Common sense dress code. I read more informative book about dressing.

5 out of 5 stars Found help to professionalize my image.......2007-02-20

My coworkers see a person destined for clerical glory when they interact with me. My wardrobe needs a serious makeover. However, my concern is not so much "the interview, succeeding in the job, and getting a better job". I'm starting a home-based business and I purchased this book to help me to kick up my image as a businesswoman. I didn't know how to put together a serious professional wardrobe until I purchased it. I love the pictures, the suggestions - I love everything about this book. I'm going to obtain the black, navy, gray, and beige suits in the high-quality fabrics recommended, as well as in a couple of other colors. I'm also going to follow pretty much all of the advice in here tweaked to my personal professional style. I most highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-02-19

I have been purchasing various books on how to dress and this is my favorite book. I love how the information was presented. I bought both the Women and Men books and I have enjoyed both. These books are essential for me in improving my dress from my current wardrobe. I also really enjoy the travel tips, very useful. I dress both my boyfriend and myself from the great tips these books offer. GREAT BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars I have enjoyed and employed this book since the eighties.......2006-11-21

This book is spot-on accurate. I grew up in an exclusive area full of well-to-do people and long-time "well-bred" families. The information in here may seem outdated at times but it is still the right info if you want to make it big-time. There are people and companies that still follow these styles. If you just want to do-alright or be happy in an average job, this book will make you shine above the rest and will give you the extra push needed during an interview. If you are applying to an ivy league college, this book will help you fit in. If you have some common sense and can adapt the information in this book to your current job needs, then use this book as a guideline. Remember, don't outshine your superior! If they dress like a slob or like they shop at ross or macy's, your brooks brothers suits might intimidate them. Many jobs may require you to be less formal, but the information here reminds you that you are an employee, not a prostitute, college kid or someone who has no idea how to dress. Your job as employee is to inform your employer that you are capable and NOT to tell them what music you like, what style you wore in high school and cerainly not to tell them that you are a hottie, even if you are.

Oh, and navy is not always the right colour. Dark grey should be the first choice, navy is the second choice.

Have fun being the best you can and looking it, too!

4 out of 5 stars Good buy.......2006-08-24

If you're fresh out of college and are looking for a guide to how to dress in the workplace, this book is pretty useful. If you've been in the workforce a while then it can be used to enhance your wardrobe. The tips are abundant, the language clear with lots of illustrations. It's a good gift for any college graduate and the male version is good too. Of course job culture is always evolving and sometimes the book can appear dated. In conclusion, this book is a good place to start a professional looking wardrobe but common sense is also needed to fit the adivce to the specific character of your workplace.

What's acceptable for "casual day" at work, and what veers too far to the sloppy side? Such fashion conundrums are solved in these inspiring, sumptuously photographed pages. Women's Wardrobe also features helpful guides for deciphering care labels and treating stains, plus etiquette guidance for dressing for events and different locations (job interview in Boston vs. Seattle; daytime vs. nighttime party). Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars idealizations of the classic.......2006-02-06

The headless, bodiless photos with waists unrealically nipped are less offensive than the usual fashion pages in the newspapers and magazines. The photos provide an idea on proportions, classic, expensive looks, what to approximate, not emulate.

A weak point is most American people are not thin and most of the outfits would not work.

This book is not exhaustive but goes well with Dress for Success (Molloy) and Pocket Stylist (Farr) neither of which provide photos of what they discuss.

5 out of 5 stars Fashion Is a Lifestyle.......2005-07-10

I really enjoyed this book even though I first hesitated at the price. Building and maintaining an up-to-date wardrobe is really a lifestyle that needs regular fine tuning. In this book, you are looking at your personal needs, understanding the elements of your own style and learning to choose what is right for you. You spend a alot of money on your clothes so choosing wisely is important. I also bought "Men's Wardrobe" as a gift.

3 out of 5 stars Great photos, need more ideas..........2003-08-12

I thought that the photos were great. I thought the text was very odd. The font sizes jumped all around and seemed to consume a page that could have been half used to illustrate the point instead of +20 font size. Artsy is fine. But if I want to get the simple idea, I want it simple -- not 'dressed' up.

When I think of a wardrobe, I think of work. So I didn't want to go into jeans too much. But I will check out Dress Smart and see if that complements this book well.

