Quilt making is a natural outlet for kids' innate creativity. Take children on a field trip to the fabric or quilt store and you'll be refreshed by their free-spirited approach to color and amazed by their fearlessness in the face of traditional quilting "rules." Just about any 9- to 14-year-old can turn out a stupendous quilt with some adult supervision and the terrific guidance of noted expert Alex Anderson's Kids Start Quilting. Stressing safety first, Anderson introduces kids to the rotary cutter, iron, and sewing machine, as well as the other essentials. She covers all the basics of quilt anatomy, explaining how to square up, cut, pin, stitch, and press the pieces, plus how to handle settings, borders, backing, batting, basting, binding, tying, and hand quilting. The seven nicely designed step-by-step quilt projects include log cabin, four-patch, saw tooth star, and sampler designs. A kids' quilt gallery features works by the six young quilters--both girls and boys--who collaborated on the book with Anderson, and quotes from the kids and photos of them at work on their quilts provide even more encouragement to other young quilters. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Purchase.......2007-01-10
I purchased this book for my 13yo niece; it was the best buy ever. It is easy to read & the projects are very easy to understand & complete.
Skimpy.......2004-09-08
I love Alex but the book is a little too skimpy with only five blocks to choose from.
I am also surprised at the lack of photos on hand quilting. Hand quilting really needs way more illustrations and not just on burying the knot! Even the section on hand tying lacks illustrations!! If you put it in the book, you should show us how it is done so we can see it. A book on the basics should include the basics!
It is still a good book, but after having both books by Barbara Eikmeier I can say it isn't the best book I have seen on the subject. A nice addition after you have the others.
Great Teaching Tool.......2002-04-22
Alex Anderson is among the best in teaching quilting methods. This book is a great teaching tool for children of all ages. Alex really explains each step in detail and I learned some new tricks myself. She stresses safety while working with children as well as self-expression through fabric choices. A great addition to any sewing library!

Good ideas for your students.......2000-12-17
I love the thought of this book -- an art book for teachers who may not know much about art, but are planning on teaching art to their students. It's a great idea, and the book covers a great deal of information in a thin volume, from the principles of art, to the schools of artists and their works, to methods used to create art, to visiting the museum.
The book also contains suggested projects for your elementary school art students, as well as jumping-off points for discussion and activity. I only wish the book had even more ideas, but perhaps that is another book!
If you are a teacher who wants to teach art, but doesn't know much about it, and doesn't know where to begin, I suggest beginning with this book. It's a crash course not only in art, but in teaching art to elementary students and instilling a love of art within your students.

Fair--geared toward those who wish to own their own shop........1999-07-31
If you someday hope to have your own specialty or alterations-type commercial shop with industrial or commercial grade equipment, this book would be helpful to you; however, if you just want to bring in some extra money at home on your own home sewing machine, this is not really a book I would recommend. Information is somewhat vague and left my original questions unanswered.

A lavishly illustrated demonstration of what you can do with a digital camera, Start with a Digital Camera mimics a traditional photography text. It teaches how to choose a subject, arrange lighting, compose frames, work with models, and capture fast action. The author, a graphic designer, also discusses various styles of photography (landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and so on) available for exploration. But rather than discuss film, chemical development, and darkroom techniques, Odam digs into the special quirks and capabilities of digital photography. He explains--with the help of many beautiful color illustrations--how to manipulate electronic photographs on a personal computer.
Rather than focus on the mechanics of image editing, the book explains digital manipulation terms and techniques in a mostly generic way. For example, he provides a page full of variants of the same image, each under- or overexposed to a different degree. He treats color correction and other techniques similarly. However, he acknowledges the power and popularity of Adobe Photoshop by explaining specifically how to achieve certain effects--such as those created with filters--in that program. The examples of clipping and combining photographs involve Photoshop too. The result of his work: a superior guide for anyone wanting to get into photography via the digital route. --David Wall

Customer Reviews:
Something missing.......2002-03-11
The book is missing something rather important..."Now that I've captured an image, how do I get the color to match what I see, what's on my monitor and on my printer?"
The section on page 100, Color Accuracy, is incorrect. The author needs to develop an understanding of image color management. An image can be printed out of any number of applications and the color will be the same. The print driver menus can cause the color to change...not the application. Also, a properly color managed image will look similar in RGB and CMYK, not as shown in this book.
This is a good book for hobbyists who are not concerned with accurate color, which is fine as long as the book buyer understands this. Those who are concerned with color calibration and management should spend their money elsewhere.
Buy this book before you buy your camera.......2001-06-15
I was shopping for a digital camera to use for studio still-life photography. It's a confusing world full of technospeak and options. I bought this book and it was clear as day what I needed to buy and my camera ended up costing me a lot less than I would have guessed. I realized I didn't need most of the features on the higher-end cameras. This book also clarified "flash" on digitals and lighting requirements which had previously been mysterious to me. It's easier than you think.
Since getting my camera this month, I have used the camera to create large high-resolution images for 3 projects: a tradeshow booth, an ad slick, and a product spec sheet. I wouldn't have attempted these projects without reading this book.
This book also helps one see how Photoshop and digital cameras go hand in hand to create profession images. Opened my eyes.
a stimulating showcase of what can be done with a digicam.......2000-06-30
Printed in full color, this about 140 page-long book suggest a lot of ideas what pictures can be taken with a digital camera. It has a small section on the principles of digital photography and necessary computer equipment, a couple of chapters on photography in general (lighting, background, etc.), and finally gives many examples of what can be done with the pictures by editing them in Adobe Photoshop. After all, the major fun of digital photography is that you can edit an image before printing it! The only problem is that you need to have Photoshop (along with a vector drawing program) and should know how to use them to take full advantage of this book's advice. My overall impression is that although one can find a more detailed and serious books on digital photography and image processing, this one may be a good gift to a person who just got his/her digital camera and needs to read somewhere how to start with it.
Easy to Understand and Visually Stimulating.......2000-04-09
I work with digital cameras and young students. This is the only book I've found which meets both of our needs. It covers technical information, yet provides visual examples that beginning students can understand. I love it!

