1 out of 5 stars total waste of money!!!.......2007-04-07

this book was not helpful at all!!!i had just recently got into manga and anime drawing so i thought that this book would be helpful to me you know with the title being "basics for beginners" and all. all it did was show me useless information.all it does is show you characters made out of these weird rectangle type things only and then the finished project (but thats all no hair no clothes no nothing), instead of step-by-step directions on everything. if you are a beginner i would highly reccomend NOT, i repeat NOT getting this book!!! it confused me and didn't actually show me how to draw anything!!!if your a beginner and don't know where to start, your not alone!!! although this is the first book i ever got on the whole anime subject i would suggest some other how to draw manga books but definately not this one. try how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons volumes 1-6 and more how to draw manga volumes 1-4. believe me if you want, if you think diferently and want to try it any way be my guest but in my oppinion it's a total waste of money!!! hope this helped!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2007-01-10

Bought it as a Christmas gift for one of my nieces. I looked through it before I gave it to her. The book looks like it's got alot to offer. Maybe I'll get one for myself in the future.

1 out of 5 stars tasteless.......2006-06-28

This book tasteless. There are comics in the back of the book where there is a pedophilia scene. A young boy is seduced by a older man. It's not very nice. It also shows how to draw seductivley. This book is not appropriate for young people.

4 out of 5 stars It's awesome .......2005-11-06

I would recommend this for all beggining artist in magna, it has helped me alot, now i'm on the search for a magna book that teaches to draw clothing. This will really increase your drawing prowess

4 out of 5 stars The human body is nothing more than irregular cylinders, cubes and other shapes. .......2006-08-15

I would recommend this book after you have taken a basic drawing class. First you must master the ability to see all around you as basic shapes. After you have completed that task, this book is the next logical step.

From the begininng, this book offers different ways of observing the human body. Nothing much is needed to begin drawing the human body than a pencil and paper, this book will lead the way. However, for those advanced (or really motivated beginners) this book offers a list of other items to purchase.

Each part of the body (except for the feet!) is nicely described in the form of observation and basic shapes. Once you've learned that the human torso is nothing more than a irregularly shaped egg, the rest becomes easy.

5 out of 5 stars Feeling ambivalent about this one, but here's why: ..........2004-06-29

I looked over this book very carefully. At first I thought Greg Albert was the author. [I just finished SLAMMING Greg Albert for a different but poorly authored text elsewhere on Amazon!] But looking carefully, the cover states that Greg Albert is only the "editor" of this book, published by NORTH LIGHT.

There was something disturbingly familiar about the illustrations which are excellent...and then I realized, that North Light was the same publisher for WALT REED's "THE FIGURE", published in 1976, and that what North Light Publishers have done is invite GREG ALBERT to do a revision and update of WALT REED's "The Figure" with some new illustrations added, and slapping on an entirely new title. Well...okay...

This may give me an unpleasant feeling concerning authorship, but I did give Walt Reed's text a FIVE STAR rating on Amazon.com, and this has new illustrations added in.

This is an excellent book on beginner drawing, full of Walt Reed's original BLOCK FIGURES and human puppets. NORTH LIGHT PUBLISHERS was wise to update and revise the current text and continue to polish it.

3 out of 5 stars I was disappointed.......2004-01-08

I had high expectations for this book, thought it would teach me the correct way to render my sketchings of people better... I really think the sketches in the book could have been better, I thought it looked a little amateurish. Although the author covers many things and tries his hardest to convey what needs to be done, I think the photo lacks more instructions and step-by-step advice.

For instance: he will start with a semi outline of a body and just show you how to fill it in... it wasn't until later in the book he actually tries to show you porportions.

And in the beginning, he has you starting off my scribbling. Maybe that worked for others, but not for me.

I am starting a college drawing course in about 9 days and have been practicing my techniques from different books, but this is one book I'd rather leave on the shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Figure Drawing Techniques(North light Painting).......2000-09-17

An excellent choice, for beginning artists. This book includes many essential tools in figure drawing; such as the underlying bases of the figures, many different distinct poses, and also a good introduction to anatomy from an artistic view, yet still easily understandable by beginners. Within, this book you will find many introductory techniques that start from scribble and transform into to beautiful life forms as well as, well-written passages thoroughly explaining everything every step of the way. Therefore, if your interested in figure drawing and have never before even picked up a pencile;this book is your best choice!

This is one of the "keepers". Kristy has done an excellent job here in not only instruction, but in very informative tips and techniques. Saves the new artist allot of time in getting right to the point and avoiding common mistakes. Kristy's book is highly recommended and I'd have given it more than 5 stars if I could have!

