5 out of 5 stars Design of Wood Structures ASD/LRFD.......2007-03-12

Excellent. Very well organized and numerous examples. I have followed this author from 3 of his previous editions of this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Connon typ of Construction.......2007-03-03

Now in it's sixth edition, this book has become the standard text on the design and construction of buildings made of wood. While most wooden structures are residences, the book also covers multi story wooden structures such as apartment houses, commercial buildings with wooden roofs, and to a limited extent newer techniques such as glue-laminate beams.

The book is suitable for use either as a text for a course or as a reference for self study. The sixth edition of this book was promoted by five major developments:

1. Publication of new dual-format (ASD/LRFD) wood design criteria in the 2005 National Design Specification for Wood Construction.

2. Publication of the new Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) Supplement to the NDS.

3. Publication of the comprehensive ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction.

4. Publication and increased adoption nationally of the 2006 International Building Code. ==5. Publication of updated load standards in the 2005 edition of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures.

Book Description

Since it was first published in 1992, this book has become one of the leading anthologies of art theoretical texts in the English-speaking world. This expanded edition includes the fruits of recent research, involving a considerable amount of newly-translated material from the entire period, together with additional texts from the last decades of the twentieth century. The features that made the first edition so successful have been retained:- The volume provides comprehensive representation of the theories which underpinned developments in the visual arts during the twentieth century.- As well as writings by artists, the anthology includes texts by critics, philosophers, politicians, and literary figures.- The content is clearly structured into eight broadly chronological sections, starting with the legacy of symbolism and concluding with contemporary debates about the postmodern.- The editors provide individual introductions to each of the 371 anthologized texts.Material new to this expanded edition includes texts on African art, on the Bauhaus and on the re-emergent avant-gardes of the period after the Second World War. Post-modernist debates are amplified by texts on gender, on installation and performance art, and on the increasing globalization of culture.

3 out of 5 stars just O.K........2007-07-10

my college library had the "feminist art theory" volume from this same series, and i LOVED that book to death.
since i liked that book so much, i thought it would be a good investment to cash in a recent gift certificate on this hefty volume.
i wish that i had gone for the feminist art volume-- it's much more relevant for anyone who is interested in art as political expression... that topic is really not addressed in this anthology.
it's probably still good as a reference if you're going to be writing a lot of papers for standard survey courses covering this time period, though.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable reference book.......2005-08-11

Had I read the reviews about this book, I wouldn't have bought it.
I had to though, for my "Art: Language and Theory" class, in my second year of Graphic Design major. I was shocked with it at first, it's almost 1300 pages, with not a single image in it! It looked extremely dull. But the thing is, I found it extremely useful, and enjoyable to read at times too. It covers art theories in the 20th century, and has texts written by artists, philosophers, polticians and much more.
I now refer to it with every paper I write, every presentation I make and so on. There are also letters and notes in the book by artists such as Cezanne and Matisse, which are delightful to read. I use a dictionary sometimes, but not always, though I agree, the language is hard to comprehend at first glance.
I don't think any art student or teacher could do without this book, I used it as a beginners guide while studying art, and I won't stop using it. Don't be put off when you first get this book, you'll learn to value and appreciate it with little time.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2003-12-28

I used this book for a graduate theory class and ended up reading pretty much all of it. The book provides an excellent overview of the major movements during the past 100 years but also misses out on a lot of the most current trends. I believe there were less than 3 articles dated after 1999. The writings seem to be obscure at times, with the editors trying to draw distant similarites between varying fields. Most of the passages used overly pretentious language, so keep a dictionary nearby. This book is not a beginner guide and it helps to have some knowledge of art history as well as a little world history. A better or easier read would have to be "Theories and Documents of Contemporary Art"...

Sexy, modern, and unabashedly consumer-oriented, Art Deco was a new kind of style, flourishing at a time of rapid technological change and social upheaval. Lacking the philosophical basis of other European design movements, Deco borrowed motifs from numerous sources--Japan, Africa, ancient Egyptian and Mayan cultures, avant-garde European art--simply to create novel visual effects. Art Deco 1910-1939 surveys the sources and development of the popular style with more than 400 color illustrations and 40 chapters by numerous design specialists. The authors track Deco around the globe, from Paris to the United States—-where it got its biggest boost from mass production—-to Northern and Central Europe, Latin America, Japan, India, and New Zealand. The book's broad focus encompasses industrial artifacts (the Hindenburg blimp, the Burlington Zephyr locomotive), as well as architecture, furniture, accessories, fashion, jewelry, typography and poster design. Despite the existence of other prominent artistic movements during the 1920s and '30s, the authors tend to hang the Deco label on virtually any object that portrays the effects of technology or employs color, luxury materials or artificial light in striking ways. It does seem a stretch to include Man Ray's photographs, Sonia Delaunay's textiles and the movie King Kong in the Deco pantheon. But the great strength of Art Deco 1910-1939 is that it reveals the social context of Deco, not just its pretty face. The book accompanies an exhibition (organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London) at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto through January 4, 2004; subsequent venues are San Francisco and Boston. —Cathy Curtis