The art of mixed media has taken on new meaning in the digital production environment, and the second edition of Start with a Scan guides new artists through the maze of image acquisition, hardware, and software toward the goal of final output. This is not just a book on scanning and creating art, but about the art and science of scanning, editing, and tailoring an image to your needs, too.
Beginning by explaining how scanners work, the different types of scanners that are out there, and why it's important to know how the scanned image will be used, the book quickly digs into the meat and potatoes of editing, altering, tracing, and otherwise changing a scanned image to suit a project.
Arguably the most interesting chapters are "Creating Textures and Backgrounds from Print and Paper" and "Transforming Photos into Graphics." One of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks that a designer faces is finding and creating background elements and graphics. In these two chapters, which probably are worth the cover price alone, Scan explains how to use scanned photos or raw elements (cloth, paper, and so on) to create the element that you need.
Although the book deals with digital tools (e.g., scanners and computers), it hardly could be called a computer graphics book. The goal is teaching how to scan and alter images, and Scan never loses sight of that. The authors deserve a great deal of credit for creating what is an educational and inspirational book on a form of visual art that happens to use computers as tools, instead of a computer book that happens to talk about digital graphics. This is how books of the genre should be written. --Mike Caputo
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Book, a guide to the both the technical and artistic .......2007-08-18
I bought this book solely for reference on scanning line art and fonts, but have found that it has much, much more to offer. I disagree with a prior reviewer that this book is only for beginners and that much of the information is out there on the web. I have been searching, without success, for specific directions on scanning line art and fonts and converting those scans into usable art. (Just two chapters in this book.) This book not only gives one specific instructions for this, but goes much further and delves quite deeply into the actual creation of real art from a simple scan. The book also provides a lot of information on turning photos into graphic art. I had considered myself a fairly advanced user of photo software, but this book has opened my eyes to an amazing range of techniques and ideas on image usage.
I was expecting a technical guide to basic scanning techniques, and this book provides that. It also takes one much further beyond mere technical skill and is a wonderful guide to both the creation and use of computer generated graphics.
Amazing book.......2005-02-14
I was graphics-challenged till I read this. The most I ever did with graphics was pretty much to resize them or add a little text. This book gives you a whole range of possibilites with color, texture, cropping, layering, etc. - more than just applying a fancy filter or tweaking the brightness and contrast. Now, based on the wealth of ideas in this book, I look at clip art and photos with a new eye, and have applied the various ideas to make a much wider variety of graphic images. The best thing about this book is that it's DESIGN-centric, rather than SOFTWARE-centric, so it's not limited to what a handful filters might do. Instead it expands your thinking to combine a whole variety of techniques to create something really unique.
for beginners.......2005-02-03
I ordered this one. I will return it. Yes, there are very good ideas in this book, but nothing great that you cannot come up by yourself if your are creative. Trust yourself.
There are many references to using photoshop (I am an intermediate photoshop user) that you can find elsewhere, not pertaining specifically to scanning.
Technical discussions on file types, resolution are OK but, once again, if you have read other books, doesn't add anything.
I think that you can find better tips and ideas surfing the Web.
Simply not for me.
The secret of great graphic design.......2001-03-31
I have already reviewed the first edition of this book. There is a second edition with *all new* graphics and more about making art for the world wide web. It is so good that I was moved to come back here and say this... here goes...
This book is the best book I have ever read about scanning. It is also the best book I have ever read about the principles of GRAPHIC ART itself. Everything that I learned formally about graphic design in years of study I found expertly summarised within these pages. This book must be the bargain of the century. Most artists would jealously guard these great secrets, tips and tricks. Look carefully at every illustration (I am still making great discoveries) analyse the appeal, reproduce in your own way and reap the artistic and financial rewards. Real insight freely and abundantly given into how professionals make the grade.
Raising scanning to an art form.......1999-07-24
Enthralling. That's a pretty strong word to use about a technical manual, but this is no ordinary book about scanning. Everything in here is an utter delight. The history and theory of scanning are clearly explained. Yes, it may well start with a scan, but it ends with rekindling your enthusiasm for computing and graphics in a very big way. If you read it with your system booted up and immerse yourself in the chapters, you can see why these guys are so passionate about their work. Wonderful value for money. Apart from revealing hundreds of ways to turn lacklustre clipart and other sources into money-making graphics, it doubles as a handy guide to the features and versatility of Photoshop. This is a tour de force from two very generous authors. Arriving in the same package as Lynda Weinman's excellent "
", I can't remember when I was last so happy just reading. Thanks!

