be fun to read and look at even for the novice...[a] treasure trove."--Kliatt. 112 pages (all in color), 8 x 9.

Fun book!.......2005-09-27
If you have a bored teenager on your hands, this is the book to get. Some supplies from the craft store, and you're ready to unleash your creativity and wear it to school...
Nice books for ideas.......2000-12-01
This a nice simple book on how to start decorating your T-shirts. The instructions are simple but I would have had the sample pictures near the instructions instead of at the end. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it for beginners, it inspires you to give is a go.
Big on Ideas! Basic Techniques........1999-08-03
Interested in designing your own T-shirts but can't decide between techniques? This is a fun book --providing basic techniques for tie-dye, marbling, batik, stamping, and more. The illustrations are wonderful and inspiring. The instructions are really simple. Within days of purchasing this book I was dyeing and painting a handful of hand-me-down baby clothes. Serious fun!

The largest category is tee shirts.If you don't know how to sew or don't have the equipment, it shows you where to get the supplies and how to sew step by step.The age range for this book shoould be 8-15.

UGH!.......2007-07-16
i didnt not at all like this book! i felt that this girl is WAY TOO spoiled and it made me mad how if she didnt get her way she would turn into the PRISSY girl who was "too good" for work. Her attitude wasnt exactly the greatest. All she wanted was her lucky t. and if she didnt get it she would cry. She acted like she was better than everyone. and i just didnt like it. UGH!

Have you ever cleaned your room/closet and decided to donate your excess clothes to charity? Maybe it was a mother-ordered mandate to get rid of the clutter? Whatever the reason or inspiration, did you ever give away something you didn't really mean to give? What would you do to get it back?
Carrie's mother does just that. She gives Carrie's favorite T-shirt to the Help India foundation. Unfortunately, the T-shirt is not just a T-shirt. It was given to Carrie by her father, and she superstitiously believes it is the reason for every success in her young life. She must get it back.
Since the T-shirt is traveling to India, Carrie makes arrangements to travel there, too. Carrie arrives at the Help India headquarters to find herself bunking with several roommates in a hostel. The roommates are horrible, and India is nothing like she expected. She is assigned to the group building homes in Calcutta. Needless to say, Carrie seriously lacks building trade skills. From dropping a hammer on her flip-flop-exposed big toe to dropping a boxful of nails in wet concrete, Carrie is not very popular at the building site.
Much to her relief, Carrie meets Dee, who tells her about his work at the Calcutta Children's Shelter. When she's offered a chance to start volunteering there, she decides anything is better than her current situation. Her work with children is the beginning of a new understanding for Carrie. Maybe the T-shirt isn't that important after all.
When I started LUCKY T, I was frustrated with the whining of main character Carrie. As the storyline began to unfold, though, it gained depth and purpose, and everything fell into place. Kate Brian gives readers a chance to watch the growth of Carrie and what her experience teaches her about exactly what things/people are important in life.

Fun Teen romance and glimpse into another culture.......2007-02-23
Very entertaining and fun romance appropriate for teens. Quick paced after an initial slow start. Once you get past the first 25 pages, the rest of the book is fantastic. I love the glimpses into India and how the heroine grows as a person when she looks outside of her normal comfortable life. Dee is a dream: handsome, nice, and smart. I wish there was more about Dee, would have liked more development of their relationship. The author is a great writer, she really knows how to take you to another place. I would read more of her books.
All About Luck.......2006-11-12
Carrie Fitzergald has been spoiled with luck all her life due to a lucky T-shirt her dad once gave her from a business trip. Now that T-shirt is gone, lost somewhere in India, after her mother accidentally gave it away as part of a charity donation. And Carrie's luck has gone with it: she's broken up with her boyfriend, had a fight with her bestfriend, and has gotten her first bad grade. So what will Carrie do? Travel to India to retreive her lucky T!
This is a cool, perky novel for every girl to try! Read the book to find out what happens to Carrie in India!

