Book Description

75 Years of the Oscar, newly updated, revised, and expanded, is the official history of the Academy Awards written by film critic Robert Osborne in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It begins with a general history of the Academy followed by the author's lively, decade-by-decade overviews of the accomplishments, trends, and events that occurred during each ten-year period within the Academy and the film industry. The book also provides a year-by-year portrayal of the actual ceremonies, plus a complete listing of the nominees and winners in every category, making it the most comprehensive book on the subject. In addition to Osborne's text, there are personal remembrances of more than 100 Oscar winners, including Mickey Rooney, Mary Astor, Sir Laurence Olivier, Fred Zinnemann, Clint Eastwood, and Emma Thompson.

The 725 candid pictures from the evening's events, stills from the movies, and original posters for every best picture round out each section. Combining Osborne's extensive knowledge and the Academy's exceptional archives, including many rarely seen photographs, this book, ideal for scholars and film buffs alike, is unrivaled in illustration, accuracy, and scope.

This is a must-have of any film buff and is the most comprehen-
sive book of its kind that I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars An all-inclusive encyclopedia of the Academy Awards .......2006-02-23

This book is not a history in the since of most history books. It does not detail how the academy began, or how it changed over the years, or give you any kind of insider view of its workings. Instead, it is a complete listing of every nominee and every winner in every category since the award ceremony's inception in 1927. There are plenty of photographs of the nominees and images of scenes from the nominated films for each year, so it is not dry in the way many reference books are. In fact, Mr. Osborne's love of film and its history really shine through in the book. It is interesting to look through this book and see what we consider to be films that have withstood the test of time versus which ones were rewarded by the academy at the time. For example, in 1939, the Academy did recognize that "Gone with the Wind" was the best picture of the year, which people were lining up to watch in movie theaters until its television broadcast premiere in 1976. However, in 1941, "How Green was My Valley" won best picture, which is a film that hardly anyone watches anymore, while "Citizen Kane" was completely ignored. It's also interesting to see how the Academy compensated for past oversights by awarding performances that were less than stellar in subsequent years. For instance, in 1934 Bette Davis was overlooked in her performance in "Of Human Bondage". This caused a huge public outcry. The following year the Academy gave her the best actress award for her performance in "Dangerous"- a move that has largely been seen over the years as a consolation prize for what happened the year before.
This book is full of little insights such as these, and it is a fun book that gives hours of entertainment for film history buffs. I bought my first copy of this history by Mr. Osborne back in 1987 when he was then detailing the 60 years of the Oscar, and I enjoyed it so much I have been updating my copy every time he releases a new edition. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I was Looking For.......2005-10-17

Over the years, I have picked up a few books about the Academy Awards. I did so primarily to get a list of winners but I have also been interested in knowing the nominees. In the early days of the award it wasn't unusual to have eight or nine nominees for a particular award. However, the inference was still that there was something special about this particular movie in regards to this particular awards. I like that "75 Years of the Oscar" lists not only each award winner but each award nominee as well. I espcially appreciate the listing of all nominees for the Best Foreign Language award. I hadn't come across that before in any of the books I'd found.

"75 Years of the Oscar" makes for a large tome and I did have to send back the first edition of the book that I received due to weak binding for a book this size. The book provides an overview of each individual year as well as each decade of the award. Over the years the Academy Awards have over-rated some turkeys and ignored some movies now considered classics. The Academy has had a tendency, over the years, to focus on five to eight movies a year for 95% of all nominees. It certainly seems that it is a popularity contest more than an artistic examination. However, it's still a fairly reliable source for finding good movies of the past and that's what I use it for.

4 out of 5 stars An Educational & Interesting Read.......2005-09-16

This book is chock full of facts about everything to do with the Academy and it's evolving from nothing to what it is today. It tells how and who started it, and how the different categories for Oscars were added as the years went by. The first 2 chapters or so overwhelm you with dry details which make it tedious reading; at least that is how I felt about it.
The rest of the book's chapters go year by year telling you all the nominations and winners of Oscars in all the different categories, and show you dozens of good pictures of the stars. You can also read the acceptance speeches given in the book by the stars that won Academy Awards.
There also is a section that lists the names of all the stars that have won 2 or more Academy Awards. This is what I really liked. This is what I bought the book for.
It is a huge book to read, so just take your time and read a little bit at a time.
I'm glad I bought it because I am a movie fan and have learned from it; and can always refer back to it when I want to find something out.

