As with all the Audubon guides, the glossy photographs; durable binding and leatherette cover; and cross-referencing the index via the color plates, are what make these guides important.

This rock field guide has a good glossary of terms that is helpful. Also, there are identification keys for color, fabric, and hardness of specimens, along with descriptions indicating areas to locate them.

Unlike the animal and plant field guides, this one hasn't gone out of date like the others. However, the deficencies still apply: the details are pretty general, and the summaries are ridiculously short. Still, this book is one of the best in the series and should be on anyone's shelf that has even a passing interest in geology.

This is a good book for someone who already understands how to use it. There should be an instruction book to go along with it. It has some fine detail in the photos but not in how to look things up by their name. If I had a degree in geology, I would not have a problem using this one, but I don't, so I'm operating under a severe handicap.Is there a guidebook for the Guidebook?

5 out of 5 stars A more serious field guide.......2007-06-29

I bought this book, along with DK/Smithsonian guides to "Rocks & Minerals" and "Gemstones" for my children, one of which is a budding rockhound.

While I am certainly no expert in this area, my very amateur opinion is that this bulky guide is far more scientific and in keeping with traditional field guide format.

The binding is certainly sturdy, and after a short introduction to mineral identification, the book features a photograph of each of the minerals profiled, along with a reference page to the descriptive key that follows. The same is done with rocks.

As a homeschooling mother of two, I would say this book is better for older children or adults with an interest in this field. My 7-yr-old daughter is far more likely to pick up one of the DK/Smithsonian guides (which are separate and less complete) than this one.

I foresee the pages of this book getting a bit more daylight as my children get older.

2 out of 5 stars I turn to michaellandonsrock when you are gone.......2007-01-27

I've written to the National Audubon society and several geologists concerning an omission in this book.

I can't remember when Michael Landon and I discovered our mutual love of geology, but it remained a constant in our friendship. Shortly before he began to film for his finest role as Jonathan Smith in "Highway to Heaven", Michael Landon and I embarked upon a geological survey of Northern Canada. Using his celebrity influence, Michael Landon was granted a royal charter from Franz Joseph II, then Prince of Liechtenstein, to finance any mining capital should we discover a new gem to add to the Prince's famous gem-trunk.

We eventually found a quiet piece of land within the traditional lands of the Nis'gl't'k people. After spending seven months documenting and learning their language I anglicised their name. The "Huxtable people" spoke of a cave famous in their stories for being the home of N'gaask'ul'k'ot, or "Gelman." Instinctively, Michael Landon went there, to Gelman's cave. He refused to use anything but a 10 inch hunting knife when quarrying. He furiously knifed at the cave wall for 4 or 6 hours without any apparent consistency to where his knife struck. Suddenly the cave stank. I looked at Michael Landon with contempt, but to my surprise his face was not sheepish. I wondered then where the smell came from. I followed his peepers, and he was using them to look at a gem that lay before his fallow blade. We both knew what we had discovered, but we consulted our Audubon guide. It wasn't listed. In his excitement, Michael Landon first suggested naming it "stinkrock", then "stankrock" and finally "smellrock." I took on a soothing tone to pacify him and delicately suggested we call it the "Landonquicklyite." He put a single finger to his pursed lips, furrowed his brow, squatted, started walking around while squatting, and then eagerly said "let's call it Michael Landon's Rock." Kenneth Waltz later characterised our relationship as having a power imbalance, probably a reason why the gem came to be known among us and in some geological circles as "michaellandonsrock."

In weight comparable to the density of those memories, I still have 10 pounds of michaellandonsrock. I even put some in the rock tumbler and they look nice.

So, perhaps my review is biased, but I hope that in the future the Audubon Society will investigate my claim.

Marble Mania has fine photographs of every imaginable marble from pebbles found alongside streams to the Industrial Revolution in Germany & Austria. Here the cutting of agate cubes & polishing them into marbles for export all over the world became a huge cottage industry. You have to see the beauty of all the clay, pottery, crockery, china & porcelain globes. It was fun to read this big book. Found myself chatting at the local recycle shop about the blue canning jars in their windows filled with marbles. Eyeing them eagerly, with a little more knowledge & a few more names.

