Good Ideas .......2007-09-08
I'm pretty much a beginner beader. I've been beading for about two years. Primarily I make bracelets. Often, when trying to use someone's pattern for a bracelet, I get stuck trying to make the clasp. Either I don't have the right beads on hand or I just can't follow what the pattern says. That's when I turn to this little book. I wouldn't be without it. There is a lot of info in here for beginners, but there are also a lot of ideas for finishing your piece. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a little reminder of the simpler ways to finish your pieces, or for someone who needs some "how to" instruction.
Should be "seed beads" in the title.......2007-06-20
I purchased this book based on the 4 star review ratings and the title. While this is a beatiful book with many great pictures, there is very little on making your own findings. It is mostly about seed beads, something I am not very intersted in. There are also lots of purchased findings, but even a novice like me knows how to use a purchased clasp! If you want to learn how to make your own findings, buy another book. Bead on a Wire is much better and great for begineers.
Findings & Finishings: A Beadwork How to Book.......2007-06-07
Very good book with many findings options; however, I had expected more examples of creating my own findings
Comprehensive.......2007-05-09
This has a very complete complement of the various finding and finishes for all types of jewelry. The instructions were well written and diagrammed. Not a book I would recommend to beginners, but for someone with some experience in beading.
Finding & Finishings: A Beadwork How-To Book.......2007-01-19
I was felt this book is only good for a beginner. And unless you want seed bead projcts with bulky seed beed togles well you may want another book. This book clearly demonstrates things like crimp beads, so if that's what you want this may be helpful to you

Excellent photos, but strange mix of styles with limited instruction..........2007-04-10
Calling these designs "contemporary" is a bit of a stretch. A number of the projects are contemporary, but others are traditional or ancient-style wirework. That said, there are some beautiful projects in this book and they are beautifully photographed. However, there are very few illustrations and the instructions assume an intermediate level of ability. I think beginners would have a tough time with most of the projects in this book. I recommend Bead On A Wire: Making Handcrafted Wire and Beaded Jewelry.
okay but rehash of previously published.......2006-06-20
first - the cover seems to have changed - mine has a pair of wire wrapped earrings -secondly, several of the pieces show have been published elsewhere, in magazines . when I buy a hardbound book, I'm assuming it's going to be all new material - or that the publishers will be honest enough to indicate that pieces in it are previously published.

Great book!.......2007-03-12
This is a great step-by-step 'how-to' book. The explanations and pictures are very detailed. I feel like I am prepared and know everything I need to know to get started making glass beads!
All the instructions you'll ever need for a great prize.......2007-02-04
I've been making glass beads for 3 years now, and recently showed a friend how to make glass beads. He picked it up right away, and next time I saw him he was definetly not an amateur anymore. I wanted to find a book that gave more then just beginners instructions, and showed many techniques in a clear and simple way. After having looked at many (much more expensive) books I found this one. It had it all! Helpfull hints (hot tips)and exciting techniques for years of fun to come, as well as simple, easy to understand instructions. After giving the book to my friend, I bought it for myself.
Excellent book on bead making.......2006-08-09
The book gave us confidence that we could make glass beads. Production has not started but soon will.
Service was excellent as usual.
The Nature of Glass Beads.......2006-07-03
This is one of two books that you should own if you are serious about learning to make glass beads. The step by steps are easy to follow. The hot tip boxes are a nice way to point out important info. The pictures are clear and to the point, and follow the descriptions of the action. The gallery pictures are spread thoughtout each section of the type of bead work being explained.
A touch that I liked was when a new word is introduced it is in bold print and a clear description of what it is. Giving notice that this is something to be filed for furture use.
They have included a whole load of other artists work for a wide idea of what can be done. the appendix's on the nature of glass and trouble shooting will save a lot of time for the newbe. Also the jewelry basics is a nice touch for the right of the street person. I own it and use it.
The other book you should own is the Kimberley Adams The complete book of glass bead making
Thanks Cindy's for sharing your craft.......2005-07-19

The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present
ASIN: 0887408397 |
Book Description
The various worldwide uses of glass beads, from antiquity to the modern time, are presented in this new book, along with the fascinating evolution of the beadmaking industry. From roots in Asian and African glassmaking, the European beadmaking industry is shown to have developed in response to political and economic factors of international trade and keen businessmen who saw potential profits, 475 color photographs, illustrate the different styles uses, and patterns of glass beads that originated from or influenced the European industry. Phoenician, Celtic, Viking, Venetian, African, Bavarian, Bohemian, Dutch, French, and Russian styles that were made for symbolic, fashion, magic, and controversial uses are shown. Even today's foiled, flower, mosaic, pearl, bronze, and fancy beads are discussed and shown. As beads play an important role in ornamentation today, this book will be of interest to a wide circle of creative people. The price guide reveals the current collector's market for popular bead types.
Customer Reviews:
Very comprehensive and informative.......1999-06-20
I really devoured this book. The photographs show all the important types of older European beads beautifully, and the text was well researched and written.
I was pleasantly surprised by maps explaining the whereabouts of the beadmakers, having lived in Germany.
This book was written from a highly refined and educated passion.
A well-meant, but flawed attempt........1998-02-09
Ms. Jargstorf's 3rd book on bead research is her most ambitious, and most provocative. She is on the most solid ground when discussing the beads of Germany and Central Europe. Her discussion of ancient beads is problematical, as very few of these are pictured to relate to the text. She offers a great many ideas and theories, but presents very little substantiation. Some of her ideas are just silly, or misinterpretations of history. The photographs are variable in quality and reproduction, are not numbered, and often do not enhance the text. The "Value Guide" is given in British Pounds Sterling, and is therefore not very useful. The most interesting beads are merely said to be "rare"--and no value given. As such, this section is almost pointless. I recommend this book, but only if the reader remembers that it has serious flaws, and is spurred to do some cross-referencing to other sources of information.

