I've recently returned to knitting and bought this book after many months of passing it in the book store. In fact, it was the cover that started making me itch to pick up the needles again. If you've ever felt the urge to design your own, this book will definitely give you ideas to start from.

5 out of 5 stars Nicky Epstein's Knitted Embellishments.......2007-05-13

Inspirational with step by step instructions. A must have for the knitter that just loves to knit, this book will have you doing so much more. Wonderful use of knitted cords, great edges, fringes, tassel and emroidery stitches. You will always add that special touch to your knitting. Thank you Nicky for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-04-11

I have Ms Epstein's other books,Knitting Over The Edge: Unique Ribs, Cords, Appliques, Colors, Nouveau: The Second Essential Collection of Decorative Borders which I enjoyed and Knitting Beyond the Edge: Cuffs and Collars*Necklines*Hems*Closures - The Essential Collection of Decorative Finishes about which I was somewhat less enthused. I decided to get this book, because I was looking for ideas for embelishments, and there it was: "Embellishments," just what I was looking for, so I got it.

I think some of the appliqués are quite imaginative, particularly some of the leaves and pieced flower designs as well as many of the knitted cord appliqué designs, like the Celtic knots and most of the closures in the last few pages of the book. (I do love "frogs.") I will certainly try the technique myself.

The appliqué cord technique was also used effectively for faux cables, and although I enjoy tackling a complex cable from time to time as an exercise, I could see the appliqué system for cables as a very effective way of getting a project completed. It would also allow one to experiment with a design to decide what type of cable looks best on a completed sweater, and just where on the sweater it will most enhance the wearer--and all this without having to rip apart the sweater and do it over again!

The integration of beading into some of the edgings was also interesting and not something I would have thought of myself, because I'm not (yet) a beader. I could imagine the technique making something very special from something quite simple. However some of the designs for heavily beaded tassels seem just way too over the top.

I also like the way cross stitch and embroidery in flosses or yarns could be added to a finished sweater to give the piece the look of fairisle, intarsia, entrelac, and tapestry without the bulk and carryovers that occur with the first two.

I am not, however, a great fan of "bobbles" or raised edgings. I enjoy the technique of the former for its cleverness, and have added bobbles to things like purses, but they tend to make knitted and crocheted products look bulky and awkward in places that should probably not be emphasized on some individuals. (My figure, for instance, is bulky and awkward enough thank you.) Maybe on a very slim person, but definitely not a decorative technique I'd use for the more "mature" shape.

The designs are well illustrated and enlarged enough for the reader to see the techniques displayed. The author uses the method of charted instructions, which I usually find somewhat difficult to follow but which I can see as very useful for visualizing the finished product and its construction.

Most of my objections, though valid from my own perspective, might not be true of others. Maybe one likes heavily beaded tassles, maybe someone else enjoys bobbles. As one of the other reviewers notes; there's something for everyone in this book.

All in all a book well worth the price to add to ones craft library.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Something for Everyone.......2007-02-10

I know, I know: "don't judge a book by its cover." But that is exactly why I had passed on this instructional before. The cover - which doesn't invite anyone to even pick up this book - is an awful diversion from the quality of information found here. Apparently, Epstein found an new editor or photographer to give her current works much, much more visual appeal.

Recently, I bought this and was surprised at what I found. This book is a great place to start! It's actually the 'Cliff Notes' to Epstein's other works - a springboard into the 'Edge' series. I have not bought any of the "Edge" series, only because they seem overwhelming and I didn't think I would actually use them (at least at this point in my knitting life). There is enough variation in patterns, ideas, and techniques to challenge and inspire anyone! This skimmed version is a great place to start. I'm encouraged to pick up her other books and reweigh their value in my knitting library.

