Book Description
From aesthetic subtleties to the slapstick, the heart and soul of manga lies in unique character representation through physiques and expressions. Tadashi Ozawa, the author of the best-selling How to Draw Anime & Game Characters series kicks off instruction with the basics and intricacies of properly proportioned and stylistically deformed characters. Ozawa then focuses on the creation of an entire range of facial expressions, from a slightly lifted eyebrow of doubt to a river of tears, exploring both the nuance and comedy exclusive to manga.

Eh....It's Okay.......2007-08-28
When I bought this book I was expecting to see an explanation on how to create different emotions and body frames. Well...not exactly. The emotion information they shared wasn't really helpful. Just showed a bunch of odd faces.
As for the body. It had many different poses to put a "female" character in that I have to admit were really cute. But it would've been nice to get a detailed explanation how to get all the different positions. They didn't have any on males, but they did draw out the different sizes of a male's body. Not really helpful.
Then they gave a little info on the hands and feet and the other pasrts of the body and yeah. That was pretty much it. They did have a few pictures of different kind of men and women in the back. But it really wasn't helpful.
But hey, if you're wondering about doing different poses for your character. This is the book for you. They have different pages of positions for miles.
A good and bad body start!!!.......2006-10-16
This book is pretty good, except it as a huge part on girls but barely anything about boys. Don't get me wrong the girl part shows a lot of different poses and there really good. Its just if your looking only for boys you shouldnt by this book.
Liked it, Loved it!.......2006-08-20
I really liked this book a lot, the majority of this book is how to draw TONS of different poses! i didn't even think about drawing some poses that i do in everyday life. And she shows the difference between the anatomy of a human body, and the manga body! which i thought was a total plus! One of the only things i was dissapointed with was the facial expressions, it didn't show how to draw them at all, and thats what i really struggle with! It's a great book for learning all about different poses, anatomy and posture, but not a great book for expressions.
This is *not* a collection of facial expressions.......2006-01-31
This was my first purchase outside of the official How To Draw Manga collection, and I chose this book because of the promise of emotions and facial expressions. But despite the official description and even the text on the book cover, this book did not live up to that implied promise.
This book focuses heavily on how to draw bodies, and the advice it gives is sound and helpful. The tone of the text is occasionally arrogant but generally constructive. But almost all of the "emotion" shown in the book is through body language and posture; indeed, half the drawings don't have faces at all.
If you're looking for simple anatomy lessons or an assortment of poses, this book could be helpful. But if you're looking for a reference for facial expressions, this is not suitable; you would find more facial expressions by picking a random book from the How To Draw Manga series.
Book Description
This unique drawing tutorial gives artists and in-depth look at the styles that make the Japanese urban and hip hop trend the dominant culture it is today. It takes artists through some of the distinctive urban environments, city living conditions, and youth entertainment that are essential elements in drawing urban-hip hop manga. To give artists a sample of what a finalized urban and hip hop youth manga would look like, this book offers a rough layout of urban manga staged in cosmopolitan Ikebukuro.

Excellent Artistic Reference.......2005-02-09
Wanna draw super-baggy hip-hop clothes? Jewelry with style and characters wearing something other than sailor suits and school uniforms? Look no further. Tokyo Urban-hip Hop Culture is the artistic reference for you. The Authors go into depth describing the various looks popular in Japanese Hip-hop culture today. While this book describes fashions popular in Japan today, these costumes will be easily recognizable as popular in American amongst urban youth.
The best part is you do not need to be a fan of Manga to find this artistic reference book useful. In particular the discussion of clothing, jewelry and the way fabric folds is quite useful to the artist.
An excellent book for comic artists everywhere.

MUST BUY FOR YAOI FANS!! .......2007-08-07
THIS IS A VERY VERY USEFUL BOOK!! i like it sense it gives the adult and young boy body types, something that was lacking in How To's Male Character book. Yamada-sama's art style is beautiful and she gives great references. Even Helpful references for Kissing and Hugging. I Bought it with the How to Couples book but i am using this one a lot more! It's a great reference boy how to draw guys if you don't mind the kissing. It doesn't go into the finer details of lovemaking like How To's couple does. I am wondering whether i should bother buying How To's Yaoi guide now.
Helpful book.......2007-07-16
I got this for a friend who is trying to learn how to write mangas. It has been helpful to her.
DISAPPOINTING.......2007-07-03
I wanted to get :How To Draw Manga Volume 42: Drawing Yaoi (How to Draw Manga) but got this by mistake.
Nothing here unique to yaoi; instead we get sections on how to draw male anatomy and male clothing, a teeny section on how to kiss, guy hairstyles, how to make a comic story, etc.- stuff that's been covered by other, better books. Instead in this book we have a) no sex scenes b) no comics/manga c) no mention of the history or styles of yaoi. It's a collection of drawings of guy characters cuddling up to each other. If the artists's art style doesn't appeal to you, don't buy this book, because there's nothing else worth looking at.

