A Balanced Approach - 4th Edition.......2007-02-10
I purchased this book for a class I took in spring 06 and found it extremly helpful. I've applied the balance approach method in working with young children. I've also applied the information helping my 3 year old learn to read. He is now 4 and enjoys reading. I highly recommend this book.
Great book!!!.......2006-12-27
I found this book to be fantastic!!!! The green pages at the back give many great ideas for teachers of literacy.
Very useful.......2006-03-11
I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.
A must have!!.......2003-03-08
I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it!
Excellent resource for teachers.......2002-11-17
This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2007-09-24
I am a elementary teacher and I think this book is awesome! It is important for teachers and parents alike. I wish I'd seen it when my children were babies. If more parents read this it could make a real difference with their children's reading abilities and attitudes.
I bought one for my daughter who is a middle school reading teacher and one for my son and his wife who are about to have a baby. Next I'm buying one for my student teacher. EXCELLENT!
should be required.......2007-09-09
This was a gift to me from my pediatrician. I read the entire thing. The evidence is quite remarkable as to the importance of reading to children, the earlier the better. I would recommend this to every parent who wants the best for their child.
A beautiful Book.......2007-08-24
The Read-Aloud Handbook is a beautiful book i love this book it so entertaining breathtaking, enlightening, full of knowledge. I love every second of this book. I hope to take some ideas from the book and make give my three year old son a great start in life by start reading to him. I got the book two days after i made the purchase. Thank Excellent Book i definitely will recommend this seller.
Read Aloud Handbook.......2007-08-03
As a teacher and as a parent I would recommend this book to anyone who lives with or works around children. It is an easy read with practical, common-sense advice. I love the book suggestions that are listed, and have begun giving the book as a baby shower present.
Every parent should read this book.......2007-06-29
This book makes so much sense in providing facts, research, and personal examples on how reading aloud to kids helps them develop a love of the written word, develop vocabulary, spelling and grammar skills, listening comprehension, fluency, and many more skills. It is presented in an entertaining format as Jim Trelease summarizes his many years as the "read aloud guy". A "must have" for the collection of any parent or teacher.
Also includes excellent lists of books for specific uses and age groups.

Book Description
This brief version of the bestselling crosscurricular classic retains its hallmark coverage of sourcebased writing skills combined with five popular readings chapters. This portable version represents a carefullychosen selection from the original edition, with five (of the original seven) readings chapters included in their entirety. The abbreviated rhetoric section still covers the skills of summary, critique, and synthesis, taking students stepbystep through the process of writing papers based on source material. Students then put these skills to practice on thematicallylinked essays on provocative topics in the disciplinespecific readings chapters. A stronger focus on argumentation addresses the trend found in today's composition classrooms. Individuals interested in writing from sources and academic writing in different disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
Convoluted Nightmare -just terrible.......2007-03-02
I'm currently using this for a freshman English course, and I find it is a complete mess. There are historical mistakes (claiming Cicero was the greatest writer of the Roman Empire -when Cicero wrote during the Republic), spelling errors, and even grammatical errors (take the title of Chapter 4 for instance: "Types of Synthesis: Explanatory and Argument" -has the author ever run into the term parallelism?).
The book is full of redundancies and proprietary terminology. Some of the concepts are barely explained, others are beaten to death. The writing style is not consistent, leading to the suspicion that many people had their hands in this one -perhaps "authors" in India. Some of the exercises are barely comprehensible. For instance:
"Look over the preceding readings and make a list of the ways they address the overall topics of computers, communication, and relationships. Make your list as detailed as you can. Then write several lists grouping together the readings that deal with similar aspects of the overall topics" (108).
We really don't want our students writing like this, so the last thing we should do is expose them to a textbook like this.
Some of the reading selections are good, and others are vapid, pointless, and generally worthless. Essays about dirty dorm rooms and lack of parking spaces behind the gym -oh yes, this is really provocative.
I challenge anyone to find me a worse textbook.
Great Service.......2007-02-24
Received book within a week of purchase. Book in excellent condition. Great Service!
Good for Academics.......2006-03-27
The book provides quality information about research papers and topical essays that effectively demonstrate the many major parts of a research paper. It focuses on summary, synthesis, critique, and analysis; the inside cover gives the reader an easy to read summary of the contents. While the subject matter of writing papers is fairly dry, the information contained in the essays is somewhat interesting.
The best apparatus out there.......2002-10-24
This cut down by more than half the time it has taken my students to learn to write summaries, integrate sources, understand argument, and write syntheses.
Many of the readings are also interesting and productive, especially those on Folklore and Obedience to Authority. I'd teach it in combination with a course reader, though, since there's almost no attention to the process of helping students find their voice and write more beautiful prose.
But no one book can do everything, and I plan to keep teaching this one. My students like it too -- with its focus on arguable ideas and the wonderful step-by-step breakdown of the writing process.

