5 out of 5 stars Children's Writer's Market.......2007-04-04

As a writer in the juvenile field, I recommend Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market to all who are beginning children's authors. Writer's Market covers all kinds of publishing from books and magazines to textbooks and contests, including children's books. Most of it is not of interest to someone focused only on juvenile writing.
Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market is invaluable because it not only lists the many worldwide markets for children's books, but it gives specific information on writing for children, lists the types of books each publisher puts out, and includes tips by publishers on what they require and expect at their publishing house.
This is a book every beginning children's writer would do well to study long before they have completed a manuscript. Check it out at the library to see how helpful it is. If the library has no copy, suggest that it would be a great service to the public to add one to the shelves.

5 out of 5 stars The best source for the would be writer or illustrator........2007-03-24

I've recommended this book countless times for patrons during my twenty year library career and now I am using it for myself. Not only are there helpful, instructive articles by professionals about the publishing industry but the 750 listings help to narrow down the search for a publisher, rep or agent. It may seem daunting at first but the editors do most of the work for you. Getting work published is a send and wait game so sending the work to a firm ready to look at your work makes the process easier. CWIM includes professional conference as well as agents, art reps and of course publishers and magazines.

Anyone who is a Writer will tell you the Writer's Market is the bible and if they haven't, I am telling you now. This is a Children's Writers & Illustrators bible. Everything you will ever need to get started is all in this book. I am currently writing a children's book and will be illustrating it myself. I must credit this book for giving me the necessary resources. They even include tips from published Writiers to motivate you on your path to getting that manuscript out. It is easy to read, easy to find exactly what I am looking for in a compact size I can take anywhere. I absolutely love it! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for freelance artists.......2007-09-24

This is a great book of sources for freelance projects. It has interesting articles and tons of people to contact. You do need to read through carefully to pick publishers who are more likely to need your services.

5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-08-14

essential to the start-up freelancer or the old pro who wants new contacts for work. I wish they had this when I was starting out...

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your money........2007-06-21

Don't waste your money. As an art-rep I think this book is depressing and does not give a complete view of the choices that artists have. I found many mistypes and I believe that their sources are not a good spread of the market. My advice is to get it from the library and explore your options on the web. Just like anything start at the bottom, be nice, willing to learn, and stick to it. It is possible to make it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ecoDesign: The SourcebookRevised Edition .......2007-01-10

This book is useful but does not contain much additional information from previous edition.

4 out of 5 stars a good starting point.......2005-09-17

This beautifully designed book is a great idea-generator if you're thinking about using sustainable products and materials in your home or office, or if you just like cool, european design that makes you ask, "so where can I get that?" or "who makes that utterly cool thing that I will probably never find in a shop and can't afford, anyway?"

It introduces you to good-looking examples of ecological design for everyday life -- flooring, furniture, transportation, miscellaneous -- and gives a breakdown of the kinds of materials available (biopolymers, textiles, etc.) and who makes them. For me, it would also be helpful to see price tags on some of these options, as well as more easily located--or at least up-to-date--URLs for the companies that produce them. Many examples had no web sites listed and some were defunct.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for designers.......2003-01-12

this book is cool - lots of pictures, the text is brief. there is a good mix of concepts and production products ( concepts are always more fun to look at and have more pure ideas. production parts show how it all works in the real world). in fact, the best part of the book is that it finds positive things about a lot of products. it isn't demanding that we stop using plastic or batteries - just finds the best examples of products that use them wisely.

One important section is buried in the back. pages 327 - 330 give eco-design strategies. the are brief desicriptions of how to design an "eco" product. for example, one says "self-assembly: designs that are assembled by the consumer, therefore saving valuable space in transport and storage". most writers would take several pages to say the same thing.

4 out of 5 stars great fun to browse.......2002-08-07

For those of us who appreciate both good design and environmental issues (recyclability, energy used in manufacture, durability, etc.), this book offers a wonderfully wide spectrum of products that will inspire and enlighten... and possibly make you reach for your credit cards, thanks to the lists of manufacturer contact info in the back. However, you should realize that a significant portion of the products shown are "one-offs" or case studies -- they are not available for purchase. I feel that the author's descriptions are inconsistent -- sometimes helpful or interesting, sometimes not. But the vast array of products presented are generally quite well chosen from what must have been a truly dizzying number of possible entries, and nicely organized. I appreciate the inclusion of vehicles, although I have been watching that particular area of product development (EV's, FCV's, etc.) closely enough to wish that the author had opted to include certain other models, and had more complete or current facts about some that were presented, such as the General Motors EV1, which was a brilliantly designed electric car with a massive waiting list, mysteriously pulled out of production by GM for extremely dubious reasons. In summary, Ecodesign is quite enjoyable, with a huge number of fantastic designs for a wide range of products.

