I cannot say enough about this trompe l'oeil artist. I am a complete fan and have learned a ton from both this book and his book on trompe l'oeil panels.

This book is great for rendering faux marbles and some woods, but as a professional decorative painter, I was very disapointed with the level of artistry when it came to fieldstone, tortoise shell, and some others. It looked totally amaturish. Also, if you use watered down paint, as is recommended, you will have problems clearcoating without streaking your work. I have always found the use of glazing compounds a much better solution.

This book is a wealth of information and ideas for my mural and faux business. The richness and unique faux wood and marble and not only beautiful to look at but the color samples and instructions are very good. The book demonstrates a very high quality of work and creativeness. It is a great book for ideas and resource material for the artist who does faux and mural work. It is a must for your reference library.
Excellent for experienced decorative painters.......1997-12-15
Originally published in French as a series of six books, `The Handbook of Painted Decoration' by Yannick Guegan and Roger Le Puil is an excellent reference book for experienced decorative painters. Yannick Guegan who authors the chapters on marble, wood, friezes and ornament has been in the business for thirty five years, has won numerous awards and is an excellent artist and teacher. Roger Le Puil, author of the chapters on basic patinas, finishes and forgotten techniques, is also an award winner, has painted extensively and has been involved with the French Association for Painting Training and the Paris Institute of Decorative Painting. The book consists of four hundred and fifty full colour pages of information, step by step demonstrations, and inspiring examples. This is a dense book; a lazy Sunday morning browse will only get you half way through it. Traditional European themes and techniques are emphasised with updated techniques for modern water based mediums. The finishes demonstrated are too numerous to be easily reviewed but I will say that the marbles are unique and dramatic, and the wood graining is fabulous. The Trompe L'oeil techniques demonstrated are basically architectural with a large section on fabric and drapery. I am prejudice but this book is beautiful enough to make a coffee table book for architects, designers, and artists of all kinds. It was a blind buy for me and I am not disappointed in the least by the book or by my first buying experience with Amazon. The book is well worth the price if you can learn from books and have enough experience to follow the examples.

I found the book to be a wonderful asset. Maureen McNaughton is a wonderful artist and a good teacher. Her skills carry through this book in both areas. It is a totally different type of decorative painting.

This is the BEST book for step-by-step instructional floral painting I have ever seen! Each step is photographed & explained in detail so even the novice painter can follow & learn how to paint flowers like the experts. By far the most comprehensive floral painting book to date! Great ideas, poor execution.......2002-04-02
The projects in this book are definitely cool. However, I encountered two substantial problems.
First, it was difficult to find some of the supplies. I live in a metropolitan area (2 million people) and could only find one place that sold liming wax. I spent an hour on the phone calling places looking for it. I finally found a supplier 40 miles away.
Second, the colors in the book are quite different than in person. I added the specified amount of artist's paint to create the terracota fresco. The color was suppose to be orangish. It turned out to be pink. Let me tell you, my husband did not appreciate that at all.
My recommendation, take her ideas, but don't use her colors.
Great Value, makes a great housewarming gift.......2000-07-28
This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to decorate or redecorate their home with style. It is great value because it is literally packed with techniques and ideas to suit anyone's taste. Most effects are surprisingly easy to create.
The book starts out with a through explanation of materials. This includes color photos of all the tools, as well as charts with great information on mixing and thinning paint types, primers, undercoats, solvents, glazes, varnishes, sealants, and metallic finishes. Information about toxicity, uses and whether it should be used indoors or out is included as well. There are even several excellent charts on preparing almost any surface for painting.
Numerous techniques for painting walls including colorwashing, sponging, dragging, rag rolling, stippling, limewashing, dry brushing, fade-away washing, loose-glaze, mock and rubbed back plaster are included. Effects such as Fresco, Mediterranean and Egyptian are also covered as well as creating borders, stone blocking and making distressed plaster patterns.
Then wood effects such as aging, spattering, graining, crackling, combing, and staining are covered. The Scandinavian and Shaker color pallets and styles are demonstrated here too. Stone finishes such as marbling, lapis lazuli, sandstone, porphyry, granite and terracotta follow. Then there are metal finishes including patina, verdigris, rust, lead, iron and bronzing. Finally, lacquer, tortoiseshell, shagreen, leather, stenciling, and gilding techniques are shown.
Most of the projects use latex or acrylic paint, only a few use oils. Step-by-step directions are given for each of these techniques or effects. Close-up photos show the each style in a few different colors and recipes are given for each one. Some styles have pictures of finished rooms or objects done with them.
Since printing accurate colors is tricky and there are so many variables in materials and surfaces, I know that results can vary. I would recommend experimenting on a small scale and tweaking the recipe to get things the color you want. All in all this is fabulous and inspirational book at an excellent price for anyone who wants to do more than brush on off-the-shelf paint.

