A must for anyone who deals with difficult people.......2007-08-15
I am an acoustical and systems design consultant, and prior to that have held jobs in sound contracting and public assembly facility technical operations for a total of approximately 25 years. As anybody who has worked in the entertainment, performing arts, hospitality, or religious world can attest, I come into contact with more than my fair share of difficult people and tense situations.
This book and the courses authorized or taught by its author were highly recommended to me approximately 15 years ago by a police lieutenant who gave a guest lecture in a criminology class I was taking in college. This same officer also mentioned the book at an in-house training event at the university sports/concert arena where I worked at the time. It is with no small amount of embarrassment that I must report that it took me until last year to "get around to" buying and reading this book. I certainly could have used its advice, even years before it was written!
Suffice it to say that Verbal Judo is the type of book that is enlightening upon the initial read-through, but whose true value only comes from steady effort to change one's behaviors from long-held bad habits. I believe learning would be far more effective with ongoing practice and coaching, just as with a physical martial art. However, until such a dojo opens its doors in my fair city, I shall have to make do with re-reading the book and discussing its application with others who have been similarly blessed by its wisdom.
Outstanding book and program.......2007-07-16
We are taught Verbal Judo in my line of work. It's an outstanding program. The book goes into how the program originated and explains it in detail. If you're into law enforcement, security or EMS this book should be mandatory reading.
A must read for all Law Enforcement........2007-06-19
I have heard the term "verbal judo" tossed around at work since first becoming a Deputy Sheriff with a metro Atlanta Sheriff's Office almost a year ago. For a few years verbal judo was taught to all new deputies but apparently our department let our certification lapse and as such when I joined it had ceased to be taught.
Well I want to be the best deputy that I can be and thus I went and ordered this book. I couldn't put it down! I carried it with me while I worked at the jail and read it in my office on my down time. In two days I finished the book and felt like I had a new weapon to add to my arsenal when dealing with people.
I liked the book so much, I actually loaned it to another deputy on my shift and like wise he couldn't put it down. Another deputy saw him reading the book, asked him where he got and she then proceed to track me down and ask if she could borrow the book next.
The books made me rethink all the altercations I have had at the jail and even in life. How I could have handle things better. As I prepare to go to academy in September and then shortly afterwards, the road, I feel that by taking the time to educate myself on this vital concept, I have greatly helped prepare myself for not only the road but for life itself.
THIS BOOK REALLY,REALLY, SUCKS!!!.......2007-06-06
THIS BOOK TITLE IS VERY MISLEADING..IT DOESN'T GIVE THE TYPE OF KNOWLEDGE IT IMPLIES..IF YOU WANT ANY TYPE OF SKILL, IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION OR OTHERWISE, THE 48 LAWS OF POWER HAS IT! AS DOES ALL OF ROBERT GREENES OTHER BOOKS..THAT IS AN AUTHOR THAT DOESN'T FALSE ADVERTISE! HE TEACHES EXACTLY WHAT HE CLAIMS AND MUCH MORE!CHECK HIM OUT.THE ART OF SEDUCTION BY GREENE IS ALSO MUCH MORE HELPFUL IN VERBAL SITUATIONS, THOUGH NOT AS MUCH AS HIS OTHER TWO BOOKS.BUYING HIS THREE DEFINITELY WON'T DISAPPOINT
The 48 Laws of Power
Very good book.......2007-05-24
I found this book very interesting and useful.
I wish only not to forget to refresh verbal judo guidelines - I tend
to return to my old , not sophisticated ways of dealing with difficult people..
The idea of "Verbal Judo" makes all the ideas in this book memorable
and significant . Good attitude and wise form of presentation.
I really thank the author for this remarkable book

No Fear Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet.......2007-03-09
I purchased this book for my freshman daughter, who is in Pre-AP English class. She says it has made reading and understanding Romeo and Juliet easy.
NOW I get it!.......2005-12-24
Echoing the review below...this helped me understand many things I was missing - even in other "helper" versions. After a few run-throughs of the "No Fear" side, you're ready for the "Real Shakespeare" side. Fabulous for students...of any age!
No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever.......2004-06-30
This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).
Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.
There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.
Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.
I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.
Book Description
The enormous changes in the 1990s throughout the Middle East have necessitated this thoroughly revised edition of the standard introduction to the subject. Offering a balanced history of both Israeli and Arab goals, Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict covers the history of Palestine before Israeli independence in 1948 and brings the story forward to the breakthrough Arab-Israeli Accord of 1993 and its troubled aftermath.
