Book Description
Inspired by his experiences as a French military officer and attache in China, Greece, Southeast Asia, and Algeria, the author realized the "need for a compass" in the suppression of insurgency, and he set out to "define the laws of counterinsurgency warfare, to deduce from them its principles, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics." His book provides an analysis of how to countermine insurgency and the elements that might hinder its defeat. Written in 1964, the book in its new printing is as relevant now as it was 40 years ago-providing a template for the defeat of today's insurgents and terrorists.

Excellent, with one caveat.......2007-09-04
I will not repeat the good things said in previous reviews on this work, as they cover it well, and the credentials of the previous reviewers in several instances should also speak for themselves.
Galula's book is a very good effort for trying to look at the lessons of counterinsurgency objectively. In reading reviews and other materials on the book, as well as talking to people about it, I fear, however, that Galula's work is often taken out of its historical context, which is dangerous. Galula's essay, like Roger Trinquier's "Modern Warfare," need to be seen in the context of the French guerre revolutionnaire, developed first in Indochina between 1945-1954 (French defense journals at the time are replete with the writings of officers developing the school of guerre revolutionnaire), and carried over to Algeria between 1954-1962. The guerre revolutionnaire school argued that counterinsurgents needed to not just understand the insurgents, but fight a counterinsurgency using the tactics and strategy of insurgency. The intellectual starting point was Mao. The guerre revolutionnaire school and its intellectual heritage in the French Army goes a long way toward explaining many of the excesses and brutal tactics used in Algeria. The four generals who tried to overthrow de Gaulle in April 1961 were some of the guerre revolutionnaire's most vocal disciples.
Thus, while Galula's book is invaluable, I fear it being taken out of context of the guerre revolutionnaire school of thought in the French army during the 1950s. There is unfortunately very little on it in English as well, which is part of the problem. For anyone wishing to use Galula's precepts in counterinsurgency or to understand the nature of counterinsurgency, please make sure you learn more about the French military in Indochina and Algeria and the context from which Galula formed his ideas of counterinsurgency.
Must read.......2007-09-01
This a must read for officers, soldiers, and thinkers to understand the framework and theory of the relationship between an insurgency and its counter insurgency. A bit dated, but most of the information still appears to carry its value till today.
Yogi Berra was right. It's déjà vu all over again........2007-07-25
Having lived through the 60s and Viet Nam, I can recognize much of what is in the news today - just change the names. The type of war we now face has had many names: revolutionary war, counterinsurgency, counter terrorism, guerrilla warfare, asymmetric warfare, and so on. One size does not fit all, and it would be a fool who believes that there is a one-for-one match between conflicts. It would also be a fool who ignores the practical, political, and theoretical basis for such conflicts and the extent to which they share characteristics.
This book addresses more the military end. This is not in any way a criticism. This book is very well written and well worth the reading. At the time it was written, armies were attempting to build a doctrinal base to use in such conflicts. In doing so, they also concentrated on the military. Again, this is not in any way a criticism, for doing so is their job. The political aspects of such conflicts are, properly, the job of the civilian leadership.
The Iraq conflict, and the war in Afghanistan, have brought the subject again to the world's attention. My personal opinion is that many are now busy re-inventing the wheel.
For anyone interested in the subject, many books are available. The best of the recent publications is General Sir Rupert Smith's The Utility of Force. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2007. Carl von Clausewitz edited and translated by Michael Howard and Peter Paret. On War. is a given, as is Sun Tzu, and Mao Tse-Tung's, Selected Military Writings. Peking, PRC: Foreign Language Press, 1966. Smith gives the best account of the need for combining all factors in a situation such as we find ourselves in now. Wesley Clark also does a good job of describing the complicated nature of modern conflicts.
Other books are listed below, in no particular order. The (H) and (P) indicate if the book is hardcover or paperback.

Old Ways work.......2007-05-09
Some things never change, like an insurgency and how to fight them effectively! And due to he complex wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Galula's classic, written based on his experiences in the Algerian war during the 1950's, has been resurrected. A French Army Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Galula lays out in pretty good detail the necessary methods and procedures for counter-insurgency operations. Galula's clearly articulates that the counter-insurgency requires a methodical approach to defeating the enemy by aggressively controlling and isolating the population, developing a good intelligence program in order to insure to the same population that they are safe from reprisal from the insurgents. Kinetic attacks; killing people and destroying places will only alienate the people that you are trying to win over. I recommend this book for all who are trying to figure out how to defeat an insurgency. If I was a young or old military or State department official I would read this book and act on it's recommendations.

