Book Description

Roll forming is one of the most widely used processes in the world for forming metals. Most of the existing knowledge resides in various journal articles or in the minds of those who have learned from experience. Providing a vehicle to systematically collect and share this important knowledge, the Roll Forming Handbook presents the first comprehensive, dedicated treatment to all facets of roll forming, supplying references to more in-depth information to fill in the gaps. This book spans from conception of the roll forming operation, purchasing and specifying equipment, and roll design to maintenance, troubleshooting, safety, and operator training. Detailed discussions reveal how material, equipment, tooling, and operator factors affect overall efficiency and product quality. Expert contributors share insights based on many years of hard-won experience, including effects of secondary operations such as punching, embossing, curving and cutting in the line; designing products for efficient roll forming; mechanical properties of metals, lubrication and the influence of coatings on roll design and forming; and mathematical simulations of various deformations that occur during processing to determine their causes and find a solution. Outlining a practical approach to select, set up, and operate roll forming lines, the Roll Forming Handbook combines scientific background and practical know-how that enables you to set up cost-effective and high-quality roll forming lines with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Good detail and depth.......2007-03-08

If you are new to roll forming, or have years of experience, I think you will find this a great resource. It is difficult to find this kind of information anywhere, let alone combined into a single source.

This book covers, in detail, almost every aspect of roll forming. The writing style covers the logic, math and basic information without being too techie. There is even a touch of humor from time to time.

I have already found several things we can improve on in our operations, as well as recognizing some new areas to investigate.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me a lot........2007-04-07

Book covers all the basics and more. I learned a lot from it and use it as a base for many different types of jewelry that I make. It's well written and can be used by beginners and the more experienced metalsmiths.

5 out of 5 stars The total student guide.......2007-02-22

A tremendous book that covers all of the basics. If you are considering taking a class on metalsmithing, you should consider this book. It is an inexpensive foundation book that covers all of the basics and gives you good information on almost everything. Some of the more advanced details are not covered, but it has so much basic information that can be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Metalsmith.......2007-01-24

I borrowed this book several times from our local library and finally decided to see if a copy was still avaviable to buy. Its full of very useful information that Ive seldom if ever seen elsewhere. A great book for a hobby metal worker OR professional. Tims explanations on how to carry out various operations and processes are consise and easy to follow. Im REALLY enjoying owning this reference work.
A must for amateur or professional metalworkers jewellers or anyone who likes to "potter " in the shed .

5 out of 5 stars He's the Master.......2006-07-20

Tim McCreight writes a book that is useful for beginners as well as more advanced students of metalsmithing. The information is presented in a manner that is easy to understand. Once you have mastered the technique the book is a wonderful reference tool. This is a must have for your metalsmithing library.

5 out of 5 stars The one book for any art metal/jewelry artist.......2006-03-29

This edition or any of the other versions of this book is a must have. I have seen this book in one edition or another sold in the most different locations with only one thing in common. That is METAL you can use it no matter what you are doing if its with metal you can use this book. I have a large number of books in my collection and find that I use this one to answer questions and get quick info. I would suggest that you get the pro edition at some point as it comes with a disk with some small programs for a PDA and books on the computer only. I own it in three different editions.

this book is awesome! there are so many projects and all of the doable! the colors, patterns, media and all the embellishments used make you want to do the projects. this one is a keeper for me.

4 out of 5 stars Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09

I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.

5 out of 5 stars this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01

Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!

5 out of 5 stars Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21

This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01

This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Exhaustive treatment on artmetal techniques.......2004-06-13

I took a chance on what the first two reviewers on this site said about this book and bought it unseen. Thanks to Oppi Untracht and those two people I have purchased a book without parallel. Their descriptions are both honest and accurate. In fact the title and sub-title of this book is both accurate and understated.
This is the most exhaustive photographic treatment of artmetal on the market. As an example we see a detailed treatment on inlaying in which a craftsman from India first casts and then inlays silver into a piece of Bidri work.(Bidri work is the inlaying of pure silver, in wire and sheet form, into cast objects of a non ferrous zinc alloy) Thirty Four photos show the process from casting a dish to finally polishing the finished product with the silver inlaid into the surface. There are other books on the market that talk about inlaying like "Metalwork and Enamelling" by Herbert Maryon (another excellent book) but they only talk us through the process whereas here we get to see it being done in photographic form. I will only list that one example but all the processes and subjects are explained equally well whether it be discussing Soldering, Casting Waxes or Raising metal, or even explaining the subject of Polishing Compounds.
The section at the back of the book on Material and Tool supply houses will be of much use to those living in North America. No doubt since its publication some of these will have closed but at lest it gives you a point of reference to start from and I only wished that we had them way down here at the bottom of the world.
The book also includes a good Glossary and there is also included a Bibliography which will be of use to those wanting to look up some of the older titles.
I will finish there as I am giddy with delight and am about to really start rambling on and believe that you will be too if you buy this outstanding book.
    5+ Stars