An excellent introduction to digital film making, this book provides opportunities to gain firsthand experience in every aspect of the movie-making process - from purchasing equipment and gaining a working knowledge of photography and film basics through sketching a storyboard and developing an original movie idea. Starting with tutorials designed to guide readers through the steps required to produce movies, readers are then given instructions for transforming their own unedited home movie footage into entertaining and enjoyable movies. Fun and extraordinarily easy to use, this book inspires creativity while providing the technical know-how needed to launch into a rewarding new hobby or to take the first steps toward a professional digital film making career.
Customer Reviews:
The Best iMovie Book.......2001-11-20
I just got this book and it's the best of all the iMovie books I've used/read. Like "iMovies2 For Dummies," this book includes a very good DVD that includes visual/iMovie examples of the techniques and strategies that it explains in the book. For me, this the DVD is the selling point of the book--even though it is somewhat expensive.
I've always felt that a book talking about video/film production must have an accompanying CD or DVD. It's not just about visual learning, but moreso about providing effective examples of what is being explained about visual techniques. I mean...it only makes sense to talk about video technigues by using actual video examples. It really doesn't make sense to keep using a traditional form of communication (writing) to talk about an emerging and developing form of communication (digital video).
Besides the DVD, I also appreciate how the writers of this book provide strategies for different types of video productions--instructional video, music video, documentary video, home video, and short fictional movies. It's the only book I know of that talks about these types of video productions using iMovie. Thus this book (along with another one titled "The Little Digital Video Book, by Micheal Rubin) to me is for the serious/intermediate digital camera and iMovie users.
Finally, I would just like recommend another new book for those like me who want to one day move beyond iMovie to something more professional: Micheal Wohl's "Editing Technqiues with Final Cut Pro" (Peachpit Press) is a very good book on video editing--no matter what editing software you're using. All three of these books should be on your library reference shelf.
Excellent 'get started' guide..........2001-10-18
Eden and Rory have provided us beginners with an excellent introduction into learning to use our Macs to keep those home movies and vacation videos from rotting on the shelf. The dialogue is clear with just enough technical information to give the 'newbie' a comprehensive picture of how to edit video on the computer with confidence. Most notable are their tutorials, which unlike most books of this nature, go beyond covering the use of the computer and provide excellent pointers on movie-making in general. After reading the book, not only have I been able to make entertaining videos through the editing techniques they describe, but my original footage has improved as well through their guidance on how to use my DV camera to get the best results. Thanks guys!!

This is a FABULOUS, educational art book that is perfect for homeschoolers, art teachers, or anyone interested in learning about and experimenting with some of the styles of various masters. Rather than being chronolgoical, this book is structured by artistic subjects:
1. People
2. Landscapes
3. Sports and Leisure
4. Still Life
5. Animals
and each chapter provides about 10 different projects. Each project highlights a famous painting, and then provides instructions for a piece of art that uses the famous painting as a stylistic jumping point. From ancient cave art to surrealist modern art, artists of all ages are represented. Some are highlighted in more than one section, like Monet.
We've done several of these projects and I am considering starting an art co-op or summer camp using this book as the spine.
One more note, this book is full color and beautiful to look at. Another book, Discovering Great Artists, has very good content but the pages are black and white and it doesn't show samples of the famous artists' work. Discovering Great Artists does, however, provide nice biographical sketches. I own both books, but refer to Art For Fun far more frequently.
I highly, highly recommend this book. My toddler got hold of this book and tore at least a dozen pages to shreds. I could not bear to lose even a single page of content of this book and I spent considerable time piecing and taping the pages back together and into the book. That is NOT something I would have done for just any book!!

More Than Just Handy.......2000-03-31
Hand-shaped Art inspires, and, that is its incredible attribute. Looking at one idea, I was pleasantly bombarded with possibilities, especially, creative, interactive bulletin board ideas and writing assignments. Too many teachers fill bulletin boards with glossy posters. This book lets the children participate.
Layout and art are superb, simple, ready to use, and that, my friend, saves time. You will be glad you spent the money on this book for it is full of ideas you can't see until your imagination takes over.
Take, for example, one hand makes a ship's sail, but what a journey it will be when you include travel plans in creative writing, science of the stars and the ocean, attendance count, lunch count, classroom managment, and scary creatures bordering the bulletin board. I saw a sail made from one hand and then...See what I mean? Keep a pen handy for all the ideas that will flood your landscape. You'll never go back to glossy, boring posters again.

Excellent resource for young writers.......2003-08-01
The book examines with great care paragraph structure, and delineates clearly the writing process. Paragraphs to Essays is an excellent resource to help students develop and build step-by-step writing skills. It also includes examples of various techniques of essay style to promote critical thinking and discussion in classroom. I highly recommend it.
