Beautiful.......2003-12-29
This is an unbelievably beautiful book! The photos are very good quality, the information accompanying them is interesting. Also loved the chronology at the end. Very lovely and well done.

The Art of Glass is a beautiful introduction to the art of glassmaking during its most innovative period of the 20th century. Beginning with the precursors to art nouveau, this survey traces art glass through the magnificent creations of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Argy-Rousseau, Lalique, art deco, and Swedish modernism. The historical background of each artist and company is discussed in detail, as are evaluations of their achievements, making The Art of Glass an invaluable guide to the medium. A glossary and index of glass artists are also included.

Beautiful glass with a major omission........2000-08-22
Fine pictures with solid historical copy. I would rate "The Art of Glass" five stars if it were't for the exclusion of the glass of Frederick Carder, not only a major contributor to the genre, but designer/maker of some of the most beautiful glass objects of any period ever made.
Book Description
Magnificent motifs reproduced from rare original edition: florals, foliates, female figures, pastoral landscapes, more. Ideas for craftspeople and designers.

Incredible source book.......2004-09-03
If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.
Super source book.......2004-06-05
Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.
The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.
You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.
Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18
Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.
Art Noveau Stained glass-Lyongruen.......1999-12-29
Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.

An outstanding reference.......2006-12-10
Eight color photos do more than display Tiffany lamps, as other titles do: they have been polled from thousands of lamps with hundreds of designs to show the differences in shade patterns and complexity. A lovely display of colors and patterns is accompanied by clear description and artistic and collector value insights. "Tiffany By Design" is an outstanding reference and a welcome addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Antiques & Collectibles reference collections.

Book Description
Dazzling in their bold use of color and wide range of designs, Art Nouveau tiles are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. These international tile designs encompassed striking decorative elements to be used in residences and public buildings. High fired, these tiles retain their original color and beauty despite over one hundred years of use. This book, designed for both the beginning collector and the long time lover of tiles, includes full color examples of over 600 designs. A very useful and beautiful collectors guide, it provides information about many major tile manufacturers. It is arranged by company and design and contains a guide to market prices, as well as suggestions and tips for tile collectors. Filling a gap in the tile books currently available, this volume provides both the largest collection of single Art Nouveau images published to date, and a concise introduction to the field of tiles. A bibliography contains research sources for more detailed study and information regarding organizations devoted to tile preservation and collection. This is the perfect choice for any lover of ceramic surfaces and those who appreciate and enjoy color and design. It will undoubtedly be instrumental in not only introducing many to the beauty of Art Nouveau design, but also expanding their interest in collecting this amazing art form.

A disappointment.......2003-02-04
Incomplete and cursory. Photographic image quality so-so. Amateurish.
Art Nouveau Tiles C. 1890 - 1914.......2002-11-24
Sometimes you need a good source, with photographs, for identifying the many, many art nouveau tiles out there. THIS BOOK DOES THAT!!!! Over the years I have collected some art nouveau tiles and, with the aid of this book --- IN MINUTES --- I was able to identify all of them. As a bonus a current value for each tile is also provided. For the serious tile collector Art Nouveau Tiles by Sandra Fowler and Wendy Harvey is a MUST!!!!
Art Nouveau tile C. 1890-1914.......2002-02-18
I was disappointed with the quality of this book. All the photos are either digital or downloaded from the web. There is a great variety of beautiful tiles but the images themselves are really grainy.

Zsolnay Ceramics: Collecting a Culture (Schiffer Book for Collectors)
ASIN: 0300097042 |
Book Description
The Zsolnay Manufactory represents a triumph of Hungarian applied arts, for during its heyday it produced elegant and innovative ceramics for an international clientele as well as architectural ceramics that embellished some of the finest public and private buildings in the Austro-Hungarian empire. This striking book recounts the story of the 150-year-old company and presents numerous examples of its work, showing how its changing fortunes reflect the cultural, economic, and political developments in Central and Eastern Europe.
The book provides an introduction and essays by European scholars that examine the manufactory's history. They describe its founding, its years of international fame, its greatest achievements in both ceramics and architectural ceramics in the early twentieth century, its nationalization after the world wars and the Communist takeover, and its present workshop activities. The book provides new photographs of some two hundred objects and designs as well as a selection of fifty archival photographs from throughout the manufactory's years of production. There are also detailed entries for all work shown, biographies of the manufactory's premier artists and of Zsolnay family members, and a glossary of ceramics production techniques.
This illustrated book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture from July 17 to October 13, 2002.
Book Description
This lovely book, published to accompany the traveling exhibition opening at the Seattle Art Museum in October 2005, showcases 120 objects, illustrating his wide-ranging interests and placing him in context with other significant artists of his time.

S. Kemp on Johnson's Tiffany.......2007-06-08
Having seen the Tiffany exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art last summer, I wanted the exhibit book but couldn't afford it. Amazon saved the day--I could use my coupon and get $25 off as well as a rock bottom price. The book is great. Buy it for sure!
Louis Comfort Tiffany: Artist for the Ages.......2006-11-10
This book reveals great vivid pictures of mid eighteenth century to early nineteenth century pieces of Louis Comfont Tiffany. This is a excellent book to have in memory of the Louis Tiffany Comfort museum exposition of 2006. Book displays wonderful detailed colored pictures. In addition, pictures portray realism. "Louis Comfort Tiffany: Artist for the Ages" contains in-depth descriptions about the artist's art and creativity in parts of the United States and Europe. Historic accounts and experiences of Louis Comfont Tiffany are depicted throughout the book by author Marilynn Johnson. This book would be a great heirloom or gift.

Customer Reviews:
nice ideas and designs, but...........2007-04-04
There are lovely stained glass ideas in this book, but... to use as a coloring exercise, you need to know that you really have to have felt tip pens to make the colours show up. There is a lot of black surrounding the designs and the "transparent" colouring areas are a light gray which cuts down on the brilliancy of any colouring.
Great idea book.......2000-12-29
As a stained glass artist, this book got my creative juices flowing. The pictures are fairly complex, just like the stained glass of the 1920's era, and made me wish I had crayons or markers that could duplicate the textured, swirled, multicolored glass that was used during this time! It's a great starting point for people who'd like to take on more complex glass projects and who want to experiment with color combinations befhorehand.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Misleading Cover.......2006-06-07
I thought this book would be mainly drawings similar to the cover, individual drawings that could be reproduced. They are not. MANY of the pages are china designs (patterns around the edges of teapots, plates, etc). The drawings are not reproduced flat, making them difficult to use. In some cases, I felt the drawings were a little dark as well. I was thinking they would be a little more like a coloring book style - outlines or solids so that the pattern is clear(much like the objects on the cover), but that's rarely the case. Some of the drawings are quite nice, but I would check this book out in person before purchase to ensure it is what you are looking for.
I found this book to be very helpful........1999-06-09
Authentic Designs from the American Arts and Crafts Movement has proven to be a very helpful and inspiring publication. Luckily, it turned out to be just exactly what I was looking for! I have used several of the illustrations as inspiration to create logos or spot illustrations for brochures and business cards. The illustrations in the book are well-drawn and easy to see. The halftone screenings of the originally full-color illustrations are a little flat, but they are still nicely reproduced. If there were more full-color illustrations, I would have granted this neat book 5 stars. Thanks for the concise collection of many great design ideas.
A Bad Coffee Table Book.......1998-12-23
Misleading Title- This book covers only designs from Keramic Studios. No depth and no inspiration. I would rate it 0 stars. A waste of money and in the trash it goes.