Book Description

The hottest trend in design at the moment-Art Deco-comes to life in this definitive and comprehensive book. Art Deco swept across the globe during the 1920s and 1930s and created the defining look of the interwar years. In an era of contradictions that encompassed both the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression, it imbued everyday life with elegance and sophistication. It transformed the skylines of cities as diverse as New York and Shanghai and touched the design of everything from Hollywood films to clothing to luxury liners and locomotives. Art Deco was the style of hedonism, of indulgence, and of mass consumption. ART DECO 1910-1939 is the most wide-ranging survey of what created such an utterly distinctive iconography. Nearly 40 essays from leading experts in the field discuss the Art Deco phenomenon-its sources, its varied forms of expression, and the way it refined and redefined itself as it spread throughout the world. With breathtaking illustrations and essays both thought-provoking and scholarly, it will stand as the definitive book on what was, arguably, the most popular style of the 20th century.

Bought it - read it - refer to it as a source and to unashameably copy.
Niggles;
1) No art deco gardens. Is this an ommission or was this branch of human endeavour eschewed by the industrial age?
2) Illustrations of pieces sometimes miss listing the media and all are missing the size.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest book on Art Deco!.......2003-09-12

This book is an absolute triumph. First, it is positively gorgeous - the images just leap off the pages. Second, the essays are more in-depth, engaging, and informative than any other book I've found on the subject. This book discusses every facet of Art Deco as well: it explores the origins at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, goes through the influence in East Asia, Latin America, and South Africa, not to mention Europe. A great chapter on Deco in Hollywood; also explores all of the sources, iconography - and all of this on top of covering every aspect of the movement - ceramics, jewelry, fashion, architecture, glass, photography, graphic design, bookbindings, travel and transport, and so so much more - with stunning visuals. A fantastic read, a great resource, a beautiful work, and an absolute MUST for anyone interested in the subject! Well worth the money, and a fantastic addition to any library. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The first and last word on Deco........2003-09-07

A sumptuous coffee-table book of this exuberant art style and I think it could well become the standard book on the subject. The forty essays are divided into four sections, Sources and Iconography, 1925 Paris Exhibition, Spread of Deco and finally Deco World, and I liked the way, especially in Sources and Iconography, that the authors explain how various art styles were moulded into deco art which culminated in the very influential 1925 Paris show.

I thought the last two sections were a fascinating coverage of how Art Deco spread around the world, mainly as architecture and fashion, though in Europe also as a fine art style. In North America, it influenced a huge range of commercial products. Perhaps this was the only art form that was truly democratic in that it was available (as streamlining) to be seen or bought on any Main Street across the Nation.

The design and printing are excellent. Many of the photos, especially color, are presented whole page, the rest are all well sized, and they all have captions. The back of the book has a very comprehensive bibliography, fortunately listed as relating to each chapter rather than just an alphabetical list, the index is divided into two, Names and Subject. I was very impressed with this attention to detail and with the excellent text, images and production surely `Art Deco 1910-1939' will be read for many years to come.

    Book Description

It's the ultimate escape fantasy: Trade in the rat race for life on a tropical island and all the languid luxury that it evokes. For India Hicks and David Flint Wood, the dream became reality when, after high-profile careers-she as a fashion model, he as an advertising executive-the couple left the city behind for the Bahamas. Five years and three children later, the husband-and-wife team have impeccably restored three houses and one hotel. Fusing traditional European design with Asian, African, and Caribbean influences, the resulting interiors reflect their love of intense color and their keen sense of style-inherited on India's side from her father, the renown interior designer David Hicks, and further enhanced by the family's travels.

In Island Life, the secrets of these sumptuous, unique homes-used as locations for Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, and Vogue magazine, among others-are revealed in intimate detail. With panoramic color photographs, David Loftus captures not only the eclectic combinations of antiques, flea market finds, and modern furnishings, but also the overall ambiance of the tropics. For those who share David and India's dream, this is where to start planning.

You may or may not receive this book. Like another reviewer, my order was never completed. I ordered it THREE times, waited 6 weeks each time...and then was informed my order was cancelled because it was unavailable. The last time I ordered it, I called them and they "assured" me it was "IN STOCK". Later, I was notified it was unavailable once again. Its bizarre! Don't hold your breath waiting for this one. It may be a great book, but I will apparently never know.

