4 out of 5 stars What's Missing.......2007-05-12

This is indeed a beautiful book, but it is also maddening! A full length color photo of each garment should have been included to demonstrate how the detail relates to the whole and the black and white line drawings don't do it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and well laid out.......2006-10-11

This book features pictures of details from extant ethnic costumes from more than fifty countries. Next to each picture is a flat (line drawing) of the whole garment, which allows you to see construction and some stitching details, as well as the overall shape. Descriptions alongside each flat include mention of the gender, class, time period, and ethnicity of a person who might wear the garment, as well as a context in which they might do so.

The organization is a little odd, since it relates to the particular detail featured (e.g. "Necklines", or "Pleats and Gathers") but the index allows a search by place, which is very helpful. It also includes a map, glossary, and suggestions for further readings. Students interested in cultural dress will enjoy this brief introduction, though for more in-depth studies of a region, they should look into other resources.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, excellent text.......2005-12-29

This is one of the most gorgeous and inspirational dress/costume books I've ever seen. The photos are clear, detailed, and focus on all the right things. If you're looking for design ideas or just eye candy, this fits the bill. It's a pity amazon.com doesn't remove the one-star review. His complaint has nothing to do with the book itself--just poor HTML linking on amazon's part. This book deserves to have a solid five-star rating. (6/9/06--I'm happy to see the one-star review was removed)

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational for sewers and designers of Wearable Art!.......2005-09-29

Dress in Detail from around the world is one of the most inspirational books I have purchased. It expands your paradigm for designing your own patterns using the line drawings of these costumes. The embellishments, closures and use of multiple fabric combos is endless. The designs are simple and yet elegant depending on your choice in fabric. I feel they are adaptable to many figure types. I loved the focus of detail on necklines and cuffs as well as closures!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-09-15

This is a wonderful resource for costuming. The detail photos are excellent. The only thing that could make it better would be more photos.

4 out of 5 stars hard to find information in a usable format.......2007-09-27

The author clearly is a scholar and brings his special knowledge to this interesting and rare book. I especially liked the illustrations that drew on ukiyo e woodblock traditions. I passed it on to a friend who has the skills to utilize the information.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!.......2007-08-07

I bought this book, as well as "The Book of Kimono," to learn about kimonos and how to make one for a Halloween costume. He gives you all the information you need to make one and it's accessories, but there is a lot of measuring, as well as cutting and sewing. Since following his book would take a lot of time, I plan on using the information to modify a commercial pattern (Simplicity pattern 5839) to make it more authentic. For example, embroidering a "family crest" on the back as a good luck symbol. (Mine will be an origami crane since I folded a thousand of them as a wedding gift once.) I will also be following his instructions for the obi and how to tie it since the pattern's isn't quite authentic enough. Overall, I learned a lot and am very pleased with the book.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful book!.......2007-05-26

I read other's comments about this book,I suppose mine will perhaps make someone else buy it,and maybe be annoyed with me if they wish they paid attention to the "nay" reveiws...
No, the book has no patterns.
You have to pay attention to the fact that fabric comes in standard widths. The diagrams, are exactly all that a person needs....it so simple, really. This book shows you approximate yardage lengths, and where to fold those lengths, and what straight lines go where in making a robe, trousers, whatever.
I found it a great book, when I looked at the diagrams, it was a bit like the most basic geometry, made even easier by the "Ah-haas,that the diagrams seemed to do for me.
If I were an instructor in fiber arts and wearable artmaking, I would strongly recommend this book to any student who wanted the most basic and straightforeward information in simple garment construction.

4 out of 5 stars Don't let the cover fool you!.......2007-05-13

Yeah, the cover is funky, and there are a few "huh?" photos in the middle, but this really is a serious book about making kimono. As mentioned by someone else, there is almost no direct information about wearing a kimono in this book, just making them. The only direct wearing information you get is how to tie a helper chord to pull the sleeves back when you are working, how to tuck the kimono hem up when you are traveling or working, and how to tie the men's basic obi.

An average or beginning sewer is going to be intimidated and overwhelmed by the detail of information in the book. As already mentioned, there are no patterns in the book per se, but that's because the Japanese have a set pattern that they work with. The book describes the pattern and has drawings to help you mark out your own. It talks about how to cut cloth from the traditional Japanese bolt, or how to work with the bolts of cloth that you might find in Europe or America which are a different width. If you are actually making a kimono, I suggest you read through the entire instructions, mark the parts you need, and before you so much as touch a needle and thread or scissors, read those parts *again* to make sure you have all the information in mind. It's easy to accidentally miss some rather important bit of information.