Give the unexpected a chance
That's the advice Chloë gets from her stepfather before she heads off to Florida to spend the summer with her aunt Bernadette. It turns out to be excellent advice, because everything about Bernadette is unexpected: her job driving a food service wagon, her big, slobbery dog, her Rollerblading skill, her unorthodox way of teaching Chloë to swim. But nothing is as unexpected as the war that erupts when the other drivers start wearing T-back swimsuits to work, and some community leaders mount a protest against the skimpy suits. Bernadette is caught in the middle of the controversy...and what starts as an innocent game for Chloë may just make things worse.
Customer Reviews:
Moral Controversy.......2007-06-10
Chloe is desperately looking for a way to get away from her friends and the pressure of fitting in for the summer. She asks her mother and stepfather what to do, and her stepfather decides that she should spend the summer in Florida with his older sister, Bernadette. Chloe isn't thrilled about the idea, but it seems as though it is her only choice. She boards a plane and sets off from New Jersey to live with her aunt for a few weeks.
Bernadette is a very strange woman, but Chloe promised her stepfather she would give the woman a chance, so she does. Soon she is used to the routine--getting up early every morning to help Bernadette load up and then sell food from a lunch wagon, then off to the beach where Bernadette is teaching her to swim before dinner in the evenings. Things seem to be going really well.
Then two of the women who drive lunch wagons start wearing t-back bathing suits--thongs--to work. Suddenly they are getting all of the business and Bernadette doesn't have as many customers anymore. Soon everyone except Bernadette is wearing a t-back to work, and their story is getting coverage on the news. A local religious group is doing its best to stop what they see as a moral crisis. Bernadette is refusing to get involved on either side. She won't wear a t-back but she also won't sign a petition against them. As things heat up in town, though, it's beginning to look like Bernadette may be forced to choose a side.
I liked Bernadette's character and how she didn't change her life or herself to accommodate Chloe. I also liked seeing how the escalation of the t-back war changed things in town. I thought Tyler's character was really annoying and I couldn't figure out why Chloe would even go to the trouble of harassing him when she should have just stayed out of his way.
NOT TOO HIPPY.......2007-02-13
people may say this book is too "hippy" but i think it is a fun and enjoyable book about basicly not judging a book by it's cover. Yes i confess that i chose this book because of it's cover but i am glad i did. it jumps right in to the plot of the story and never drags on.
Cloe's stepfather sends her to FL to visit his sister. Cloe thinks that this will be boring. Cloe has always had to compete with the in and outs of styles if it is fashion or boys you have to know when to like it or hate it. She soon finds out that in some cases you need to not care if your hair is frizzy or if you are sweating like a pig but as long as you are enjoying being with the people you are with. READ THIS BOOK PLEASE!!!!
Interesting.......2006-04-09
Hippies, witches and religious fundamentalists - E.L. Konigsburg brings them all together in T-Backs, T-Shirts, Coat and Suit. Twelve-year-old Chlo? does not like conformity. In order to escape the peer pressure of trying to be just like her friends, she wants to go away from her New Jersey home for the summer. She agrees with her adoptive father to go stay with his sister Bernadette in Florida and help her out when she needs it.
Bernadette is much different than people Chlo? is used to and does things in her own way. She works selling food from a van and is successful. However, that changes when other sellers begin wearing t-backs (thongs) and take away her business. Bernadette refuses to follow along, but refuses to disclose why.
Controversy erupts, as the religious fundamentalists from the Church of the Endless Horizon protest the lack of morality. They try to enlist Bernadette, but she refuses.
Meanwhile, Chlo? meets the thirteen-year-old Tyler, who is very sure of himself. In order to get the better of him, she manages to convince him that Bernadette is a witch, which later leads to disaster.
Throughout the book, characters talk about history in short anecdotes that give some of the reasons for what they did. Some of the anecdotes were from the characters' lives (this is where the hippies come in). Like some of Konigsburg's other stories, the lives of the characters are connected together in a variety of ways. Other stories included famous historical figures like Galileo, enabling the reader to learn something. All of this information shows how the past affects the present.
In this book, Konigsburg crafted another compelling story. The characters are strong and stand up for themselves, and provide good role models for standing up to peer pressure. In conclusion, the book is amusing and should appeal to a variety of readers.
Great book!.......2005-07-31
I love and admire Bernadette, Chloë's aunt. She is really brave and great. I wanna be a handsome woman like Bernadette.
I love this book........2005-04-20
I loved it. I will treasure this book forever!
I really know what Chloe thinks, feels, and realizes.