5 out of 5 stars A book to take you away from everyday life.......2007-01-03

I found this book an absolute dream. The pictures are superb and the text is so unpretentious and simple. I loved the way the family has created such a simple and beautiful house (or houses) unlike so many of the gaudy mansions of the rich that inhabit the Bahamas.
I have visited Harbor Island and the lifestyle appears so slow and easy that it really appears to be a paradise. India points out though that there is a price to be paid. The climate does make it difficult to maintain property.
In summary, I loved the book, the words and the pictures and I read it from cover to cover in a little under two days. It left we wanting a simpler, more balanced life and sunshine!

    5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2006-07-31

I find myself reaching for this book over and over again. In it the authors generously give us a glimpse of the life they have made on a small island in the Bahamas. With a lot of hard work and no pretension, they have gotten it mostly just right. Their houses are neither overdone nor underdone, but pleasing to the eye, soothing and liveable. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Never got item - it was unavailable.......2006-07-30

Never got item - waited several weeks and then was notified.

3 out of 5 stars Nice to look at....PERIOD.......2004-06-27

The cover was very appealing. First impressions etc;. The inside photos even more so. The writing however sounded like the ramblings of a spoiled child living in an unreachable reality sometimes and at other times, the snobbery of an aristocracy only appreciated in the mind of the writer and those who really believe that paradise can only be created by the writer.

I live in the Bahamas and so yes I have a paradise of my own, but does anyone really care about 'my personal paradise' so much that they would read about it. I think not. The thing that makes simple beauty, well simply beautiful is simply leaving it alone.

Final thot; Nice to look at.....PERIOD.

3 out of 5 stars Nancy Lancaster:English County House Style.......2007-02-09

Book was not what I expected. Book was recommended by a decorator who said Nancy Lancaster was her inspiration so I was expecting more decorating and less biography-like book. It does make an excellent coffee table presentation!!

5 out of 5 stars A classic tale of high style.......2007-01-18

This book is sumptuous and entertaining. Martin Wood weaves a fascinating story of the founder of English County House Style. If you love biography, decorating, and history along with beautiful photographs, renderings, and paintings of exquisitely decorated rooms, this book will fit the bill! A lavish feast for sight and soul.

5 out of 5 stars United States to Great Britain: Shared Style.......2006-08-30

This book takes the reader from the style of America in the early years of the 20th century to the life she created in Britain. Many aspects of style were shared in the two countries, but many are unique to each. It is interesting how Nancy Lancaster blended the two worlds into a grand country style that was appreciated by both. Her childhood home in Virginia was her inspiration throughout her life and helped set the style she was so well known for.

5 out of 5 stars Adrift in the Cozy, Comfortable, Tasteful English Tradition!.......2006-04-10

Martin Wood is an excellent biographer and chronicler of style and in this richly illustrated monograph on Nancy Lancaster he makes use of his own credentials as a garden designer and interior designer to praise the virtues of a lady few of us know.

Nancy Lancaster gained her reputation as a gardener and designer of gardens whose only clear rival has been Gertrude Jekyll. But Martin Wood increases her stature by naming her the creator of the English country house style. His writing style is fluid, humorous, tender and informative, giving all the biographical data about Lancaster's heritage, youth, and life in a manner that makes what seems to be a picture essay become a page-turner novel!

Lancaster devoted herself to recreating the English Country atmosphere, though she was a born and bred American. Her own various homes as well as those of people who engaged her expertise demonstrate how even the most modest dwelling can breed the charm of the English Country house. Her gardens are like dream sequences out of Arthur Rackham and her taste in balancing room space with the gracious furniture and window treatments and light is impeccable. The Book is filled with some very lush photography that takes the time to scrutinize her concepts as well as pleasure the eye over her accomplishments. This is far more than a design book. This is a book about a life and how it extended into creating a personal world of quiet dignity and beauty. Grady Harp, April 06

Buy the book if you like, but for me an ABAP programmer w/10+ years experience it was just fluff. A couple hundred pages of hearing how great Netweaver is and what it could do, w/o actual hands-on is not IMO what a 'Dummies' book is meant to be. The included CD was even less.

As a business executive trying to get my arms around the technology, this was exactly what I needed. It will be valuable reference for the future, as well.

1 out of 5 stars worst book i ever read.......2005-09-10

1)I might have sat with the book if not for their jokes
2)The terminolgy used in definitions and in examples is different.
3)Repeating stuff that is not at all useful.
4)The paragraghs of repition wont work but i dont understand how the pictures also dont work
5)I sincerely request the authors to stop writing text books.