This book has information on making all of the parts of the kimono (though, I agree with a previous reviewer that some of the organization is ... interesting), including how to make obi and tabi (the socks). It does not show how to make hakama *HOWEVER* it does show how to make mompe - which are very similar to hakama, just shorter and gathered at knees or ankles instead of full length and full cuff.

There are several suggestions tucked in random locations about how to make more modern versions - how to add pockets to the mompe for instance - but you do sort of have to hunt for them and all of them are for making a new outfit, not updating an older one.

I mostly used this book for information on how to *repair* my kimono, and this book had all the information I needed. It showed me how to do the hand sewing (in an easier way than *I* was trying to do it), and how to do the special knots and double-backs needed for the kimono to lay properly and stay in place. The book made it so clear for me that once I matched up the styles in the book with my kimono, I redid all of the stitching on my kimono in less time than I had expected just the sectional repairs to take.

3 out of 5 stars Making Japanese Clothes........2007-03-08

The book is well written and very complete in the detailing of Japanese clothes. The title is a bit misleading though. It implies that there are patterns in the book although this is not the case. There are instructions on how to create your own patterns. While this may not be too difficult for an experienced seamstress it may be a bit disconcerting for a beginner.

When Chang Yu-I was three her mother tried to bind her feet. But the child's cries so tormented her brother that he convinced their mother to stop. This break with convention foreshadowed the extraordinary life Yu-i was to lead. After following her husband, poet Hsu Chi-Mo, a noted philanderer, to Oxford, she made history by becoming the first Chinese woman to have a western-style divorce at age 22. Determined to make her own way, she moved to America and served in a series of prestigious positions, including president of a bank. Written by Yu-i's great niece, Pang-Mei Natasha Chang, Bound Feet and Western Dress chronicles the life of this exceptional woman.

Book Description

"In China, a woman is nothing."

Thus begins the saga of a woman born at the turn of the century to a well-to-do, highly respected Chinese family, a woman who continually defied the expectations of her family and the traditions of her culture. Growing up in the perilous years between the fall of the last emperor and the Communist Revolution, Chang Yu-i's life is marked by a series of rebellions: her refusal as a child to let her mother bind her feet, her scandalous divorce, and her rise to Vice President of China's first women's bank in her later years.

In the alternating voices of two generations, this dual memoir brings together a deeply textured portrait of a woman's life in China with the very American story of Yu-i's brilliant and assimilated grandniece, struggling with her own search for identity and belonging. Written in pitch-perfect prose and alive with detail, Bound Feet and Western Dress is the story of independent women struggling to emerge from centuries of customs and duty.

5 out of 5 stars Top-Hats, Half-Moons, and the Painful Glint of Changes.......2007-07-17

Change can be a frightening affair, and looking back at change can be something that seems almost alien when beheld in the light of certain convictions. That seems to encapsulate the whole of the experience that Chang Yu-I talks about as she tries to explain something of who she is to her granddaughter, Pang-Mei, and it is one of the things that seemed to haunt me as a reader as I listened to Yu-I's tale. The chapters switch from Yu-I to Pang-Mei to give you and idea of how things have changed and to try to identify one person with the other, and I have to say that I found myself glued to the pages and not able to stop reading this book. At first I simply thought it was a story about a granddaughter wanting to explore her grandmother's life because she was the first person to have a Western-style divorce in China, and maybe that was her reason beginning the book. Still, the book goes well beyond that and touches on the dynamics of change and strength and how strong a person can be even when they think they are at their weakest.

Honestly, I thought I could vicariously feel my heart cracking under the weight of some of Yu-I's confessions, amazed by some of the things she was able to tell her granddaughter.