5 out of 5 stars Great BOOK!.......2007-01-16

My cut and sew knitwear professor recommended this book to me because it clearly illustrates every step to the knit embellishments. I really love the book and frequently refer to it when I need help coming up with a good idea to improve knit garments. I would recommend this book to a pro or an amatuer because it is really simple to follow along.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best in it's field .......2006-03-01

This book is one of the best in it's filed --at least of the ones that I have seen. I am a great Nicky Epstein fan, because she is so thorough and knows her stuff. You can find a ton of inspiration to embellish and improve your knitted pieces, or any other garment, bag, hat, pillow, toy, etc., for that matter, as the embellishments shown will be wonderful to personalize any item you wish to "treat". The instructions are precise and detailed enough for any but the novice knitter, without being too lengthy. The pictures give you a clear impression of what your result will be. I am glad to have bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-08-28

Another excellent book by Jane Townswick. I am looking forward to expressing my artistic side in beautiful artwork. This book is very helpful with tools needed and forms of application. I am very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Townswick.......2007-07-17

This is a must buy book for those interested in applique. I have many applique books and count this among the very best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and realistic.......2001-04-30

Over 130 pages of great instruction and realistic photos that show that anyone who takes the time can do applique. Not only are the designs that you can Xerox for patterns crisp, but the instruction is easy to read and follow. And the photos are exact size, so you see what you will get when you are done.

I liked the book because it also says that we can choose our own material, which suits our own desires, where some books say you have to have this or that type of material made by this ir that maker, and you end up running all over the place and come home discouraged and throw your hands up and say *&%#@+ and vow never to try and do applique again.

This is the book that can help you become less discouraged and a success at a wonderful art form.

5 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to easy applique techniques & projects........2000-08-06

Make your applique a work of art through Artful Applique The Easy Way which features detailed project instructions for sixteen blocks filled with flowers, birds, and wreathes. The focus on easy applique includes tips for streamlining and patterns for quick use. Superb introduction to easy applique techniques & projects.

As a highly skilled fiber artist raised and trained in Japan but residing in the United States for the past decade and a half, Kumiko Sudo brings an interesting combination of Eastern and Western sensibilities to her work. She draws on the ancient Japanese motif of the kamon, or family crest, utilizing these varied designs as the basis for a collection of one-of-a-kind quilts. Yet she fashions them out of materials that, though they have a very Japanese flavor, are actually contemporary American fabrics (and therefore easily approximated by modern stitchers). She provides color photos, setting diagrams, brief basic instructions, and full templates for 30 gorgeous quilt blocks. Quilters seeking a vibrant new take on the traditional Western quilt block should enjoy making these lovely designs. --Amy Handy

Book Description

Presents 30 extraordinary quilt designs derived from crests dating back to more than a thousand years. Centuries-old designs are combined with new, rich color choices and contemporary fabrics for an effect never seen in quiltmaking. Each block is accompanied by the story behind the design and step-by-step instructions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfection!.......2006-05-18

This book is full of beautiful ideas. Most of the projects are small so the "fear of applique" is tempered by the fact that you can make one crest, frame it with beautiful fabric borders and you have a terrific piece of art without having to commit to a huge applique project. But the journey is well worth it - everything I've made with Ms. Sudo's inspirational direction has turned out perfectly. I'm anxious to get started on more!

5 out of 5 stars Circles Of The East.......2005-09-03

This is a great quilt book with wonderful pictures and great instructions..it arrived in plenty of time and in good shape

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-07-17

I saw this book at a quilt store a couple months ago, and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it. I'm not a big quilter (I also cross-stitch) but I like applique and now I'm doing a queen size one with fifteen of the patterns in this book! It's great!

5 out of 5 stars This book wakes up the artist within........1998-06-25

To say that Kumiko Sudo's Circles of the East is inspirational is an understatement. It is a beautiful book to read, even if you never make one quilt block from it's pages. The whole history of Japanese Crest designs is entertaining enough, but the fact that I could actually replicate Kumiko's art is incredible. I made the Gingko design using my machine with great results although all Kumiko's work is done by hand. Her templates are exact, but she does not include full size placement diagrams. I dreaded getting to the placement part of sewing my block, but it was way easier than I thought...The most interesting aspect of her work to me is her seemingly complete disregard of grainline and total obsession with placement of fabric motifs...it gives her blocks stunning symmetry that I haven't seen anywhere else...really exotic!

