3 out of 5 stars Good but flawed.......2007-08-08

I agree with several of the reviewers here. As a "purist" I object to models that don't start with a square, of which there are many here. I am also bothered by measurements that do not arise from the creases themselves (eg "fold into thirds".) Finally, Lang jumps from very easy to very advanced, with virtually nothing in-between (and uses harder folding sequences than neccessary IMO, Montroll achieves similar complexity in his finished models with far less difficulty.)
If you are willing to look past these objections, the finished models themselves are frequently amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Advanced origami book.......2005-09-28

The author of "The Complete Book of Origami" has become notorious for producing some of the most advanced origami models in the literature and this book contains a range of models which cannot be considered anything but difficult. Most of the pieces will not be possible from ordinary paper but will require either foil or very thin bank weight paper to work well. Wet folding would also be suitable for some of the models though the diagrams for the elephant sail into a patch of fog when making its behind!

Be prepared to spend some hours making each piece and you may well find yourself starting over again several times until a series of folding procedures becomes clear.

That said the book contains some excellent models - I have always liked the Cuckoo Clock and the Viking Ship, and can confirm that the action pieces really do work.

The diagrams are hand drawn rather than computerised which may explain the level of verbal instruction; however some of the sets of folds are very complex and the verbal instructions provide that much needed extra to understand what is going on.

This is a book for the seasoned folder and most paper folders who have reached the high intermediate to advanced skill level will enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars a weird and expensive book.......2002-11-17

at the first reading this one looks interesting but don't be fooled!
this book is filled with strange, ugly and really difficult models with at least only four or five good looking ones
the 3D section is a waste of ime, with poorly designed models
except for the scorpion the cicada and the tarantula(the challenge of my life)
the other cool part are the musicians, but the pianist is just impossible to be done,as the other advanced models, like the cuckoo clock
well I think that's better you chase some models on the web than buy this book

5 out of 5 stars Quality Origami.......2001-12-10

This is a great book-but only if you are already familair with origami. You cannot simply look at the diagrams, as Lang has made the text descriptions almost more important than the visual descriptions. The cuckoo clock is by far one of the most advanced models I've ever seen in a book-but there are some easier models as well. Most people will be able to find SOMEthing to make, but I would only suggest this book for a NON-beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive models not for beginners.......2000-11-14

The models in this book are among those that most impress my friends when I make them. Nobody else has a full grand piano, with moving pianist. Certainly it requires a piece of paper of unusual dimensions, but Lang still holds true to the artifice of Western origami: no cuts.

The models in this book certainly cannot be considered for beginners, but the cuckoo clock alone is worth the price of the book. Be prepared to use some tweezers, though. :-)

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good but not necessarily for the beginner.......2003-08-17

This is a good book for inspiration of ideas, however, it's not a step by step guide. Like just about every book that I've seen so far on paper sculpture, they skip crucial steps which will lose the layperson. Even I had to reread the book serveral times only to go about it on my own. The authors would do better to give a more thoruogh explanation of a work than fill the book with artist showcases. I am sick of picking up coffee table books. I want a book that gives time on paper quality and tools, and techniques first and foremost.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but not for beginners.......2003-03-23

A remarkable book showing what can be accomplished in paper sculpture, but definetly not for beginners. It shows some step-by-step projects, but not really the technique used. Good for inspiration, but it assumes that you already know what you are doing. Good reference when you are up and running.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2002-01-22

I consider myself an intermediate since I started with Clive Stevens' Fun with Paper Sculpture--I didn't really learn much more than I already knew. However, this book is suitable for anyone from a rank beginner to polished professional. I picked up some new techniques and discovered new types of paper and paints to use in my work. I've gotten the most use from the artist galleries beacuse they spur my own creativity to no end! I never tire of looking at the gorgeous pieces and find myself reading this book from cover to cover every now and then.

