Customer Reviews:
Easy to Understand.......2006-03-16
This is a great entry-level book. It's well-written with easy-to-understand case studies and pertinent examples.
Complete and Very Well Explained.......2004-09-18
Copyrights used to be so simple. The U.S. Constitution says: to promote the progrss of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors exclusive right to their respective writing and discoveries. From there it gets a lot messier. For instance a book copyrighted and published in 1930 was under copyright for 28 years. If the copyright was not renewed it expired in 1958. But if in 1958 the copyright was renewed for an additional 28 years, or 1986. But the law was changed so that if the copyright was not renewed the book is in the public domain. But if it was renewed the copyright now goes until 70 years after the death of the author, or maybe 95 years after it was first published, or possibly 120 years after it was created.
And if you think that is a mess, wait until you get into digital, like the web. If a book is still in copyright in the US, but available on an Australian web site, can you download it, can you print a copy, can you sell it?
This book clearly, and using an interesting format explains these and lots more points.

Book Description
The primary focus of this text is to provide a bridge for students between the academic world and the real world. This bridge is built through an understanding of what is law, how law is created, how law affects almost every activity of human conduct, and how legal institutions operate. Intended mainly for architectural and engineering students, but increasingly for those in business schools and law schools, this text features a clear, concise, and jargon-free presentation. It probes beneath the surface of legal rules and uncovers why these rules developed as they did, outlines arguments for and against these rules, and examines how they work in practice. Updated with the most recent developments in the legal aspects of architectural, engineering, and the construction processes, this text is also a valuable reference for practitioners that has been cited in over twenty-five court decisions.