An easy and fun to read book, based on real life examples and experiences. While reading it, I got many tips from the book and apply them in my onw work.
project management with your feet on the ground and your heart on it.......2007-05-24
I really love this book!! I've read many books about how to run projects, to keep teams motivated, to be an effective leader, and I think this book compiles all of the above, plus it gives you a grounded point of view. There are no promises, only hard work and ways to improve your performance.
I've used some of the recommendations included in chapter 13: How to make things happen and, although is not a guarantee of success, I have accomplished some of my most difficult projects with it and the ones I didn't, at least I know why.

highly practical and thorough coverage.......2007-05-12
Reading this book is almost as good as having a highly experienced mentor help you manage a project. The book provides very thorough coverage with sound, practical advice. There is a good list of reference material as well. I have been a software developer for more than 25 years and have managed several projects and still found I learned a lot from this book. I wish it had been available years ago. The book also provided confirmation for many of my beliefs about which I disagree with my current project manager. I hope to use this book to help convince him to change. I will be managing my own project again soon and plan to use use this book to help me succeed. Every software developer should read this book even if they are not a project manager. My only very slight criticism is that the book is most helpful to software product projects, but I think even internal development projects should be run as this book explains.
Great book.......2007-05-09
This is a great book.
Filled with real-world wisdom, it prepares you for what to expect in the world of project management as a career option.
Especially usefull for people from software development background.
Best book I've found on Project Management.......2007-03-14
This is an O'Reilly publication, although it lacks their characteristic animal on the cover. It is a fabulous book. While most Project Management books focus on helping you pass the PMI test, this book is focused on real life and has extensive chapters on dealing with difficult situations and so-called "difficult people".

an introductory text.......2007-07-29
This book and the workbook were required for a machine shop class I took. The Amazon description is pretty accurate. It is written for someone in a vocational training program who will be working in the industry rather than a home workshop. The book covers a lot of material, but doesn't go into depth on any of it. Its a pretty good introductory book, but its kind of expensive. I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't required for the class. If you are just interested in learning to operate a certain machine, like a mill or lathe, or if you are interested in machining as a hobby I think there are probably better books. I am giving it 3 stars because of the high price, and many of the photos are not high enough quality, especially considering the price.
well organised and illustrated.Lacking in metric info........1998-06-21
I find this book clear and easy to read on machining topics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners to intermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. I would also like to see a change to more up to date toolposts and tool holders for the lathes.
Book Description
This leading-edge book by
Esther and
Jerry Hicks, who present the teachings of the nonphysical entity
Abraham, is about having a deliberate intent for whatever you want in life, while at the same time balancing your energy along the way. But it’s important to note that the awareness of the need to balance your energy is much more significant than goal-setting or focusing on ultimate desires. And it is from this very important distinction that this work has come forth.
As you come to understand and effectively practice the processes offered here, you will not only achieve your goals and desired outcomes more rapidly, but you’ll enjoy every single step along the path even before their manifestation. As such, you’ll find that the living of your life is an ongoing journey of joy, rather than a series of long dry spells between occasional moments of temporary satisfaction.