I did find the 'where' list in the back very helpful. I can visit the places and see what quality is and then shop around to find the best price.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great advice for wardrobe building.......2003-06-18

This Chic Simple book is written for those who have a closetful of clothes but nothing ever to wear. It helps women pull together a total wardrobe and focuses on such key elements as:

*style
*elements of clothing (color, fabric, texture)
*clothes (underwear,outerwear,suits etc)
*care of clothes
*definitions/glossary of fashion jargon

The book is very well illustrated with full color pictures and drawing. It does not give specific advice and seems to be written more for those in the clothing business/fashion designers. But overall, i enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great source for classic advice.......2003-05-19

I bought Chic Simple Women's Wardrobe when it first came out, and had reason to pull it out again when my wardrobe needed a complete overhaul due to weight loss. To my delight, the advice and the styles contained within are as fresh now as they were eight years ago. If you're looking for good, basic advice on how to build a classic wardrobe, you won't go wrong with the Chic Simple philosophy, and this book is a wonderful embodiment of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for making your own 1930s clothing.......2003-12-09

If you are an experienced sewer who wants to make your own clothing from the 1930s, this is the book for you. It doesn't have hats or hose, but it has everything else from foundation garments to outerwear. A big plus for this book is that for a few of the garments, they give the pattern drawing and a photo of the complete garmment on a real person. The book is also a good resource for dating the patterns in your pattern collection, as it gives the general outline of styles from each year of the 1930s. To use the patterns, you must be an experience sewer, as the patterns must be enlarged and the directions are sketchy.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderfully written book.......2007-02-18

Tony Bently an auther who writes in great detail ( she also wrote the indepth Winter Season, and Susanne Farrells Biography.)
Tony once again is very successful with this magical book. When one reads Costumes by Karinska you never want to put it down. This book is also very rich in photos. a great combination. One does not have to be a dancer to read this book.
It is a rare treat. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars NOT JUST COSTUMES.......2002-02-11

If you have ever seen a ballet by George Balanchine, then you are familiar with the name Karinska. In the foreward to this magnificently produced book, the great Balanchine is quoted as saying to the Ford Foundation that what he needed most for his work was "Karinska." Truth or overstatement, it is an obvious tribute to the woman who designed the costumes for more than 75 ballets by one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

The author, Toni Bentley was not only a dancer with Balanchine's New York City Ballet, she also wrote the best book on ballet I've ever read: WINTER SEASON, A DANCER'S JOURNAL.

In COSTUMES BY KARINSKA Bentley traces Barbara Karinska's life and work in Russia and then, after becoming one of the numerous emigrees to the West, in Paris, Monte Carlo, London, Hollywood and, finally, Manhattan in 1949. Karinska worked with many other famous creative people in her long and varied career including Agnes De Mille, Jerome Robbins, Franco Zeffirelli and George Cukor to name just a few.

This oversized book contains scores of wonderful photographs and sketches in color and in black and white including, to me, the most interesting part of the book: descriptions of how Karinska took "raw" sketches by artists such as Noguchi, Dali, Chagall, etc. and, literally, turned them into costumes.

Bentley writes gracefully and wittily and, most importantly, she doesn't only write for dance professionals.

Treat yourself to this relatively expensive but very much worthwhile history of costume in the last century and the personal and professional life of the woman who "dressed" so many major stars from Gypsy Rose Lee to Laurence Olivier. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars What? No patterns included with the book?.......2006-03-22

No Time to Sew is a great addition to a sewer's library. I had heard about it at an online list and decided I needed it. It is well illustrated, with plenty of tips and short cuts. The instructions refer to Betzina's own patterns that were originally included with the book. However, this edition, or the one from Amazon.com did not include the patterns.
since I had to purchase the patterns from another source, at added expense, I should have shopped around, paid full price and gotten the patterns.
The book is good for what it's worth, but has little value without the patterns

1 out of 5 stars No patterns included........2005-10-15

I have just received the book which I bought "new" from Amazon -- but no patterns are included. Since techniques are based on the patterns which should come with the book, without them, the book is not useful.
I called Amazon and explained that I need only the "patterns". They sent me another copy of the book. Again, without the patterns.
Would some one at Amazon look into this please? This book is of no use without the patterns!
Since I liked the book, I later ordered the patterns directly from the Sandra Betzina site.