Legal Aspect of Architecture, ENgineering and Construction Process.......2007-04-02
Excellent Book, It a wealth of Materials and mandatory reading for Construction Management program at the University Of Washington Master Program in Civil and Construction.. The material is spot on for Construction management
The best.......2006-02-21
First, I am not a lawyer, but a praticing design/ contruction professional. I have used this book for years. I find it very well written and easy to use. I have loaned it to so many lawyers when thing get tight that I don't remember all of them. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has to deal with contracts and construction. When things start to go sour, its a great resource for all parties involved.
Great for a Law Student.......2004-01-27
This is probably the most comprehensive construction law book I have ever read. It is an absolute must for a law student taking construction law.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too complicated.......2003-05-14
If you happen to be studying construction law IN LAW SCHOOL, then this is your book.
If, on the other hand, you are in the construction business and are looking for a practical book on construction law, keep looking. This is not your book. It is extremely difficult to read and Sweet writes in such a sophisticated manner that it borders on arrogance. It's not uncommon to find entire paragraphs that consist of one sentence. I found myself scratching my head and asking, "what in the hell did he just say?" Re-reading convoluted law text is not fun.
Book Description
This highly acclaimed reference book presents a comprehensive overview of the legal issues faced by anyone working in the visual arts. The narrative text is arranged into twenty-four chapters covering: copyright, contracts, censorship, moral rights, sales (by artist, gallery, or agent), taxation, estate planning, museums, collecting, and grants.
The book suggests basic strategies, gives information to help with further action, and contains many sample legal forms and contracts. This edition is a complete revision, providing not only updated legal information, but also covering the ever-increasing importance of new media and electronic rights.
Customer Reviews:
Must have for artists!.......2007-06-29
It's not always the most entertaining book to read (who enjoys reading about taxes?), but read through it once. Stick it on your shelf. And then whenever you need it, the book can reference you to certain government documents such as release forms, copyright forms, tax forms, consignment forms, authenticity forms, etc. There's tons of forms in the book for you to work off of when you are writing up your own agreements. Also current on laws for artists. Always keep a current edition of this book handy.
Tad Crawford Does It Again.......2006-10-23
Tad Crawford does his as-usual excellent job clarifying a complex area for the working visual artist. Readers will admire his straightforward writing style and many, many practical examples.
A word of warning, though: as Tad himself says, he is not providing legal advice and, while the artist will thank Tad if he or she follows Tad's advice, it does not substitute for appropriate legal consults as needed.
Excellent resource for artists.......2006-07-07
This is an excellent resource to define and explain legal issues in the arts. It is a little dry in some parts but far easier to read than books written for the legal profession. I have been using this book as a textbook for a college class at an art school for graphic design students for several years.
The book covers copyright law and touches on legal business issues that pertain to all visual artists. The focus of the book is on fine artists but it is the best resource I have found for graphic designers.
Great Reference Guide.......2004-11-22
Even if you have the luxury of an attorney that speicalizes in art contracts, as I do, this is a great book of forms to keep handy for quick reference. My advice is to get it with his other book: Business & Legal Forms for Fine Artists also by Tad Crawford
If not this book, what else?.......2002-01-24
As the title of the book stated, "Legal guide for the VISUAL ARTIST", the book covers information that is aimed at VISUAL artists, including photographers, painters, printmakers, designers, sculptors, illustrators, textile designers, cartoonists, and craftspeople. Wow!
Wow, all right. That may be the reason some artists may have found the book full of legalese. In my humble opinion, this is a must-have for anyone that claims oneself to be one of the ones listed above. If not this book, what else?
Starting from the minute one decides to have some "interaction" with other human beings regarding the making (or selling) of one's art, this book is of big help. For instance, an artist may decide to hire a model to paint a picture, this book will guide him/her how to prepare a model release form in order to guarantee the artist benefits of the painting created, without problems such as violation of privacy in the long run. This book is also a critical line of defense for the artists in dealing with copyrights, ownership, insurance, and tax income, etc.
My guess is that if one is simply an artist, one would read through the book (or at least sections of immediate concern, for instance, a painter would not have to worry too much about sections for photographers) and scan through the whole book for information. As far as using the book on a regular basis, I believe by frequently reviewing relevant sections, as well as making use of sample forms provided in the book, any visual artist will find this book an indispensable tool for his/her art making/selling process.
Strongly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
IT TAKES YOU STRAIGHT TO SCHOOL (wink).......2007-09-19
The book gave me moe information than needed. It talks about the complications in distrubution deals, the unions, music, digaital cameras, and a few other things upcoming producers need to know about the industry before signing into or onto something. I highly recommend it to producers, writers, and directiors. It remind us that the film world is like a whole other business on another planet.
MUST Have.......2007-05-12
If you wanna get into any sort of video field, or wanna know how the industry functions, and what are the legal and business issues you have to deal with...
...this book is a MUST Have.
Good book for everyone that wants to know the business.......2007-01-19
not only did I get this for myself but I got two other friends their own personal copies (got tired of them borrowing mine). It will keep you out of legal trouble in the film industry and give you insight as to how things are structured.
More Than a Great Book--It's a Public Service.......2004-06-16
This is more than a great book--it's a public service. The
authors share insights from their decades of legal and
entertainment production experience, in essence offering
thousands of dollars of free legal advice to aspiring
independent producers. Beyond offering a roadmap of business-
planning steps, the book includes templates of numerous legal
forms that an independent producer might need. Meanwhile, in
clear and artful prose, they alternate between You're-Not-God
straight talk and You-Can-Do-It encouragement. Between the
lines, there seems to be a genuine interest in helping
important stories and quality independent work to see the
light of day. I've read other books on the business side of
entertainment that were helpful, but this stands out as the
best of the lot.
The bible of independent film producer.......2003-08-27
If you are or want to become an independent film producer, this book will give you all of the business/legal knowledge of filmmaking you need. Even though I have not finished the book yet, I've already found this book to be extremely valuable. Because I am planning to produce a new film next year, I even called up Mr. Tulchin directly for legal advice. He was very friendly and took the time to give me great advices and was very knowledgeable in not just U.S. based entertainment law but also international entertainment law as well. Read this book and you will find it worth more than what you paid for!!!
Book Description
In response to the increasing convergence of technologies in the entertainment industries, this thoroughly updated and revised fifth edition makes the casebook more timeless. Providing contract templates covering book publishing, recording contracts, actor agreements, video game agreements, and internet agreements, among others, this new edition is more useful and illustrative of the business of entertainment for lawyers, students, and industry professionals than its competition. Introductions, notes, and cases are fully updated to take into account recent changes in the industry. This classic casebook is essential to students at law schools throughout the country and to industry professionals trying to keep up with this ever-changing field of law.

A helpful examination of the entertainment business.......1999-05-05
As an attorney teaching an entertainment law course to undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame, I've found this text book to be very useful. Not only does it address and examine legal issues that face entertainment industry persons, it examines *how* the entertainment industries actually work. The vast majority of my students have found this book to be useful and worthwhile.