I don't draw very well, but I've found that I can easily build flowers and other objects from component shapes. The professional quality of featured projects spur me to do my very best to make my own stuff as polished and professional as possible. You'll be amazed with what you can create with little more than white glue and some cut up paper. There's even a lobster project that can be made from cereal boxes or toilet paper tubes! Great book, geat hobby, great price.

5 out of 5 stars Relief-Style Paper Sculpture.......2001-11-12

I liked this book's diversity of relief-style paper sculptures. By relief-style I mean paper that is cut and then folded, rolled, mounted, etc. onto a flat surface. Other types of paper sculpture, such as cast paper sculpture are not covered. If you are interested in other ways to use paper I recommend the book The Art of Sculpting with Paper by Michael G. Lafosse.

This book is a combination gallery of each artist's work plus one project each artist did step-by-step demonstrating their techniques. The beginning chapter gives an overview of the basic techniques every relief-paper sculptor uses and types of paper suitable for relief paper-sculpting. It then launches into the artist demo/gallery format. The nice thing about the step-by-step demos is that you can copy that project for practice if you wish (although patterns are not provided so you would need to recreate the pattern on your own.) Each step-by-step demo is definitely of professional quality. Most, if not all, of the artists featured are graphic illustrators who work on these kind of projects as a living for various commercial clients. Therefore, you can expect that the art displayed inside is of similar quality to the cover photo.

Using this book I've begun a small project that I designed myself. It's definitely fun but I can see how it could become more time consumming. One thing I would've liked to have seen in this book was an estimate of the time it took for each artist to complete their project (not including the very initial sketch design). This would give me a better estimate of how long a similar project might be for me (although I'd estimate about 1/2 to 2/3 more time since I'm a beginner). I've enjoyed this book so much I plan to get the sequel. It's an excellent introduction to this style of paper art.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful galleries, Some great projects.......2001-03-18

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in paper sculpture. Each project is followed by a wonderful gallery of similar work by the demonstrating artist. These make the book worthwhile for anyone who appreciates the medium even if they don't do the work themselves.

The book starts out with a brief introduction to paper sculpture and overview of paper sculpture techniques. Nine projects, each directed by a different artist, follow. Though the instructions are arranged step-by-step with photos, there are some advanced techniques involved and some experience and talent would be needed to create some of the more elaborate projects. There are also no templates, so making a project that looks exactly like the one in the book it almost impossible.

I didn't try all the projects, but did enjoy making the sun. It is fairly simple and looks so great using marbled papers. I would have liked to try the goldfish and the swan shown on the cover, but I felt they were a bit to time-consuming and complex for me. Other projects, like the Liberty Bell and too cute chicken wreath, just didn't perk my interest.

All in all, I'm glad I bought the book. The artwork examples are great and have inspired me to try some things on my own such as butterflies, fish and landscapes. I like that they list all the artists with contact information, awards they've earned and clients they've served. A list of schools that offer professional instruction is also a nice bonus.

3 out of 5 stars Uninspired Origami Book.......2003-12-19

The tittle says "ultimate" but the contents are far from it. There's a modest selection of traditional models and several weak original models. The diagrams are clear and easy to follow. This book is geared to the beginner but is so limited in it's scope and quality of artistic expression that it does nothing to kindle an interest in origami." Origami Treasure Chest" is a great book for beginners, with loads of fun models.Try "Easy Origami" by Montrol for similar models, or better yet get Honda's "The World of Origami", perhaps the best origami book available.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter book with easy and more complicated projects.......2001-12-10

Easy step by step instructions. Color pictures for each step with written descriptions. Comes complete with 2 sizes of paper in many colors and one pre-folded example. Starts with simple folds, includes action projects and more complicated folds. Explains the basic folds, and common bases such as Kite, Bird, Waterbomb and more. Lots of fun right from the start.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting!.......2007-10-03

This book is not what I expected. Instead of a collection of origami patterns, it's more of a collection of folding trivia, history, and folding projects, everything from paper cranes to how to put a cloth diaper on a baby.