4 out of 5 stars THE cohesive book of maps WW1--totally indispensable .......2005-10-21

I'll start by saying these are the best maps covering WW1--and have been the one resource which has really enhanced my understanding of an often confusing, militarily at least (particularly on the Eastern front), conflict. Great maps of the palestine, mesopotamian, and gallipoli campaigns. More maps on the Caucausus, Armenian, and Far East would have been helpful.

The achille's heel of this volume is its title--most of this book has little relevance to contemporary US military activity (1900-1918)--the book covers WW1 exclusively a war the US didn't materially begin fighting until the spring of 1918, that is to say it's last 6 months.

So if you are looking for coverage of the operations against insurgents in the Phillipines, or the punitive raid into Mexico, keep looking. This book should be labeled the West Point Atlas of the Great War, and if that is what you're looking for you need to snatch up a used copy of this otherwise-5-star-book.

If this book was going to cover so many campaigns unrelated to the American military I wish there would have been some maps covering other wars of this period-the Russo-Japanese and the Turkish Balkan wars.

Still an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars For previous reviews..........2005-02-23

In a response to a previous review, this book is a reprint of the original which contained 1900-1953. That is why people are mentioning WWII. For some reason, the publishers decided only to have WWI in this volume. I own the two original volumes, printed in 1959, which were used by USMA cadets. Personally, I prefer the original books because they create a touch of actual history because of their use. They are amazing books which any military nut can spend hours enjoying. For anyone who thinks these books are boring; maybe you should move to Canada, because the battles in this book won you your freedom! :) ENJOY!

1 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone.......2001-11-16

This book is probably very good for a student studying war, but it's by no means an interesting coffee table type of conversational piece. It's more like a textbook , not not for me, and not for you either, I suspect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book About War.......2001-09-03

If you are looking for a coffee table book about war, stop here. There is no need for you to continue. This one is as good as they come. However, this is not a book on West Point. (for that, I recommend "West Point", by Norman Thomas Remick). The title is somewhat confusing in that respect. But, don't let that stop you from looking at this great job done by the Dept. of Military Art and Engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Confused by Reviews.......2000-05-26

Look I'm not actually reviewing this book - but I do have some comments about the reviews:

If the date is 1900-1918 in the title, how does this cover Bismarck's Germany, which would be before 1900? Similarly how serious is the league of nations coverage (which I would guess would be 1918-1939 approximately)

One of the reviews mentions WWII - but again, how does this fit in the 1900-1918 range?

Book Description

At the Academy Awards, the answer to who wore what matters just as much as who won what. Focusing on the actresses nominated for Oscars and a few seminal presenters, Made for Each Other traces the fashion trends of the widely watched Oscar ceremony. From the splendor of Vivien Leigh to the spare war-era chic of Ingrid Bergman, from the arresting glamor of Marlene Dietrich to Barbra Streisand’s daring sequined Arnold Scaasi pantsuit, Bronwyn Cosgrave delivers a revealing account of the entertainers who have helped shape the look of the Academy Awards and the international couturiers and behind-the-scenes fashion players on whom they’ve relied. Delving deep into the partnerships that have defined Oscar fashion—Claudette Colbert and Travis Banton; Grace Kelly and Edith Head; Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy; Elizabeth Taylor and Helen Rose; Liza Minelli and Halston; Cher and Bob Mackie; Jodie Foster and Georgio Armani; Nicole Kidman and John Galliano; Hilary Swank and Randolph Duke—Cosgrave demonstrates that from the beginning fashion was as integral to Oscar night as the films it celebrated. In a package befitting the glamorous subject, Made for Each Other includes previously unseen sketches of Oscar dresses by legendary couturiers, rare vintage photographs, and fashion illustrations of key dresses created especially for this book. For fashionistas and film buffs alike, Made for Each Other is a must have for anyone interested in this perfect pairing.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating account of Oscars fashion.......2007-03-20