good job breaking down the steps of writing.......2007-07-19
Great ideas for beginning writers in terms of organization. Breaks down the steps simply. Explains what makes interesting writing.
GREAT resource!.......2007-05-09
I have used this book with my own lessons and bought it for all the 2-5 teachers in my building. Very user friendly. Has great ideas for mini-lessons and wonderful resources to copy for students to keep in their wirters' notebooks. I highly recommend this book!
Makes writing seem easy!.......2007-01-16
This book is aimed toward older students, grades 3-8, but I have 2nd graders. Another teacher at my school recommended it, so I gave it a try. While not every lesson is appropriate for my grade level, a lot of it is. I especially like how there is a mini-play (2 or 3 minutes) to go along with the lessons. My students love the section of word choice, where there is a play of Strong Verb vs Weak Verb (like a boxing match). It has reproducible reference sheets for the students to use for transition words, color words, strong verbs, etc. These are great to add to a writing folder. I can't imagine how great this would be for the intermediate grades. Great resource! Especially when you aren't given much of a guideline on how to teach writing!
The Best for teaching writing.......2007-01-14
I work in a sixth grade classroom with second-language learners. This book is the best. I showed it to my fifth grade colleague, and he bought it. What is great about this book is that it has lists of words you can give to the kids such as strong verbs or sight words or transition words. It has wonderful teacher sheets to copy for teaching mini lessons. I used many of her ideas such as show/don't tell, or teaching similes or teaching dialogue. Seriously was not a book that I put on the shelf and rarely looked at. It's hard buying a book and not being able to thumb through it, but I tell you that you won't be disappointed with this one!
Hands-On Writing Tools for Young Writers.......2006-07-18
I enjoyed this book. It gave some very practical advice on creating a workshop environment for writing in the Intermediate grades. I have used the ideas (modified) with younger writers and they are equally as beneficial.
I think this is a must have for anyone who would like to put some Umphhh back into writing in the classroom.

integrating arts .......2007-10-02
a bit slower on the delivery than expected, but the item is in great condition!
Not what I expected.......2006-08-12
I ordered "Integrating the Arts Across the Elementary School Curriculum" and "Art and Cognition: Integrating the Visual Arts in the Curriculum"and "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum". I was so disappointed to see this book had only a small section at the end of the book describing any lesson plans to use integrating art in the curriculum, and the book cost $55.00! I thought for that price I would have had a book full of information I could use in my classroom. I would not buy this book again, in fact I would like to get a refund. Surprisingly, "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum" turned out to be much more informative and useful and it was only $6.97.
Must have book for teachers!.......2005-06-15
For some teachers, the idea of integrating the arts into the elementary classroom may seem daunting. The beauty of Gelineau's book is that she provides teachers with both the tools and activities necessary to make the transition seem far less overwhelming. There are sections devoted to each of the arts and within each section there are descriptors for all the elements that make up each art form. One of the most interesting things about this book is the introduction Gelineau gives at the beginning of each chapter. There is usually a definition of the art form as well as a historical perspective. Gelineau's book is completely user friendly in that it not only clarifies the concepts, but then offers clear activities for immediate implementation. All a teacher needs to do is to become comfortable with the arts. This is easy to do once you embrace the belief that the educational value of the arts lies in the doing and not in the outcome. The book is divided into seven sections. Chapters one and two deal with the power of the arts, while chapters three through seven discuss the specific art forms and how to integrate them into an elementary or middle school curriculum. Chapter seven entitled Making Connections gives some great ideas for connecting the arts to specific content areas. Because of it's easy to follow format and straightforward ideas; this book is truly a "must" for the teacher that wishes to incorporate the arts into a curriculum.