Customer Reviews:
Good with excellent primary sources.......2006-02-10
The Arab-Israeli conflict is one that touches on so many painful emotions and biases that no book will be deemed fair or unbiased by all concerned. However, Smith's book does a very good job of attempting to be as close to unbiased as possible. It is often used as a textbook in upper-level modern Middle East history courses for just that reason. It is good choice for someone who is new to the subject (other than the inescapable news coverage) and really wants to understand some of the issues invovled throughout the history of the conflict.
One of the strongest things about Smith's book is the inclusion of a number of primary sources. Other than disputing the translations, no one can deny that primary sources are as close to an honest look at history as we can get. Documents are included from many sides of the issues involved and no side comes out either squeekly clean nor as pure evil.
Another strength I found, to differ with another reviewers opinion, is that the book starts quite far back in the history of the conflict. As the mythologizing of the roots of Israel as a nation has been worked into the official stance of all sides, each for their own purposes, understanding what happened at the beginning is of utmost importance if you really want to grasp the subject. This is a good book that does it's best with a difficult subject and goes into some depth in addition to excellent primary source material.
Read with care and caution.......2005-06-04
Like some other reviewers, I too bought this book for a college course and I too find it overly biased toward the Arab point of view. The author has the right to draw his own conclusions, but like any non-fiction book, readers must use their own judgement to evaluate those conclusions carefully. I don't know if there is an author without bias on this topic due to its sensitivity.
It is also horribly dry in my opinion. I know it's supposed to be, but certain sections just drag on and on, it seems, uneccessarily.
Read critically, not literally. If you have a choice (i.e. don't have to buy this particular book for a course or something) choose a more balanced author, if you can find one.
A Good Historical Overview But More Recent Events are Biased.......2005-04-25
The book is a fairly concise and accurate overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It covers ancient Jewish history, the beginnings of Zionism, the emergence of Israel, the Arab Wars and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Most of the coverage is well researched and documented.
The closing chapters of the book are undoubtedly biased towards the Palestinian account. One example is the coverage of the Barak-Arafat-Clinton negotiations in 2000. Smith portrays Barak as a man whose intentions were not to conduct honest negotiations but rather "carefully calculated, intended to appear more amenable to the United States." Smith writes that "there was never an Israeli offer." Further, Smith asserts that Barak was manipulating the media in order to force them to present a positive account of Israeli negotiations. Arafat's refusal to make any counter offer, or contribute to the negotiations -- as asserted by President Clinton and the U.S. chief negotiater -- are not mentioned. Smith also does not fault Palestinian terrorism -- the systematic, often daily suicide bombings experienced by Israel -- for turning Israeli public opinion against further peace talks. According to Smith, the blame lies solely on Sharon and his visit to the Temple Mount and Palestinian frustration.
Smith's discussion of the Intifada speaks in terms of Israeli attacks and Palestinian "armed response." In fact, Israel had been initially very reserved in its replies to suicide bombings. Israeli interests do not lie in a military occupation of the Palestinian territories, unless necessary to alleviate security risk.
Admittedly, I have an opinion about whose fault the failure of the Camp David II was. It is acceptable for the author to take an opposite view. However, in a book that claims to be a non-biased textbook for college use, the topic should be presented with acknowledgement of differing opinions. Especially, when the book presents an account that is largely a contrast to the established narrative (a narrative that there is no reason to believe is inaccurate).
My rating is still positive because the book is a valuable resource in its coverage of earlier time periods. However, this book should be used with other materials for balance.
Read this book.......2005-04-15
A perfectly balanced, non-biased, facts only, well documented, concise and detailed account. An excellent book to be read by all who wish to have an in-depth knowledge of what went and goes on in that part of the world.
A great survey of the everlasting conflict.......2005-02-23
Great book...easy to read for a history text. Read it over a weekend and actually stayed awake. Up to date discussion and documents add value to the study of the topic.
Highly recommend.

I Agree---This Is An Amazing Book.......2007-02-09
I read all the reviews by other readers of this book and was surprised that everyone gave it 5 stars. After reading it, I have to agree with them. The things Sharon Ellison is teaching in this book are amazing. I wish I would have known about them sooner or that it was a part of my early education.
In any case, I want to spread the word about how to communicate in a non-defensive way. I am lending my copy of the book to everyone I know. It is more empowering than using defensive communication. And I really feel like it is necessary for the next step in our human evolution in order for our humanity to catch up with our technology (something Sharon Ellison writes about in the last chapters of the book).
