The biblia.......2006-03-13
This is a book that everyone who works with water analysis have to buy.
Easly Understood by Geochemists.......2006-02-20
The "Standard Methods" is very well understood even for those in the non-Chemistry area that deals with environmental chemistry/geochemistry of natural waters. Besides the analytical work, many important aspects related to sampling and data interpretation are there. The 2005 Edition makes these tasks much easier.
Book Description
In this perceptive and revealing study, Mary Waters explores the "reinvention" of ethnicity in the lives of the grandchildren and great grandchildren of European immigrants, asking how their ethnic heritage is lived, maintained, and celebrated. Through in-depth interviews with sixty third and fourth generation white ethnics in suburban California and Pennsylvania, the author discovers a surprisingly resilient sense of ethnicity among people who could reasonably label themselves simply "American."
Mary Waters' research brings to light a fascinating history of American immigration, revealing aspects of a shared culture and ideology and the unique ways in which ethnic identities fulfill very American needs. Describing the "symbolic ethnicity" of later generation white ethnics as a quintessential American phenomenon, she argues that ethnicity has retained its importance in our lives precisely because it allows people to reconcile the contradictory American values of choice, individuality, and community.
In addition to her exploration of the symbolic ethnicity of later generation middle-class whites, Mary Waters addresses its cost to society, contrasting it with the optionless ethnicity of non-white Americans. Her conclusions in Ethnic Options constitute an invaluable contribution to our understanding of contemporary American life.

Ethnic Options.......2000-06-14
Mary Waters provides a provoking analysis and presentation of ethnic identity in American society. How people come to "choose" to identify in terms of ethnicity through influences of surnames, cultural practices and even diet are essential to understanding race/ethnicity. While the focus of the book is on Caucasians, I would consider Ethnic Options as a valid source for those looking to explore issues of ethnic identity.

When Mary Osborne won the longboard contest in MTV’s Surf Girls, she immediately became the strong and beautiful figurehead for a nation of surfing women. Now, here’s Osborne’s introduction to the sport, the only guide for women who surf, and, more importantly, for those women who have always dreamed of paddling out beyond the breakers and catching the ideal wave.
Osborne is a master of the slickest sport. Here she shares her wisdom with readers, on everything from putting on a wet suit (do wear your bathing suit underneath, ladies) to catching the first wave (don’t start too far out). There are tips on choosing a board, carrying it, knowing which boards need wax, finding a surfing buddy, figuring out what that leash is for and how it works, and finding the perfect spot.
Sister Surfer is more than a technical manual filled with gorgeous images. It is also an inspirational guide, a handbook to freeing the spirit and overcoming the barriers of the world and of the self. This unique book, perfectly timed to ride the growing wave that is women and surfing, will appeal to anyone who loves the deep blue.

A great source of inspiration.......2005-12-28
As a younger woman and recent breast cancer survivor, I found this book to be a great source of healing. It was validating and uplifting to read testimonies from other women that faced challenges in their lives. Sister Surfer reminded me of what's important in life: fun in the sun! After reading this book, I had my first surf lesson and had a blast. I can't wait to hit the waves again!
Surfs up, Courage up.......2005-12-16
Sister Surfer is a great inspiration. I picked up the book for a friend but had to buy a second copy for myself.
Who doesn't want to surf? Starting is the hardest part. Sister Surfer de-mystifies surfing and makes it accessible to everyone. You do not need to be twenty, athletic, and bikini clad. The wide range of women of different ages and experiences featured in the book help to reinforce the idea that anyone can surf. Women like camaraderie and this book makes you feel like you are part of a community even if you haven't started surfing yet. The lessons in the book can be taken into every other part of your life where courage needs to overcome fear.
The book is beautifully done with lots of graphics and great photos of women with the huge smiles that come from conquering fear or achieving a dream. The style of the book allows you to either skim for relevant topics or read it from cover to cover.
1/2 Inspiration + 1/2 How To = A great read........2005-11-16
I have sand caught between the pages of this book, because it motivated me to get in the water ASAP. A highly recommended read for those who seek the waves. Kia Afcari and Mary Osborne have shown me that surfing is more than a sport, it is rebirth.