3 out of 5 stars Good content, if you're patient and willing to sift for it.......2005-07-26

While the book's attempt at humor irritates me, I still manage to find good information. The author covers a lot of material. Some of it is way too simplistic. Some of it is not deep enough in my opinion. I've picked it up a few times and put it back down, but won't toss it. That being said, I'm still looking for seomthing better (SAP Press doesn't have anything actually good either, despite some new titles).

1 out of 5 stars The presentation stinks.......2005-07-20

I got this book to get myself more educated on what SAP Netweaver is all about. I've been doing SAP consulting for over ten years but, like others, feel like I'm not up-to-date with the latest SAP Technologies and products.
After carrying this book around with me for over two months, I'm still not done with it. This is because I keep on getting irritated when I read this book and then I put it down. And I'm not easily irritated. I think I'm at the point where I'm going to put it in a box (with many other books that I DID read) and read something else instead. This book is just wasting my time.

Here's my problems with this book:
    1. The writers try to be funny/entertaining all the time. I do like humor, but they do it way, way too much and they are not funny at all.
    2. Some of the things they discuss are simple, basic, worthless information that any IT person knows.
    3. They make Netweaver seem easy, all-good and the future of IT. I love SAP and I think Netweaver is probably a good platform. But I think this book is overselling it and making unproven claims that may mislead less-experienced people.

This book could have been good if the (useful) content was offered in a different way. Some suggestions if a second edition materializes.
    1. Don't try to be funny. Just present the material.
    2. Leave out all the unnecessary, useless information. You're not obligated to go over 400 pages. I'd prefer to read a thinner book with just the relevant information.

I don't always give the lowest rating for things I don't like. And this book does have some useful information here and there. But the presentation is just so terrible to me that it makes whatever good it has worthless.

    Book Description

Until now, the field has lacked a concise, down-to-earth guide for people who must make effective maps using GIS. Making Maps is visually engaging, clear, and compelling--exactly how maps should be if they are to meet your goals. Featuring over 300 maps and other figures, including instructive examples of both good and poor design choices, the book covers everything from locating and processing data to making decisions about layout, map symbols, color, and type. For students, professionals, and others who want to make better maps, this is an essential, uniquely helpful resource.

3 out of 5 stars Not very comprehensive.......2007-08-05

This was not quite the book I was looking for. It doesn't cover the topics very comprehensively. I was hoping for a book which talked more specifically about map design(i.e. colors, placements and such). The book is ok if you have never read about this topic before. For me who has read about this topic before it only took about 2-3 hours to read it through.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-04-05

I'm newly employed with GIS. I use ArcMap to make maps of properties for a real estate developer. This book was nice in many ways. It is very informative regarding styles, helping me create professional looking maps at my job. It was detailed enough to be informative, but was not overloaded by any means. The book was a quick read. It did not bog me down in boring details. It was well written, well organized, and well designed. I like the book and recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars a real gem.......2006-05-18

This book should be required reading for anyone who is allowed to make maps with a GIS. It's actually a pretty quick read (3-4 hours for me) thanks to its concise and tightly organized text set in context of some very clean and simple graphics. There is even a healthy dash of humor (so welcome in technical writing), genuinely funny but always in service of the text.

Read this book to avoid the classic mistakes that all neophyte mapmakers commit.

4 out of 5 stars Why make maps.......2006-01-16

What makes this book exception is not its clear design and simple text. It's a book about making maps, after all. One would hope the design was adequate. What distinguishes this book from its competition is that, implicitly if not always explicitly, it is about using maps, the arguments maps make. From the first page, a First Nation historical map, the argument is clear: Maps make arguments and making maps is about the best way to make arguments.
That's something worth seeing and reading. Design details are available in many places. This argument is not.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective.......2005-12-28

While I do a lot of GIS work and never took a cartography course when I started my career in geography research work. After searching through the local geography dept library, and searching the university bookstore for something simple, practical, and effective, I have to say "Making Maps" works great.

My background lies in biological and environmental work so there's quite a few times where I've been asked to make maps from a variety of different data sources for different audiences (i.e. scientific conferences, presentation diagrams, screenshots for emails, etc). Krygier & Wood's book effectively covers numerous cartographic principles while keeping in mind all the changes in the modern GIS world: i.e. the technological advances in mapping and geographic software, professional printing requirements, and the use of color in maps and how it may "play out" to different cultures around the world.

I really enjoyed reading this book over the holidays and found a lot of great mapping tips and techniques in it. It's a very strong visual guide and it's a lot more challenging to read than ESRI's simple intro guides. It's also more fun to read than a cartographic textbook! The list of other references at the end of the chapter are a good bonus.