5 out of 5 stars This is a very thorough encyclopeadia of metalworking.......1998-12-26

I have always regarded this as the ultimate reference book for metaworkers. It covers many different facets of metalworking in a very clear way with lots of good photographs. How can this important book be out of print?

5 out of 5 stars Well written encyclopedic introduction to art metal work.......1998-03-12

This book, printed in 1968 and reprinted in 1975 is a classic text with over 440 well written pages on metalworking processes and another 60 pages of detailed tables, charts, indexes et cetera. It provides a mini-course in the history, philosophy, anthropology and technology of art metal working.

The book is well illustrated in black and white, demonstrating a logical progression of techniques from ancient to mid 20th century. There is little except sketchy mention of industrial processes such as electroforming, heavy casting and spinning and none at all of recent gimmicks such as sonic carving.

In the paranoid and safety conscious social climate of the late 1990's the most notable deficit in this book is the general absense of discussion about health and safety hazard issues. (I suppose that when the book was written authors still presumed their readers had either common walking-around sense to know that fire is hot, dusts and fumes toxic and hammers would mash their itty bitty fingers or if in doubt would go look up safe shop practices in other books written on that subject.)

      5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-05-21

I just finished probably my 10th or so knife using the techniques learned in this book. This book is currently available in a German edition from Dick Fine Tools but the English version is still out of print. It is very nearly worth whatever you have to pay if you are at all interested in Scandinavian knifemaking, an excellent book. As an addition, if you can find Swedish Carving Techniques by Wille Sundqvist he goes into knife usage in depth. These two books will have you making spoons, small bowls and even buttons for a favorite jacket, all with knives and a few carving tools.

5 out of 5 stars A Way of Knowing and Doing.......2006-02-07

Bergman does a fine job of encouraging the reader to make, use, and appreciate Scandinavian-style knives. The reader is also encouraged to confront and appreciate a set of knife traditions that, until recently, have been neither well known nor sufficiently appreciated outside their native Scandinavia. In short, Bergman's book is both a useful "how-to manual" and a fascinating cultural study.

Bergman's instructions to aspiring knife makers are sufficiently clear and encouraging such that all but the most inept tool users will come away with sufficient knowledge and motivation to encourage them to attempt to make their first Scandinavian-style knife and, most likely, many more such knives thereafter. I suspect that there have been many useful and even attractive knives that have been made using the instructions in this book that have amazed all who have seen them, including the knifemakers themselves

I was at least as impressed, however, at the insights that Bergman provides non-Scandinavians into the cultures, traditions, and mindsets that surround and inform the making and use of knives in Scandinavian societies. It might not be too much to say that Bo Bergman may, in his way, be "right up there" with Ingmar Bergman, Ole Rolvaag, Soren Kirkegaard, and the Norse and Finnish sagas as a useful point of reference for non-Scandinavians into the subtleties of Scandinavian culture and psychology.

I learned recently that this fine book has gone out of print. This is unfortunate. I can only hope that a means can be found to re-issue this work so that new members of the rapidly growing cadre of Scandinavian knife enthusiasts can also benefit and be inspired by Bo Bergman's skill and wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars taking a blade and turning it into a scandinavian knife.......2005-11-15

The nitty gritty: does it allow you to craft a knife? I'm just completing my 2nd knife based entirely on this book, so for me--yes.

The book assumes you have a blade and are interested in the scandinavian approach to turning it into a knife. There is some general discussion, but mostly it is a description of several projects involving different styles and materials in handle making and in sheath making. There is enough detail to allow you to 'join the dots' or use it as a basis for taking off on your own. It is also pleasant to see that the 'suggested tool kit' does not run into $$$$$$ or involve special use machines, which encouraged me to get going.