Delving deeper and deliberately.......2007-10-01
It took a closer reading of this book to fully appreciate it, having read 'Ask And It Is Given' and 'The Law of Attraction.' If you are new to these teachings, I recommend, you read one of those first in order to fully appreciate what is presented here. This book focuses on the NOW, in making sure you stay aligned with your higher non-physical self(and thus source energy/God/universe), moment by moment. Exercises and examples are offered to help you get back on track towards alignment no matter what your emotional state. Yes, there is some repetition from other books, but that is what it takes to "get it". And while I was initially disappointed that some of the same processes discussed in 'Ask..' were repeated here, I realized that these were specifically chosen given the theme of this book, and the fresh examples offered, provided another incentive to use them! For those who have understood the basics, and then get stuck occasionally, or want to ratchet up their alignment with source, this book is a must. For me, it reinforced some fundamental points:
i) that more important than want you desire, is how you FEEL about that desire, and the vibration you offer.
ii) feeling good about something or a situation is more important than being right or justified in your negative emotion/judgment of it.
iii) nothing is more important than feeling good.
(For those who are critical of 'feeling good' or see it as selfish while African children are starving, recognize that unless we feel good, we are unable to be of benefit to others or focus beyond our immediate needs, let alone anyone else's. Also, as we move up the emotional scale toward peace/love/joy, our perceptions of 'self' is also more likely to change to embrace all beings as part of the interconnectedness that is the Universe, and one with Source. This is more likely to result in creating more compassionate deliberate intentions and manifestations to benefit all beings!
Ultimately though, this book is about making the most of our time in this physical plane, using our consciousness and thoughts to keep us in alignment with source energy in order to experience joy and abundance.
Interesting, but..........2007-09-08
The channeled Abraham says nothing you couldn't actually have thought of yourself, and at times I get the distinct feeling that I have read this or that almost word for word elsewhere in much older books.
Now this may be 'coincidence' but we all know that pure coincidence does not exist. I doubt very much that all of its content was channeled, it just doesn't have the right feel and twist of phrasing about it.
Nevertheless, a nice book as an introduction for the novice to the magical approach of living life. To those new to the material this book can look like be and end all of learning, but it isn't, and there is much more interesting stuff out there. Once you have mastered the basics - feel free to progress and have an adventure in cosnciousness. Don't just consume, be.
I can also recommend The Wizards of Consciousness: Making the Imponderable Practical and any of the Bartholomew books like "I Come As a Brother": A Remembrance of Illusions. these too are easily accessible.
Abraham & Vibrational Energy Concepts .......2007-09-05
This is a very good book on CD, and is life-changing material, if you are willing to believe in something that may sound VERY different to you. Most people do not believe in this way. "The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent" is the entire CD. Part 1 is "Living the Art of Allowing" and is a collection of 4 CDs, narrated mainly by Jerry Hicks. Part 2 is "Living the Path to Joy Through Energy Balance" and is a second collection of 4 CDs. You really want to buy both packages to get the entire book.
Abraham is a collective consciousness who speaks to Esther. She then relays the material. The material speaks primarily of metaphysical energy and its relationship to all that there is. It goes in-depth into manifestation by aligning your personal vibrational energies to match what you really want. Again, I know that's a hard concept to swallow, but that is the Law of Attraction. You really DO get what you think about. I have been studying metaphysical energy for about the last 7 or 8 years and I have seen the evidence soooo many times. Unfortunately, because of fear and control and many other negative personal vibrations, people usually think about what they DON'T want and that is what they manifest. Put simply, instead of seeing their car running smoothly on a log trip, they worry "What if it breaks down?". Instead of thinking about money in a positive way, they usually think of a LACK of money, and generally worry about it. So, they usually get what they do NOT want.
Anyway, this set of CDs not only explains the concept very well, but gives real-life examples and examples of the proper (aligned) thinking versus the non-aligned (improper) thinking, so you can begin to change your vibration to attract what you DO want. Like I said though, you need both CDs and an open mind, a VERY open mind. You also need to really work at this vibrational change to achieve successes with it. Even when you do achieve successes, it's hard to believe because we were just not conditioned to believe this way.
All that said, it's a great product and these are not the only authors talking about vibrational energy matching to manifest. What they say is right on target.
CD1, this set is slightly less than 2 and a half hours. CD set 2 is slightly more than 2 and a half hours. Both sets together total over 5 hours of audio book material which you can easily listen to in the car on your way to work. These 8 CDs have the potential to change your life.
Excelent service........2007-08-30
This audio book is wonderful. I can listen while doing other things and the information is invaluable.
Great Stuff, it works!.......2007-08-24
This is great; it has been a life changing experience for me. I recommend it highly.
Book Description
Completely Updated and Revised
This revised edition of Peter Senge’s bestselling classic, The Fifth Discipline, is based on fifteen years of experience in putting the book’s ideas into practice. As Senge makes clear, in the long run the only sustainable competitive advantage is your organization’s ability to learn faster than the competition. The leadership stories in the book demonstrate the many ways that the core ideas in The Fifth Discipline, many of which seemed radical when first published in 1990, have become deeply integrated into people’s ways of seeing the world and their managerial practices.
In The Fifth Discipline, Senge describes how companies can rid themselves of the learning “disabilities” that threaten their productivity and success by adopting the strategies of learning organizations—ones in which new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective aspiration is set free, and people are continually learning how to create results they truly desire.
The updated and revised Currency edition of this business classic contains over one hundred pages of new material based on interviews with dozens of practitioners at companies like BP, Unilever, Intel, Ford, HP, Saudi Aramco, and organizations like Roca, Oxfam, and The World Bank. It features a new Foreword about the success Peter Senge has achieved with learning organizations since the book’s inception, as well as new chapters on Impetus (getting started), Strategies, Leaders’ New Work, Systems Citizens, and Frontiers for the Future.
Mastering the disciplines Senge outlines in the book will:
• Reignite the spark of genuine learning driven by people focused on what truly matters to them
• Bridge teamwork into macro-creativity
• Free you of confining assumptions and mindsets
• Teach you to see the forest and the trees
• End the struggle between work and personal time