I do decorative finishes quite often, and while I have not actually followed any of the paint recipes to the letter, they have provided a jumping-off point for many projects. A nice sourcebook w/ photos of different kinds of tools, pigments, etc. The use of UK measurements and paint terms could be confusing for some people. Overall a very good reference for the serious or semi-serious decorative painter...
Lovely book, but where is my terra cotta stone wall?.......1999-05-20
I have been enchanted with this book since I first saw and acquired it a few years ago. I have followed only a few recipes, partly because it has been difficult to find some of the ingredients in my area. My most pressing complaint, however, echoes comments by an earlier reviewer regarding the accuracy of the recipes. I am in the middle of a faux stone block wall that calls for a base coat and three glaze coats, followed by veining and shadows--a lot of work. It was clear after the first glaze coat that my wall would never be remotely close to the lovely terra cotta color identified (p. 94) as "the basic recipe". Help, Liz, where are you?

This book had many ideas for various paint effects to help me choose how to paint my bathroom and livingroom. I choose a drag effect for the bathroom and a faux for the livingroom. I was a first time painter and this book shows step by step how to do it correct the first time. I made no mistakes! This book shared excellent unique ideas! HIGHLY reccommended!

This book is packed with innovative ideas for simple paint makeovers. I normally do not involve myself with painting tasks and even my own projects turned out nicely.
The only thing that might have helped is more of an explaination on what kind of and where to purchase some of the paints and quality brushes.
This is a BUY book. It would make a wonderful gift for people who like to work with there hands around the home.

This is a wonderful book with a lot of different projects, techniques and styles. It is great for anyone wanting to add special touches and effects to their home.
The book starts out overview of materials including color photos of all the tools you will need. There is also guide to mixing paints and a great chart on various materials for painting. There are many wonderful effects that can be achieved by adding your own pigments or otherwise modifying standard off the shelf paints. Numerous techniques follow including colorwashing, dry brushing, rubbing off, sponging, graining, aging, stippling, combing, stucco, embossing, stenciling, stamping and creating a few stone finishes. There are also instructions for painting on glass and using masks or resists such as wax.
Over 25 projects are included for walls, floors, windows, furniture and accessories as well. Some projects include striped Greek vases, checkerboard wall, slot-machine counter front, and colorwashed flowers, daisy-strewn floorboards, cork-tile games floor, and a mosaic border. My favorite projects were the whimsical window frame, fossil tabletop and a beautiful Japanese style fabric screen. There are also some great design motifs such as shells, artichokes, and boats. Conveniently, small templates, which you can enlarge, are included for all the projects.

Not what I expected..........2006-07-06
Step by Step Fabric Painting was different from what I expected. I needed something that didn't require me to be an artist already. There are things in the book that I can use, but probably not until I can acquire a little more expertise at drawing. I thought I was getting a beginner's guide to painting on fabric. This is painting on fabric, but is geared toward an "artist" who wishes to paint on fabric. I hope I have made myself clear. Not a bad book, just not the book that I needed. It did have great instructions on materials needed, how to stencil, and prepare your fabric. But the designs were too intricate for me to even attempt. Hope this helps someone.

Jim Sprankle is a world class master waterfowl carver and painter. He has published a number of remarkable books and video tapes to help others with their carvings. This painting book is outstanding. Jim has a unique method of painting wood carvings with thinly applied washes of acrylic paints, masterfully blended. This book shows in color how he paints several species of waterfowl, step by step. He even gives the formulas for the correct mixtures of paint. The book is an invaluable source of information for anyone wishing to paint waterfowl carvings.

This is a terrific resource for getting you started on trompe l'oeil stencilling. The book has MANY photographs and drawings to illustrate technique and finished objects and, after several introductory chapters that focus on the use of stencils and paint effects, is organized into a series of projects. Within the context of these seven specific projects the author describes various techniques, such as using a multi-overlay stencil, shading, stippling, creating woodgrain, pitfalls to avoid, freeform stencilling, etc. Each project is accompanied by a pattern that can be enlarged on a photocopier and then used to make the stencils you'll need to complete the project. The projects described are a rose border, teddy bear, keys, grapevine, shelf with crockery, umbrella plant and marble fruit bowl.

WOW! This book packed so much in for so little. It is perfect for any one intrested in Tromp L'oeil and feels they can't draw or paint freehand. If you can draw this will expand your library in a positive way. There are over 150 pictures all step by step lots of stencils to cut out most have overlays wich make the picture look handpainted, since the overlays eliminate the bridges. A lot of fun will be had with this book