I bought this book assuming it was sort of a glossy, coffee table photography book. Imagine my surprise when it came and I realized there was more text than photos! This turned out to be a good thing, though, as the book is a fascinating, almost scholarly anthropological account of Academy Awards fashion. You'll find yourself being amazed at not only the hoops the designers jump through to please the actresses, but at the level of minutae and detail that goes into designing (and then sewing) a dress that will be viewed by literally billions of people. There are hair-raising stories of dresses gone wrong, a good, long look at the vintage gowns some actresses have chosen to wear, and a lot of information on the actual construction of these unique gowns. It's well worth it for the Oscars aficionado.

3 out of 5 stars AND THE NOMINEES ARE..............2007-03-15

Since its inception in 1929 the hyped and hallowed Oscar ceremony has been as much about fashions as it has been about films. Who is wearing what and by whom as she promenades down the red carpet? Wonder just how many of us would rather look at the dresses than the presentations. One who definitely has her eye on the gowns is Bronwyn Cosgrave.

A former editor for British Vogue Cosgrove covered the Academy Awards for the BBC and authored Costume and Fashion: A Complete History. She now offers another complete history, this time of the garb chosen by both presenters and nominees for Hollywood's biggest night.

We learn that the first actress Academy Award winner was Janet Gaynor who "Waltzed wide-eyed in her dress that stopped short on her knee." Undoubtedly a far cry from the sparkling provocative number designed by Bob Mackie for Cher. Mackie, sometimes called "the sultan of sequins" or the "rajah of rhinestones" was a bit concerned about the outre appearance that Cher had requested, even to asking "Don't you think this is kind of upstaging the person you are giving the award to?" As the world now knows, she was determined to "let them see that everything still looks good."

Obviously, looking good is what it's all about. Marlene Dietrich caused quite a furor in 1951 when she strolled on stage in a Christian Dior creation that looked "Airbrushed on."

The ceremony is also about payoff - in 2003 Nicole Kidman struck a deal with Chanel for seven million. Her contractual obligations included the wearing of gowns by Chanel's chief designer Karl Lagerfeld to gala events, such as the Oscars.

Richly illustrated, gossipy and unputdownable "Made For Each Other" gives us an insiders ear and eye to haute Hollywood. The 3-star rating is due to the lack of proper editing.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and edited........2007-03-02

This book is very weak; it is poorly written and badly (if at all) copy edited.
I would not recommend this for anyone who is used to reading well written, grammatically
clean, well researched work. It is an infuriating and exhausting read because of
all the typos and all the sentences that just do not make any sense.
It makes me wonder about the quality of the research and anecdotal comments.
It is shocking that it was published and internationally distributed.

4 out of 5 stars A good read but full of typos.......2007-02-28

I agree with a previous review that this book would have benefited from a thorough editing. Michael Kors for Celine designed Rene Russo's costumes in The Thomas Crowne Affair, not Randolph Duke. Gwyneth Paltrow won in 1999, not 1991. Hogs and Heifers, where Julia Roberts danced on the bar and left her bra nailed to the ceiling is in the Meatpacking District, not Tribeca. Nothing too serious, but irritating nonetheless. There are some great stories told here and the later part of the book that deals with the jockeying for position of designers to dress particular actresses is fascinating. But where are some of the more famous Oscar flops and hits? Kim Bassinger's self-designed dress. Demi Moore's hot pants? Halley Berry's Reem Acra? Kate Winset's huge necklace after Titanic? Uma's milkmaid dress? Another 30 pages would have been appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars Made For Everyone.......2007-02-25

Wow! This book is such a great a read! Did you know that Miuccia Prada did not design Una Thurman's Prada Oscar dress? That Bette Davies picked up her Best Actress Oscar in an old film costume? That Louise Rainer wore her nightgown to the ceremony? The revelations just keep on coming. Bronwyn Cosgrave's masterpiece charts the secret history of all the major Oscar dresses we all love and remember. This book really has to become the difinative volume on the subject. It's fantastically gossipy and wondefully informative, a real joy to read. I could not put it down!