I bought this book for my husband (from Amazon) for Xmas. Not only is the book very beautiful, but he has become an expert in his own right. With a year-2000 interest in things retro, marbles are enjoying a boom. We now have jars of them everywhere, looking great and, according to this great book, appreciating in value as we watch. With the help of the pricing guides we discovered that we already owned some very valuable marbles, and have since acquired more. In fact, the book paid for itself about 10 minutes after we got it, with the discovery of an unrecognized treasure.

Marble Mania will prove to be the standard to which other marble related books will be compared to. A thorough, comprehensive view of all aspects of marble collecting. Graphically superior with detail that will be utilized by not only the beginning collector but the advanced collector also. Mr. Block has taken the time, performed the research and compiled this vast amount of information into an enjoyable, eye and mind satisfying beautiful book. Mr. Block is clear in his intentions to continue to be the leader in an area of great challenge, I can't wait for Mr. Block's next marble book. The bar has been raised!

This guide is not super in-depth and so it should be concidered more a collectible than a guide ...

First off, it is way too compressed to cover the four games (I, II, Ocarina & Majora) as deep as I believe it should have. In my opinion this guide should be twice as thick as it is (especially concidering it's selling price). It honestly seems like a bit of a rush job. There are a number of small errors throughout the guide and quite a few omissions of pertinent info. There should have been a competent editor on hand to put in a good final inspection before release.
The overworld maps are less than stellar and Zelda artwork/illustrations are minimal. This guide gives you the basic meat and potatoes (for the most part) and leaves everything else to speculation and exploration on your own.

If you are looking for a highly indepth guidebook this is not it ... I suppose some people like info kept to a minimum, but I would have preferred a book worthy of being concidered "collectible". I honestly believe the creators of this guide had zero passion for the project, or were put in a stranglehold by the upper-crust, because this guide could have been so much richer in content ... you'd think with the fact these games have played such a large part in the success of Nintendo that they would have at least invested a little more in it.

3 stars because it does help and also because I'm feeling generous today ;)

I received this book as an early Christmas gift and now I'm buying a dozen copies to give to friends and family. This is the most beautiful and interesting collecting book I've ever read. The author is remarkably funny while delivering all the information on the subject anyone could possibly absorb. Just a fantastic effort.

I own a massive library of books on every imaginable collecting subject and none has given me more joy than "Chasing Rainbows". Barry Friedman has intertwined his vast knowledge of Indian blankets, American history, the antiques business and garnished the result with a unique sense of humor and breathtaking photos to create a book that is an absolute gem. This is a great book from a very gifted man.

This book is a visual feast and has lots of interesting information. I wish the author would have put more info about prices and less about Seminole dolls. I did enjoy it and will use it for reference in the future. Good book in a field that is lacking information (Indian doll collecting).

This was a waste of time and money for me. The Title says for collectors and the cover says with prices. I found it to be a loose collection of pictures with VERY little information on any of the dolls. The vast majority of dolls have no priceing and the few that do have, in my opinion, unrealistic prices. Wondered how a publisher would put money into such a waste until I looked. Self published.

    Stuart L. Schneider's dynamic Halloween In America: A Collector's Guide With Prices spectacularly captures the spirit of the classic years of the American Halloween tradition: the period from the turn of the century through the end of the nineteen-fifties. Though the book includes more recent material, Schneider wisely focuses on what he recognizes to be the holiday's glory days in this country, when its spirit hadn't moved too far from its agricultural roots and American culture was predominantly positive, forward-looking, and uncynical--and its Halloween decorations charming and vividly imaginative.

    The book opens with three short, loosely-composed essays, "A Brief History Of Halloween," "The Colors And Images Of Halloween," and "Halloween In America." Schneider, who provides no source material, is often broadly correct but specifically wrong. He suggests, for instance, that the Druids may have built Stonehenge when it has been long established that they did not, and that 'Dryad' is another word for 'Druid.' The author also writes a paragraph about witches and "witch conventions" during the Celtic reign of the British Isles as if this were an established historical fact, embellishing his account with images of witches stirring cauldrons, speaking in tongues, dancing around bon fires, and sacrificing animals; if Schneider knows this to be historically factual, then he has access to information the rest of the world doesn't. He also discusses 'Samhain' as a god of the Celtic people who "controlled the dead or non-growing season," when whether or not 'Samhain' was a Celtic deity or even an entity, rather than a season or holiday, is something currently hotly debated among historians, scholars, and Wiccans.

