Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

3 out of 5 stars New Directions in Altered Books.......2007-08-17

This was a well made book with good photos etc. It was not entirely visually appealing to me however and I felt a little let down. If I had seen it in the flesh prior to purchasing I would have left it. (One of the pitfalls with internet buying I suppose).
However, maybe I am not into the whole 'altered book' process and as such my comments may not be a good overall yardstick.

5 out of 5 stars What a fun book!.......2007-07-22

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The instructions are very good, there are many creative ideas and the photography is wonderful. There are some really unique approaoches to wall art using altered books, as well as using CDs, picture frames, etc. What I like best is that this book has some new and refreshing ideas which I haven't seen before and that always gets my creative juices flowing. There is also a great gallery which showcases the work of other artists. For those just beginning, the book starts with how to choose the right book for altering. For the more advanced enthusiast, there is a section that asks, "What if...? and explores new possibilities with other artists. Something for everyone and definitely one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2007-05-24

This book was initially recommended to me by an art instructor. It has proved to be a well-founded recommendation. Clear instruction and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual ideas, for artists.......2007-05-13

This book has some very interesting ideas. Its more for the real artist who is making altered books, not the more crafty person. It sparked several ideas of my own. Not a first book to buy, though, if you're just getting into the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Creatively Top-notch.......2007-05-09

Sometimes a writer simply clicks. Gabe Cyr is in top form from start to finish. I couldn't turn a page in this book without being inspired. Although the book might be a stretch for some readers who want to try altered books for the first time, it is so filled with ideas, hints, tips and possibilities that even the complete novice would find encouragement to try a new skill.
My personal experience has been that many craft books are mediocre at best. The offerings lean toward "cute" or toward craft groups preparing for a fund-raising event...very middle-of-the-road. Gabe Cyr dares to try truly unusual things and in the process to open the door for others to do the same. The projects are not intended to be re-created exactly, but to help each reader find her or his own "voice" in this artistic craft.
An excellent addition to any serious library.

5 out of 5 stars Every College Student Should Read This Book.......2006-03-02

As an adult college student, I was looking for a book that would outline what writing requirements are needed for various courses and this book fit the bill. Justin Cohen and Marti Page provided detailed and useful information for different college writing assignments. In addition, they provided all the fundamentals a college student should need to write effectively for any college course. The chapters covered key information with ample examples. It was also helpful to see professors' viewpoints on what students have presented to them and what they really want students to provide in essay and research paper submissions. Moreover, it was helpful to read what students had to say about the processes that they used to provide the correct amount of information for their writing assignments.

If you are a college student who wants to improve your writing skills, BUY THIS BOOK!

Do I have to say anything more? Get this guide for writing college papers now! Justin Cohen's writing techniques are the best techniques I've ever heard. Sure, there are other books out there but there is only one that will make you laugh your brains out. Ok! I think I've said too much. Just get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2001-04-25

I like this book because it's easy to pick up and read the isolated and distinct chapters. If I'm having problems with research, I can look at JUST that chapter and read professor and student tips on that topic alone. I've enjoyed a lot of the creative insights and recommendations that the book suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-12-03

I purchased four writing guides for my daughter, but none had the innovative approach of the Yale Daily News Guide to Writing College Papers. Because of the multiple sidebars containing interesting facts, specific professors' advice, and humorour anecdotes, this book was the first (and only) one she picked up. I see no need to force her to read the other three now since I've seen such a remarkable improvement in her essay-writing skills.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!.......2000-12-03

I am not a college student, but I was struggling to handle the unmanageable number of papers that my teachers were assigning in all my A.P. classes. While the authors' approach was humorous, the book was really informative and helpful. I especially enjoyed reading the helpful hints from professors and college students; their real-life advice was practical and helped me establish writing habits that will be of great help both this year and next year when I go to college. Two thumbs up!

Book Description

A poet is a poet for such a very tiny bit of his life; for the rest he is a human being, one of whose responsibilities is to know and feel, as much as he can, all that is moving around and within him.
--Dylan Thomas

This unique volume celebrates poetry by providing a personal, intimate connection with the act of its creation. Based on an enormously successful exhibition at The New York Public Library, The Hand of the Poet draws the reader into the real world of the poet-- ink spots, tobacco stains, and all-- by presenting a wide range of working drafts, letters, diary entries, photographs, and memorabilia. One hundred writers from the seventeenth century to the present day are represented, from John Donne to Mark Strand, Samuel Coleridge to Anne Waldman, Lord Byron to Julia Alvarez, William Blake to Lorine Niedecker and Stanley Kunitz. Writers better known for their prose are included here as well-- Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov, among others.

