Customer Reviews:
Handbook of Early Literacy Research, V2.......2007-09-02
I received this product in great shape and in a very short amount of time.
Wonderful Reference Book.......2006-02-24
This book is an excellent reference, with up to date research results pertaining to the area of early literacy, by authors who are specialists in their field. While many research books are difficult to read unless you have the technical background to understand typical research jargon, this book is easy reading, with fascinating topics for those in the field of early childhood education. The topics are current, with a focus on what the burning issues are today. I have to admit, this is one of the best research books I have purchased in a long time. I would highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-05-12
This was a great book to help give teachers ideas on how to run writing workshops in the classroom. As a pre-service teacher this book really helped calm my nerves about teaching writing because does give so many helpful suggestions. It is truly a practical guide to writing workshops.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER.......2005-10-23
This is the best one of the best instructional models for teaching writing to the youngest of writers. It includes practical teaching strategies supported by sound teaching philospy. I wish it had been available when I began teaching 20+ years ago. I purchased it for a colleague who is a beginning teacher because I didn't want to part with my copy.
NorthCarolinaTeacher.......2005-08-27
This has been a great resource for implementing Writer's Workshop in my first grade classroom. The guide is easy to read with many tips to use thouroughout the school year. This guide is packed with information on teaching writing and how to use techniques to help your classroom run smoothly.
Teaching the Youngest Writers: A Practical Guide.......2004-07-10
This book was very informative. Writing is a hard subject to teach and this is a book that can help you get started after reading it. I learned about target skills that are appropriate for K-2 students. There are not a lot of good books that focus on writing in the early grades. I can't wait to use what I learned in my classroom next year.
The only negative is that I wish there were more assessment and set up suggestions.
Invaluable Resource for Primary Grade Teachers.......2004-04-20
In Teaching the Youngest Writers, Marcia Freeman outlines a comprehensive writing curriculum for educators in the primary grades. She provides step-by-step lesson ideas for teaching writing skills, the writing process, and introducing your students to the various genres of writing.
Ms. Freeman provides plenty of practical ideas and as well as creative suggestions from other teachers across the nation. She includes what to teach on the first day of school, what to expect from your students at different times of the year, how to link her program to your state standards, and even how to effectively manage your classroom environment. She explains the seven different stages of emergent writing and provides teaching strategies for students at each stage. She even includes additional ideas for teaching ESOL students.
This in-depth resource provides everything you need to implement a writing curriculum. Yet, teachers can individualize the program by incorporating their own models and ideas. Plenty of examples following each lesson, codes, and page and chapter references make this book user-friendly and easy to navigate.
I recommend this for any teacher who struggles with teaching writing, or is just looking for new ideas for their writing curriculum. To get the most out of it, read it thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the lessons and techniques. It will take some time to prepare and organize, but in the end, it will be well worth it!

Terrific Resource.......2000-04-25
I have used this book for the last two years as a source of engaging activities for seventh graders. Strouf includes a broad selection of topics which fit easily into my district's curriculum. Students enjoy the lessons and grasp the concepts more easily. I have shared this book with teachers from other content areas as well, since many of the lessons adapt to other disciplines.

Book Description
B> Finally there exists a book that addresses grades four through eight exclusively! Beginning in the intermediate grade years and continuing on through the middle grades both the nature of literacy concerns and the nature of students change dramatically. It is at this time that school textbooks and other literacy tasks expand and broaden, so too do the development concerns for young adolescents. Promoting Literacy in the Intermediate and Middle Grades is designed as a reference for pre-service and practicing classroom teachers in all subject areas of these grade spans as they take on increased responsibility for introducing, developing and maintaining literacy skills and abilities as well as establishing and maintaining classroom climates that promote and nurture students' literacy. Promoting Literacy in the Intermediate and Middle Grades provides up-to-date research on a wide range of literacy concerns and then translates that research into practice through a series of chapters that focus on specific literacy issues. The text covers a wide range of topics of interest, from the role of the principal and what makes an effective literacy program, to specific characteristics of this age group (who they are) to instructional strategies for meeting their needs in the classroom (how to teach them). Well-known experts from the field of literacy education and intermediate and middle grades education have contributed chapters in their areas of expertise. The chapters are short, yet comprehensive, are reader friendly and reflect the most current thinking in the field. Most of the chapters include easy to follow sample lessons and classroom or school applications. This book is encyclopedic in nature, in that it contains a broad spectrum of topics that can be read cover to cover or used as a reference guide on issues of particular interest. For anyone interested in intermediate and middle school literacy.

More Story Stretchers for the Primary.......2007-04-09
I was disappointed in this book. I also own the original story stretchers for the primary grades. I found this second book to be geared towards intermediate grades. The original book includes far more writing activities that, in my opinion, are more suitable for lower grades, such as K-2. These stories in the second book are too indepth and the writing activities, when included, have more higher order thinking scenarios-something my first graders are not quite ready for in their writings.