    Schneider is to be commended for his honesty in addressing some of the more unpleasant aspects of the holiday and its associations head-on, as well as for the wonderful historical scope he provides in placing Halloween origins in a wide, multi-cultural context. Readers will find a rich phantasmagoria of topics discussed in the essays, including the custom of sin eating, All Saints' and All Souls' Days, the belief in the 'veil between worlds' and the return of the dead to their families one the night of the harvest feast, the story of 'Jack of the Lantern,' Snap-Apple and Crack-Nut Nights, apple bobbing, fortune-telling, the Scottish influence on American Halloween traditions, Cabbage and Mischief Nights, the various theories surrounding the origin of trick-or-treating, the meaning of the literal 'scapegoat' and its influence of the appearance of the Christian Devil, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and even mention of the elves, gnomes, boogies, and goblins with which agrarian societies peopled the forests and fields.

    The gorgeous main portion of the book is dedicated to collectible items and includes sections on Postcards, Decorations, Lanterns, Costumes, Hats and Masks, Noisemakers, Invitations, Games and Toys, Trick Or Treat Bags, and Vegetable People, Figurines and Candy Containers.

    Halloween In America is by far the best of the books on Halloween collectibles available, and also the best of the Schiffer books on the subject. Many readers will remember these items from their childhood homes, classroom bulletin boards, Five & Dime store shelves and windows, and neighborhood parties. Readers will also be astonished at how the painters, artisans, and creators of these crepe paper, cardboard, composition, glass, and celluloid items were able to envision and capture what we remember and still think of as the very essence of holiday, and in a wide variety of forms: lonely, barren, orange-skied landscapes with setting suns ablaze or yellow rising moons, black cats and owls lurking in pumpkin patches with an anthropomorphic moon overhead, witches flying on broomsticks in formation over dark, isolated houses, skeletons parading in graveyards, etc.

    Folklorists, sociologists, academics, and artists may have special appreciation for the visionary and sometimes surreal paintings, illustrations, and three-dimensional designs revealed here. One 1908 German postcard portrays a witch, a black cat and a vegetable spirit riding in a car made of a partially hollowed-out watermelon with squash-slice tires; another portrays a red-caped witch riding a immense cob of husked corn like a phallus-conquering Amazon through the stratosphere, with an astonished moon and planet Jupiter looking on; and a third, from 1911, shows children happily bobbing for apples in their warm, cozy home, while a tall, red-skirted, stone-faced witch, accompanied by an owl and a black cat, looks in at the window like the ultimate outsider and a disenfranchised, but still proud and powerful, loner. An entire page is devoted to 1910 postcards of anthropomorphic vegetables riding cars, dancing with or chasing fairies, and joyfully imitating human family practices. Others display Rockwell-like scenes of boys and girls carving pumpkins or trick-or-treating, or elderly women in dimly-lit Victorian mansions being frightened by children's pranks and high jinks.

    Throughout the book, visionary landscapes and distant horizons beckon; curly-toed elves spring from hollow trees and slide gleefully down rooftops; lone witches warm their hands at their cauldrons under brilliant, star-filled skies; beautiful young ladies sleep fitfully on ruffled pillows while fairies circle their heads; peaked-hat shadows stretch in threateningly at midnight doorways; black cats screech to their own banjo, accordion, violin, and horn playing; and scarecrows extend their arms heavenwards to frighten off their circling opponents.

    Readers will run for their magnifying and/or reading glasses so that none of the often minute detail will escape their gaze and inspection. Halloween In America is a huge treat, will make collectors and seekers out of most, and hopefully inspire generations to come to celebrate and pass on the traditions recorded here. Highly recommended to holiday lovers, educators, folklorists, Scout leaders, and all lovers of Americana.

    This is much more than a book for collectors of Halloween.This is the best book on the subject. I've read all the others and this is the bible of Halloween. If you have only one book on Halloween, this has to be the one. It brings back childhood. This book is really a look at what Halloween means. Ghosts and goblins, fall colors, adventure and childhood fears. I've read mine over and over and over again.