This book records the place of poetry in daily life and how, exactly, we turn to it as, in the words of Allen Ginsberg, not "just pretty or just beautiful," but "basic to human existence." As Dana Gioia notes in his introduction, "The Magical Value of Manuscripts," contact with handwritten manuscripts speaks to the same desire manifest in the explosion of poetry readings occurring today nationwide.

Biographies and portraits of each poet-- alongside manuscripts of such legendary works as Yeats's "The Wild Swans at Coole" and W. H. Auden's "Stop All the Clocks"-- make up a mosaic that offers powerful and often surprising revelations of the person behind the poem.

Illustrated with over three hundred black-and-white photographs, The Hand of the Poet is for those new to poetry as well as those for whom poetry has been a life-long passion. Following both the inspiration and the labors of these writers, readers may find themselves in the position of Ralph Waldo Emerson following the travels of Henry David Thoreau: "It was a pleasure and a privilege to walk with him. He knew the country like a fox or a bird, and passed through it as freely by paths of his own...."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deep, dark, lightening bright intrigue.......2001-07-26

This is a beautifully designed book that will satisfy every single literary peeping tom. Those voyeur pleasure spots will be rubbed just the right way with each intriguing entry. The book is a collection of pictures, short biographies and handwritten notes from a wonderful list of 100 writers. The doodles, the scribbled draft poems or the penciled revisions in the margins next to a picture of the poet allow the reader to experience a rare intimacy with the poet and his art. My favorite picture in the book is of Randall Jarrell holding his beloved "Kitten" in front of a mirror. Jarrell's eyes are looking with joy on the reflection of his cat and "Kitten's" eyes are glaring from the mirror directly at the reader. If you love literature and are intrigued with the creative process, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars For the aspiring poet, a good read.......2001-06-06

There is something magical about seeing well known and loved poems in the poet's own hand... this book provides an interesting insight into the works of a good number of well-known poets. A must-have for those who read poetry with more than just a passing interest, this book is also a good starting point for biographical information. Nice photographs, and, when necessary, captions transcribing the poets' sometimes illegible handwriting make this book a gem. Perfect for browsing.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but is it worth it?.......2000-12-08

I bought the book, and interesting as it is, I'm just not sure what it's worth to me as a lover of literature and as a writer. I like seeing some of the original manuscripts, the various pictures, and such, but that really didn't enlighten me to anything. Yes, there is a small biographical introduction to each writer, but it's so short as to be almost pointless. This is the kind of book you check out of the library, not buy. I don't want anyone to think it's not a good collection. It is. But I can't in any good faith recommend someone spending this much money on something that really doesn't bring to light anything new or special about any one of these writers. It's just...well, it's just neat. If you want something special, then look elsewhere. If you just like spending money on neat books, then maybe this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars from the exhibition.......2000-09-23

this was a nicely done book that helps show you the importance of the poet's original manuscript. all poets and poetry lovers should pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars a good representation of an excellent exhibit.......1998-08-04

This book is based on an 1996 exhibit in the New York Public Library which featured original material from one hundred poets, covering centuries of work, including poets as diverse as John Donne and Allen Ginsberg. Part of the appeal of the exhibit was seeing the actual original manuscripts, jotted notes, and correspondence right in front of you, and in that regard, the book can not live up. It is, nonetheless, excellent in its scope and interesting in its reproductions of the material from the exhibit. It would be particularly appealing to students or enthusiasts of poetry, that is, those with a prior background knowledge of the poets included. It would be of less value to someone looking for an introduction to poetry. I did thoroughly enjoy both the exhibit and the book and do strongly recommend it to any poetry enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Instructions for creating your personal divination deck.......2006-02-03

SoulCollage is a guide to creating your own divination deck, whose imagery is a metaphor for your unique self and life-experience. No two SoulCollages are alike, either in images, meanings, or number or assortment of cards.