It is set up A-Z, with at least one entry for every letter of the alphabet. If you are looking strictly for a book of patterns, this is not for you. If you want to find out about the history and quirky side of origami, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars love this book from my childhood!.......2006-11-10

I had this book when I was 5 or 6 and absolutely adored it. I lost it and found interest in it again when I sat for an origami class and was reminded of it. The instructions are really easy to follow and there are great models for all ages.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected........2006-03-02

The directions in this book can be hard to follow. I don't think there are 100 great projects in this book. Maybe 10? This book is pretty disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars What I needed!.......2006-01-29

I bought this book to learn some simple things to fold in a Kindergarten I used to work in, and it was an instant success! I was sat at the table for hours folding frogs and boats to the kids, and they seemed to really enjoy the creations! This is a great book for parents and pre-school teachers, and it is a great way to learn a little bit about geometry too. Some of the models are difficult to understand, but folding is about taking your time. A great way of finding a corner of peace in our rush-hour lifestyle!

5 out of 5 stars An reference rather than a book of diagrams.......2005-09-09

If you're looking for nice models to fold, this is not the book you'll want. Instead, if you have some experience with folding and would like to understand the more advanced books and articles you may find on the Internet, you will appreciate the information provided by Complete Origami. As a glossary, it defines most words and concepts of Origami, and the projects complement nicely the definitions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best origami book out there........2003-09-12

This is easily my favorite book on origami. All the diagrams are clear, the models are very detailed, and more importantly, all of them are an awful lot of fun to make, and very rewarding. While it has models from the whole range of difficulty levels, it focuses primarily on the advanced folder.

A little bit of history- my parents bought me this book about 15 years ago, I couldn't have been more than 8 at the time. I had dabbled a little bit in origami before then, but this is the book that got me hooked. I still have that copy, ragged at the edges, pages falling out, but still as fulfulling as it always was. I just can't stop singing the praises of this book- it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate!.......2001-09-30

5 out of 5 stars Animal Origami for the Enthusiast.......2001-04-07

This is a great book, not quite for beginners, though. In this book, you work your way up through the angel fish (easiest) to the lobster (hardest). The book has great step-by-step intructions which helps you create a model with great detail. This is one of the best origami books I've ever gotten and I definatly recommend it if you're really into origami.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Montroll books.......2000-12-27

If you want some wonderful challenging and detailed animal origami to fold, you won't be disappointed with this book! It has quite a few of my favorite models. All the ones pictured on the cover are great...I particularly like the wonderful detail on the frog, with eyes and toes. The lobster is another personal favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Great looking models.......1999-06-24

In 1985 I bought this at a book fair when I was 5 years old, and I still think that it is one of the best books on origami out there. The version that I have contains a few confusing instructions (which may have been corrected in later editions), but they can be worked around thanks to the well drawn pictures.

    What is 3D origami?

This, our second title in the well-received "3D Origami" series, invites you to learn an innovative approach to the craft of making authentic origami. Each of the intricate projects begins with a small rectangular piece of paper folded into a tiny, "magical" triangle. By combining lots of such
"magical" triangles in various positions, you can build up ornamental objects that are solid and three dimensional. It's so much fun you won't believe what you have created before you know it.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars This one's a classic........2004-05-03

This book was originally published in the 70s under another title. My High School library had a copy.
I'd found the simpler models to be quite nice, as a beginner at the time. The more complex models were absolutely eye popping, and gave me something to aspire to.
Five years after grad., I'd tried to buy a copy, and found it out of print. I was glad to see it's come back.
The mermaid is very cool, and seems to be floating through a tuft of seaweed, and the fully rigged ship is a truly
majestic vessel. The unicorn in this book is one of my favorite models.
Don't pass up this book, especially at this price

5 out of 5 stars Best Value for Money.......2003-01-07

This is one of the best. 30+ model in a thin and inexpensive volumn. It's really step-by-step if you fold the model page-by-page. I recommend beginners not to skip. It really like an exercise book. For advance folders, there are many great models to fold. Because of this step-by-step approach the number of diagrams are kept to the minimum. Beginner picking models (not from the start) will find this a difficult book to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the advance folders.......2003-01-06

Although I have started folding for about 3 months, I would consider myself as an advance folder having folded models such as Voyer's horse, pegasus, Brill's elephant, Ronald Koh's rocking horse, etc. The first time I came across this book, the cover say "step by step", so I skip it. During my last visit to the local book store I browsed through it by chance and was pleasantly suprised. 30+ models and mostly advance, for just US$4.95, what a great deal! The diagrams are not "step by step", but adequate for advance folder, it does save a lot of space.