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful & inspiring quilt book I have ever seen........1998-03-20

I accidentally found this book in a quilt shop. I could hardly wait to get started. The photos are awesome, the workmanship is unparalleled and the use of fabrics is inspirational. The book is well written and the instructions are clear.

There are no instructions for Kumiko's method of binding these quilts.

I have intermediate sewing skills but had never quilted before. This foundation piecing method is the way to go! The blocks turn out beautiful everytime. It is so easy and very addictive! 5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Introduction into the World of Foundation Piecing.......2001-10-23

With this book you learn to easily foundation piece cats, cows, lions, monkeys, elephants, chickens, bunnies, pelicans, eagles, peacocks, butterflies, cardinals, hummingbirds, kangaroos, and soooooo much more with readily understandable instructions.

The book is a great reference for other sewing projects and consists of 112 pages so it's rather thin. The book covers basic embroidery stitches (chain, french knot, stem, and more) with directions and illustrations, ways to add borders with directions and illustrations, assembling the quilt top, binding, and quilting of the finished work. There's a section pertaining to fabric selection and sewing materials/equipment.

I'd never paper pieced in my life and this book covered all the bases to complete these mini-quilts in a short period of time with professional looking results. I've surprised several family members with my work!

If you need a quilting book with easy to make animals, purchase this book as you will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Artwork, not patchwork, beautiful quilting easily done.......2001-05-12

The cover of this book really does not do justice to the designs inside. They are truly beautiful works of art--unique and magnificantly simple in their construction. The Noah's Ark quilt is a classic. Particularly helpful are two examples of the same animal square with the different types of fabric. One can easily see the dramatic difference that selection of fabric and color make in the final design. As my first project as a quilter, I made the rooster from fat quarters as a birthday present for my sister. If I do say so myself, it looks fabulous! With Ms. Rolfe's techniques of foundation quilting you do not have to worry about cutting exact shapes (except once for the entire block), nor about grain of the fabric. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. For Xmas, I plan to make pot holders from the designs as gifs. I'm even thinking about tackling the Noah's Ark quilt--for myself! I ordered more of her books because I enjoy her easy-going manner to quilting and the professional looking results!

5 out of 5 stars Applique the Basics & Beyond: The Complete Guide.......2007-09-27

This book gives a very good overview of many different types of applique along with the steps to achieve a finnished piece. I looked at several books on the subject and this was the best that I found. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Instructional book.......2007-06-11

This book is a great tool for applique. It answers most questions beginners have.

4 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide.......2007-05-28

This is a wonderful instruction book on multiple ways to applique. The instructions are clearly written and the photographs are wonderful and easy to follow. This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in applique.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Your Quilting Library.......2007-05-24

I am one of those people who is not at all interested in doing one of those huge beautiful quilts other quilt artists create because it is such a time consuming process. I prefer smaller projects which I know will get finished farily soon, and which can be picked up and put down easily. I love applique and when I found this book I knew I had found the book for me. All of the projects in the book are fairly small and portable, and the book is very well detailed and presented. From start to finish, you get the usual primer in materials, technique, use of fabric and color, then you get plenty of projects to keep you busy if you don't find your own to do. The fact that the book is spiral bound is a great help when laying it out on the table for reference. If you're into smaller projects the way I am then this is another book for you.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so happy with this book........2007-05-16

I couldn't wait to open this book when it came and now I can't seem to put it down. It is so easy to read and follow the instructions. Janet has surely written it for all levels trying applique.

5 out of 5 stars DSQuilting.......2007-08-13

I love this book! Ever since I received it, I've been creating gifts and making friends so happy! From the cards to Stevie cat to heating pad covers, it's a joy to have a book such as this to be inspired from. My dream is to make one of her quilts, especially Drunk Love. Thanks Denyse and keep the books and ideas coming!

