Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Fewer mistakes, but several corrections needed.......2006-02-11

Another reviewer had commented on a myriad of errors in this series of board books. He did not comment on this one specifically, so I purchased it. There are several errors, which can be considered minor compared to all the errors in the "My toys, Mis jugetes" board book. Again, there seems to be a lack of quality control in checking the correctness of the Spanish words before going to print, hence my rating.

For those people who would like to teach their children correct Spanish, here are the corrections.

Front Cover & Spine: In Spanish only the first word is capitalized in a title. Therefore, the correct title for the Spanish portion is "Mi ropa". It is possible this is changing in practice because of the influence of English, but the Spanish Royal Academy guide on grammar and spelling still lists this as the rule.

Inside: Pants is "los pantalones", not "los pantal?nes". Socks is "los calcetines", not "los calcet?nes". There is no accent on either word. At least these are two corrections that only need white-out. *See the end for explanation on accentuation rules.*

Back Cover: "Colectar" in Spanish is used for the collection of money or debts. To collect, as in amass in a collection, is "coleccionar". The phrase, correcting the verb and the preposition, should be "?Coleccione todos los libros de la serie!"

Not a correction per se:
Las pyjamas: When I saw this spelling I scratched my head since I was only familiar with "las pijamas". After searching, I discovered that this is a tough word because the word in Spanish derives from the word in English. Thus, it can take various forms, either faithful to the English pronunciation with changed spelling, or faithful to the English spelling with Spanish pronunciation. If you don't want to use the Spanish phrase "la ropa de dormir" and want to use the word that comes from the English, all of the following are OK:
"las pyjamas" (derived from the British English spelling)
"las pijamas"
"las piyamas"
"las payamas" (derived from the American English spelling)
If you are a Spanish speaker, use the version you are familiar with. Or else using the spelling in this book is OK.

* Note 1: The word "pantal?n" takes an accent because it follows the rule for a word that is "aguda", having the stress on the last syllable. The "aguda" rule is that the word is accentuated on the last syllable, which is stressed, if it ends in a vowel, an s, or an n. But when an "es" is added to make the word plural ("los pantalones"), a syllable is added and the word becomes "llana" or "grave". The "llana" rule for words that have the stress on the next to last syllable is that the stressed syllable is accentuated if the word ends in a consonant other than n or s. The word "pantalones" has the stress on the next to last syllable and it ends in s. Therefore, it doesn't get an accent. The same explanation is the reason why "los calcetines" also doesn't have an accent either.

* Note 2: The Spanish Royal Academy lists "el pijama" in the singular as the proper form, though probably no one outside of Spain uses it that way.

Great teaching resource!.......2005-08-29

This is a nice sturdy book that my boys go back to right after we get dressed in the morning and repeat the words in Spanish and English (They are 2 and 3 1/2 years.)

It also is a great review and supplement to the Lessons on clothing in their Flip Flop Spanish Workbooks - they look at the pictures in this sweet little book when we listen to the Spanish CD that comes with the workbook.

A great series for early language acquisition.......2003-03-12

I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.

Well written, well argued history, not text book like at all, but like a long New Yorker article. A pleasure to read. It's not about silly petty fads but great social movements that underlie trends and revolutions. I think more photo illustrations would help.

The Best Pick-Up Line..........2000-07-10

The best pick-up line is to tell a woman how her clothes communicate aspects of her personality. Women love to talk about what the colors, patterns, and styles of their clothes mean. "The Language of Clothes" is all you need to do this -- although I also recommend "Big Hair: A Journey into the Transformation of Self," by Grant McCracken, to discuss what women's hair means. "The Language of Clothes" consists of chapters about how clothes express youth or age, a time or era, certain places, social status, etc. The best chapters are about how clothes communicate gender and sexual messages. This book is also one of the best birthday presents to give to a woman. (I shouldn't be sexist -- the book also discusses men's clothes.) The book has *lots* of clothes, and lots of photos. It's long and carefully researched. It makes you think. Women happily spend hours paging through it.

Absolutely Fascinating!.......2000-04-28

I can't wait to go out and buy this book, which I read in hardcover from the library. It is very well researched and illustrated and discusses clothes and fashions from long ago up till today. And not just fashions and how they change, but what they MEAN. For example, did you know....in olden times, not just elegant clothing, but cloth itself was and admired and expensive commodity. The more cloth making up one's clothing meant that person was wealthy. Paintings of the period featured draperies in the background to indicate a person's wealth, and even today designer clothing uses more cloth and is cut fuller, carrying on the tradition. Anyone interested in not only fashion and clothing but symbols and history should read this book, it is just fascinating and delicious.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of the Spanish or English languages. The large, bright pictures help to enhance the useage of simple, easy to understand clothing words. In the back there is even a list of all the words used in the book and pronunciations for each word, both in English and Spanish.