4 out of 5 stars Drawing And Painting With Colored Pencil.......2006-11-06

Drawing And Painting With Colored Pencilery good reference book, I was very happy

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of money and time.......2006-08-24

There are many other books available on this subject and they are all better than this one. There is nothing to be gained from reading this book. Forget it!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning Examples.......2006-06-29

The illustrations for the techniques are Kutch's own colored pencil artwork. Her flowers are stunning and if I ever achieve a drawing on the level of her poppies or the morning glories, I'll be very happy.
Unfortunately, I struggled with some of the directions, bogging down over the art terms and special tools that I don't yet have. I think I'd benefit from rereading this book after I experiment more and stock in some of the supplies (special papers, ball burnisher, citrus thinner, etc.).
The techniques are shown in 5 or 6 steps with the illustration progressing as she describes the colors used. Most of the examples are flowers or fruit, but a few landscapes round it out.
The first 49 pages deal with regular colored pencils, then the rest of the book goes on to watercolor pencils and the techniques for those.

4 out of 5 stars Be Advised it is much to do about Watersoluble Pencils...........2006-03-23

This is a wonderful book, don't get me wrong, however I expected it to relate more to colored pencils by themselves. The first section does, then it goes on to a much larger section on watersoluble pencils and the final section is devoted to using them in tandem. If you are interested in using them in tandem then by all means, this book should be on your shelf! The text is precise and easy to follow, the artwork is wonderful, to say the least.

Book Description

The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15

I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17

This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14

This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.

But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.

5 out of 5 stars Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04

I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.

5 out of 5 stars don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28

Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for any novice designer.......2002-01-27

I really recommend this book to anyone who may want to get into fashion design, but thinks they cannot draw. I really found this book helpful because it breaks down the body starting with the basic skeletal structure all the way to the final, finished body. It also explains how to draw the face, hands, feet, accessories (hats, gloves, shoes, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars like being in a classroom.......2001-02-13

Excellent guide for the expert and novice alike with very clear and well defined text accompaning the drawings. This is a hands on guide with advice all along the way on how to avoid common pitfalls. Too bad this book is out of print and I have to keep using the public library copy, I would buy it in a second and I don't even know the price (price not printed on the book in the British paperback version).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great instruction book on drawing Caricatures.......2007-05-22

This book is indeed an 'instruction' book on caricaturing. The author teaches drawing 'eyes', 'noses', & mouths and has step by step projects to help the beginner combine the elements into a drawing. Three heads are better than one in this case because the three authors, working together, did a better job than one author, alone, could have done in creating this book. The authors don't, in my oppinion, have the best talent for drawing great caricatures like some other author's works that I've seen. Their ability to take the focus off of themselves and help the student came through in the creation of this book.

The Basics of Artistic Drawing is an OUTSTANDING book. I have learned so much and whenever I review the materiel I learn even more. There are so many helpful hints. It is a book that keeps teaching; if you have any questions just review the section on that topic and your question will more than likely be answered. With the step by step instructions anyone can learn how to draw, shade, and paint. I am very impressed. This is a well thoughtout course with the student in mind. 4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-03

I like Naruto and Pokemon, and I like to draw, so learning to draw anime people was a lot of fun. I pretty much have drawing the people down, but now I have to get all the supplies. Some of it is hard to understand, but I think that's because it's probably designed for adults. I don't care, though. Like I said, it's a good book!

4 out of 5 stars Manga Magic.......2007-01-06

All of you out there who would like to draw manga, and have a small to superb experience range, read this book! I bought it from a bookstore (Barnes&Noble), and found it extremely useful. I, although, was a beginner, back then, and found it difficult to comprehend what they said (a bit confusing). But, if you have that little bit of Manga Knowledge, pick it up!

2 out of 5 stars No, no, no..........2006-10-09

This book spends far more time telling us what kind of materials are needed and where to buy them/how to use them, than it does "how" to draw manga. I want to learn what characteristics make a successful manga figure, not how to produce a manga comic book. I did not feel this book was very useful - there is only one useful page, for example, discussing eyes, and it simply has 4 sets of "boys' eyes" and 4 of "girls' eyes."

I don't consider this a "how to draw" book but rather a "how to get started making manga books with all the appropriate materials." Give me a black marker and some colored pencils and I'm happy. This book isn't worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for any emerging manga artist!.......2006-05-04

This book taught me so many things! Before I read this book, I thought I was going to have to make all those screentones myself! Boy, was I wrong! :D This book tells you what materials you'll need to write and draw your own manga, and describes them in great detail! However, I only gave this book 4 stars because...

-It doesn't describe how to draw people very well. If you've mastered that (which I haven't), the book's fine.
-It barely has any information on paneling.
-The first few pages are colored digitally. A bit ironic that there are pages colored digitally in a book that gives instructions on how to draw traditionally, don't you think?

Overall, if you're still a beginner, this book is not for you. But if you've gotten pretty good at drawing people and are ready to move on to publishing your own manga, buy this book immediately!

Tip for you all: Ignore page 73. It doesn't know what it's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-02-27

This book has excellent info on how to draw manga, especially for beginners. It's very acurate, and can show you many teqhniques to get started drawing manga. I absoulutely reccomend this book. It is absoulutely stunning, and the details are fantastic. Before I read it, my manga was, yes, terrible. But now, my manga has improved a lot more.