"The first axiom for camp is... do not make yourself uncomfortable for want of things to which you are accustomed," advised The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook in 1890 to high-born Brits living in India, most of which England had by that point colonized through a succession of wars, or military "campaigns," throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. This impeccably curated, insightfully narrated, and richly illustrated volume proves that the homesick subjects of the Raj took such advice deeply to heart. It showcases nearly 200 years of furniture designed expressly to approximate all the refinement of a proper British household inside the canvas tents of ranking officers afar, but also to break down and fold up fast for easy, compact transport (hence campaign furniture's other appellation, "knock-down" furniture). Masterfully put together by independent curator Brawer, previously a researcher in the Indian and Southeast Asian departments of London's venerable Victoria and Albert Museum, this handsome volume succeeds on two levels: it amply highlights the stylistic elegance and technical ingenuity of this kind of furniture--a bureau that becomes a bed when its drawers are removed; a lady's bidet that folds into a leather case; or a dining table seating 20 that fits inside a 10-inch-deep box--while putting it (often quite wryly) in the historical context of an expatriate society that sought to re-create Britain wherever it went and had little or no interest in adapting to or learning about the customs or designs of the people it conquered (and essentially enslaved). Throughout, Brawer includes excerpts from a fascinating array of letters, journals, and other documents of the period, and an excellent pictorial directory of the furniture's craftsmen and manufacturers helps make this impressive tome invaluable for collectors, design historians, Anglophiles, and Merchant-Ivory set designers alike. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

For Great Britain's gentlemen soldiers stationed in India, Africa, the South Seas, and North America, campaign furniture brought the comfort and civility of home to “life under canvas.” Collapsible and compact, made to be carried on the march and assembled on site, these folding chairs, desks, and cots—used by armies since ancient times—reached an aesthetic apex in 18th- and 19th-century England. To convey their social status, gentleman soldiers stationed abroad ordered entire suites of the ingeniously designed, elaborately styled, fold-up furnishings, and manufacturers such as Chippendale, Sheraton, and Hepplewhite furiously competed for commissions. In the first-ever book on the subject, Nicholas A. Brawer meticulously details this fascinating merger of commerce and craftsmanship.

Featuring more than 250 photographs organized by furniture type, the images include “before and after”series depicting items in packed and assembled states. A comprehensive directory of makers will prove invaluable to collectors, dealers, and military buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Lavish Coffee Table Book on British Campaign Furniture.......2002-04-07

This book is a must have for anyone interested in English antiques, social, military, or naval history. I have never seen another book on this subject and it is filled with very interesting "before" and "after" photographs of dozens and dozens of pieces of campaign furniture "assembled" and "disassembled." I imagine this book has been a great hit in London.

5 out of 5 stars Oh that all books were as beautiful.................2002-02-20

This is an excellent review of British Campain Furniture.

Each piece is photographed in colour and/or Black & White, discussed and given brief measurements. The "disembled" photos are of great use to anyone who wishes to reconstruct any of the items from the book, as well as satisfying the just plain curious. Some of the gadgets are fantastic.

Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the author is limited by the pieces that he can access within a year or two. I know there were 'Campaign' folding rocking chairs, and I an certain that there are other examples of furniture, with other systems of assembly ( Louis Vouton made a folding-bed-in-a-trunk for the Brazza Expedition in Africa in the late 1800's which survives - there is a single picture in 'Treasure Chests').

I can only hope that the author will be encouraged to keep looking & photographing, and that we may see a second volume in years to come.

Sorry Amazon, you just don't have enough stars........

5 out of 5 stars Great picture book.......2001-09-24

I just had to have this book. The subject matter was unusual and touched on the social aspects of camp life in the British Army.
The pictures are fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Review from The Arizona Republic, June 27, 2001.......2001-09-06

"If you were a British officer during the 18th or 19th century, your home had the look of a proper English residence, with desks, chairs, sofas, chests and fancy bedroom suites--even if you lived in a tent.

