Misleading classification.......2007-08-28
The search subjects for this book bill it as "secondary" and "high school" language arts. After receiving the book, I can see that it is very much for elementary level teachers. All the pictures, examples, and suggested resources are elementary level.
The book does look like an excellent resource for elementary teachers.

Book Description
This book helps teachers to infuse literacy instruction into all content areas. The authors present a rich panoply of engaging instructional strategies that research has shown to be effective for improving reading and writing in middle and secondary school students.
After discussing common questions asked by content area teachers, a full chapter is devoted to each of eight strategies–anticipatory activities, read-alouds/shared reading, questioning, notetaking/notemaking, graphic organizers, vocabulary instruction, writing to learn, and reciprocal teaching–coupling discussions with examples from the author's own research in a diverse, urban secondary school. Features a common structure for presenting each strategy–1) scenario of a teacher using the strategy; 2) rationale for the strategy and its supporting research; and 3) descriptions of how the strategy works and authentic examples of the strategy in use.
Additionally, in order to meet the challenge of today's inclusive, multicultural classrooms, the book presents only those strategies that have been proven effective with all learners - including struggling readers and those for whom English is not their first language.

Book Description
The third edition of Fifty Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners includes a rich assortment of practical features to support teachers as they meet some of the more daunting challenges of the 21st century classroom. All of the strategies in this book are aligned to the TESOL standards and have been field-tested in diverse classrooms. Each strategy includes a brief explanation, step-by-step instructions in how to plan and use the strategy and two classroom scenarios demonstrating how the strategy can be adapted for different grade levels and content areas. A new unique DVD included in the back of the text illustrates select strategies being used in a classroom dominated by English learners. After the demonstration lesson, one of the authors interviews the teacher for insights into how the lesson was planned and the teacher's reasons for choosing the strategy. The strategies include planning approaches, strategies for improving student involvement, vocabulary knowledge, and comprehension..
Organized into five sections which flow easily from theory and planning, through learner involvement and vocabulary building, to increasing comprehension. Numerous strategies in the theoretical overview section, plus suggestions for assessment integrated into many strategies in other sections. Provides a repertoire of non-traditional assessment ideas such as anecdotal records, performance samples, and portfolios. Integrates material on the use of educational technology such as the internet, visual aids, etc. Includes thorough, concise summary of relevant research from Krashen, Cummins, Terrell, Swain, Asher, and others.
For Educators.
Customer Reviews:
Practical for Secondary Teachers.......2007-06-27
This book was worth the money. It is appropriate for secondary teachers (and many things out there are geared more toward elementary). It has a brief introduction to the theory behind the text in the beginning and then the rest is pratctical, skill-based lessons/activites for English Language Learners. As a language arts teacher, my only minor disappointment was that some of the lessons are geared more toward general content areas like social studies and science, but there is still plenty of good stuff for me to use.
actually helpful for teachers.......2007-03-29
As an ESL teacher, I find this book actually to be useful for my grad school class and my own practice. Pretty happy with the purchase.
intellsabby.......2007-03-11
This book is a step by step technique just as the title states. Great for any student teacher that needs a clear visual explanation on how to help ell's. For already teachers in the field it is a good refence book to help them focus on how other techniques can be applicable to thier lesson planning.
every esl teacher need this.......2007-01-19
This book is well organized and coordinated with tesol objectives. Very user friendly, this is a must have resource for all ages.
Excellent for ELL in Elementary.......2006-06-15
I found this book had great strategies to apply in an elementary setting for all my students.

Excellent Literacy Resource For Teachers........2007-06-03
I learned about this book at a workshop on reading and literacy in my district last year. I checked it out from my local teaching library and after 3 renewals and a bunch of late notices later I realized I never wanted to return it! I had my own copy two days later. I use this book every week in the classroom. Mr. Gallagher developed a resource that kids can relate to because it was written in part (or at least inspired by) his students. There are 40 mini lessons that are broken down into 9 categories of why reading is important. They are very interesting and they made the kids think. I noticed as the year went on I saw many more novels and magazines appearing in my class as the year went on. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed!
Reading Reasons.......2007-01-22
Fantastic book! I'd recommend it to all elementary and English teachers. It has many useful and motivational ideas to use.
Great book for motivation for reading!.......2007-01-16
The lessons in this book are wonderful. It gives students a practical reason for reading. It is the kind of book you can read and immediately put it into practice. You don't have to sit back for weeks and figure out how to incorporate it. It's all there right in front of you. I want to hear more from Gallagher!!!
Reading Reasons by Gallagher.......2006-06-27
Reading Reasons is a great resource. It provides reasearch and lesson activities from someone who deals with students on a daily basis -- a teacher! The book is very user friendly.
a MUST for all teachers!.......2004-10-23
As a middle school Reading teacher for 14 years, I have been exposed to more theories than I can count on how to get kids to read and improve their skills. In the last few years, the focus has been on specific reading strategies--teaching them to students to help them improve their comprehension.
I see now that a major piece of the puzzle has been missing. We are so focused on teaching kids HOW to read that we have forgotten to teach them WHY they should read. Those of us who are good readers do not need any such convincing. Increasingly more students, however, do not see any value in reading and therefore do not do it, or do not do it well.
Gallagher's book outlines nine reasons WHY students need to read and read well. They are set up in the format of mini-lessons to teach directly to students. The lessons are simple and would appeal to most students. Throughout the book there is great insight, and there is also a lot of great advice for setting up a true reading-inspiring classroom.
I have shelves full of reference books on reading. This is the one I will go back to again and again.