Let's Draw Manga : N .......2005-02-22
the book does a good job of providing information about the subject matter (whether it's the section on ninja weapons that mentions 'caltrops' were originally the dried fruit of the caltrop plant or including information that the mesh shirts you are directed to draw on your ninja were made of woven metal)
I did enjoy the multiple poses and explaination of the clothing and style of the samurai and ninja, though I found the artwork to be slightly out of proportion (the book goes into detail on creating female ninja, and recommends if you want a more sexy ninja to make her a bit more curvy and exaggerate certain elements) but the distortion I refer to is in some of the artwork not related to ninja busts, the artwork is either in proportion or not. I was happy to have found this book, I felt there should have been more work with the clothing and how it appears in different positions, and even a basic breakdown of sword strikes and positions would have been helpfull. A good book overall, as an instructional book and source of information on clothing, weapon, and hair styles reference this book is pretty good.
Let's Draw Manga - Ninja & Samurai is one of the best!.......2004-11-24
When I received my copy of Let's Draw Manga - Ninja & Samurai, I was impressed with the broad scope of illustrations covering Ninja & Samurai poses, clothing, and weapons. The book is a great source of information on drawing in the manga style and gives its readers a good sense of how to draw the details of ninja and samurai, and it helped me to draw my own samurai character that I am quite pleased with.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to draw in this style!

Most characters in the book are modeled after hit anime shows and manga that are well-known in North American and Europe. It's a dream come true for aspiring "shoujo" manga artists.
Customer Reviews:
Great for intermetiate drawers!.......2005-12-21
This book is perfect if you already have some experience. I use this book to get ideas and poses and different hair ideas. If you are just a begginer who wants to learn how to draw manga, I would recomend Katie Coope, How to draw manga. It shows more basic proportions. Then practice on your own for a bit to get the hang of it. When you already know how to draw manga this book will come in handy. Also the "how to draw manga" series are a good intermediate to expert book.
Nice art , Nudity free, and Kawaii!.......2005-11-23
This book is really inspirining the art is great and the steps are fun! This book starts off by teaching you how to draw charaters from popular shoujos step by step so you can get the feeling of what drawing manga is like. Then it teaches you how to draw and create your own charaters ( hair, cloths, assesories ect.).Last it teaches you how to make backrounds, inking, the do's and the don'ts of manga, and how to create you own comics. Very fun and inspiring!
Over all this book deservise 4.5 stars just because it doesn't teach much about how to draw guys, so I find this book more of a how to draw manga females with out the nudity and all that stuff.Still very Kawaii and helpful. But if you buy this book buy the how to draw manga males with it.
Like Shojuo? This books for you! ^_^.......2005-11-19
This book is really great the only bad part is Akaro doesn't teach how to draw a three quarter view and some of the steps you have to practice really hard and long to get. If your a beginer I whould recamend Katie Coope's How To Draw Manga and How To Draw More Manga books or the How to draw manga seires but what I DON'T recamend at all is Kids draw, Extreme art, or Manga Mainia. This book is more of a advanced begginer so the steps are a little harder but once you master it it you art looks twice as good! In the begining of the book it shows how to draw a girl who looks like Sakura from Card captors! It also shows how to draw a bunch of charaters from fermilair shojuos too.So if you love shojou this book is for you! ^_^

This book is GREAT!.......2004-10-29
This book is wonderful! Like all the other let's draw manga books, "All About Fighting" covers everything within its topic and much more. This book has every fighting style from fistfights to virtual reality battles. My favorite part of this book is the character design part, which shows tricks to designing characters, and also shows different kinds of characters and their traits.
Some things included in this book are, costumes and uniforms involved in fighting, various poses involved in different fighting styles, a mini weapons encyclopedia, and short mangas (comics) with almost every fighting style to help interpret the use(s) of the style. Overall, "Let's Draw Manga: All About Fighting" is an excellent source of reference and inspiration.
I think this book is a must buy for artists who want to pursue a job in manga making or if you just want to learn to draw a totally awesome fight scene. It substitutes having to take lessons from a teacher (even though I highly doubt you'll find one), and when it comes to what you can to do with this book, the possibilities are practically limitless! I would recommend this book to anyone who would be willing to listen.
A Valuable Information Resource!.......2004-10-23
This is an excellent book that has a wealth of detail, drawings, and information related to various kinds of combat in manga. There are sections on unarmed combat, armed combat, uniforms and costume design (as it relates to combat), supernatural (ala DBZ) combat, monster combat, robot combat, and even animal combat!
There are a number of short 2-6 page manga that illustrate various points, and are decent examples of composition. Where this book really shines, though, is in the "Weaponless Fighting" and "Weapon Fighting" sections. There are a wide variety of techniques from various styles of fighting presented, and each section also includes a brief guide to designing characters for action manga.
The book's only shortcoming is that it rarely shows more than one or two views of a particular attack type, but given the scope of the book, that's understandable.
I highly recommend that beginning to advanced artists interested in the manga style acquire this book. For beginners it gives good information on techniques and tricks, and for advanced artists it provides a wealth of reference material.

