Misleading classification.......2007-08-28
The search subjects for this book bill it as "secondary" and "high school" language arts. After receiving the book, I can see that it is very much for elementary level teachers. All the pictures, examples, and suggested resources are elementary level.
The book does look like an excellent resource for elementary teachers.

Customer Reviews:
good job breaking down the steps of writing.......2007-07-19
Great ideas for beginning writers in terms of organization. Breaks down the steps simply. Explains what makes interesting writing.
GREAT resource!.......2007-05-09
I have used this book with my own lessons and bought it for all the 2-5 teachers in my building. Very user friendly. Has great ideas for mini-lessons and wonderful resources to copy for students to keep in their wirters' notebooks. I highly recommend this book!
Makes writing seem easy!.......2007-01-16
This book is aimed toward older students, grades 3-8, but I have 2nd graders. Another teacher at my school recommended it, so I gave it a try. While not every lesson is appropriate for my grade level, a lot of it is. I especially like how there is a mini-play (2 or 3 minutes) to go along with the lessons. My students love the section of word choice, where there is a play of Strong Verb vs Weak Verb (like a boxing match). It has reproducible reference sheets for the students to use for transition words, color words, strong verbs, etc. These are great to add to a writing folder. I can't imagine how great this would be for the intermediate grades. Great resource! Especially when you aren't given much of a guideline on how to teach writing!
The Best for teaching writing.......2007-01-14
I work in a sixth grade classroom with second-language learners. This book is the best. I showed it to my fifth grade colleague, and he bought it. What is great about this book is that it has lists of words you can give to the kids such as strong verbs or sight words or transition words. It has wonderful teacher sheets to copy for teaching mini lessons. I used many of her ideas such as show/don't tell, or teaching similes or teaching dialogue. Seriously was not a book that I put on the shelf and rarely looked at. It's hard buying a book and not being able to thumb through it, but I tell you that you won't be disappointed with this one!
Hands-On Writing Tools for Young Writers.......2006-07-18
I enjoyed this book. It gave some very practical advice on creating a workshop environment for writing in the Intermediate grades. I have used the ideas (modified) with younger writers and they are equally as beneficial.
I think this is a must have for anyone who would like to put some Umphhh back into writing in the classroom.

A Good Guide.......2007-07-19
Very well done and easy to understand. Samples are good and support the ideas throughout.
Practical Traits.......2006-03-19
This book offers tons of practical approaches and practice scoring for the 6 Traits of Writing. It is written by a recognized master in the field and has been so helpful.
A Friendly Read.......2006-02-26
Spandel's book is an authentic, engaging, and encouraging read for those that teach writing, want help infusing writing, or want to enhance their own writing. It is written conversationally and is well supported with numerous examples. I found it visually appealing as a reader and insightful. (Another review didn't like the visuals because it isn't easy to lift examples "as is" for sharing in class. To that angle I agree, but as a reader the layout is very pleasing.) Highly recommended.
Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed).......2005-07-28
This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples.
With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly.
Great info, inconvenient format.......2003-08-17
Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom. The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2.

THINKING FOR YOURSELF... THE TEXTBOOK.......2005-02-15
I always find it amazing and ironic that there are textbooks teaching you how to think for yourself.
A bit ironic, don't you think?
The Operative Word is "developing" Thinking Skills.......2000-12-14
An excellent book that covers such diverse subjects as critical thinking, observation skills, word usage, communication, facts and reality, inferences, assumptions, opinions, viewpoints, arguments, fallacies, inductive and deductive reasoning, research skills and problem solving. And within each subject is a very well defined and easily understood definition of that subject along with examples of each. The chapter quiz found at the end of each chapter helps to ingrain and reinforce the lesson. The book is insightful and well written. Done with great skill as one is actually able to understand the premise and meaning of each topic/lesson.
Book Description
This new book gives readers the background they need to impart essential literary skills to students in grades 4-8, including vocabulary, content area, reading, the reading/writing connections, narrative text, and print skills. The author's trademark mini-lessons highlight contemporary theories of literacy learning. Significant attention is paid throughout the book to ways to help struggling learners become competent readers and writers. Addressing the needs of the pupil population, this book interestingly and competently covers the constructivist, interactive, socio-linguistic, and reader-response theories of literacy learning. Highlighted notes alert the reader to strategies and techniques that are the most appropriate for the situation, and real-life, concrete illustrations show classroom teaching as it really is. The book also illustrates the use of current technology to spur their learners on to become effective readers and writers. This useful resource is the perfect desk reference for educators from all backgrounds. Also a necessary reference for school administrators, including those in continuing education programs.

Find Instructional Reading Levels Efficiently and Effectively.......2007-01-04
This inventory has many improvements from prior Johns editions. As always, the Johns is easy to administer. This version provides accurate instructional reading levels in a timely fashion with improved student texts and comprehension questions. The CD is easy to use and simplifies copying. As a teacher, this purchase is worthy of my time and money.
Fantastic book!!!.......2006-07-22
This book really helped mer to understand doiing a reading assessment and i felt extremely comfortable doing the assessment.
Basic Reading Inventory.......2006-02-25
Immediate results from the assessments. Not as easy to use as Marie Clay's running Records, but all inclusive. The CD-ROM is great for reproducables, but many pages have to be pulled out of the book and put in page protectectors. Still a great method to diagnose and assess children's reading. One of those college books you will keep.
Excellent Reading Assement.......2005-09-30
This is an excellent book for professionals who can take the time to learn to give this kind of informal reading assessment. The format is very organized, clear, and easy to read. The author has numerous years of experience as a teacher/educator and it is apparent in the assesment he has designed. The information the assessment generates is very useful.

I'm an elementary teacher who has seen firsthand the power of getting kids to talk about their reading and thinking. This book shows you how to do just that! Customer Reviews:
Too Many Words!.......2006-03-28
While I am sure this book may have some good ideas in it, they would be hard to find. This book is very wordy. I was looking for a book full of integration ideas, this book is full of more justifications of why the arts are important. I know why they are important, what more authors (including this one) need to do is tell us simply and practically how to do it better.
Claudia Cornett Sparks Interest.......2002-11-26
I had the pleasure of having Claudia Cornett visit my school recently. She is a very energetic lady with a storehouse of great ideas! Her discussion, which was based on her book, made a whole room of teachers laugh and act silly. We were playing sock toss to help children with word chunks. We became actors with a simple pen. This pen became: a hairbrush, a microphone, a straw...
I can't wait to pick up a copy of this book and use all of the ideas in my classroom. Her energy and fire is contagious!
