How am I supposed to paint??!.......2007-06-26
How am I supposed to get my kitchen cabinets painted if I cannot put down this book! As a result of reading only the first three chapters, I already have my first weeks of writing planned for when school starts in August! I loved this book!
She needs to practice what she preaches.......2006-02-05
Spandel has done her homework and has used the trait system extensively in her classroom, which gives her much credibility. However, a well-organized reference book puts all the information about one topic in one place. Unfortunately, information about each of the traits is scattered around the book, making it extremely annoying. I'm sure she could have done better, and we all hope a new edition will prove she can even use the trait of organization herself. Let's practice what we preach.
Need help with 6-Traits Writing?-.......2005-07-21
Do you ever wonder how to score writing samples from the students in your classroom? This is the book for you! Actual writing samples are presented and evaluated. Ideas for lessons are also included. This is a must-have resource for those teaching the 6-traits of writing !
Beyond test taking, create life-long writers with voices!.......2004-10-26
Once again,in her fourth and finest revision of Creating Writers, Vicki shows us how to create more effective,independent writers.Using volumes of practice papers, scores of focused, creative trait lessons, and visits into trait-and-process based classrooms, Creating Writers helps all teachers envision how to design our own instruction models to defeat test anxiety!
You'll find her wise, witty comments on papers invaluable, her linking of reading to writing insightful, and her compassion for struggling writers inspirational. You'll welcome her ideas for teaching traits to beginners and how to use comments, conferences and peer response to support writers. She practices what we know; the source of all best writing topics, the "well" from which we can draw our real writing is our own lives.
Sometimes we need reminders that writing -and teaching writing -can be joyful! Creating Writers,4th edition,and Vicki provide that vision, as they have for me for 20 years. Keep this book on your desk!
Creating Young Writers: Essential to ALL Primary Teachers.......2004-02-13
As a consultant in over 15 schools, this book is a permanent fixture in my briefcase. I take it with me when visiting all primary teachers for good reason: it is integral to improving writing for young students. I've read mostly all of Vicki Spandel's work, and this one is yet another gem. It provides a cornucopia of essential information about the six traits of writing - student samples with valuable commentaries, concrete lessons to use immediately, teaching suggestions, assessments, and more. What is also noteworthy is that this book is versatile. It can be used for those not yet familiar with the six traits, those still experimenting with it, and those well-versed who want more tools. Bravo, Vicki, on another vital resource for teachers so they can elicit the best from their students.

This book is a lifesaver!.......2004-06-24
I cannot say enough about this book! Last summer, I was asked to teach a creative writing class for incoming high school freshmen. I panicked--until I found this manual. What a lifesaver! Filled with fabulous ideas and neatly organized into 75 lessons (I use 3 per day during 2 hour classes), this book is easy to use, and my students love it. It is challenging enough for gifted writers, but it encourages reluctant writers as well. All of them have fun. Students move through journaling, freewriting, revisions, even publishing booklets of their own poetry and prose. Solid learning; encouragement of peer editing; great progression of difficulty levels. You will not be disappointed in this book. A lot of hard work went into it--thanks to Ms. Brandvik.
Writing process.......2002-05-04
A great kit for beginers in the process of writing very meaningful for EFL teachers
Very Helpful!.......2000-06-06
As an English teacher, I had tried to institute peer review into my classes but was never successful until I read this book. Brandvik provides 75 sequential writing lesson plans that built a writing community in my classroom. My students now know how to serve as peer editiors for their fellow students.
A good portion of the book's assignments focus on narrative type writing though some space is devoted to poetry writing and word play. I was wishing for some of the lessons to focus on other modes--persuasive, expository, etc. However, after teaching a couple of units from Brandvik's book, I was able to apply her techniques to my own units. Her modeling was a good teacher!

Teaching Writing.......2007-07-07
I already had an earlier addition of this book that I borrowed from a friend because I needed it for one of my graduate classes. Since books are soooo expensive we share whenever we can, but I really found this book to be useful so I bought my own copy. I highly recommend it for K-5 teachers...even upper grade teachers could benefit from it. It's full of ideas for writing in every genre. An excellent resource.

I received within a week. I was very happy with the service. Thank you
Super Book.......2005-10-17
Certainly a good buy. This book is practical and inspirational. How education has advanced since the days I was in elementary school!
Good Stuff.......2005-10-01
This book is an excellent resource for teachers. It is full of great ideas and of lessons for writing. It is also very helpful to those teachers who are reluctant to have their students write daily. The feature that I like best is that the author includes great trade book lists to assist the teacher in modeling good writing.

Book Description
This unique book engages future teachers in the processes of creativity to encourage creative growth and participation in their classrooms. It emphasizes process, rather than product, so teachers learn that once they tap into their own creativity they are better equipped to help children participate in the creative process. The author's goal is to shift readers from depending on prescribed activities and products to a more secure awareness of everyone's ability to participate in the creative process, regardless of the product. Discusses noteworthy studies in music and movement, art, creative dramatics, and literature. Highlights the potential of multicultural arts as a resource for creative expression and awareness. Includes a section on national standards for visual and performing arts and the President's committee on the arts and humanities. Addresses the eight intelligence (naturalist) and discusses all eight intelligences in each chapter. For future teachers of the creative arts.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for teachers and students.......2006-01-21
I found this book to be excellent for the classroom. The author supports teaching art to children by grounding her methods in current learning theories. I have had students tell me that they enjoyed the many stories of real classroom experiences that the author shares throughout the book. It is a good resource and inspiration for those who want to teach art to children.
BORING.........2002-05-15
I had this book for a curriculum and instruction class and I could not stay awake for more than two pages. The chapters are extremely long and often repeat the same information.