I have no reservation in recommending this book.
One of the most practical books on communication and conflict resolution.......2006-03-28
I own a lot of books on listening, communication and conflict resolution. This book is one of the better ones because it presents a lot of useful concepts in an easy to apply manner.
The book begins by covering different communication styles and the thinking that underlies each style. It then goes on to present a non-defensive model and shows how it works, why it makes sense and how to put it into practice.
This book also talks about developing specific attitudes toward honesty and compassion. In other words, it is more than a text of communication techniques.
If you have read a lot in this area or a little, you will find this to be a very useful book. I also recommend "Crucial Conversations."
Awesome book!.......2003-07-31
I love this book and would wholeheartedly recommend it for every househould. Families and coworkers can have the best intentions, but if the language we use is what we all grew up with - a war-like model - then it can be confusing and frustrating when our interactions with people make us feel worse than before. I like how this book dissects the language we typically use (most of it rang all too familiar!), then offers new ways of communicating the same thing with language that helps the other person feel more receptive.
I've started using these techniques at home and at work, and I can't speak highly enough about it. I really learned a lot, and I feel more empowered in my communication skills, even in difficult of situations - not that I don't fall back into old ways. But when I do, it's a reminder of how different the results are when you use language consciously or unconsciously.
The concept of using language creatively to generate harmony is such an obvious but brilliant observation. The way the author breaks everything down into examples makes it seem really possible for anyone to transform and improve how they interact with the world. (The index of examples is really helpful!)
Helped me with defensive teen.......2002-05-12
I had bought this book, thinking it would teach my teen how to be less defensive. What it did was teach me how to deal with her defensiveness. I found that, by using the book's techniques, I was able to defuse potential battles and our house is much, much calmer as I can now defuse the power struggles she initiates. I also found that I have used the techniques many times with others in the family and with those in various groups to which I belong. I have been reading and re-reading the book ever since I got it a year ago, to ingrain the techniques. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It opened my eyes and changed my way of communicating.
This book is a must! Really........2001-12-18
I happened upon this book surfing the net for something else, and when I saw the title, I ordered it right away hoping it would be good. I haven't finished it yet, because my husband and I are reading it aloud to each other whenever we get the chance. But we are well into it, and it is excellent. I can't believe it isn't more popular.
The first part of the book is about how we (as a culture) learn to communicate and use language based on a war model. She gives examples of every war tactic and how that plays out in real-life day-to-day situations. I guarantee, they will all be familiar to you. She doesn't miss much in analyzing how people unintentionally communicate poorly with one another. I went to a party after reading that section and was hyper-aware of how I and others communicated. It was very interesting and helpful. But I couldn't wait to get to the next section on how to communicate well!
The rest of the book is about how to replace the old unhealthy way of communicating with a healthy way of communicating that gives you power and confidence in your day-to-day interactions, and minimizes conflict. Her theory that we need to "take the war out of our words" before we can achieve peace at home and in the world, to me, seems like an obvious but brilliant perception. She seems very dedicated to spreading this message and educating people. I think she does an excellent job. This is the kind of stuff I wish we were learning in our schools! Great read.

This book is for anyone wanting to know how to communicate in a more effective manner with a loved one or a friend. The book gives the reader various scenerarios and lays the ground work for the evolution of your being. It is very easy to read. It is not boring. The authors have done a good job by writing this book.
Excellent Help.......2007-08-07
This book is excellent. Written by people of two perspectives, it is a great source of guidance, insight, and information. I found the assignments provocative, stimulating, and at times, confrontive.
I've done a considerable amount of this kind of work and learned many new things. One of my better book purchases of the year!
Great Experience........2007-05-13
I received this in a timely fashion, and the book was in great shape.
Conflict Analysis.......2007-01-16
This book was very helpful for the class I was taking, but also to help resolve conflict in all areas of life. This book is full of ideas on how to approach difficult situations and resolve them in an affirmative manner.
Use This Instead of the 7th Edition!!.......2006-06-21
If you are taking a class that calls for the 7th Edition, you can use the 6th edition of this book. Not much changed except that a few chapters were switched around. I used the 6th Edition in a class that used the 7th Edition and got an A. : ) I'm sure everyone can think of a lot better ways to spend $90+!
Good luck!