2 out of 5 stars for VERY exiprienced folder, ready to fight for each step.......2001-07-12

Well, the book is ..., contains interesting models that you will not find anywhere else, BUT: Title absolutly misleading. Even thought it contains several easy models, majority of interesting models are very complex. Even if you could handle it, be aware that: Diagrams are awful and I would like to emphasize it: every model contains a steps that are difficult to follow , from misleading to sometimes erroneous, imcomplete - some very complex steps are just sketched and you will not even see a result picture on next one, text description of steps is very pure. May be that is what autor wanted to say in the title: you will fight for every step to find out what is drawn here. I would recomend it to buy only for VERY expirienced folder who loves to solve puzzles.

4 out of 5 stars Great models despite the misleading title........2001-01-02

Good things with Origami Step-By-Step: 1) it's very inexpensive, and 2) it has a good number of fantastic models the likes of which would be very difficult to find in another anthology. Patricia Crawford's designs are innovative and original not only in form but also in content. A few of the more original models include a birdbath (with birds), a squirrel on a log, a mermaid swimming along seaweed, and Christ praying on the Mount of Olives(!). Her other models are perhaps slightly more characteristic of origami -- cat, kangaroo, unicorn, scorpion, three-masted sailing ship -- but are also very well-conceived.

A few caveats of Origami Step-By-Step: 1) the overutilization of foil-backed paper. The intro states that the tensile strength of foil is actually a necessity for many of the models. I have not tried folding all of these models yet, but I suspect you may be able to get similar results using wet-folding techniques. Still, I would have liked to have seen less models that depended on the malleability of the paper for its effects. Also 2) the instructions are anything but "step-by-step." In most of these models, many steps are combined into single steps, making a first-time fold very difficult if you don't already understand the mechanics of the folding. These models rely heavily on pre-creasing, and you can expect to see the first step of a given model to be a square with numerous dotted lines criss-crossing everywhere indicating the creases, but not the folds that lead to said creases. Needless to say, this book is not one for beginners, and even intermediate to advanced folders may be stymied by the lack of instruction.

Still, this book has some models you won't find anywhere else, so it's definitely worth a look. Just don't expect to go through it in a day.

2 out of 5 stars Paperart: The Art of sculpting paper/ Michael G. Lafosse.......2002-12-18

I bought this book based on the reveiw given by Hamsterdance. While it is a beautiful book to look at, it does not actually provide all the steps needed to take you from the beginning of a project all the way through the end. Partial explanations are given about how the artists does this or that. Other then oragami, neither graphic, nor explanitory descriptive is given in how paper is actually sculpted, casted etc.. If you want a coffee table book, this is it. If you want to learn how to sculp, or cast paper, keep looking.

This is a wonderful book filled with over 15 projects including folded paper (origami), assembled paper (paper sculpture) and art created with paper pulp. Beautiful and inspirational galleries after each project show you more advanced artwork using similar techniques and opening your eyes to endless possibilities.

Each project includes a materials list and is demonstrated step by step with photos and sometimes illustrations. Helpful tips for each are also included. Though the instructions are good, there are no templates and some artistic talent or experience is necessary for many of the projects. My favorite projects include a washi doll, twisted paper box, and a pulp painting.

In the back there is a nice list of suppliers and websites as well as a few organizations and educational programs. There is also a directory of artists with contact information. If you want a sampling of the paper art or just need inspiration this is the book to get.