But my favorite line in the whole book had to be on page 212 (choropleth maps) when the authors recommend to "please use your brain when making maps". Hilarious! There's gems like this in a few places through the book. A good read for the graphic artist in every cartographer and academically solid. It'll be a reference book on my workshelf for years to come.

    Book Description

What more appealing scene can you conjure up on a wintry day than a pair of comfortable armchairs pulled up to a crackling fire while wisps of smoke curl from the chimney top? All your senses are in use--the sight of the flickering flames, the sound of the crackling logs, the warmth on your face, and the fragrance and taste of wood smoke. The hearth truly is the essential core of every home, whether it is an actual fireplace or merely a mantel displaying the treasures and trophies of intertwined lives. Long past the days of strictly utilitarian purpose, fireplaces and stoves are a design feature in their own right. They are available in an array of styles, sizes, and colors; offer a variety of fuel choices; and feature benefits beyond mere aesthetics, including heat and cooking. Fireplaces and heat sources are also widely found in many rooms throughout the house, including the family or living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, as well as outdoors. And the latest innovations in fireplace and stove technologies make having one no longer an expensive proposition.

While the building market is seeing growth in the fireplace market, so too is the remodeling marketplace. In fact, many homeowners are refacing their existing fireplace, upgrading their wood fireplace to gas, or simply installing a new faux fireplace where there wasn't one before. In this book readers will find hundreds of examples of all types of indoor fireplaces--from wood to gas, freestanding, and ventless--and stoves, both wood and pellet. In addition to gorgeous photos of a full range of fireplace styles, materials, and décor for indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves, solid information on practical design considerations--maintaining a fireplace or stove, remodeling an existing fireplace, safety, converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas, and the like--are explained in detail, making this the only book on the market to offer the breadth of content on both the design and practical components of all types of the latest indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves. Aesthetic and practical design considerations for hearths and mantels, built-ins and storage, lighting, and accessories like screen, brooms, and bellows are also covered. A thorough glossary, resources, and index provide reference-like information.

    5 out of 5 stars A Design Guide and a Picture Book.......2007-02-03

Fire places seem evoke some kind of hidden memories out of our distant path when the fire at the mouth of the cave kept the tigers away. This has become so important that even apartments now seem to come with fire places.

This book, as is usual with this publisher is a beautifully illustrated, beautifully printed collection of fire places that range from a simple rock lined fire pit out in the yard to fire places that are the design center of the house, wood stoves that meet the new EPA regulations, to antiques that may have come from grandmothers house.

Besides the beautiful photography, this book also includes design tips, and the regulations that come from building codes. And there are discussions of more types of fire places than you could ever imagine without seeing it.

I got this book because my house does not have a fire place, and it's the next major extension that I plan to add. This book answered all the questions that I had, except do I want something indoor or outside. We have a long season for entertaining outside.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful book.......2007-07-18

Very good book. Basically made me realise I was biting off more than I could chew - think I'll try a garage first! I kept on hearing from log building forums how cheap it was to build a log house, it was sobering to hear from an expert that this might not necessarily be the case. Made me approach this idea a bit more rationally.

    5 out of 5 stars extremely informative.......2007-05-01

It is obvious to me that log construction is more than just a craft. I was not aware how fast things are changing in the art of log construction. The author seems to be on the cutting edge of log building technology. There is a lot to more to know before you start your own log home than I was aware of. I am now going into it with a much greater understanding of the process than I had before. I will start mine this summer. It will be beautiful. thank you Robert.

5 out of 5 stars Log Construction Manual.......2007-04-10

This is without a doubt, the finest book on the topic. Prior to purchasing this book, one complete shelf of my bookcase was taken up by books on the topic. While some are enjoyable to read and / or present great photos, I could have filled the "hands on" and technical side of such construction with this book. During my first few readings of the book (and I continue to read it) I kept asking myself "why didn't anyone else think of that" or something along the lines of "really glad I didn't build before reading this book or I'd have been in trouble". I've been lucky enough enough to exchange a few personal e-mails with Mr Chambers and can vouch for the fact that he really cares for the craft. This is not an example of someone simply after your dollar. Do yourself a favour, start with this book. You'll be glad that you did.

5 out of 5 stars Log Construction Manual.......2007-02-11

The best book I have read on the topic. This author is very detail oriented. I implemented the information imedeately into my cabin construction project. If you are planning on building, this is a must read.

I read this and realized something. This guy knows everything about log homes but hey I don't want to live in a dark wooden box. Moved on to timber frame.