Because the deck is illustrated by way of collage (pictures torn or cut from magazines and photos) it is accessible even for people without much artistic skill, or who haven't got much money. Explaining one's self visually is ideal for nonverbal people.

The underlying philosophy and organization of SoulCollage is unique, and differs from the Tarot or other divination decks. It says it's for seekers of all faiths or of no faiths. It encourages making and working with the SoulCollages in groups of other people, and has suggestions for numerous different kinds of groups where this would be appropriate.

The book talks about the Jungian concept of the Shadow. In discussing this, it explains that you shouldn't make a Devil card for your deck in which you lump all the unpleasant things, because then you miss out on recognizing where else the dark stuff may be. The book encourages you to learn to see the good stuff in what you thought was only all bad stuff, and to learn to see the bad stuff in what you thought was only all good stuff, so that you don't run into unforeseen problems later due to quick dualistic judgements. The book does associate pure good with stasis and stagnation, and plain bad with movement, and the two together with struggle and progress. Some people may disagree with thinking of good and evil in that way.

There are four suits, plus one Source card. (The Source card represents the sum.) The suits are these:

~ The Community Suit, or "Inner Family." The psychological dimension. Represents the different parts of your personality, such as the inner critic, inner child, and so on. The book says this division exists in all people, and it's healthy to understand these parts. It's unhealthy only when these parts work against one another. If you have health issues that you're working with, the book suggests to make cards which represent them.

~ The Companion Suit, or "My Animal Guides." The energetic dimension. Represents seven different animal totems associated with your seven chakras. This suit's concept is based on The Personal Totem Pole by Steve Gallegos, who "pioneered" (invented) the combination of animal totems and chakras. This eclectic cultural appropriation of Hindu and Native American spirituality strikes me as unethically misrepresenting the cultures of origin. Then again, it's a good thing for people to get in touch with their animal natures, and to understand the chakras. SoulCollage includes meditations for this.

~ The Community Suit, or "Local Allies." The communal dimension. These are friends, family members, pets, long-deceased authors, etc, who are influential to you.

~ The Council Suit, or "Archetypes." The spiritual dimension. The great overarching themes and events of your life.

I think the book could have spent a lot more time describing the suits and what's appropriate for them, and less time talking about how to arrange groups of people for working on the cards together.

3 out of 5 stars More for the scrapbooker than the art journaler.......2007-08-24

After eagerly awaiting publication of this book, I didn't end up buying it after all. The sample pages had a garish, repetitive, slapped-together look to my eye. Scrapbooking technique books and magazines like this one emphasize page design and novelty so heavily that the photos and ephemera within it almost get lost, making it too self-consciously about the craft rather than the content.

I confess that my own interest is more towards altered books than scrapbooking, and the scrapbooking titles I do enjoy are more towards the sensibility in Scrap City: Scrapbooking for Urban Divas and Small Town Rebels. Mainly, though, the samples and techniques have to appeal to my eye, and those in "The Altered Book Scrapbook" didn't, unfortunately.

what a pleasure to see more than just a few pages from what we know are entire volumes. One advantage of that for scrapbookers looking for inspiration is it allows us to see repeating motifs from page to page of each scrapbook or journal shown, though the subjects and themes of the pages change throughout each of those books. Cutting edge "art journal" style pages are in abundance, with some more traditional takes as well, displaying a plethora of techniques and plenty of tips, too.
Included in this nice hard bound volume is the work of some prolific scrapbook/journalers including Lisa Hoffman, Karenann Young, Lisa Cook and Nicole Landy. Most of the photos and details are printed BIG so we can really check out what's goin' on.

2 out of 5 stars The Most Uninspiring Book in My Library.......2007-03-01

I am relatively new at altered art, so I thought this book would be a good one for me. Sadly, I am grossly disappointed. How ugly the majority of the projects are! Many of them look like an elementary school child would have no problem completing them. The projects in this book were just not anything I would qualify as "Art." I only gave it two stars for the nice photography.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed, sort of.......2006-07-15

I love the quality of the pictures of the final projects and the overal quality of the book presentation. However, I did not like the "refer to page [x]" for the step-by-step techniques in each project and the pictures of the steps did not help much. Every technique is not the same from project to project. It seemed a lazy approach to the book layout. Other than that is was OK.