Very dissapointed beader.......2007-03-12
I ordered this book believing that I was really going to learn new ways or get fresh ideas for jewelry, but I was very dissapointed to find out I was not. Some of the projects looked very interesting, but the instructions lack clear explanation and some of the pictures were confusing. It seem to be the photo of the same step of the project. Not recommend, unless you have a good experience with many techniques. I consider myself to be a experience/diverse jewelry maker, and this book certanly won't explain or shown me new Ideas.

Learn the intriguing technique of bead weaving and put your newfound skills to work with these two dozen projects, ranging in design from echoes of Victoriana to Southwestern styles. Using the back stitch, netting, brick stitch, edging, peyote, and split-loom methods, you'll create cabochon necklaces, beaded collars, dangly earrings, amulet bags, and other becoming pieces of jewelry. If you're new to the craft, you may find each chapter's troubleshooting section particularly helpful in determining what might have gone wrong and how to salvage it. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Not for seed bead starters.......2003-04-09
This is not a starter book even though bead stitch techniques are shown much-enlarged in photographs. Jeanette's book provides an excellent springboard for the intermediate to advanced beader. The projects use seed beads and you will be required to be as competent with thread tension as you are with netting, brick stitch and peyote stitch. Are you bored with too-simple projects? Try some of Jeanette's ideas.
Turning seed beads into jewelry art.......2002-09-29
This is a jewelry making book for those who love to work with seed beads. Each chapter teaches a beading method and then follows with several projects utilizing that method.
The first method is the Back Stitch Technique in which beads are sewn onto a surface into a design, or sewn around the edge of a cabochon (a stone that is rounded and polished on one side, and flat on the other). These designs are then made into necklaces, earrings and pins. Using the Netting Technique, Brick Stitch, and Peyote Stitch, beads are sewn together with needle and thread into lacy designs, or to encase a cabochon, or fringed pouch amulets, or fringed tube-style necklaces. Last is a chapter on using a loom to weave beads into amulets and earrings.
Everything in this book is beautiful and classy, but will appeal to a certain taste. To me they suggest a Native American look. I envision seeing such pieces sold in boutiques at fairly high prices, being that they require closely detailed work and a lot of time.
The instructions are clearly explained and illustrated, and are necessarily very detailed. One needs to be prepared to take the time to follow them closely. However, there is an assumption that you already are familiar with regular jewelry finishing techniques, such as how to end with crimps and clasps. The typical instructions for finishing only say something like: "String a crimping bead....close the crimping bead with crimping pliers and trim off the excess tiger tail" or "use round-nose pliers to make a loop in the head pin. Attach ear wires."
I think this is an excellent book for those with patience and a taste for this kind of look.
Very Disappointed.......2001-08-13
I was extremely disappointed with this book. I was expecting patterns that were more up to date with the times and jewelry that I could wear to work and out to dinner. These patterns weren't difficult to understand but like I said, who would want to wear it out of the house. Possibly little children would wear while playing house or something. Extremely disappointed. Don't waste your money.
A beading banquet........2001-06-14
I'm on my third copy of this book. I've worn one out, loaned one to my daughter and, in order to keep one in hand, am ordering a back-up copy. Basic techniques, simple projects, excellent illustrations and step-by-step instructions in netting, peyote, loom and split loom, and techniques for beading around and incorporating cabouchons into the work are all here. Best of all, every project leads into innovation and creativity for the reader. For me, he simple peyote project has evolved into true life colored butterflies in beads. I heartily recommend this book to beginners and those who know the basics but want to jump ahead into creating their own designs.
A great book.......2000-07-21
As a former student of Mrs. Shanigan's (she teaches a jewelry class at the high school), I found this book very well demonstrated, and easy to follow. A must have!