      5 out of 5 stars Great how-to guide.......2005-09-20

Bergman describes in clearly written detail how to craft a knife handle.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-12-10

I got the recomendation for this book off the Ragweed web site. It was rather hard to find, but Amazon found it for me. I am a beginner knife maker, and this book is perfect for a beginner, you will learn so much. Why bother making a blade when you can buy some great blades from Thompson's Scandinavian Knife supply or North Coast knife supply. Who has the time or equipment to forge a blade? You can get a nice Lauri pt with a rockwell sharpness of 63 that will be sharper than anything you now own. Bo will show you how to make the handle and sheath for your knife. He has quite a few step by step projects that are incredibly detailed. The knifes turn out great and they will be unlike any you see on the net. Many of the Scandinavian web sites just have pukko style knives. He has a large varitey of scandianvian knifes. He has instructions for a handle made out of layers of birch bark that looks awesome. I am making a Sami style knife at the moment and it looks great. You learn something with each knife. His instructions on making sheaths is alone worth the price of the book. He shows you how to make all leather, wood and leather, and all wood sheaths, very cool. I would recommed this book to anyone who wants to make a very function knife that they can actually use. Many of the knife books out there show you how to make huge knives that are really not that practical, if you need a weapon, get a gun. But if you want a knife that has years of tradition behind and can be a great tool, then get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Burton should be a Kiwi!.......2007-08-25

Mike Burton should be complimented for sharing his multitude of skills with the reading and crafting public. This book is the distillation of many years of practical and academic study. To be able to take advantage of this wisdom for the paltry sum that this book cost is remarkable. Mike has the ability to take us through all the stages in the manufacture of a great variety of woodworking items. He does it in a simple, easy to follow manner and with a beautiful dry wit. If you buy this book you will be in the position to save a great deal on the purchase of essential tools by making many of your own to your considerable satisfaction. I have had the book for only two weeks and so have concentrated on my own particular interest. I now have a splendid array of woodcarving tools. They cost me very little in materials and the saving is many hundreds of dollars. The price of this book would only buy half a woodcarving tool! Mike has a fine eye for a bargain himself and it is a pleasure to be inducted into his economic ways. In the weeks and months ahead I feel that my savings, skills and satisfaction at making my own tools will increase many times. Mike you should have been a New Zealander! You would fit in very well.

Ten projects from a master craftsman provide enlightening details on how to make a range of knives - and remain unique instructions, keeping Custom Knifemaking: 10 Projects From A Master Craftsman active on the list of recommended picks even years after publication. From kitchen paring knives and forged camp knives to pocket knives and wilderness skinning knives, Custom Knifemaking provides tempering, soldering, and fitting details available in few other references.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2005-02-22

This is a great book. I bought it because I had been interested in making knives for quite a while. It goes over how to plan them out, how to temper and harden them, and the overall process. The tools to make them can be expensive and big, but if you're really into knifemaking then this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars The book to start with for hobby knifemakers.......2003-06-20

If you want to be Bob Loveless, this isn't your book. If you want to make a decent knife but have no idea where to start, this is your book. If you want to make a few knives and use your hands for every step, start with McCreight's book. If you have already made a few knives and konw what you like, you might find useful information here, but it might not be the one to start with.

I started here. I now own almost all of the knifemaking books on the market and all of them have useful information. This is still the one I go to for inspiration when I want variety. The 10 different projects are presented from the viewpoint of a jeweler who wants to make a few knives with many techniques adapted from silversmithing, rather than the more usual machinist-knifemaker books that start by telling you to get a milling machine and a belt grinder. For beginners and people who want to use their hands, this book is very good.

The knives are a little rough (your first few will be rough, no matter what book you use, so don't worry about that), but functional. The hollow-handle survival knife is probably the one that needs the most revision. I just don't trust the soldered attachment of tang to handle.

In all, I suggest this book to more people than any other. After this one, I would send folks to David Boye's book, then to Blackie Collins' (yes, I know it is out of print, but look for it). The Loveless book is the fourth on my personal list. It required a machine shop to make a knife like Bob Loveless and that is just out of the scope of a beginner. McCreight on the other hand, has a book that is specifically for beginners. Start here.