Book Description
In keeping with the spirit of the first edition, Teaching ESL Composition: Purpose, Process, and Practice, Second Edition presents pedagogical approaches to the teaching of ESL composition in the framework of current theoretical perspectives on second language writing processes, practices, and writers.
The text as a whole moves from general themes to specific pedagogical concerns. A primary goal is to offer a synthesis of theory and practice in a rapidly evolving community of scholars and professionals. The focus is on providing apprentice teachers with practice activities that can be used to develop the complex skills involved in teaching second language writing. Although all topics are firmly grounded in reviews of relevant research, a distinguishing feature of this text is its array of hands-on, practical examples, materials, and tasks, which are presented in figures and in the main text. The synthesis of theory and research in a form that is accessible to preservice and in-service teachers enables readers to see the relevance of the field's knowledge base to their own present or future classroom settings and student writers.
Each chapter includes:
*Questions for Reflection--pre-reading questions that invite readers to consider their own prior experiences as students and writers and to anticipate how these insights might inform their own teaching practice;
*Reflection and Review--follow-up questions that ask readers to examine and evaluate the theoretical information and practical suggestions provided in the main discussion; and
*Application Activities--a range of hands-on practical exercises, such as evaluating and synthesizing published research, developing lesson plans, designing classroom activities, executing classroom tasks, writing commentary on sample student papers, and assessing student writing.
The dual emphasis on theory and practice makes this text appropriate as a primary or supplementary text in courses focusing on second language writing theory, as well as practicum courses that emphasize or include second language writing instruction or literacy instruction more generally.
New in the Second Edition:
*updated research summaries consider new work that has appeared since publication of the first edition;
*revised chapter on research and practice in the use of computers in second language writing courses covers recent developments;
*streamlined number and type of Application Activities focus on hands-on practice exercises and critical analysis of primary research; and
*revisions throughout reflect the authors' own experiences with the text and reviewers' suggestions for improving the text.

The 9 Rights of Every Writer: A Guide for Teachers
ASIN: 157274748X |
Book Description
The authors explore what is important about effective writing instruction, how it is situated within all the modes of literacy, and "why we do what we do" in writing instruction today. By refocusing on writing process and emphasizing the need for even young students to consider audience, purpose, and genre when writing, K-6 teachers will find an effective road map for enhancing their writing instruction. Also included are staff development activities, exemplars of children's writing, and in the appendices, a variety of practical formative assessments and monitoring forms.

Thinking About How We Teach Writing.......2007-01-07
This book has been invaluable in helping me rethink the management of my writing program. The authors remind us that writing is not a step by step formula, but a social process, in which the writer has a purpose and audience and expects a response from the audience. The text is full of classroom anecdotes, and practical ideas and strategies for teaching and assessing. Would be a great book-study book!

Required Textbook for ESOL Class.......2007-09-28
Even though this text is required for undergrad classes, I don't think it's the best text available. It offers good advice and useful activities, but it focuses mostly on becoming an author in the classroom and not much else. It also doesn't go by chapters, it's mostly divided into units (a little confusing). So I do consider this text helpful, but not the best one available.
Fabulously Rich!.......2005-03-16
Authors in the Classroom: A Transformative Education Process is an amazing resource for today's teachers. This book, wonderfully well written and organized, guides teachers in the process of strengthening the literacy skills of their students through the strengthening of their voices. In the first part of the book the authors walk the teacher through a discussion of transformative education and the role of creative dialogue in the classroom. The second part of the book is focused on the journey of writing as it reflects areas of exploration such as Recognizing Human Qualities, Strengthening Self-Identity, Building Communities, The Power of Transformation, Understanding the Past - Creating the Future, and Learning to Know. Ada and Campoy vividly demonstrate through the use of beautiful student, teacher, and family examples how the communities of the classroom and home can be merged through the medium of written expression. Perhaps most important, they show us how powerful the telling our own stories can be - how our stories can be shared to create an affirming and fabulously enriched learning environment in our classrooms for students, their families, and teachers.
An unusually well written and organized educational guide.......2003-09-14
Collaboratively written by Alma Flor Ada (Director of the Center for Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults, University of San Francisco) and F. Isabel Campoy (a children's books author and language acquisition expert), Authors In The Classroom: A Transformative Education Process is an unusually well written and organized educational guide aimed expressly at classroom teachers seeking to improve their own writing skills. Enthusiastically promoting creative literacy among students, teachers, and parents alike, Authors In The Classroom creatively and informatively explores means for educators to hone their own writing talents, as well as encouraging the students to live up to their fullest potential. An excellent, reflective, "user friendly" guide, Authors In The Classroom is an invaluable contribution to academic Education Studies reference collections.

In Teaching Composition As A Social Process, educator and scholar Bruce McComiskey advocates a social approach to teaching writing while opposing composition instruction that relies on cultural theory for content. This last is because relying on cultural theory for content often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. McComiskey persuasively argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers not to neglect the linguistic and rhetorical levels of composing, but rather strengthen them with attention to the social contexts and ideological investments that pervade both the processes and products of writing. Teaching Composition As A Social Process is enthusiastically recommended reading for teachers at all grade levels of composition development, and has great insightful values for school administrators and curriculum developers as well.