5 out of 5 stars This book is pure fun.......2007-06-10

This is one of my favourite craft books. Most of the projects are fairly quick so making gifts that people will love is a breeze. I helped a friend who had never sewed before make Steve the cat. She was so happy with it. Her husband couldn't believe that she had made it herself. This a great book to get people excited about sewing because a beautiful and inexpensive project can be completed in less than 2 hours. I hope Denyse will write another book soon. I'd love to see Steve the dog and some funky bags and hats.

5 out of 5 stars Quilted Items Made Easy.......2007-05-16

I originally found this book in the library and decided I had to have it. There are 30 quilting projects that are simple and unique. I am a fabric junky and have lots of smaller pieces of material that can be used for most of these great ideas. The instructions are detailed and easy to understand. You can't miss with this book. Thank you Denyse Schmidt!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect teaching beginners and inspiring for experienced quilters.......2007-05-07

I loved this book. I borrowed it from a friend. I used and read it so many times that I could not bring myself to give it back and to buy a second one. The projects are modern and fun. I have already used many of the patterns to make presents. And the instructions are simple and easy to follow. (I only began sewing 6 months ago and was able to follow without a problem). This sewing book was worth every penny. Buy it! You won't regret it!

3 out of 5 stars Mehh.......2007-02-01

Years ago I saw Denise Schmidt profiled on Christopher Lowell of all places. Her designs stuck with me, but so did her technique, someone else did all the sewing and then she sent her quilt tops off to be finished by Amish quilters. I sort of thought it was like cheating. I don't know if this is how her process still works, but the book sure feels that way. The quilts are still wonderfully designed, fun and feel good to look at, but the projects are so simplistic it's like she wasn't even trying.
While it's tons of fun to look at, I'm very glad I got it at the library. It's really not worth paying for. She should really get kudos for her aesthetic, not her technique.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Embellishment Techniques.......2007-08-23

This book arrived in fast time and in good condition. I was surprised at how quickly I received the item.

5 out of 5 stars Embellishments.......2007-07-16

Wow! I was very surprised. The techniques are simple but very effective. The photos of finished products are classy looking, and not overdone. The colors are subdued. Less is definitely more. The diagrams are very clear. The advice and recommendations are excellent. I've already tried a few of the techniques with great success. Highly recommended if you want to add that extra little something to make your garments stand out, but not look gaudy.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, in-depth techniques, beautifully written.......2007-05-08

This book is wonderful. If you want to create your own beautiful clothes from scratch, this is the book for you. She tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about beading, threadwork, trims, bindings and pipings, and applique. The possibilities are endless!!!

4 out of 5 stars Reccomended for beginner in dressmaking.......2006-11-10

Beautiful edition. The book contains some interesting embellishments' ideas from vintage fashion, but on the whole it describes basic methods of embellishments and finishing garments, as bias binding, piping etc. There is interesting chapter about using bead work as garment trimming. I would say, it's a good guide for beginners in dressmaking.

4 out of 5 stars Well written book but skimped on some sections.......2006-05-16

I bought this book primarily for its section on passementrie but found a wealth of information on beading, bobbin embroidery and braiding. I noticed though that one of the braid samples, the 3-strand with a chevron pattern did not have illustrated or written instructions, which was disappointing as the traditional 3-strand weave, that we know through girl's pig tails, was documented in the book. Another disappointment was that the passementrie section had no pictures. Granted, Ms. Conlon's goal was to allow the reader to create their own designs but an example for a finished piece would have been helpful. It is a technique that's very hard to find material on and I thought this book would have filled that gap to an extent. Rouleau faggotting was a surprise treat and seems easy to recreate. The overall quality of the book is what I'd expect from Taunton press and worth buying. I just wish there was more 'eye candy'. This book could have easily been 200+ pages without tiring the reader with its lovely examples and well written instructions.