Not Just a Drawing book but a thinking book.......2006-12-25
This books doesnt just give you a bunch of monsters to copy,it actually lays out a total creative process for creating your own unique monster concepts. This fact immediately puts it ahead of most of the 'Draw Manga' books in that it doesn't just give you a list of stylistice tips but a whole way of thinking about the subject.
Cute monsters, Sea monsters, Kaiju, you name it!.......2006-10-08
The monster types in this book basically allow you do do a lot of mixing and matching (some examples were an Elephant with a Bulldozer, a human with a hercules beetle, a squid with a shrimp a crab and a stag beetle, and a Kaiju-fied lemur-esque monster with spikes on its tail... trust me when I say that THIS one is a LOT cooler looking than I've described it). Overall, this book allows for the artist to really use their head, as well as their creativity with some of these astonishingly terrifying, and sometimes cute or cool-looking monsters (the Pet Monsters, as this book calls them).
I'd recommend it to anyone willing to think outside the typical anime norm.

Excellent Drawing Aid - Worth the Purchase.......2006-12-13
I have a collection of How to Draw Manga books, but this was my first Let's Draw Manga and I love it. Simply put: The book is extremely well done - no skimping on the art quality (what you see on the cover resembles the inside art, if not better) and excellent color graphics. It is probably for upper-level beginners and up as far as details in how to draw.
There are six chapters, each with about two subsections. The chapters are:
Let's create some characters
Let's establish our world
Enemy and Supporting characters
Magic and equipment
Let's draw fantasy manga
Author illustrations.
There are body shapes that you can photocopy (intelligent move by the authors), very detailed descriptions, CG instructions(which are great), background development and explanations, character designs and costumes, and finally a book with a good proportion of male character information (which I find hard to get out of the How to Draw Manga book series). It is almost like a compilation of the many of the How to Draw Manga books. Well worth the purchase. Useful. Great addition to collection.

Not for the young, but important for the Pros.......2004-11-01
Well, I've reviewed this book since I got it recently, and I do have to criticize it a little. Overall, the layout of the book is decent, but it unfortunately assumes the the reader is already acquainted with art in general, and manga in specific. To be precise, the author starts out strong, but dumps the reader into the artwork with little to no explanation of the female body beyond some generalizations. He does cover structure of the female body, and the rear of the book covers guidelines as well.
The artwork inside is above average, but looks hurried. In particular, some of the pieces of art look slightly out of proportion to the rest of the body. The author seems to take a point of view on drawing sexy gals from a sexual standpoint. People, this book is NOT for those under 13. And I'd have some trouble suggesting it to anyone not mature enought to realize this is an ART book, not a HOW TO DRAW SEX book.
Otherwise, this is a laudable effort. It covers odd or hard to draw poses not ususally covered in other books, and it also has a section on drawing couples. Women are drawn in an unrealistic, but commonly drawn, style. A large number of more adult manga and anime are drawn using similar style, so this is a good introduction to the genre of Ecchi or Hentai artwork. It also has application in other genres as well, so don't take it as a cheaply made book about how to make forgettable storylines or how to draw over-developed scantily-clad women.
Finally, a word of caution. As I mentioned before, this book deals with sex and sexual themes. Definitely not for minors. For anyone who is looking to expand their range of poses, brush up on new ways of drawing women (and some men), or even those simply hoping to broaden the range of their potential, this book will do nicely.
Book Description
Well-drawn black and white manga is already some of the most visually expressive fiction available today. Let's Draw Manga -- Using Color adds a powerful weapon to an aspiring manga artist's arsenal. A graduate of this book may use color to heighten the glitz and dazzle of an onstage performer in lights, capture the gloom and doom of a mad professor's castle, or heighten the tension when a cornered heroine is forced to draw a glistening weapon against a moonlit backdrop.