One of the best things about this tale is the detail that Yu-I goes into about China, and about the way things were seen in the past versus the way things became seen as war loomed on the horizon. Yu-I gives a great amount of detail about what it was like to be a child in a country like China, and she vividly recollects what its like to have one's feet bound and the reasons why this practice took place. All that breaking and rebreaking, the tying of the big toe over and over again; when I read this I cringed because it seemed so debilitating just to have a crescent-shape added to the foot. Furthering this are pictures in the book, showing what the feet actually look like when this happens - you can see the shriveled remains of feet that look almost mummified, and you can tell some of the extremes that went into making a foot look like that. Yu-I talks about the pain that's she, herself, experienced because of this practice, too; she tells her granddaughter about being three and having her mother try to bind her feet, and then talks about the torment of those moments and how it was her brother that made her stop this because he couldn't deal with her suffering. Yu-I goes on to tell of the pain that this caused her, too, with her always feeling as if she were ugly because she had "big feet" and "big feet" made a person almost untouchable when it comes to marriage. Still, she does marry the poet Hsu Chi-Mo and, for a time, she thinks this is perfect and learns the rites of being a wife. She cares for the mother-in-law, she takes care of the husband's family; basically she becomes a slave and thinks that this dedication is seem by her husband as love. It is only when she moves to a foreign country with her husband that she finds out what he is like and how she is alone, and when she understands that she is utterly abandoned she explains how it feels to want to die.

There are other painful things in the book, too, things I can't disclose without messing up part of the tale, but I can say that when she is in Germany and loses something more dear to her than anything that this was devastating to read, making the book almost too heavy to pick up because its honesty was like a barb in the soul. I appreciated that, to be honest, and can say that I have read a lot of pieces of literature but that I have rarely encountered a person like Yu-I that both loves the world she lives in, understands the things that she has experienced, and even knows what forgiveness is like.
While this normally would not be something I would recommend, it has my highest recommendation and the most humble form of respect I can give, thinking it an enduring read that really has something to say.
I cannot give the book or the voice behind it enough praise.

2 out of 5 stars Let's See by Clare M........2006-12-13

Bound Feet and Western Dress by Pang-Mei Natasha Chang is about a young girl who has a unique relationship with her great aunt, Chang Yu-i. She first meets her great aunt in 1874, at a family dinner. Chang Yu-i had just come to New York after having lived in China, and then Hong Kong. Several family members had come to these dinners in the past, but this was the first time Pang-Mei had met her great aunt. Pang-Mei explains how the family refers to Chang Yu-i as "half man" because of her strength and persistence. Pang-Mei grew closer to her great aunt as time passed, but she still knew very little about her. She first discovered some of Chang Yu-i's secrets while studying Chinese History at Harvard University. She learned that her great aunt had been married to a well-known romantic poet in China, as well as issued the first "real divorce" in Chinese History. After Pang-Mei learned of this, she asked Chang Yu-i about it at once. Her great aunt told her hundreds of stories about her life in China eventually unraveling over a long period of time. Pang-Mei and Chang Yu-i build a strong relationship together and learn about each other, as well as themselves. Pang-Mei comes to love and grasp the heritage she once tried to hide and Chang Yu-i understands herself better after having told her own stories. They are finally brought together even closer by a major phenomenon that takes place in the end.
I found Bound Feet and Western Dress to be rather tedious. Personally, I find books that dives right into the plot to be the most enjoyable. Bound Feet and Western Dress eased slowly into the excitement. However, I found this book be written with great enthusiasm and detail. Pang-Mei Natasha Chang used delightful details that gave me a perfect picture of the context. On Page 9, Chang Yu-i tells her grand niece about the strict rules she grew up with, "Chinese paintings required admiration form above, Baba said, explaining that the perspective of Chinese paintings differed from Western ones. The best paintings were only hung when your grandfather, Eighth Brother, and I cleaned them, passing tiny feather dusters over the surface of the rice paper. Of all the children, you grandfather and I were the two that Baba allowed near his paintings, and her would hover behind us as we worked, explaining the genius behind a musty mountain landscape or historical portrait." This excerpt shows the details the author used to represent her great aunt's stories.
The stories of Chang Yu-i told were also extremely touching. Not only did they paint a precise image in my mind of her life but were also genuine. For instance, when she was telling of her childhood and growing up with her large family her descriptions were beautifully written and conveyed. I loved hearing of her two favorite brothers personalities and what each of them gave her. I fully understood her thoughts and joy while talking about her brothers.
Generally, I think Bound Feet and Western Dress is a thoughtful and well-written book. It is historical and educating as well as a good read. I would suggest it be read.

4 out of 5 stars A Filial Memoir.......2005-06-20

From what I've read about Chinese culture, the ties that bind a family together are one of its strongest and most enforced traditions. "Bound Feet and Western Dress" is an interesting memoir for the fact that it does not read like a memoir at all. It is the story of a great-aunt told to her great-niece, who mixes in her own observations about her aunt's life and her experience as a Chinese-American among her narrative.