5 out of 5 stars Altered Art for the First Time.......2006-06-12

An excellent offering for artists of all levels, Madeline Arendt opens your eyes to new and easy ways of creating keepsakes that will become family heirlooms. Her directions are simple to follow, and she gives the reader permission to take the project and "jump off the page." A great addition to any artist's library!

5 out of 5 stars From expert to novice there is something here for everyone!.......2005-11-14

If you are new to the altered art craze or an old hand you will find inspiration and great advice in this book. The projects are well thought out, delightfully original and inspiring. Learn a variety of techniques easily with step by step photography or just gaze at the artistry to stir your own creative juices. This book is a must have for anyone working with paper, fabrics, paints, or inks.

Book Description

A scathing and thoroughly researched examination of the editorial practices of the world's most consulted newspaper.

In this meticulously researched study—the first part of a two-volume work—Howard Friel and Richard Falk demonstrate how the newspaper of record in the United States has consistently, over the last 50 years, misreported the facts related to the wars waged by the United States. From Vietnam in the 1960s to Nicaragua in the 1980s and Iraq today, the authors accuse the New York Times of serial distortions. They claim that such coverage now threatens not only world legal order but constitutional democracy in the United States.

Falk and Friel show that, despite numerous US threats to invade Iraq, and despite the fact that an invasion of one country by another implicates fundamental aspects of the UN Charter and international law, the New York Times editorial page never mentioned the words “UN Charter” or “international law” in any of its 70 editorials on Iraq from September 11, 2001, to March 20, 2003. The authors also show that the editorial page supported the Bush administration's WMD claims against Iraq, and that its magazine, op-ed and news pages performed just as poorly.

In conclusion the authors suggest an alternative editorial policy of “strict scrutiny” that incorporates the UN Charter and the US Constitution in the Times coverage of the use and threat of force by the United States and the protection of civil and human rights at home and abroad.

4 out of 5 stars A good and thorough inspection lacking in muscle and sophistication.......2005-08-19

This book begins from a very demure and subdued persepective then slowly lashes out with the meticulous research on the part of the authors.

You WILL see a pattern of a co-opted agenda at the New York Times foreign policy desk, but the book refuses to go the extra mile and portray the deeper journalistic and personal conflicts of the offending reporters.

While the book avoids mudslinging about the Times' new questionable real estate acquistions, it also avoids impugning the paper too much. For example, where the author could have and SHOULD have come down hard on the felonious misinformation of Mr. Chalabi, it did not. When it could have covered the greater implications of Iraq or Vietnam and cleared up chronic misconceptions about both conflicts, it failed to and only waved the ideologies of the authors.

If you're a straight shooter, you probably won't like the almost childish way that the authors try to suddenly hammer their point in half a page after subtly pushing it, as if they were unsure of their work. Also, the book's starting point that the New York Times has committed egregious errors while admitting that only the Times is targeted because of its stature in the nation and in the hearts of the authors makes them sound like fans who have been betrayed than sophisticated experts.

All in all, the research itself is among the most extensive on the technical level and will be referenced for years if not decades by ideologues and political analysts alike. The chapter about the recent events in Venezuela is an astounding touch and is actually the highlight of effective research and the government's doublethink tendencies. If you're remotely interested in world events, journalism, or just truth as a whole, try to read at least half of this book. It may take some time, but you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars A very important book........2005-06-07

I've always tended to trust the New York Times, and I know many other people have as well. It's just always been around, giving us "all the news that's fit to print". It's reliable. But that's why The Record of the Paper is so important. Everyone takes the Times' trustworthiness for granted, but it isn't as trustworthy as we think it is.

I don't know how likely the Times is to change its reporting to include international law, as Friel and Falk request, and so it is important for people to read this book, so that if they are being misinformed about vital issues, at leas they will know it what ways the information is skewed. The book also explains international law in a way that is clear and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding study of how US foreign policy is reported.......2005-01-28

The New York Times has for the last 50 years refused to consider international law as relevant to US foreign policy. This outstanding book shows how this failure has distorted the Times' news and views and led to regular acceptance of the US state's deceptions.