4 out of 5 stars No Time to Sew: Fast and Fabulous Patterns & Techniques for Sewing a Figure-Flattering Wardrobe.......2005-08-29

This has proved to be a really useful book, lots of hints and techniques I haven't encountered before that have made my finished garments much better. As a self taught sewer this has been a great resource. I will be buying more of Sandra Betzina's books.

3 out of 5 stars Patterns not included.......2005-07-03

I bought the book with the understanding that the patterns were included, and they aren't so why purchase a new book when you still have to pay for the patterns. That is the reason I'm returning the book.

San Jose, CA

1 out of 5 stars Brand New Book from Amazon, But No Patterns???.......2005-06-04

I only just received my brand new copy from Amazon, and have been scratching my head. I read all the other reviews about making sure to buy a new copy - - - NOT used - - - because of the supposedly included patterns that the book is based on. I don't quite understand. I should have gotten patterns with this book - right? It's brand new, with the price to prove it! Not from Amazon Marketplace or used, NEW. WHERE ARE MY PATTERNS???

I can't use the book without the patterns --- if there were minus stars, that's what I'd give this book - because they sold it to me with the understanding that the patterns would be included - so minus the patterns equals minus stars.

    Book Description

Little Pink Raincoat is a collection of mini–profiles in shopping and romantic courage. A little Coco Chanel, a lot Carrie Bradshaw, with a dash of Maureen Dowd––this hip, hilarious account from Gigi Anders relates her experiences with the dual obsessions of clothing and men.

It's a classic female position for the Sex and the City set. From one very fabulous and elusive little pink raincoat (to woo the commitment phobe) to a pair of very persuasive peach panties (gift from a dazzling doc) Gigi Anders relates her experiences as they deal with the dual obsessions of clothing and men. Ten vignettes chronicling ten choice sartorial items and the ten corresponding boyfriends that would undoubtedly love her stylishly ever after, even if they didn't.

Gigi Anders spied her beautiful little pink raincoat in a Sunday Styles article, and, desperate to obtain one of her own, she proceeded single–mindedly to hunt it down. Six states and approximately seventy–five Gaps later, bliss in the form of a little pink raincoat was hers––a weapon of mass seduction that would surely make her boyfriend swoon permanently.

A tasty, universal, uplifting, pop cultural meditation on the things we crave and the lengths we'll go to get them, Little Pink Raincoat is ten short chapters organized around one freakin' fabulous and hard–to–come–by item –– either clothing or an accessory or a kind of makeup –– paired with the hard–to–pin–down man in question at the time of the given sartorial–cosmetic love obsession, and the quest to nail 'em both. The items and boyfriends are all from Anders' real life, her real (extremely jammed) closet and her bed.

4 out of 5 stars Janet Arnold for the 1920s.......2004-03-30

Similar to the Janet Arnold _Patterns of Fashion_ series, this book presents scaled patterns for all sorts of garments from the 1920s. Patterns include dresses, blouses, skirts, underwear, lingerie, etc. Useful if you know understand pattern drafting for creating period garments, or if you're interested in garment patterning of the 1920s. I especially liked that it focuses on more everyday wear, rather than couture garments.

      4 out of 5 stars Practical history.......2000-09-08

This book provides patterns and (very) basic instructions for constructing authentic fashions of the 1920's, made using original everyday garments. The patterns are on regular book pages printed on a grid. To use them one can either draw them out on bigger grid paper, or do what I did and take them to a copy center and blow them up on the oversize copier. This book is not for the novice sewer, but for someone with experience who wants a truly authentic 1920's look, you can't do better.

        Book Description

Relating to clothes is a fundamental experience in the lives of most Western women. Even when choice is fraught with ambivalence, clothing matters. From considerations about dressing for success, to worries about weight, through to investing particular articles of clothing with meaning bordering on the sacred, what we wear speaks volumes about personal identity - what is revealed, what is concealed, what is created. This book fills a gap in the existing literature on the ambivalence of fashion and dress by drawing on a wide range of women's experiences with their wardrobes and providing empirical data noticeably absent from other studies of women and dress. Navigating what is clearly a contested realm in feminist scholarship, contributors provide rich case studies of the reality of women's relationships with clothing. While on the surface concerns about fashion or dress may appear to reflect gendered patterns, in fact clothing may be used to challenge ascribed meanings about femininity.