"Bound Feet and Western Dress" tells the story of the author's great-aunt, Chang Yu-i. Born in 1900, Yu-i was the first woman in her family to refuse to have her feet bound. Despite being modern in this aspect, she is stunted and traditional in her upbringing, her education, and the way she acts in her first marriage. She is famous for having perhaps the first "modern" divorce in China and is determined to make it on her own from that point on. No one in her family truly knows her story until her great-niece asks her to tell it.

What passes between the two of them may not be a ground-breaking, fascinating story but is rather a quiet reflection on growing up in a changing time. Yu-i struggles through a great majority of her life to be both modern and traditional, to do what is 'right and expected' and to do what she wanted to do. She is an inspiration to her great-niece, a first generation Chinese-American who feels at home with neither nationality. The intersections of the author's remembrances of past encumbrances fit nicely with Yu-i's struggle to bridge the past with the new. "Bound Feet and Western Dress" offers a poignant look at the role that women have played in China and how they are defining themselves today.

2 out of 5 stars Irritating narrative, badly written book.......2005-04-04

The idea was good but Natasha simply didn't have the talent to put it in written and understandable text. She switches all the time the "I", got me confused about who she was talking about, her or her aunt. She mixed both stories, suddenly she wants to explains her "great destiny" (narcissism) at the same time as she tells the strory about her great aunt. Those second, third, fourth, xth brother's wife, sister, uncles, all irritating narrative. I really tried to like the story, to pick and read and just gave me headaches trying to figure it out whose story she is talking. Go back to school. I don't know how the editor accepts this kind of book to be published, need a lot of editing. Maybe someone in the publishing house is her relative.

5 out of 5 stars A good book, because it is a true story........2004-04-05

I enjoyed the auuthor's simple writing style. The story is about a woman who decides whether or not to make her own life, or allow it to be decided for her. The best thing about this book, is that it is a true story. The book was fast reading, and very inspirational. I would reccommend it.

Oakes and Riewe present a beautiful portrait of the indigenous peoples of northern Siberia and the Russian Far East, using their own magnificent photographs of clothing, footwear and landscapes, plus those of other researchers, and from Russian and European museums. The beauty and harmony of traditional Siberian ways of life emerge from the pages. The authors, specialists in clothing and land use among northern peoples of Canada, have avoided showing us the poverty and destruction of today's everyday life in Russia's north, emphasizing instead the lifeways that indigenous peoples are struggling to preserve. (A less romantic picture can be seen in Doeker Mach's Forgotten Peoples of Siberia. Zurich: Scalo 1993.) The text, based on the authors' fieldwork, with the help of specialists from Russian museums and educational institutions, gives a historical overview, showing varieties of environment and ways of life, linguistic and cultural groupings, details of sewing tools, materials and methods of skin preparation, and of spiritual traditions based in nature. Some of these traditions relate directly to clothing and footwear, vital to survival in harsh northern climates. For example the Even people say that footwear provides a connection between the sacred and the profane. Good boots keep them in harmony with the earth. Sewing tools frequently show up in traditional tales, protecting and empowering women in the same way hunting tools empower men. I feel that the spiritual importance of clothing could have been clarified even more, and that it would have been valuable to give a more complete overview of Siberian spiritual traditions in the book's introduction. This would have allowed the authors to show which aspects are shared by many peoples and which are unique to one. They could also answer fascinating questions like why the Even and Evenk wear open coats in winter (which may reflect more southerly origins), and why Chukchi women make their clothing from whole skins instead of cutting them, (probably to keep the power of the animal intact). Emphasis on footwear reflects the authors' area of specialization as well as the help of the Bata Shoe Museum in bringing to Canada the footwear exhibit from the Russian Ethnographic Museum (also called "Spirit of Siberia") on which the book is based. The photographs and text elaborate the uses of reindeer skin, walrus skin, various furs, embroidery with threads and with the chin hairs of the reindeer, fur mosaics and beadwork. Appendices show the distinct details characteristic of the footwear of the various peoples, as well as skin preparation techniques. Besides the uniformly positive image provided by the photos, one other problem is with the frequent use of the "ethnographic present tense", which makes it difficult for the reader to be sure which traditions are still followed today and which are not. One example is the bear festival of the Amur peoples, in which a young bear was kept in a household for several years before being sacrificed to the masters of the taiga. This ceremony has been revived only once since the end of the repressive Soviet era, and the people decided not to do it again because changed mores made the sacrifice seem too cruel to the bear. Spirit of Siberia provides a beautiful and fascinating introduction to an ancient but radically changing tradition.