3 out of 5 stars A decent beginners project workbook........1999-02-10

As books for the beginning knifemaker go "10 projects" is an excelent place to start. Tim McCreight has done a good job of selecting a variety of interesting projects of different skill levels for the novice. Each project is designed to bring a new aspect of knife making to light, and in doing so present a very rounded beginning. I have only two problems which I think the book fails to address. First, the depth of information concerning cutlery and its production could fill several volumes. I believe that Mr. McCreight would have been better served to concentrate on the stock removal method first, so that the finishing and grinding aspects of knife production could be understood in full. Then proceed to the forge and show the transition therefore giving a distinct break and an opportunity for the student to explore the skills involved. The second difficulty I have with this work is that some of the instuctions are difficult to follow and require alot of practice to pull off successfully. Other than that is is a well written and comprehensive work. and although not my first choice for a beginner it is a valuable tool for projects and tecniques.

5 out of 5 stars Old School Metalwork.......2007-09-13

Found this book gathering dust on a local library shelf. There are a lot of books out there on new processes and procedures in reference to Metalworking. This is one of the older texts that is well worth reading because it revives some of the past processes that have recently been forgotten. Example, how to etch aluminum - not many new books even give aluminum any coverage. And there are projects for pewter. Remember pewter? Easy to work with and shines like chrome? No modern jewelry books even mention pewter in their index. Anyway, this book is worth at least what you pay for it.

4 out of 5 stars Its a Dover reprint Duh!.......2006-03-29

It has become somewhat of a mild shock to me how many people do not understand that Dover is in the reprinting biz. This is a old school style middle/high school sheetmetal or general metal text book type. It covers a basic overview of the tools and the steps to use them. Other than updating some of the tools for soldering ect. It is pretty much the same as you will get out of the latest glossy high tech photo book on the same subject. The only difference being that the projects are retro which is hot now so that style is in. The projects are the same type we had in school in the 60's and 70's Most of the hand tools, hammers, stakes and punches and pitch bowls haven't changed. I myself have and still use stakes and hammers that are seventy and eighty years old. I own it.

I found this book full of helpful information, and easy to read. A must have for anyone interested in metal craft.

2 out of 5 stars No wonder the book is so inexpensive.......2005-02-02

Copyright 1972...should be 1772. The illustrations are Old World sketches at best. If you want a VERY brief overview of tools and processes, this book should do. Although for being a basic and introductory book, it assumes you know some terms which can be frustrating. Probably a good guide if you're taking a course and want to refer to very basic tools and processes. Presentation is definitely "old school".

4 out of 5 stars Good Coverage of Metalworking Basics.......2004-06-13

If one reads the Editorial Reviews you will see what is contained in this great little book. I was going to make a full list of what is include but they have given a good but brief summary so I will just add to it slightly.
The book is divided into three main sections. The first is Tools and Metalworking Processes. This section is 52 pages long and has what I believe to be excellent drawings of the tools required and gives drawings of the processes like Hollowing, Raising, Chasing and Etching to name a few. Section 2, at 110 pages, is called Projects with Processes and here Kronquist outlines a series of items to be made giving simple yet clear explanations of the relevant steps taken. In this section he makes a 1 Quart Pitcher, a Mail Box, a Fluted 9" Bowl, a Beaker, Serving Tray and an assortment of other items. The third section is devoted to the projects. In this section he gives us a series of drawing with dimensions for small items. They are mainly composed of items of Tableware, Cigarette holders, Coasters, Tea Strainers and Jewellery Boxes to name some. He then includes a small secion of 4 pages with finishes that can be applied to the various metals used. There is a couple of finishes each for Aluminium, Brass, Copper, Pewter and Silver. The book is then completed with a Glossary.
This book is aimed, I believe, at people who are interested in crafting as a hobby or the person who is wanting to get into this as a hobby. I do not believe it was aimed at practitioners of metalwork who are already true Craftsmen so do not be confused by the title. As such I think this is an excellent book for a person starting out for it gives you some simple projects that include dimensions and if you follow the instrucions you will build up a set of skills to tackle the projects of your own imagination. There are the big brothers to this book on the market and I have reviewed some but there is nothing wrong with this book and it should certainly be considered.
I therefore recommend it to others and I'm very pleased it is in my collection of books on working metal.