The pictures and illustrations are stunning. Cosgrave has tracked down many never before published sketches froma range of designers from Dior to Dolce & Gabbana. This really is made for anyone who loves both film and fashion!

Mark Twain visited West Point at least ten times, delighting the cadets with stories, jokes, and speeches. Fascinated with West Point, Mark Twain mingled with cadets in the barracks, visited classrooms, and observed cavalry and artillery drills and parades. He formed lasting friendships with many cadets, faculty, and Superintendents. Philip W. Leon discusses each visit and traces the influence of West Point on A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and other writings. A special chapter explores Mark Twain's response to some incidents of cadet hazing. Presenting archival material such as diaries, memoirs, official records, contemporary newspaper accounts, and previously unpublished correspondence, Leon illuminates the close ties of America's favorite storyteller and its premier military academy.

          Book Description

Contemporary academic discourse is filled with the word "perform". Nestled among a variety of prefixes and suffixes (re-, post-, -ance, -ivity?), the term functions as a vehicle for a host of inquiries. This development is intriguing and complex for students, artists, and scholars of performance and theater. By examining the history of theater studies and related institutions and comparing the very different disciplinary interpretations and developments that led to this engagement, this study offers ways of placing performance theory and performance studies in context.

          5 out of 5 stars Step-By-Step Ballet Class.......2005-10-12

Good illustrations and text especially for the beginner. It was too basic for my daughter who has had 5 years of ballet classes. I recommend it for the 1-2 year ballet student.

5 out of 5 stars A great help in my dancing.......1999-10-11

Since I come from a family that moves around a lot, sometimes it's hard to find a serious quality dance studio. This book was a tremendous help in keeping me toned and in gear. It gives me the help I need to reach the height of my aptitude.

5 out of 5 stars "Great explanations, truly easy to follow" ~Julia Hulia.......1999-07-09

This book is great for the young ballet dancer. I just started the Royal Academy of Dance at Grade 3, and I wanted to catch up a little, so I got this book and I understand so much more in class! It's great, easy explanations, side reminders, ("Tummy in!") and also character dance tips.

              Book Description

African American artists Hale Woodruff and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet both worked in Paris before they become colleagues in Atlanta. When Woodruff began teaching drawing and painting at Atlanta University in 1931 he opened a new era of art instruction. After Prophet arrived to teach sculpture in 1934, the art offerings expanded exponentially. By the mid-1930s, the Coordinated Art Program at Atlanta University Center was the place in the southeast for African Americans to study art. This generously illustrated book considers the artists' lives and their impact as teachers and mentors. Hale Woodruff (1900-1980) was born in Cairo, Illinois. After briefly attending the Herron Art School and the Art Institute of Chicago, he took a job at the Senate Avenue YMCA in Indianapolis, where he met some of the leading figures of the time, including W. E. B. DuBois, Charles S. Johnson, Walter White, and Countee Cullen. After winning several prizes for his drawings, he left for Paris in 1927. When he joined the newly formed Atlanta University Center, he viewed teaching as his chance to impart a sense of cultural and social responsibility to his students and encouraged them to portray black experience in America honestly. The annual exhibition he initiated became the most important national exhibition for African American artists. Nancy Elizbeth Prophet (1890-1960) was born and raised in Warwick, Rhode Island, and in 1918 became the first African American to graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1922 she went to Paris, where she studied under the acclaimed sculptor Victor Joseph Jean Ambrose Segoffin and received the prestigious Otto Kahn and Greenough prizes. She was associated with the New Negro Movement, which called on African American artists to learn from African practitioners and to develop their own cultural style. Her arrival in Atlanta added the three-dimensional component necessary for the Atlanta University Center to initiate a degree-granting program in art.