Book Description
From high-level business negotiations to casual conversations among friends, every interpersonal interaction is shaped by cultural norms and expectations. Seldom is this more clearly brought to light than in encounters between people from different cultural backgrounds, when dissimilar communication practices may lead to frustration and misunderstanding. This thought-provoking text presents a new framework for understanding the impact of culture on communication and for helping students build intercultural communication competence. With illustrative examples from around the globe, the book shows that verbal and nonverbal communication involves much more than transmitting a particular message--it also reflects each participant's self-image, group identifications and values, and privacy and relational needs. Readers learn to move effectively and appropriately through a wide range of transcultural situations by combining culture-specific knowledge with mindful listening and communication skills. Throughout, helpful tables and charts and easy-to-follow guidelines for putting concepts into practice enhance the book's utility for students.

Author needs to learn how to communicate.......2004-04-22
I found this book to be very frustrating. Many interesting concepts, but extrememly difficult to read. It seemed like there was a new concept every paragraph, but I was still trying to figure out what the previous paragraph was trying to explain. The APA referencing was also distracting. The author referenced many sources, so just about the time I'd get a flow going in the reading I'd hit a reference that would interrupt my train of thought. Thank goodness we had an excellent teacher in the classroom who could interpret the book for us.
Book Description
"The articles are well-written and informative. . . . All the authors write with authority. . . . This is a sound and interesting . . . text that merits consideration as a library purchase, and has implications for researchers in the field of negotiation studies." --The Service Industries Journal "The essays . . . are of a consistently high standard. . . . The appendixes are well laid out with useful material for those engaged in teaching negotiatory skills, or developing programmes in this field. . . . The essays in this volume cover a wide range of topics. . . . The strength of the book, however, is that it provides a good blend of theory and practice in the art and science of negotiating in diverse settings. The book is well organized in a systematic manner, and deals in a logical way with the interaction processes in negotiating. . . . This book is highly recommended to practitioners who would find much by way of applicable theory developed from practice. It will be of interest to academics, and especially to those who use the case-study method of teaching in graduate courses." --Industrial Relations Journal "Negotiation is a valuable contribution for both negotiators and students of the process. Most of the authors are themselves both innovators in practice and scholars. The book is packed with so much wisdom . . . nuggets of insight and practical advice. Challenged with conveying such wisdom in a chapter, each author comes right to the point, usually in straightforward language, buttressed by vivid examples. It is a must read." --Richard E. Walton, Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration, Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University "Negotiation: Strategies for Mutual Gain is a rich store of creative ideas and valuable advice by leading experts in the field of negotiation and conflict resolution." --Jeswald W. Salacuse, Dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University "Lavinia Hall has managed to pack into a single volume much of this country's most provocative current work on the subject of what is known popularly as 'win-win' negotiations. The book should prove invaluable to those concerned with how we manage our differences--in the workplace, the courtroom, and at home. There is something in this volume for everyone." --Michael Lewis, President, ADR Associates, Washington, DC "Lavinia Hall has pulled together an excellent collection of readings. The articles represent important contributions by many of the leading thinkers in the fields of negotiation and dispute resolution. This is a very useful anthology." --Roy J. Lewicki, Professor of Management and Human Resources,

Great book.......2007-01-19
I needed this book for a inter cultural communication class and so far it's been very interesting.
Excellent introductory work.......2004-12-10
This is an excellent book for students venturing into the field of intercultural communication. Clearly written, with many engaging case studies and examples. As a student, I found it very helpful.
Book Description
Moral Conflict, the subject of this book is passionate and difficult to resolve. Responses that are normally effective such as explaining, persuading, and compromising can make matters worse and drive people further apart in such conflicts. Moral conflicts occur when incommensurate social realities come to clash. Disputes about abortion, religion in politics and education, legal rights for homosexuals, and environmental politics are issues in which well-intentioned parties have created polarized and diverse patterns of communication. The most virtuous actions of each side not only fail, but widen the schism. Such conflicts require us to find forms of communication that go beyond our normal ways of dealing with disagreement. In an original synthesis of communication theory and their own research, W. Barnett Pearce and Stephen W. Littlejohn describe a dialectical tension between the expression and suppression of conflict that can be transcended in ways that lead to personal growth and productive patterns of social action. In
Moral Conflict several projects are described as practical examples of these new ways of working through difficult struggles.

Wonderful book.......1999-03-01
I am reading this book, Moral Conflict, and I recommend it very highly. Intercultural conflict in today's rapidly shrinking world is almost inevitable. The authors bring many practical models which help increase one's options in resolving conflict situations. I VERY highly recommend the book.