Fifth discipline.......2007-09-29
I have not read the book yet, but it came to me very fast. I was pleased with the service and I enjoy using Amazon.
Katrius
Must read.......2007-09-17
Any manager who wishes to develop the organization he works for must read this book. It is an excellent introduction to systems thinking within any type of organization.
The World is Knowledge Intensive.......2007-09-06
In addition to being a fan of Peter Senge, I'm also a great fan of the ultimate management guru, Peter Drucker, who got me thinking about "the learning organization" in his book, The Age of Discontinuity, when he said: "The world is becoming not labor intensive, not material intensive, not energy intensive, but knowledge intensive." I believe it, and thus, I was very receptive to Senge's thoughts in this book.
The central premise of my latest book, The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit & Growth The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit and Growth is this: the only sustainable advantage any firm can achieve in the future is the quality of the human talent it is able to recruit and retain. The knowledge they bring with them, and continue to acquire, is the key to their company's future growth and success.
Senge put it this way: "The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable competitive advantage."
Bottom line: I believe that managing knowledge in the contemporary business world is just as important as managing money. Successful companies of the future will clearly be seen as learning organizations, which Senge aptly defined as "a group of people who are continually enhancing their capability to create their own future."
Thought Leadership, and Breakthrough ideas.......2007-08-27
I found this book highly simulating but required heavy study to transfer the ideas into the working environment. I found the framework was incomplete especially around the issues of creating a learning environment. Senges' framework for Systems is best described in terms of 'systems dynamics' which leads onto a more developed theory by others on system complexity and emergence.
He describes what might be an end state without detailing how to get there, the later follow up field book on tools and methods now fills this gap neatly. Both books together are perfect.
This book sets out theory very well, it also provides Thought Leadership, Breakthrough ideas and Inspiration. Its well written and enjoyable.
Highly Reccomended!.......2007-06-05
Peter Senge provides a well organized analysis and discussion of 5 techniques and "disciplines" necessary for a successful organization. This is a highly recommended read for managers and those wishing to advance and build their organization. Peter Senge helps the reader understand how to build a successful learning organization using clear and everyday examples that are easy to understand. He starts by explaining the four proposed disciplines necessary to grasping his final and most important discipline, "Systems Thinking." While reading the book, many ideas Senge puts forward seem like common sense. However, as the saying goes, "common sense isn't so common" rings true here. Peter Senge shows that most people are unaware of these seemingly obvious ideas and disciplines proved in his many years of research. Everyone could learn a thing or two from this book and should try and read it if at all possible!

Book Description
Since the first edition of MRI in Practice was published in 1993, the book has become the standard text for radiographers, technologists, radiology residents, radiologists and even sales representatives on the subject of magnetic resonance imaging. This text is essential reading on postgraduate courses. Furthermore, MRI in Practice has come to be known as the number one reference book and study guide in the areas of MR instrumentation, principles, pulse sequences, image acquisition, and imaging parameters for the advanced level examination for MRI offered by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the USA. The book explains in clear terms the theory that underpins magnetic resonance so that the capabilities and operation of MRI systems can be fully appreciated and maximized. This third edition captures recent advances, and coverage includes: parallel imaging techniques, functional imaging techniques and new sequences such as balanced gradient echo.Building on the success of the first two editions, the authors have now re-conceptualized the design of the book. The third edition contains a wealth of additional illustrations and chapter enhancements draw on the depth of the authors ' experience in delivering MRI education and training. To promote accessibility of difficult concepts, extended analogies have been developed to relate the complexities of MRI physics to everyday phenomena. Learning points are clearly articulated, and frequent summaries are included to assist the reader in digesting the information.

A Great Helper for Students and Professionals.......2007-01-09
I have been working in MRI for 8 years and I think this is the best book I've ever read. This edition is well made than last edition. The figures and images are very useful.
One of the best all-in-one MRI instruction textbooks........2007-01-04
Not overly technical, easy to read, and not boring. Each topic is discussed clearly. The illustrations are sharp and in color. The chapter on K-space makes it worth the price. If you are only purchasing one textbook for MRI this is a very good choice. Less technical than Lufkin, less entertaining than Bushong; this is overall a very good choice for the technologist, medical student, or physician looking for a good reference on the subject of magnetic resonanace imaging.

Old and busted.......2007-05-05
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.
Usefulness.......2006-07-16
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.
buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.
This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06
A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.