      Although advertising has a history that goes back thousands of years, it is the Americans who have made it into an art form. Advertisements were put on everything from pocket mirrors to memo pads, the sides of barns to the sides of carriages and buses. A history of advertising printed in the 1880s even show and advertisement on a tombstone. With the advent of color lithography in the late 1800s, some of the most beautiful and highly collectible items were created. Tin signs with colorful, strong images, often embossed, were made for stores, and often found their way into homes. Paper advertising in calendars, trade cards, and posters reached new levels of artistry in the latter years of the 19th century. This new book explores advertising in all its media, tin, paper, celluloid, and enamel. In full color it portrays the creativity of its makers, while at the same time bringing to life the styles of the past 120 years. Included are signs, three dimensional designs, smalls, and novelties. With some tin signs bringing in excess of $100,000 (a Campbell Soup sign included in this book), it is clear that this is an active and exciting area for collectors. At the same time, it is a good field for the new collector, who can find many pieces of advertising for under $50. Both ends of the spectrum are nicely covered in Antique advertising: America for Sale, making it an important book for all collectors.

      This book provides an extensive pictorial description of each piece of furniture shown from this period with an accompanying detailed caption describing the furniture in great detail including the different woods available for that particular piece. Many of these pictorial descriptions are copies of the original advertisements,making them very authentic. It is a must for every collector of furniture from this period!

      Norwegian adventurer Johan Adrian Jacobsen collected more than two thousand Yup'ik objects during his travels in Alaska in 1882 and 1883. Now housed in the Berlin Ethnological Museum, the Jacobsen collection remains one of the earliest and largest from Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. When Ann Fienup-Riordan first saw the collection being unpacked in 1994, she was "stunned to find this extraordinary Yup'ik collection, with accession records still handwritten in old German script and almost completely unpublished."

      In 1997, Fienup-Riordan and Yup'ik translator Marie Meade returned to Berlin with a delegation of Yup'ik elders to study Jacobsen's collection. Yup'ik Elders at the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin recounts fourteen days during which the elders examined objects from the collection and described how they were made and used. Their descriptions, based on oral history and firsthand experience with similar objects, are imparted through songs, stories, and personal narratives. Woven together with Jacobsen's writings, technical descriptions, and accession information, the narrative presents a vast array of knowledge. For example, Jacobsen had observed that large grass mats were woven for use as sleeping mats in houses and were often taken on journeys; a Yup'ik elder demonstrates how the grass mat would be folded and fitted into a kayak. Another elder describes a dance in which fox masks similar to those in the collection were used. Yet another elder, inspired by a carving of a paalraayak, launches into a story about the creature, which was sometimes encountered in the mountains near her home.

      An introductory essay describes Jacobsen's life and trip to Alaska and the region as it was then and as it is today. Informal snapshots show the elders interacting with the objects and miming their use, while Barry McWayne's large color photographs make possible the "visual repatriation" of this extraordinary collection. Yup'ik Elders at the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin also includes extensive notes summarizing accession information, a glossary of Yup'ik object names, and a detailed index.

      This is the first time a major Arctic collection has been presented from the Natives' point of view, an example of "reverse fieldwork" that can enrich understanding of Native American collections the world over.

      I must qualify that I am writing this review as an individual, and not as a representative of the State. However, I am blessed to have one of the best jobs in Alaska working in the Visitor Services section of the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka. Having said that, this work is one of the most helpful, readable resources available for those with an interest in Yup'ik ethnology and material culture. Ms. Fienup-Riordan's respect for the Yup'ik people is evident in all of her work, and this book is no exception.

      This book chronicles a 14 day research visit to the Ethnologisches Berlin Museum by Ms. Fienup-Riordan and a delegation of Yup'ik Elders. Written in a very readable narrative style, Ms. Fienup-Riordan successfully captures volumes of interpretive knowledge shared by elders in reaction to individual artifacts. The book is presented as a day-by-day, artifact-by-artifact journal of the research team's exploration of a very comprehensive collection of Yup'ik artifacts gathered in the early 1880's by Norwegian Johan Adrian. Readers will also be impressed with the books outstanding collection of artifact photos.

      I am asking my wife for this book as a Christmas present. It would make a suitable addition to both an anthropologist's research library and any Alaskan's coffee-table book stack. Great job to all involved!