Reading that Provokes Good Discussions.......2006-09-27
This book was a good read, but it provided even better discussions with other teachers, especially across content areas. If you ever get the chance to hear Doug Fisher talk in person he is even better than the book and worth any admission price.
I would buy any other book he writes about literacy or school-wide change.
Improving Adolescent Literacy: Strategies at Work .......2006-01-28
The book arrives in perfect condition. I'm pleased with the purchase.
Practical and down-to-earth.......2005-09-25
Fisher and Frey provide an excellent array of strategies that have employed in the classroom. The beauty of this book is that it is based on their own classroom experience at the secondary level--not merely one from past experiences, but on-going and current experiences as they continue to work at San Deigo state and their local high school. Their text is much better than the usual text one gets in Secondary Education classes that are based on controlled or purely observational data.

Book Description
Do you have a minute? That's how quickly this book will help you improve your students' reading skills. Designed to be read on the run and make every minute count in your classroom, Reading Reminders features Jim Burke's one hundred best techniques for teaching reading, complete with tools and tips on how to implement them.
Jim wrote this book to help teachers like himself whose often large and always diverse classrooms contain a wide range of reading abilities and needs. All of the strategies have been tested and tested again with his students, and each one has achieved significant gains in student performance, confidence, and engagement. Together, the reminders will challenge your best students and support struggling ones. This book will help you:
- teach students to read a variety of types of texts, including websites, tests, literature, and textbooks
- use a wide range of teaching and reading strategies based on current reading research
- anchor your teaching in state and national reading standards
- establish and maintain a comprehensive reading program that includes Sustained Silent Reading and direct instruction
- plan your lessons, select your texts, and assess students' learning with tools and techniques specifically designed for those purposes
- improve your students' ability to discuss and understand what they read
- develop a community of reflective readers within your classroom
- increase the amount of writing your students do.
Customer Reviews:
Superior Organization.......2003-07-19
I've been using Reading Reminders all summer to plan my sophomore reading class strategies next year. I love the organization of this book. Links to related sections are easy to find. Burke gives wonderful examples of so many worthwhile lesson ideas, like dense questioning, making connections, and repeated reading. There are dozens more. I can hardly wait to give my students the reading survey and to run off all the graphic organizers in the appendix!
As a 16-year teacher, I am often disapointed by workshops on reading that are really aimed at the elementary grades and "retrofitted" for high schoolers. This book is a high school teacher's dream.
Superlative.......2003-01-07
As a 26 year veteran of the high school English classroom, I am thrilled with Jim Burke's latest book, Reading Reminders. It has come at a perfect time as well since, like many schools in our state, we have adopted a reading goal as part of our school improvement plan. Not one of the teachers in my department has a reading endorsement or any idea of how to teach reading. So this book has been incredibly helpful to us all (as well as to colleagues in other departments). It is so practical, so well-researched and thought out! It also reminds me of some of the best practice I engaged in when I started teaching but have somehow forgotten over the years. I also appreciate how easy it is to use - you can start implementing the strategies immediately although I think it is most effective to read it through beforehand to appreciate how beautifully it aligns with what is overall best practice in teaching English. Having done a great deal of research lately on this subject, I have not found any materials to equal this book.
(I also give his English Teacher's Companion to all of our new English teachers. They invariably rave about it.)
Want instant results from your students?.......2002-09-12
Without a doubt, this book (and anything else by Mr. Burke) is a must have for any teacher of Reading or English. How Mr. Burke finds the time to put together such wonderful resources is beyond this mere mortal of an English teacher, but I would be lost without Reading Reminders. I literally put some of the strategies to work the day after I bought the book. Several of my collegues rushed out and bought it after seeing the results I was getting. If you have struggling readers, this book will breathe new life into them--and you!
10 Star home run.......2002-08-21
The books description "Do you have a minute? That's how quickly this book will help you improve your students' reading skills. " is a start.
What this book does is teach the facilitator be they public, private or even homeschooling how to get a students attention as well as how to inspire the student to do more than simply read words. I especially like his recommendation on silent reading and how to orally share what one has read and what the author has attempted to convey. This is really important since many students see reading as a chore and end up buying abbreviated books that skim the book and little else. I believe the book can be a valuable tool for parents as well, and that the student whose teacher has read this book, will become a student who also reads quality books for pleasure.
A must have!.......2001-12-22
Today's language arts classrooms wouldn't look the same without the influence of Jim Burke. In Reading Reminders, Burke is able to offer us a concise, easy-to-use book full of strategies and methods that can be used every day. Best of all, the book's table of contents and index are user-friendly, making this an on-the-desk reference. Each page is one "reminder"--a tip on how to complete a task to ensure student success. The next time you're preparing a lesson, a simple thumbing through these ideas will give you several tricks that can be used to spice up your instruction. Highly recommended!!