The authors show how the Times has consistently echoed the US government. For example, it ignored the 1954 Geneva peace accords, reported as fact President Johnson's lies about Vietnamese aggression in the Tonkin Gulf in 1964, backed the illegal US interference in Nicaragua, misreported the 1986 World Court's condemnation of this interference, and denied the US role in the coup attempts against Venezuela's elected President.
Recently, the Times endorsed the illegal Bush/Blair aggression against Iraq, a violation of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force. In its 70 editorials on Iraq between 11 September 2001 and 21 March 2003, it never mentioned the UN Charter or international law.
The Times presented Iraqi possession of WMD as fact, ignoring the IAEA's 60 reports showing it had destroyed Iraq's nuclear programme. The Times also ignored the UNMOVIC and IAEA reports that they had inspected eight of the nine suspected WMD sites listed in Blair's September 2002 dossier, and found no evidence of WMD. The Times failed to note that possession of WMD, even if proven, is not a casus belli.

The illegal invasion of Iraq led inevitably to all the other illegalities, the illegal occupation, the killing of more than 100,000 civilians, the illegal detention of 40,000 Iraqis, the systematic abuse and atrocities, the destruction of 70% of Fallujah's homes.

The authors point out that torture thrives where detainees are illegally held in secret without charge or trial, that is, kidnapped. This crime by the US and British leaders led inevitably to breaches of the US Constitution, which forbids cruel and unusual punishment, and of the Geneva Conventions and the 1984 Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

1 out of 5 stars deconstructing truth........2005-01-16

If you are a "red stater" you will not like this book.

Not much to argue with, if you are a fan of America-bashing and Israel-bashing dressed up as a criticism of the NewYork Times. Howard Friel is a hardcore leftwing dogmatist who does not hesitate to lie, freely, to advance his cause, and this book is a desperate attempt to shore up his cause: ostensibly, that the NYT is a puppet of the evil American-Jewish axis. He also supported North Vietnam against the US and objected to the first GulfWar.

If you take your hate-filled leftism straight, this book is for you. P.E.S.T. sufferers should take this book in moderation, as it will excite unnatural impulses.

4 out of 5 stars Truth or Consequences.......2005-01-10

I just heard the author, Mr. Friel being grilled and cross-examined by Mr. 'Kenny Boy' Adelman{Reagan-Bush} Hawk on C-Span 2. *Mr. Adelman continually badgered & baited Howard Friel, interupted him, belittled him; there was obvious tampering with the audio(Mr. Friel's mic) esp when he would try to respond to Adelman's condescending, inflamatory tone.
This book has obviously hit a raw nerve with the powerful Jewish lobby within our Gov't. Esp the Neo-con's(Zionists) who propagated this faux war for Israel, control of M.E., and oil. No other ally has the influence and financial sway of AIPAC, ADL, Z.O.A.--that's OK--until the 'dumb unsuspecting masses(gentiles) are fighting and dying for poor Israel's defense. But--will this escalation in killing of innocents truly bring peace? Hell No!! The 'Project For A New American Century'..written by Neo-Con's--.calls for the germination of further regime changing conflicts in M.E.,Iran, Syria, Yemen, etc. Many from left & right, have finally begun speaking out about this insane foreign policy, to eliminate Israel's enemies. Fortunately, the Likudniks & Sharon have been failing miserably, along with their puppets Blair & Bush. Imagine that, 2 Anglo's at Sharon's mercy? Brent Scowcroft, Pat Buchanan, Howard Dean, Ralph Nader, have all spoken out regarding the mysterious inside work of Wolfowitz, kagan, Perle,etc.,etc. Clinton, Albright almost fell hard for the 'LiberAL'-vers. Neo-Con's idea of invading Iraq in 98. They were booed off the stage at OSU,(Col.,OH.); upon their revelation of how we had to take 'our' boy Hussein out. The college kids proved they were much better informed than the stupid-sleeping masses, who have been brainwashed by the Corp controlled media.(NYTIMES,etc.}. Bill Cohen, and Sandy Berger, all Jewish by the way, were laughed off the stage--and Clinton quickly dropped the plan; only after talking to Marc Rich,(Rem.last scandalous pardon); Rich has been proven to be an inside MOSSAD agent. Don't take my word for it, look it up. Nuthin's what it seems in all of this. Many things we cannot see are there. But--Iraq was no clear & present danger' to us. So why are we killing their innocent men, women & children?