Customer Reviews:
Not to my taste.......2002-09-13
Having just received this bead jewelry book, I'm very disappointed! I find nothing here to inspire me, and I would rate this book a 1 if it weren't for the good research the author's done on types of beads and materials used in jewelry. Here's what I found in this book; maybe you will see more value in it than I do:
The majority of the book is taken up with descriptions, histories, meanings of beads and materials. There is a section on materials from nature, and necklaces are shown of chicken bones, chili peppers, dried oranges, leaves, etc. A couple pages on shells describes how to cut, file, and drill them for threading. There's a section on how to discern between real and fake materials like coral, amber, jet, ivory, pearls etc. Chapters on metal beads and glass beads spend many pages describing how they are made. A short chapter on polymer clay beads shows examples of items made with them, but gives instructions for only one of the examples.
A following chapter is on the history of jewelry styles in the U.S. throughout the 20th century. Quite a few pictures are shown, but instructions for very few of them are given. The next chapters focus on specific jewelry styles i.e., the liberty necklace, chokers, lacy collar types, and pendants. Although many pictures are shown, some fairly attractive, only one necklace of each photographic display has instructions.
The instructions for the projects are interspersed throughout these chapters, mixed in with the history, etc. of the bead types and styles. For the most part, they are written instructions, rarely accompanied by diagrams, which I think are generally more useful than wordy explanations. The instructions often refer you to see a technique described elsewhere, sometimes in the last chapter of the book which has skimpy instructions for general techniques, along with some diagrams. These are not adequate for beginners.
One somewhat interesting chapter deals with beads used as currency, the symbolic meaning of beads in some cultures, amulets, talismans, healing gems, and documenting your collection of beads. Within this chapter is a page of necklaces made with "junk", and junk it is! The worst of which, in my opinion, is a black cord with the arm of an antique doll hanging on it as a pendant.
On the whole I have found this book to be poorly organized, uninspiring, and useful mainly as an encyclopedic resource if one wants an education about the beads themselves. I have other bead books that do this same job at least as well and also have wonderful projects and instructions.
Bead Jewelry Book.......2000-04-22
Stefany has gone and done it again. Like her earlier book, Beads!, she presents many ideas and techniques, but you can easily see how people's interest in beads has increased in these last ten years. Her layout, sprinkled liberally with sharp photographs by Maggie Campbell Pederson, flows smoothly and invites you ever forward in your study. Stefany does not leave you wondering about the beads in the photos, but clearly labels each piece that is pictured.
Stefany begins in her first chapter by describing beads made from natural materials. The second chapter opens with the work of glass bead artists, then moves on to metal, clay and decorated beads. Techniques and styles of beadwork are in the third chapter, then the fourth chapter is devoted to collectible beads.
The techniques Stefany presents are about the only repetition from the older book Beads! that there are in The Bead Jewelry Book, so I would not discourage you from having both books in your personal library. Start saving your chicken bones; page 13 will show you what to do with them.

Beginner's Luck.......2007-04-10
As a relatively new "beader", this book ranks among my favorite. Clear text and excellent photography provide clear guidance for numerous projects.
The best in my collection of "how-to" books and a great value.
Don't be fooled by my "title", as this also offers more complex beading ideas with step-by-step directions.
pretty pictures, but not very useful.......1998-01-17
The full-color pictures of beads are very inspirational to us bead designers, but this book was short on good illustrations and details. Various knots and findings are mentioned, but never explained. Only the very basic, simple techniques are covered, and not in depth.

A great jewelry book!.......2007-02-06
I borrowed this book from the library and I already like it. There's a ton of different styles,so that you'll never get bored. For the most part the jewelry looks pretty easy to make. There are some harder things too though. The instrucions are easy to follow with black and white pictures to show you how different techniques are done. There's a section in the back that tells you the basic beading tools and beads you need to have, what the tools are used for, techniques, and other helpful stuff. The jewelry is really cute and not old fashioned or anything. A lot of the stuff looks like something you'd buy at a store. I'd give this book 6 stars if I could! If you want to make jewelry I'd diffently buy this book!
Introduce girls to the world of beads.......2003-12-18
This is a book of real beading techniques, using authentic beading supplies to introduce the world of beads and jewelry-making to young teens. There are lots of projects to choose from, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, headbands, ponytail holder, hair clips, etc. Most of the projects use seed beads, but many other beads can be used, too. Techniques show beading on jewelry wire, memory wire, and thread, and the use of standard supplies and tools such as crimp beads, clasps, pliers, and wire cutters.
There is only one true-life photo that shows the finished jewelry, and it's on the cover in color. However, in the photo, the teen model is wearing a ton of jewelry, and the details and styles cannot be seen. The same photo is shown enlarged on the first page of the book in black and white, but still does not give a clear idea of the finished products. The book would be so much more motivating if the projects were shown in color photographs. The black and white illustrated instructions are pretty good, simple and easy enough to follow, but the drawings result in a cartoon-like look, as if this is not an art, but "crafts for kids".
For girls (or boys) who are really interested in learning the art of jewelry beading, the book is really a great start. The book itself is not "pretty" or motivating, so the young beader will need to be able to envision the end product and follow the instructions and diagrams carefully.