Some Interesting Essays, Some Surprising Lapses.......2007-06-26
The good: The book lavishes the mandatory amount of space on the usual topics such as racism and women, but fortunately reaches out to a larger audience. There is good material on science and technology as well as social sciences and public affairs. There's also a good selection of material of various rhetorical styles of writing. And the discussion questions after the essays generally avoid biasing the discussion. Very useable for class.
The so-so: One reviewer refers to the liberal bent of the texts. And it's abundantly clear that some perspectives receive very privileged status in Fields of Reading. So if you're looking for one version of current ivory tower orthodoxy, here it is. In that sense, there is little diversity in this book, really. So many other possible sources for writing and insights, from Fortune and BusinessWeek to Wired and The Wall Street Journal...I wish the authors had thought a little more outside their box.
The bad: Surprisingly unreliable editing. Incredibly, despite having five academics work on this, they still get important facts flat-out wrong. They apparently confused the number of wounded at Pearl Harbor with the number killed: they cite 1177 deaths in an editorial footnote, whereas knowledgeable writers (Prange) cite 2403 dead and 1178 wounded. And page 234 of my edition refers to the "missile" which hit Nagasaki!
I quote from the instructor's edition for the seventh edition; perhaps they bothered with fact-checking for the new edition. How these errors of fact endured this far is a mystery only the editors can answer. But perhaps the hidden text here is that there are only certain things these academics really care about getting right.
Motives for Teaching?.......2004-10-25
When you contemplate the long list of standard authors, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winners, worthy of emulation by students, what names spring to the forefront of your mind? Adam Gopnick, Vivian Gornick, Zoe Tracy Hardy? If not, you are out of touch with Ms. Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New Republic, those repositories of great literature, from which these and other authors are selected. You may not realize that "nonverbal courtship patterns in women" is on a par with the Declaration of Independence, or that war, racism, government, big business, fast food and most white people are all bad, or that minorities, women, homosexuals, and New York City are all good. You MIGHT, however, question whether this is really an English 101 textbook, as it pretends, or a social tract promulgating the doctrinaire beliefs of the political left. It is interesting reading, but whether or not one agrees with the selected authors, it is emphatically not a student textbook on writing, and it is not a good choice for that purpose compared to other texts available. It is not what it pretends to be.
Phenomenal Reading!.......2003-02-10
I had to purchase this book for my english course, but after only two weeks of reading and discussion I feel such an empowerment by the selections. I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite author because each one is represented so uniquely by their stories. After my class is over, I look forward to sitting down and reading those that were not assigned and re-reading those icons of society that were picked by my professor. If you want a short introduction to various famous authors then this is definitely a book you will enjoy!

This companion volume augments that content with numerous reproducible sorts that specifically address the needs of the syllables and affixes speller. Designed for elementary educators' use as part of a reading curriculum where emergent spelling is covered.
Customer Reviews:
A "must have" for anyone implementing Words Their Way........2007-07-28
Sorts 1-5 are concept sorts, 6-11 are picture sorts for phonological awareness, 12-14 are alphabet knowledge sorts, and 15-27 are sorts for beginning consonant sounds. Assessments are included for each group of sorts. Instructions for introducing/demonstrating the sorts are given, as well as notes for the teacher, literature links for read-aloud, extension activities and my favorite - shared reading texts. I think that this is a fabulous resource and after teaching first grade for 5 years, I plan on implementing Words Their Way in my kindergarten classroom in September. I also think that this is a must have for anyone planning on implementing the program. I don't think that the WTW textbook offers the range of resources in this book.
Reading Specialist.......2005-10-24
This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners! I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.
A MUST for K-2 teachers........2005-02-21
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with the black line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching. I use it daily now.