New York City, the melting pot of the United States, contains the nation's largest West Indian immigrant population. Since the immigration explosion of 1965, the Afro-Caribbean influx has impacted the social dynamic of the United States and its native-born African Americans, often with volatile results. Black Identities, an important sociological work by Mary C. Waters, explores the question, "How similar or different is it to be a black immigrant or descendent of immigrants in Brooklyn in the late twentieth century from what it was like to be an Irish, Italian, or Jewish immigrant in the earlier part of the century?" Waters interviews blacks from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, and other islands and deconstructs the mutual myths, truths, allegiances, and distrusts between these communities and whites (as well as African Americans with deeper family roots in the U.S.). Among the stereotypes Waters addresses, the most dangerous one is the perceived superiority of Afro-Caribbeans to African Americans. She deflates this and other myths with a combination of sharp scholarship and dead-on analysis. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
The story of West Indian immigrants to the United States is considered a great success. Many of these adoptive citizens have prospered, including General Colin Powell. But Mary Waters tells a very different story about immigrants from the West Indies, especially their children.
She finds that when the immigrants first arrive, their knowledge of English, their skills and contacts, their self-respect, and their optimistic assessment of American race relations facilitate their integration into the American economic structure. Over time, however, the realities of American race relations begin to swamp their positive cultural values. Persistent, blatant racial discrimination soon undermines the openness to whites the immigrants have when they first arrive. Discrimination in housing channels them into neighborhoods with inadequate city services and high crime rates. Inferior public schools undermine their hopes for their children's future. Low wages and poor working conditions are no longer attractive for their children, who use American and not Caribbean standards to measure success.
Ultimately, the values that gained these first-generation immigrants initial success--a willingness to work hard, a lack of attention to racism, a desire for education, an incentive to save--are undermined by the realities of life in the United States. In many families, the hard-won relative success of the parents is followed by the downward slide of their children. Contrary to long-held beliefs, Waters finds, those who resist Americanization are most likely to succeed economically, especially in the second generation.

A classic in the field of attachment theory.......1996-11-18
Mary Ainsworth, a student of Bowlby, is a pioneer of attachment theory. This book describes her seminal experiment called "The Strange Situation," which tested how infants responded to reunion episodes with their mothers. Using this experimental setup, Ainsworth and her coworkers were able to identify securely attached babies and two types of insecurely attached babies. Long-term follow-up studies by other researchers have confirmed these findings and shown that there are long-term serious consequences for those infants who suffer attachment pathology in the early months of their life. A classic.

Book Description
This book examines professional literary criticism by Romantic-era British women to reveal that, while developing a conscious professionalism, women literary critics helped to shape the aesthetic models that defined Romantic literary values and made the British literary heritage a source of national pride. Women critics understood the contested nature of aesthetics and the public implications of aesthetic values on questions such as morality, both public and private, the nation's cultural heritage, even the essential qualities of Britishness itself.

Great book but the cover fell off due to poor binding.......2000-03-20
A great book for explaining the essentials of groundwater modeling including governing equations and statistical evaluation of numeric modeling. I just wish the publisher could produce a book that the cover didn't fall off within the first couple months of use.
Great content but poor binding.......1999-03-31
This text was used in my groundwater modeling class and was useful and instructive specifically for GMS and MODFLOW. The binding split after normal use during the quarter to almost every student enrolled in the course.
A great preview of modeling methodology.......1998-08-27
This text outlines the basic principles and problems faced by young groundwater modelers. The comprehensive interpretation of common challenges are handled with reference to real case studies. Basic steady-state groundwater modeling is supplimented with transient examples. It is a great text for any groundwater modeling class at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Customer Reviews:
Introduction to Groundwater Modeling.......2003-05-05
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.
This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.
Outdated and of little value.......2001-12-09
I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.
Highly recommended.......2000-03-31
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.
Book Description
When the fighting of the Mexican Revolution died down in 1920, the national government faced the daunting task of building a cohesive nation. It had to establish control over a disparate and needy population and prepare the country for global economic competition. As part of this effort, the government enlisted the energy of artists and intellectuals in cultivating a distinctly Mexican identity. It devised a project for the incorporation of indigenous peoples and oversaw a vast, innovative program in the arts. The Eagle and the Virgin examines the massive nation-building project Mexico undertook between 1920 and 1940.
Contributors explore the nation-building efforts of the government, artists, entrepreneurs, and social movements; their contradictory, often conflicting intersection; and their inevitably transnational nature. Scholars of political and social history, communications, and art history describe the creation of national symbols, myths, histories, and heroes to inspire patriotism and transform workers and peasants into efficient, productive, gendered subjects. They analyze the aesthetics of nation building made visible in murals, music, and architecture; investigate state projects to promote health, anticlericalism, and education; and consider the role of mass communications, such as cinema and radio, and the impact of road building. They discuss how national identity was forged among social groups, specifically political Catholics, industrial workers, middle-class women, and indigenous communities. Most important, the volume weighs in on debates about the tension between the eagle (the modernizing secular state) and the Virgin of Guadalupe (the Catholic defense of faith and morality). It argues that despite bitter, violent conflict, the symbolic repertoire created to promote national identity and memory making eventually proved capacious enough to allow the eagle and the virgin to coexist peacefully.