'The only real difference between fine household furniture and its campaign counterpart was that the latter could be quickly folded up, packed away in boxes, transported, and--without the use of nails, tacks or tools--reassembled...,' Nicholas A. Brawer writes in British Campaign Furniture.

How the furniture can be taken apart and stored is fascinating. One dining table and set of four padded chairs and a chaise lounge can be broken down into pieces that fit into two small crates.

There are pictures of the furnishings set up and stored. Often officers lived better overseas than at home. One cartoon depicts a British officer and his wife dining in their home overseas, with a half-dozen servants waiting on them, and then dining at home after retirement, with only one housekeeper.

Nearly half the book is a portfolio of the furnishings and detailed descriptions of manufacturers and furniture makers."

5 out of 5 stars Review from Quest Magazine, April 2001.......2001-08-31

"There was a time when the sun never set on the British Empire. From Ceylon to the Americas, England ruled, bringing her lifestyle to Crown colonies around the globe.

Being stationed in India or Egypt, however, was no excuse to relax the standards of living to which British Army officers were accustomed. Living 'under canvas' did not mean roughing it. Instead, they brought their homes with them, packing cunningly constructed, portable furniture suitable for any elegant tented dinner.

Today, campaign furniture's elegance and simplicity have made it a must-have item for decorators and antique lovers. Nicholas Brawer's new book British Campaign Furniture: Elegance Under Canvas (Abrams) provides a fascinating history and a guide to collapsible decor."

Book Description

A searchable database of 9,000 logos by keyword is available by subscription on the popular website, logolounge.com, launched in 2002 by author Bill Gardner. If you don't have a subscription but would still like to see the best logos on the site created by top designers who often maintain low profiles, then LogoLounge 2 is for you.

Recent noteworthy projects that are claiming the public spotlight are profiled in this book, which covers identities created for various industries such as airlines, networks, dot-coms, banks, and fashion, as well as lesser-known boutique projects in which the designer's name is larger than the client's.

The first portion of the book profiles 10 top designers and spotlights their biggest, newest campaigns. A handful of their smaller projects are also featured, including some that have never before been seen. The second half of the book contains almost 2,000 logos organized by client type.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great series of books!.......2007-02-26

I'm very impressed with the wide array and organization of this book (and the others in the series). Such great colors, and layout... everything just makes me want to study every last detail on every last page. I've bought the first two... and have added the third one to my wish list. If you want to be a good logo designer but experience "designer's block," this should get you over that hump. Thanks, Bill Gardner, and all the fabulous designers who were featured in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Well edited.......2007-01-10

Well printed, well edited and an excellent resource for designers and creative individuals.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-11-10

Great for idea gathering and inspiration. It keeps you up to date with the newest logo designs.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel.......2005-10-22

Logo Lounge 1 is a must-have in my design library - I refer to it often. Unfortunately Logo Lounge 2 seems lackluster, uninspired, and disappointing. While it contains the same quantity of logos as the first book, the solutions are much less imaginative and the profile section at the beginning is too long and the designers profiled, and their work, are difficult to relate to.

5 out of 5 stars The Culture A.D. review.......2005-10-07

The straight to the point advertising and design agency review. For our agency Logo Lounge 2 is a excellent visual reference. It allows us to quickly "thin slice" the visual trends as well as give us in depth case studies. It's a hot source for inspiration that puts your head in the right space for designing logos that speak intelligently and conceptually to help with branding opportunities for clients and their consumers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Designing Better Maps.......2007-08-09

An excellent book, but a bit tedious. Gives the GIS user an excellent review of what makes a map visually useful. GIS users aren't necessarily the best cartographers and this can help them along

2 out of 5 stars Descent for beginners.......2007-05-11

This book reviews the very basics of map design and hardly touches on cartographic representations. It is probably a good starting point for first timers to GIS and mapping, but for the average map maker/cartographer it is too rudimentary.

5 out of 5 stars Designing Better Maps.......2006-11-05

Since I am relatively new to the world of GIS Mapping, this book was an invaluable aid to designing more attractive maps. It's a beautifully laid-out book with lots of common-sense tips in it. Well worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars Call it training.......2006-03-15

If you analyze data and make maps, this is well worth the money.
It helps if you use ArcGIS too....

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of map design using ArcMap.......2005-12-06

This book is the first one I would recommend to the typical GIS user wanting to make better maps. Some other reviewers have commented that many of the suggestions are basic; however, I have seen countless maps that could benefit from the design suggestions presented here.