3 out of 5 stars Dress Clothing of the Plains Indians.......2007-09-15

Although the text is rich with descriptions, I was expecting more illustrations, either photographs (historical and/or contemporary) or line drawings. The few that are included are helpful, but more on women's dress would be very helpful. This book concentrates to a large extent on male dress, not very enlightening for a woman trying to recreate traditional women's dress.

Book Description

Wonderful reviews and word-of-mouth helped make the hardcover edition of this title--a unique celebration of African-American male fashion and style--a best-seller. Essence called it "a testament to the creative spirit of Black men . . . filled with striking photographs of Black legends and insightful essays about the historical context of their apparel." With sleek photographs and a host of celebrity interviews, the special value hardcover edition captures the elegance of Nat King Cole, comfort of Bill Cosby, hip-hop style of LL Cool J, and sex appeal of Denzel Washington. Expert advice rounds out the "history of fabulous sartorial style" (Essence), showing readers how to accomplish the same looks on their own. This is a must-have for Black men--and the women who love them.

5 out of 5 stars Rhonda Fleming.......2005-01-29

Lloyd Boston is totally awesome to have written this book. I stumbled upon this book while researching men's hats for a school research thesis. What I found was not only men and their hats, but historical detail about the Black man and his hat and who the man is with and without his headcovering. The sad thing at the time was that I had to return it to the library; but now that someone gave me a gift from Amazon.com, I am now purchasing this reference material, conversation piece This book a must have in my library and collection of fine art.

THANKS LLOYD BOSTON for sharing Men of Color: Fashion, History, and Fundamentals. And Thanks Amazon.com for allowing me to get it at an affordable price.

5 out of 5 stars All I can say is -- WOW!.......2000-06-03

This book is NOT a fashion book as the understated subtitle suggests. Instead, I am looking at a GALLERY of fine Black men throughout the ages with their "fashions" being very secondary.

This book is filled with WONDERFUL color and black and white photos of Black men -- famous and unknown, past and present. This book is monumentally political for it demonstrates why the Black man is loved, hated, feared, hunted, and reverenced throughout the world! This book is a job well-done.

4 out of 5 stars Men of Color - What a find.......2000-05-09

I thought the book was excellent. It artfully combines historical content with practical advice that any African American male can use. I always thought it took a lot of money to look great. But using this book as a guide definitely helped.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for All Stylish Men.......2000-04-15

This book is simply amazing. I received the book as a gift from my fiancee and have treasured this book ever since. First, the photographs are amazing, pleasant, and necessary reminders of the way stylish men of color have shaped style and fashion over the years. Second, there is the instructional aspect of the book that covers matters outside of clothing and which I can't say enough about. After reading the section of the book that dealt with hair and skin care, I was motivated to go buy shaving soap and shaving brush and dispense with the shaving gel. Thanks to Lloyd Boston and this book I have had the best shaving experiences of my life. I can't say how necessary this book is for the many black men who go through the drama of ingrown facial hair. I have less drama than most in that department, but I have still seen a remarkable improvement in my skin, as would any man after following the book's advice. The book even arms you with the necessary vocabulary to navigate your way around a men's shop with ease. There is even instructions on how to do the perfect shoe shine! And as Lloyd Boston points out, well-shined shoes are the best complement to any wardrobe. So,to sum up this book, it is NECESSARY! It is necessary for any stylish man and any man who strives to be so. It is more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals.......2000-01-25

After reading and reading and reading Lloyd Boston's book "Men of Color: Fashion, Historyi, Fundamentals", I can honestly say that I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is a source of reference to me when I buy gifts for the special men in my life or when they are unsure of how to buy for themselves. It is a conversation piece with all who enter my home. We reminisce about the pictures and ooh and ahh over beauty held within the pictures. My favorite interview is when Mr. Boston speaks with Jesse Jackson on youth culture and fashion. Thanks to Mr.Boston for the picture of Tyson Beckford and the other fine men!

The history of the Inuit has always fascinated me and this book, "Sinews of Survival", lends incredible insight into the form and function of their clothing. It would appear that they had something much more effective than Gore-Tex, among other things. The text and the pictures are excellent and I would urge anyone interested in life above the Arctic Circle to add this book to their library.