FANTASTIC!!.......2006-12-01

After spending a whole day at a Living History event, trying to justify spending that sort of money on a book. Which at the time was sealed and the vendor would not allow it to be opened. I finally bit the bullet and made the purchase. It is one of my all time favorite clothing books. The images are stunning, both full shots of pieces and close-ups. There are accessories, undergarments, et cetera. It includes a range of styles in the 18th century for men and women. Some children's garments. It is not all just aristocratic or high fashion, though it isn't lacking it either. But, the uberness of this book does not stop there. After I stopped devouring the pictures like a kid in a candy shop I started reading. I was impressed with the practical approach to fashion history that the author took. Instead of focusing on the outrageous and bizarre fads of fashion. The book also touches on how historians have identified, classified and labeled garments. And how they have been right or wrong in their thoeries, going on to explain the current position of opinion today with scholars in the field. The text flows with interesting facts and a keen wit and humor. There are quite a few amusing side bars, and a lot of "myth busters". I think this would be a welcome addition to any collection.

What Clothes Reveal: The Language of Clothing in Colonial & Federal America.......2006-03-22

"What Clothes Reveal" is first and foremost a history of American and British wearing apparel from the 18th and early 19th centuries found in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. It is also a social history of the period illustrated by garments and accessories that allows the reader to delve beneath the outer surface silhouette seen in paintings, prints, and on museum mannequins to reveal garment construction, fit, underpinnings, alterations, and simple thrift. While many costume histories focus on a single gender and social class, "What Clothes Reveal" includes examples for men, women, and children--not only gentry but also common folk. While author Baumgarten's "Eighteenth Century Clothing at Williamsburg" was intended to be a catalog of the collection, "What Clothes Reveal" goes several steps further. Baumgarten explores the deeper meaning of individual items and their construction, offers an curatorial interpretation of the garments and objects, and places them in a historical context by identifying details about the original owner where possible. While not intended to be the minute examination of garments in her "Costume Close-up: Clothing Construction and Pattern, 1750-1790," it is an important companion. While the general photos are typical, the detail photos are rare in costume histories. Readers shouldn't ignore the sidebars, the timeline, or the footnotes. The extensive bibliography offers a superb list of additional titles to assist with further research. This book is a must for costume historians, curators, collectors, re-enactors, and others who seek to understand 18th and early 19th century garments and the lives and times of those who wore them. Baumgarten unbuttons many mysteries in a thoroughly readable style, leaving the reader anxious for her next contribution to the field of costume history.

An Revolutionary War Embroiderer's Dream.......2005-04-11

This remarkable reference book consists of six chapters and a conclusion segment. So much information is included in this work that one can review it on many levels. My interest in this book is 18th century embroidery. The work of an 18th century surface embroiderer is foretold in this book and is portrayed in many venues. Embellished textiles such as stomachers, heavily embroidered pudding caps, women's cord quilted waistoats, swaddling bands for the new infant, and a yellow silk infant gown with a matching embroidered satin cap. Also, stunning embelishments on items such as spangled men's waistcoats, still unmade but outlined, on a large piece of silk are displayed with magnified detail allowing stitch colors, patterns, and directions to be studied. Included in What Clothes Reveal are beautiful examples of embroidered aprons for both the gentile ladies and the common women, different styles of pockets, covered and embroidered buttons, men's embroidered bargello wallets, and impressive men's caps. Baumgarten also included beautiful examples of ladies' fans, a wedding gown, and full maternity and nursing gown details including stays.

I ordered this book upon its release and studied it relentlessly. Afterwards I went to Colonial Williamsburg and experienced first hand this entire collection. With knowing and understanding the inside workings of this display, I was able to totally appreciate and understand the items in front of me.

Great Reference Guide.......2004-09-30

I am a historical seamstress that uses this book to copy the shape and style of Rev.War garments. I really love this book and go back to it over and over. It is a very useful book in my reference library.

A must-have reference for Colonial & Federal period clothing.......2004-01-15

At first glance, this book is amazing just for the feast it provides for the eyes just looking (and drooling) at the professional photographs of the costumes in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. When the reader really sits down and is able to read the text, the reader will find that the detail of the book is also amazing. The book does a marvelous job of explaining how clothing was used as a symbol of status, from the slave to the wealthy. It goes into deep detail the type of fabrics used, and the cut of the clothing used to achieve a certain look. It goes on to show what construction techniques and trims were used on some of the garments. A chapter on clothing from infancy to old age is also a treat and I was amazed to see that the cut of infant's clothing mirrored the cut of adult clothing very closely. I am most impressed with the use of cross-reference in the book. If a type of material or a cut of clothing is referred to in the text, a cross-referenced photo always accompanies it. Since purchasing this book, I have been able to date many items I have seen on eBay and in private collections. It is a really well written book and a must-have reference for the collector of antique fashions, designers, and museums.

Helped my son to read.......2002-01-20

I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.

A delightful gem.......2000-04-05

Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.

Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.

The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.

Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.

If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.

A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child.......1999-09-30

The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.

Over rated. Too wordy and advanced for children under 15........1998-12-11

The book is nicely illustrated and the book quality is good. However, it is too advanced for children. It is over-rated I suspect due to the voices of the celebrities that are on the CD. Many pages are actually quite depressing and negative. I like more upbeat books even if there is a moral to be taught.

I read this book to my little sister, she is 9 and thought it was the funnist book she had ever heared of. She really liked the part were the emporer.... well I won't give the ending away. But, I hope you enjoy it.

Despite our need to rhapsodize about Kafka The Wounded Original, Anderson drags us back to earth and redirects our gaze to what he really was--a smart guy from an unpleasant home, stuck in a dead-end job he was good at but loathed---who one day as a teen sat on a hillside overlooking Prague and decided to write out "my inner dream-world." That inner life which, as such, reflected the turbulent first quarter of the 20th century, is universal and representative, and thus canonical. But it had its wellspring in the pamphlets, journals, theatre pieces, lectures, the junk science and the fads--and the clothes--that everyone else was viewing at the time.

This absolutely brilliant little book meditates on a ridiculous and almost throwaway notion-that Kafka's dandyism (and subsequent aesthetic severity) weren't symptomatic so much as the core of all he was trying to be...and say. Exhaustively researched, thrillingly illustrated, Kafka's Clothes is about the smartest treatise on my favorite neurotic I've ever read--and believe me, I've read a LOT. I'm absolutely convinced of Anderson's thesis--he's got the playbills, the magazine illustrations, the diary entries to prove it. And you thought Frank poured over Milena Jasenska's fashion articles because he was in love! You silly!

Anderson's further assertion--that Kafka hid his influences by stripping his prose of all identifying tags--seems to point towards Blooms "Anxiety of Influence" writ large--or small, as the case may be. His arguments are compelling, probable--possible, even, given FK's self-involvement. Anyway, Anderson's clean prose leads the reader into an original look at art and its makers. Just about every Kafka biographer--and tons of academics--quote or gloss this book . If you have even a rudimentary knowledge of his life and work, you'll recognize the truth of Anderson's ideas, especially because he speaks German. It's worth every dime. Hey, remember Dora Diamant's quip that even when the two of them were starving during the Inflation in Berlin, Franz always wore hand-tailored suits? I've read her memoir of those months, and I always thought it was a throwaway comment, not jibing with my hero's ethos. Hmmm.

We call ... Anderson delivers! A Gem!.......2000-03-04

While his previous two works, "From the Ground Up: A Study of the Use of Prepositions in The Dramatic Works of Nikolai Gogal," and "Metamorphosis," were both gloriously academic and even enjoyable, Mark M. Anderson scores with his newest! (Although I did find his insect to human thing interesting.) "Kafka's Clothes..." gives us an indepth view into the wardrobe of this guy Franz Kafka. I particularly enjoyed the long descriptions of his Wednesday sweater, an article of clothing that echoes vaguely of the modern day sweater-vest. The guy, Franz Kafka, wore a lot of neutrals, mostly like tweed and wool. Anderson gives wonderful insight into the sock drawer not only of the guy but of the time. Engaging. Brilliant? Also, not to be missed is chapter four's retelling of "The Pied Piper." I had no idea that the guy playing the flute was blonde. Who knew?

I titled this review "just average" because I found this book to be very basic and not too interesting. My boys never got into the book. There is nothing special about it.

Cute Book.......2000-05-20

This book is well-illustrated, very colorful and a good way to teach French. Be prepared though, it serves the same purpose as flashcards would with the words in each language - rather than a story.

Perhaps the visual appeal of the pictures could also help the children learn the words, but I find it tedious to "read" so as to familiarize my little one with the words. I'd use this as a supplement to using the words in other ways rather than a teaching device in itself.

Great for any age.......2000-04-29

I grew up bilingual in NYC, and with the birth of my child, I wanted a natural way to incorporate Spanish into our lives (I now live in the NW). This book is wonderful, because the bright, contrasting colors make it possible for me to read this book to my newborn, and she is interested in the colorful illustrations, as weel as what I'm saying, in either Spainsh or English,and then my anglo husband can use it as well.

A good idea- but .........2007-06-15

This is a very good idea, and it provides a lot of interesting information. For instance on Coffee which was first drunk in the Ethopian highlands, and had its first 'house' in Turkey, and then had its first English appearance in 'Lloyd's 'in London which was to become the center of the world's insurance industry. Information of this kind is fine. And there is something here I am sure for everyone interested in accumulating information about the origins of various products, institutions. But the book takes on very big subjects such as the origins of the major religions and does them very scant justice. It is superficial in its writing about major topics.
In its excessive simplicity on complex subjects it is also often simply wrong about the things.
This is a good idea but it could have been done in a far more interesting, informative and sound way.