Cogent, Compelling, and even . . . Conservative?.......2007-02-11
Michael Tigar wrote this book as a companion to his first major trial advocacy book, Examining Witnesses. As with Examining Witnesses, Tigar includes large portions of transcripts of his own trials and those of his mentor, Edward Bennett Williams.
In fact, Tigar appears to have written Persuasion at least in part to restore Williams's reputation, which Tigar believes suffered as a result of Evan Thomas's biography, The Man to See. (In Fighting Injustice, Tigar's memoirs, he describes Thomas's book as a biography "from the waist down.") For those of us who didn't know Williams, Thomas's book doesn't seem that bad. But it's true that Thomas fails to capture the power of Williams as an advocate. Tigar fills that gap.
Unlike many other books on trial advocacy (e.g., Francis Wellman's Art of Cross-Examination), Tigar adds social and historical context to these transcripts through the use of readable introductions and intermittent commentaries. Tigar's "deconstruction" (a Tigar term) makes his books far superior to the typical trial advocacy book.
Tigar has a brilliant legal mind but writes with an informal and disarming style. Further, even though Tigar comes from a left-wing political perspective, he rejects the moral relativism that many on the left espouse. In fact, Tigar's belief in a definable notion of right and wrong and his love of writers like Aristotle, Cicero, and C.S. Lewis speak to at least some aspects of the conservative intellectual movement. (Examples include Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind and even Robert Bork's Slouching Toward Gomorrah, which cites C.S. Lewis's position against relativism. Lewis's arguments also appear in The Conservative Reader, edited by Russell Kirk.)
In any event, Tigar is likeable and admirable even if you disagree with his politics. Persuasion shows that no matter what side you're on, there are widely applicable principles, many passed down from ancient times, that will help you try a better case.

Simple and Direct Help.......2006-09-14
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
"Business and Legal Forms" has the documents you'll need, such as copyright transer forms, publishing contracts and stock listing forms for your creative work. His descriptions are very helpful. Of greatest practical use, though, is the included DVD containing MS Word documents of all of the forms.
If you're just getting started in fine arts, or even if you have been working a while, you need this book!
Business and Legal Forms for Fine Artists.......2006-03-24

Book Description
With expanded coverage in this new edition, The Elements of Legal Style features additional sections, many more examples, and a thoroughly researched appendix that contains 80 major statements on prose style--what it is and how to attain it. Inspired by Strunk and White's The Elements of Style, this book clearly (often wittily) explains the full range of what legal writers need to know: mechanics, word choice, structure, and rhetoric, as well as all the special conventions that legal writers should follow in using headings, defined terms, quotations, and many other devices. Garner also provides abundant examples from the best legal writers of yesterday and today, including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Clarence Darrow, Frank Easterbrook, and Antonin Scalia. If you want to make your writing clearer, more precise, more persuasive, and above all more stylish, The Elements of Legal Style offers the surest--and the most enjoyable--means to that end.
Customer Reviews:
Not just for lawyers.......2006-08-10
I am a physician who tested out of all college English to focus on science. Writing chart notes, scientific articles, or even parts of textbooks does not prepare one for the type of writing one must do when performing legal work.
Scientific-technical writing, legal writing, or the best-selling novel all require different writing styles. Mr. Garner's book must be a help to law students based on other reviews but importantly to me; it is very accessable to those who have never attended law school.
Legal style is a "style" that is important in the profession of law. If you do any work in this area at all, whether it is on the stand or writing essays, it behooves the non-lawyer to read this book. So, even though I agree with the glowing reviews from lawyers, this book may be even more important to those of us who must do legal work but have never been to law school.
Shockingly good.......2006-03-09
In short, this is the first and only style guide that I have ever been excited to continue reading and share with others. It has really improved my writing.
For those who wish to reach beyond the stars........2005-10-22
First introduced to Bryan A. Garner at one of his brief writing seminar, several years ago, I have since been a loyal reader of his works.
This book is (1) a reference book, (2) an invaluable resource, (3) more than just a grammar or style book ever thought of being, (4) chocked full of historical information and legal literary quotes, (5) presented in a humorous and accessible manner, and (6) the standard to which all legal writers should aspire.
Poor writing and the use of legalese have always been bug-a-boos of mine. And, over the lifetime of my legal practice, having to slave over thousands of statutes, briefs, decisions, motions, etc., has only intensified my belief that too few lawyers know how to write well, and that the legal profession should abolish the use of legalese from the practice of law.
In Mr. Garner, I have found a champion. In "The Elements of Legal Style", writers wishing to take their craft beyond the stars will find a valuable cache of information that will lay the foundations to improve their writing and persuading skills. He shows you how to remove the legalese from your writing, how to make your writing dynamic and exciting, and how to use your writing to better persuade. This book, along with "The Winning Brief", should be the foundation of your arsenal of writing tools.
Helped me get on the Law Review.......2005-07-12
I read a review where someone said they read this and it got them on the law review. That was what I was looking for, so I bought it and the same thing happened to me (which is incredible considering my grades). This book gave me the tools to express what I want to say without trying to cram everything into one sentence. Somehow, after reading this book, I felt much less inhibited about my writing and more confident that I was using correct grammar, sentence structure, etc. Now that I think about it I'd like to read it again. I'd highly reccomend this to someone who wants to write legal papers that are actually readable and have some style.
A Masterpiece.......2005-03-17
The principles inside of this book are priceless. Utilizing them will drastically improve your legal writing skills, which will ultimately foster success in your legal career/education.
